Welcome to life on the brink, a lovely little place filled with inspiration, creativity that is dedicated to enjoying life one day at a time. I'm Ana, and together, we're exploring the beautiful things in this world that fascinate us, and often discovering something new. Hello, hello, and welcome to Episode 39 of life on the brink. Happy autumn. We are now officially in autumn and I honestly could not be more excited. It's not quite cold enough for me to switch out into the cold weather wardrobe. But I'm incorporating some more layers now. At the end of last week's episode, I mentioned that there will be more autumnal podcast episodes coming your way starting with this one. Because now that we're approaching October, I think when this goes live, it'll be actually the last day of September, but basically it's October now. And for most people, sometimes that includes a bit of spooky, you know it hashtag spooky season. I've seen that a lot this year season as ze n. And you may recall because I've had my sister Sarah on the podcast a few times now. We always talk about movies, it seems and neither of us are very into scary movies. But we do love a cozy sort of kind of spooky adventure, you might say like a mystery, basically a movie that's perfect for this this season. So for this episode, I have brought Sarah back onto the podcast, not for simply autumnale movies that we've done that you can check out Episode Seven, which was our autumn movie night. But this year, we're here for spooky movie night. These are movies that if you are like us and don't want to see a scary movie, but maybe you're getting together with friends or family or you want to still soak up the fullness of October as it were. Maybe you'll pick up a recommendation or two from our list. This is all just in great fun. We always have fun when we get together to talk about movies and as per usual there's some overlap so I'm not sure how many we ended up with but there's a nice concise list for you and hopefully is just the conversation that you need for some cozy fall mysterious inspiration. So without further ado, here is my quote unquote interview. My conversation over tea with my sister Sarah as we discuss the spooky movie night Okay, hello welcome back. Sarah. Welcome to a different kind of Movie Night. We are recording in my living room the windows are open because it's a very mild day. It was raining earlier so you might hear some rain, or possibly some jet noise because the Jets are flying today. But we are here today with spooky movie night because Sarah gave a big smile but that doesn't come through in the podcast and right because neither of us like scary movies. And we cannot be the only two out there. So you know we don't want it we don't want we don't like being scared. We like a bit of thrill bit of mystery, but don't like to be scared so you may recall from last year in our auto movie night Sara included one monster movie which was Monsters University which I wish I could have picked again but here we are spooky movie night it's great well it's it's monster movie night monster Yeah, technically monster mash so before we dive into our actual list Why don't we discuss like what what we're going for here with this spooky what what defines a spooky movie to you? Like why did the things on your list make your list? Well I have this time I decided I'd probably needed some different I put keywords like next to each one like what the kind of where it fits into spooky feeling. Okay, so Okay. Nothing across the board. I think for me, actually. Oh, alright. So would you like to give us your criteria as you go through each sure I'll I'll mention that the year Run out the little points that I put next to it that gotcha why this fits into spooky season as they say, okay, so yeah, I, that's fine. All of mine tend to have a bit of I would say mystery, a bit of suspense there can be some cold weather nothing super summery in its setting, but has some moments that might be like oh, or intense but mostly it's just you're you're confused and you want to know the end of it. And I think all of them have really nice like cozy autumnal spooky vibes. So when you want that movie night, or if if you have friends that are like okay, scary movie Halloween is coming up, right? You can suggest one of these, which is maybe halfway. That sounds good. How many do you have on your list? Really? I have four and maybe a bonus or two? Oh, well, we'll see how it goes. Okay. Well, first, let's talk about let's pour the tea. I'll pour the tea and you tell us what we're having. What are we having? Oh, oh, you said vanilla Chai? Yeah, yeah, we're having the dry shy today. In a pot. Do you want the black tea cup? Or the white one? The white one. Today? Of course with my. My outfit of pajamas better. Alright, the tea has been poured. Vanilla Chai yummly. So did you want to go first? Or shall I You go first. My first one. And we sort of mentioned this. Oh, yeah, I thought we were going to mention a few from in previous movie nights. I think some from fall some from winter. Yeah, we have included three movies that definitely would go into this category. But we've already talked about them. And those would be Murder on the Orient Express. knives out knives out and a quiet place. Which now we there's there's a sequel to that. That's true. And now I've seen them. Yeah, just as good. Yeah, very nice. So we won't we won't talk about those. But we