said I know English can be trying have you ever heard that word before that adjective trying prante well no trying means difficult and since most of my students mispronounce difficult because they say difficult when it's really difficult well then I always say you can say another word you can say trying you can say tough you can say rough me Favorito challenging it's challenging well trying can be anything that's difficult we went through a very trying situation but it seems like we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and then I said never stop trying and then I said to try out right to try out your Mastery and do we try out clothing no we try on clothing so we're going to look at those ins and outs those nuances when we try something when we try something on and when we try something out and when we try a person yeah to bring them to trial is trial try if you bring someone to trial you're trying them he was tried for murder imput I think might be the word in Spanish right like he's he was charged with murder so let's take a look at this versatile verb with so many meanings as we even looked at it's an adjective trying difficult and don't worry this episode will not be as trying as the last one well the last one we looked at three different verbs and they're phrasal verbs again if you haven't listened to that one it's on look see and watch give it a look or give it a listen all right uh the verb is regular so every day I try yesterday I tried remember we have three columns I tried I walked or I wanted so you've got D and it okay that's it that's with regular verbs so this is columna tried we're going to use it a lot we're going to connected to the it did you try it did you try it I tried it I tried it did you try it did you I didn't say did you why did you try it yeah I tried it I tried it twice tried it okay so we always focus on how to put the word into its sentence into its natural habitat as I call it so the verb try in general means to make an attempt to do something also to test or experiment with something right so in elaboratory things like that also to give effort towards a goal a a goal is it's also used to express the idea of attempting experimenting testing or experiencing some something and that's not SP meal like I mean experiences wow you have to experience life uh you've got to travel it really G gives you the opportunity to experience different places that's that experiment often to see if it is possible suitable or enjoyable and I want to stop there too for the a how do you say un right possible impossible suitable enjoyable responsible respectable delectable do you hear something in common with all of them a bull Uno all right so let's look at the first one to attempt or make an effort make an it's not make an effort it's make an effort right I'm dropping things here I got all excited guys I got excited I love it when people make an effort I love it when my students are driven so to make an make an effort El to make an effort did you make an effort yeah I made an effort an effort I made an effort I tried so it's used when someone makes an effort to accomplish something often challenging or uncertain you know this word inre is uncertainty so that would be the adjective this is uncertain okay so uncertainty would be the noun as always you can play with words pick them apart you know okay certain you're you're sure you're uncertain you're unsure uncertainty that's the noun we look at the adjectives the nouns right so it it's good to really see and the answer is usually yes let's look at some examples I'll try to finish the project we've looked at that word a lot nobody should be saying project at this stage in the game ASAS at this stage in the game so I'll try to did I say two no I'll try to finish to finish I'll try to I'll try to go I'll try to eat I'll try we always have to focus what what is the changing part of the sentence and what is the part that stays the same right so I'll try to finish the project by tomorrow I'll try to ask me will you did you say will you or will you will you try to finish the project by tomorrow by tomorrow I don't say tomorrow I say tomorrow by by tomorrow it's again don't look at what's written English will just throw you off if you look at the written word listen listen and then look at it right so I'll try to finish the project by tomorrow will you try to finish the project by tomorrow no I won't try to finish the project by tomorrow it's not due until next week do the same do as du to ah another example she tried to lift the heavy box but couldn't she tried to she tried to she tried to lift the heavy box but couldn't ask me did she did she try to did she try to lift the heavy box yeah you make a see yeah she tried to lift the heavy box no not her she didn't try to lift the heavy box no she didn't why didn't she why didn't she try to lift the heavy box why didn't she try to lift the heavy block the the heavy box blocks box it's a long sentence and it's a hard one to say so uh I feel your pain as a native speaker Mar hey an Applause for me I'm switching between English and Spanish and it's not easy sometimes my brain feels like it's GNA explode that's right all right the next one is to test or experiment with something okay it's used when something or someone is experimenting uh with something new or unfamiliar and they want to see a result it's not result it's result result okay tomorrow we'll get the results results okay be careful make a little note because it's one I've heard pronounced incorrectly many times let's take a look at some examples you should try using this app to improve your productivity you should try using now what did you notice there we said try to and we say try with so that's a great thing about try try can be used with the infinitive after or with the Geren I tried to call you I tried calling you isn't that wonderful when you can use both all right so just pay attention because in the first one it was two now we're going to use it with the gerand so you should try using this app to improve your productivity ask me should I should I try using this app to improve my productivity yeah you should all right the next one they tried a new recipe for the first time okay they tried tried they tried a new recipe they tried a new they tried a new recipe for the first time say it they tried a new recipe for the first time they tried a new restaurant whatever ask me did they try a new recipe for the first time remember recipe Isa C and prescription Isa the Meda Meda okay so they tried a new recipe for the first time did they did they try a new recipe for the first time yes they did be careful with the pronunciation there I've heard a lot of people mispronounce it recipe recipe all right the next one is to taste something or sample it it reminds me at the grocery store and the supid sometimes different companies have somebody there and they're giving you samples of the project of the product and you sample it to sample is another um another synonym for this and later on we'll take a look at some synonyms and antonyms but to sample right to test or taste right and a taste test you know what that is unak we're having a taste test and we're going to see what you guys think about the different flavors all right let's take a look would you like to try some of this cake would you like to would you like to try some of this cake de make a no no I wouldn't like to try some of this cake I wouldn't like to try some of this cake would you like to I'd like to remember if we