would include those. Right? Let it be known. So my first one kind of feeling like knives out is clue. Oh my god. I have this one. Yeah, yeah. Clue is such a fun movie. What are my keywords next to it that I tell me? I put in parentheses funny. Dramatic, old rich housewives. That's the one year old rich house I think immediately puts it up. Right? Yeah, and what better than a movie that literally has three different endings. Right? Yeah. If you haven't seen clue, it is starring Tim Curry and I don't know who else. He's a big star. Yeah. Tim Curry is the butler. And it's basically the game of clue. There is a murder that happens. And it's a murder mystery. But it's hilarious. Like some of the jokes happen in weird times when you're like, did they just put a joke there? Like it's very strange. And a while since I've seen it. I love it is good. The music is so funny. It's very dramatic and dark. But in a funny way. I don't you know that I heard after I'd watched this movie for the first time that I think it's true. Yeah, I've heard about it that in the theater when this film came out. Because now you watch it on DVD, and they show you all three endings and how it all ties together. But different theaters showed different endings to the same movie. So people were arguing about it afterwards. I hope that's true. I should look that up. I think I've seen this movie streaming at some point, but I don't know if it is right now. But this is such a good movie. And I think I mean, it includes murder. And it has, there's a lightning storm. There's a big house, right? It checks time boxes. Yeah. Time a party might die. So if someone's like, oh, let's do spooky movie. This one is great. Yeah. Okay, well, could you go ahead with your first and I'll see it's on if it's on mine. Okay. I've got Edward Scissorhands on. Okay, now I don't have that. Okay. I thought about it, but it's so Christmassy at the end. It is Christmas. For me. You know, the, like, big Nightmare Before Christmas fans that's in the same vein for me. Like Okay, we're sober through December. Right, right. Really, I could watch it in a different season as well. You know, it's not it's not Oh, it's cold weather. I think it's because of the bright colors. Yeah. Like the movie. It is bizarre. And I think I find it funnier than it's meant to be. For some reason. I think it's meant to be I think it's because I just hits it is kind of it's just strange. But some of it is just so funny to me and the side with the water bed. I mean when like that's when he's getting makeup put on him and stuff. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's and she's so sweet. heggs character and I kind of just like Wynonna rider and anything. Yeah, no. So yeah, it's been a while since I've seen its big movies on this list, but, but that counts. Yeah, I thought I think that's a good pick. Okay, my next one is the prestige. I have this one too. Okay. And it's a good movie. It's a good pick for this. And if Tony ever listens to this, he'll be glad our brother Tony, this is his favorite film now. Yeah, of all time. Let's see what are my key words and give us your words? Oh, wait, what were your words for Edward Scissorhands. Oh, oh, I neglected that one. Oh, I was putting my disclaimer that said near Christmassy. Okay, but for the prestige I have circus magic supernatural. Well circus there you go right. Circle magic supernatural. Yeah. And that you know, whenever we talk about the prestige with Tony I always bring up the movie The Illusionist, but that movie doesn't have the same vibe to me. Even though it's also magician also dark. I don't put it it's something about the spooky movie night has to be a little bit fun or funny. Or not. It's not heavy. It's not a heavy movie to me. Hmm. You know, clue is funny. Right? I think Let me take a look at my list. I mean, the prestige is not a comedy. You know, it's not I don't know. So I'm, but no, I have quite a few of mine have comedic elements, which just fun. I think that's what people around Halloween time and all of that you watch things just for the fun of it and for the togetherness. But the prestige is probably the most serious one I have gotten. It's action packed. It's I mean Hugh Jackman, in the really, this is his good circus movie if you ask me. Yeah. And Christian Bale, and Scarlett Johansson and David Bowie, Jim bale. And it's just basically a war between these two magicians. Whenever there's a battle of magicians, it's always good. And historical costuming. Yes, yes. And just big question marks. You're like, What is going on? And then at the end, you're like, what? And then it keeps going, and you're just over and over, just like what is happening. And then it's done. And this is, in my opinion, the perfect blend of like, everything is clearly laid out in front of you. But you would never put it together right? until the end of the movie. Even though it's not like it sneaks up on you. And you're like, Well, that was misplaced, like yeah, that came out of nowhere, like came out of everywhere. But you I even if you get some parts of it, you're not going to guess everything. Not even Josh and Josh is really good at guessing what happens. Yeah, you know how I can like if I've watched a movie only once. I probably won't really remember it but I'll remember how I felt about it and whether or not I liked it, but I will not remember a whole lot of content. I have to watch a movie at least twice to remember a lot of the content is one immediately. I we've discussed it so much after watching it and I've thought about it so much that I feel like I actually remember this one. Yeah, we have talked about it at length, but I think it's a great one. It's always gonna make your your brain work. Did you say that one or me? Um, I said it, but it was on your list. So I'll let you go. Okay. I threw this one on here about is this a go with me? 40 minutes ago. All right. It is kind of a go with me. I have on this list. Nanny McPhee. Okay. Okay, but I buy it. Okay. Explain your rationale. Now, if you will. For one. I like Colin Firth and Emma Thompson. Yep. We're already having a good time. Okay. Old House. Uh huh. Cozy clutter? Yes. Okay. And magical element magical. There you go. Yeah, but but like, but it also has a bit of like, there's a few moments where you're terrified. Yeah. There's some unsettling there's some big unsettling Yeah. And, and she's very ugly. Yeah. It's sort of via unsettling imagery. Yeah, here and there. But not to the point like I won't even watch the movie Coraline, because I'm like, that is know how I film to me. Yeah. Yeah. movie that you think Tim Burton should have been involved in? And he wasn't. Right. And then you know, it's sweet still. Yeah, but I get it. It's kind of weird. Good. I'm glad to know I see it that checks out historical fashion, and it's truly It's a family film, but I mean, I've kind of been wanting to watch it again. Yeah, it is super weird if you'd like tried to explain the story to someone that would be like, this was a fever dream or something. Yeah, not real and the whole like the set and costuming, the look of the characters are colorful, very colorful. pseudo historically inspired but with like a lot of, yeah, a lot of color and just stuff. Yeah. A lot of stuff and embellishment, so great. Well mine. My next one is Sherlock Holmes. And it's equal a Game of Shadows. Game of Shadows is great for this list. Yeah, but like the banter. Sherlock Holmes is good. From September till March, any day of the week. It just fits, I think. Yeah. And I love Jude Law. Yep. And I think Robert Downey Jr. does such a good job. It's it's the essence of Sherlock and talk about a score. The score is so I think zany would be great. Yeah. Yeah, I love the coloring is beautiful. It feels like autumn. There's a mystery. Still moments of funny. The second one ends with a humungous question mark, literally, but I don't know if they're gonna make any more. But that's okay. Because like everyone knows, like, if you've ever read Sherlock Holmes, or this will make you familiar with any other iteration of Sherlock. Yeah, we know that it's gonna end up this way. But I love them. I think they're great movies. Yeah. And I remember it being you know, the second movie especially being popular when the BBC Sherlock series was on television. Yes, the comparisons were endless. And yet, I enjoy both portrayals. Yeah, the character that does not usually happen. I like both. They're completely different. Yeah, sure. Watson. And the Moriarty characters are totally different. And I love them for different reasons. Yeah, we don't usually do that. Every other iteration of Sherlock is a house divided. Oh, no. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Well, there you go. That's good. Okay, tell me if you remember this one. duplex. I don't remember this at all. This is a movie. That is a I'm pretty sure it's set in cold weather, the most of it anyway. It is a dark comedy. Okay, starring Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore. Did you watch this movie, I feel like I saw it. Like once you have to refresh my memory. They he uh, his character is a writer. And they move into a duplex in New York with this old Irish lady who turns out to be a big old pain. And they like want her death. But the way the story unfolds is so it is funny, and it's a dark comedy, and it's pretty well done. So you feel like I shouldn't be laughing at this, but you still are. And I? I never would have thought to see the two those two actors together. Yeah, that's a couple unlikely pair. Um, but I like them both. Quite a bit. And it's. it's enjoyable. I saw this one's a long time ago. Yeah, I've been wanting to watch it again. But yeah, creaky house. Mysterious Irish lady. Yeah. And old house. Mm hmm. In the cold weather. Nice. Nice. Do you have any more rationale with that? Are your words in print listed? I put? No, I basically said it. Oh, okay. Okay, here's my one off the wall that you're not going to know about? rear window. Okay. It is an Alfred Hitchcock film. And I like this movie. Because if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, I want to Yeah, the main character is like, I think he's recovering from an injury or something. He's like an invalid of some kind. And he doesn't leave his apartment, the entire movie. But the whole thing is he's watching lay. Yeah, that is so funny. But he is watching with a telescope. The people in the quad and across the courtyard in his apartment complex and the whole thing is him watching and he witnesses what he believes to be a murder. And he's like thinking Am I going crazy? I love it because whenever he's looking through the telescope, it will show you what he's looking at. But it's all black except for the circle, you know. So then it'll be panning across the scene and you can only see what's in this narrow tube. The