we contract it it's always better I'd like to try some of this cake yeah if you don't mind remember the expression I know we've looked at it you can't have your cake and eat it too right the next one he tried a sip of the unusual drink and decided he liked it lik he liked it right so he tried to he tried to sip Grande we say a gulp gulp sip they're both anic he tried a sip of the unusual drink and he decided he liked it all right that reminds me in Japan we were trying all kinds of unusual drinks ask me did he did he try a sip did he try a sip of the unusual drink yeah turn the last part into a question can you did he did he decide he liked it yeah he decided he liked it did he decide he liked it yeah he decided he liked it hey these are tongue twisters today the next one as I said to bring someone to trial if you're trying someone you're putting them in front of a judge and a jury in a courtroom and they are on trial right if you're on trial so if you think about it because that word a lot of people mispronounce they say he was tried for murder he was on trial for four months okay just to give it to you in context let's see the court will try the suspect for the alleged crime say it with me the court will try the suspect okay for the alleged crime will bring them to court for the alleged that's a good wordo ask me can you turn it into a question will will the court try the suspect for the alleged crime yeah the court will the court will the court will try the suspect for the alleged crime they're taking him to trial he'll be on trial as of tomorrow the next one she was tried for fraud and found guilty we say you say right we wouldn't say she was declared guilty it's correct I mean it makes sense I don't think it's wrong but would be more common to say he was found guilty the opposite as abto I think he right he was acquitted hey we're learning some legal vocabulary here today so she was tried for fraud and found guilty ask me was she was she tried for fraud and found guilty oh yeah she was tried for fraud and found guilty as charged all right the next usage to exert effort no eort to exert effort in doing something over time so a lot of times it's used with keep or continue or just right and it means no not this don't give up right don't give up let's take a look if you don't succeed if you don't succeed keep trying see keep trying until you do we say in English if at first you don't succeed try try try again yes so is see and I tell that to my daughter all the time I tell her Lara we never get we we hardly ever up in us get things on the first go on the first try on the first go or on the first try so to keep trying let's take a look at another one try as you might in no some things just aren't meant to be some things just aren't meant to be things aren't meant to be all right and the last usage is to challenge oneself or one's own abilities so it's about pushing yourself it's about achieving goals again it's linked to this one you know that effort that it takes to get things done let's take a look she tried her hand at painting and discovered she loved it and this is more of an idiomatic expression to try your hand at something is I think you would say right she tried her hand at painting and discovered she loved it ask me turn it into a question did she did she try her hand at painting and discover she loved it yeah she tried her hand at painting and discovered she loved it it means to try it to see if it's something that interests you and the last example is he tried his best right he tried his best to stay calm during the exam he tried his best M he tried his best to stay calm during the exam ask me did he there's that Diddy again did he try his best to stay calm during the exam yeah he tried his best tried his best he tried his best to stay calm during the exam okay and let's try it in a couple different tenses because I think you know we already have but this way we make sure in every episode along with the essential verbs we're also practicing the essential tenses the tenses you need to know inside and out that's why I'm always telling you turn it into a question now make it a negative now a negative question so here we go let's drill it okay I try to exercise every morning say it with me okay and then we're going to play with it I try to exercise try to try to okay I'm trying to I try to exercise every morning ask me do you try to exercise every morning do you try do you try to exercise every morning yeah I try to work out every morning does she does she try to exercise every morning yeah she tries to exercise every morning okay the present continuous she's trying to learn Spanish this year she's trying she is she's trying she's trying to learn Spanish this year she's trying to she's trying to learn Spanish this year ask me is she no is she right is is she trying to learn Spanish this year no she isn't trying to learn Spanish this year she isn't trying to learn Spanish this year here all right and ask me why no why isn't she did you say why she isn't why isn't she trying to learn Spanish this year all right the past simple they tried to they tried to they tried to they tried to make it on time but there was traffic ask me did they did they try to make it on time did they try to make it on time yeah they tried to make it on time but there was a traffic jam what about the present perfect we have tried several methods to solve the problem there's just one problem we have tried let's contract it we've tried several methods to solve the problem your turn we've tried several methods to solve the problem have you have you tried several methods to solve the problem oh yeah we've tried everything and the last one the future tense the future with will I I will I'll try calling him later I'll try calling him later okay ask me will you will you try calling him him later yeah I'll try calling him later all right and some synonyms we already looked at some of these words but we'll look at if they're regular irregular and pronunciation things any any little things I think are worth pointing out the first one attempt attempted they attempted to finish on time but they didn't[Music] M attempt right the next one to struggle he tried to get off his jacket he struggled Lucho to get off his jacket so struggled it's the D column he struggled with depression okay to strive I love this one this is also regular he strived for Perfection if you strive for something that's your goal it's what you're trying to do the next one to sue well if somebody's bringing you to court if they're making you go on trial if they're trying you then you might be being sued and to sue is De and the other try is to put to the test something I'm going to do with you in the bonus episode well I do it throughout both episodes but always remember we have our translation test and some antonyms for try to slack to slack means to not try right if you're a slacker it is so a slacker slacks or slacks off he man you're always slacking off that's a difficult one for me in in Spanish the next one abstain a regular verb he abstained from shouting please abstain from shouting sir the next one idleness idleness is also laziness it means you're not moving if something is Idle it's thatto idle so the noun is idleness the adjective idle the next one to surrender well if you're if you keep trying if you stop well then you surrender or the last one you give upo but I hope you don't give up and I hope you'll join us in the bonus episode of this week's FY I[Music][Applause][Music][Applause][Music]