rest of the screen is black around it. And you know, Alfred Hitchcock very good at just like slightly unsettling. Like, what's going on. Also Grace Kelly, isn't it and she's stunning. And everything she wears is gorgeous. So there's moments of that where you just like, ah, but the whole thing is this guy trying to figure out Am I crazy? Or did I see a murder? Right? Well, that's good. Yeah, it's like, okay, there was a show no, a movie that came out recently with Amy Adams, where she's like, agoraphobic or something and she does the same kind of thing. She looks out window and she thinks she sees a murder. And I was thinking, Oh, this is like a window. And everyone in their reviews was like this was not very good. It was like a less good version of rear window. So if that looked interesting to anyone who's listening that new movie with Amy Adams, I mean you can watch it for her because who doesn't love Amy? But really go watch rear window? It's really good. I look good. I'll have to watch that. Well, I've got one more with an asterisk by it because it's kind of a Ha ha ha. Who would think to put this on oh okay movie list. Okay not like you don't know what it is already because we're planning to watch it Yeah, no, it's the last no I have a couple more but yes, let's talk about it. It's no why No Why? 1937 because listen, just literally yesterday or the day before I went back and I watched the scene where the Evil Queen transforms herself. Oh yeah, it is intense. Like the scene is so good. And it is terrifying. It is especially when you are 96 years old. sat in front of your parents television. No more than three feet away. I watched that movie so much growing up and still get scared looking at that characteristic as well. The music whenever the Evil Queen comes in the magic mirror himself Oh the mirrors terrified yes no eyeball. I mean I like watching the movie because I like the movie right? Which I feel that you know the most other people especially my age wouldn't would not enjoy it in that way is I don't think people most people our age probably don't even know like or can't remember what happens in that movie right? everybody's seen it but you don't know really what? Except for she bit the apple. No, but there's so much yeah. And the music that I think is wack when they call them gags the humor in the movie. cracks me up. I you know you really if you surrender yourself? Yeah, the 1937 movie experience. It is so much fun. And you get all of the there's a cottage there's warm autumn vibes. There's literally apple pie. Yeah, she makes soup on a fireplace. You cannot get more cozy fall. We can't but it's spooky then Snow White and the Seven. Yeah, it's really great. Can't wait to watch it. Okay, so I have one more that was on my list. And I think it's just great for this, and it's The Goonies. Oh, yeah. Okay, so I feel silly. I yeah, there's a mystery. There's an ensemble cast. That it's all chaotic. There's thinking this is really a monster when you think about it. There's high stakes there's pirate motif. Oh, it's a great movie. Josh couldn't get all the way through it. We might have to watch it again. He was tired but he really didn't vibe with it. That kind of was like oh no bummed you out a little although I couldn't get through the good the bad and the ugly without falling asleep so we were kind of even in that respect. Well we'll have to try it again with the boys then because i don't i don't think Christian seen it for a long time. He's maybe only seen it. This time with the pipe organ with the skeleton bones. Yeah. Yeah. That was so stressful. And I always felt like oh, that would be it. That would be my to I would be that Guney. Right? They would look at me and be like, you decipher the sheet music. She was bad. But anyway, yeah, like yourself which Guney are you? Which one would you be? The one where she would be stiff when she steps on the rake and the dead? That's all well, I would be Andy in that one scene, but she's a nervous wreck. Yeah, I would really be Mikey. I feel probably Yeah, I would be like let's do it. We it's our time down here. I would be Mikey and brand simultaneously. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think I'd probably be Steph actually. Yeah, that's pretty good. Um, and then just as we were talking and you mentioned Edward Scissorhands. I think we should, you know, give props to Tim Burton, because I feel like a lot of his I can't do Sweeney Todd. And or Coraline, we've discussed this, but I've seen Coraline once because I had to know what in the world is this movie? And I don't feel like we'll be watching that again. I saw an hour before Christmas as well. Yeah. But it totally could go right into this category. And you've never seen the Hokey Pokey. Have you? Hocus Pocus? Yeah, no, I have yet to. I watched that for the first time. last Halloween in preparation for a trivia night. And I was like, Okay, well, and I think I feel like that that is what isn't it a Halloween specific kind of movie? It is. Yeah. So I didn't want to bother with those. Like the very obvious right? Exactly. But in wants in, in in terms of Tim Burton I think we should also mention Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory true those those did cross my mind are a little sneaky I don't. Yeah. Also as a Alice, Alice in Wonderland, the Tim Burton about the sequel, I will say Alice Through the Looking Glass i thought was superior. I thought it was even better to cook I watched both of like, it's been a very long time. Yeah. While I was preparing this list, I would I would just like to say that I wish that I could put on this list. If it were a movie, the musical a gentleman's guide to love and murder. Oh, it would be perfect. Yeah. Yeah, that and wicked. Over true. Yeah. Yeah, but that's that's our our list. I think you were pretty well stocked and yeah, what was their overlap? prestige. snowwhite. And clue right? If you had to pick one that there was like, time for one movie night with, with people with your friends or family? Who am I kidding? our family, our friends? Whatever. Hello, if you could have one family spooky movie night. Which one do you think? Um, well, depends on which one I've seen the most recently. Yeah. Honestly, clues. So good. Yeah. You can't really go wrong with it. No matter what crowd you're with. Yeah, crowd. Flames flames on the side of my face. It's just loved him. I loved it. He can say anything. And for some reason, I will think it is funny. His lips. Play it on repeat. I'm the buckler is. Oh, my God was funny. Yeah. Well, thank you. I'm glad we could do this right. And have a bit of an extension of Movie Night but without committing ourselves to a whole nother year. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we may do much more movie nights in the future. But of fimi of CME Yeah. Good. Well, before before we go, and you can finish your teed. Do you have a little joy to share with me and the listeners? This is like your your fifth podcast with me and you're always caught off guard. I am. I always forget. Well, I guess what comes to mind? Well, of the future. I think this will be like my third food one. That's fine. Okay, that's just fine. Yesterday I went to an Indian restaurant. That's good. And the little salad that I ate the little baby salad they served with what I now know this read just generally referred to as green chutney, Indian green chutney. That is a mint, cilantro green chili chutney and it to me, I don't think I'd had that one there before it had you know different salad dressing a ginger something. But this was so cracked out. I wanted to bring it home. I wanted to wash my face in it. I dipped a little bit of non. And like I forgot about the salad after eight years. Like let me just that I became your salad. Else. greenshot. And I'm still thinking about it. I've been googling recipes. I have to make some I know, in one of my favorite cookbooks that I mentioned in the favorite cookbook, podcast episode. One is our tea party and she has a recipe for green chutney and it's not a it's like kind of a staple. You know? Yeah. But I don't eat Indian food as often as I eat, say Thai food or, or go out for fall or something like that. Yeah. Especially in restaurant. I'll cook a lot of Indian food, but I'm right, right, right, right. It was insane. Oh, wow. So why I really need some of that again, green chutney. It was very joyful. very joyful. Great. Well, um, as far as playlist, I can do what I have done in the past and make a playlist. Well, I like listening to your lists. Oh, alright. think that it's fun. I like to guess so when? When? When we played that last time? Yeah, I was proud of them. The PlayList I've made. Okay, so I'll do that. I will have a playlist consisting of the scores of every film that we've mentioned today. Yeah. And I like to like weave them into each other. So you don't know what's from what. But it'll just be the whole October feeling. That's good. Well, yay. Thank you for coming on the podcast. Yeah. And I'm sure you'll return for more movie talk. Yes. I don't think you'll be able to talk about anything else on this podcast at this point. Great. Okay, that's fine. Oh, Right. And there you go. I hope you enjoyed our conversation and that you've got maybe a little list going now, for a movie night of your own. One year I did actually watch The Goonies with some friends of mine with like an outdoor garage projector, and we washed it outside and had popcorn and like, I think there was Halloween candy. And that is a really great memory. For me when it comes to this time of year. I say you can also never go wrong with smores. So keep that in the back of your mind. And as I mentioned, in the conversation, I will be linking a playlist consisting of all the scores from these films. For anyone who's unaware I, I studied music composition in school, with the expectation of being a film composer, which you know, who knows might still happen. But basically, this is the most fun thing in the world for me to make playlists out of existing soundtracks to create a sort of sequential mood from one place to another place, so feel free to check that out if you are interested. I will also be linking trailers and scenes from all these movies in the show notes that's at life on the brink dot live. I'll also share some pictures of fun fall memories and stuff like that. So between this episode and the last episode, I have shared pretty much everything that I know in love When it comes to the fall season. So I hope that it is a wonderful start to the fall for you wherever you are, and that you are able to live it up and enjoy it as much as possible. Thank you so much for listening again. And I will be back in two weeks with a new episode. So until then, enjoy your fall and enjoy your movie night. Thank you for tuning into this episode of life on the brink.
