What if you could transform your productivity and align your actions with your deepest goals simply by understanding your states of being? On this week’s episode of "Believe Like a Boss," we break down the concept of states of being and their profound impact on our everyday lives.

We explore three primary states—consuming, consciousness, and a third, which we’ll reveal later. Consuming is all about taking in information, whether it’s through books, TV, or social media. Consciousness, on the other hand, is about being mindful and aware without judgment—think meditation or body scans. By diving into these states, you'll gain insights on how to better align your daily actions with your long-term goals.

Balancing the states of consuming, consciousness, and creating is key to achieving a harmonious and productive life. Through personal anecdotes and practical tips, I illustrate how to make mindful adjustments in our habits, such as incorporating more educational content into leisure activities.

Reflect on important questions regarding your time management: Are you happy with how much time you’re spending in each state? What adjustments could make your life more fulfilling? This episode encourages a deep self-reflection on your consumption habits, awareness levels, and creative projects. Plus, if you’re looking for more personalized guidance, one-on-one coaching is available. Don't forget to share this episode with friends and leave a five-star rating if you find it helpful!

Speaker 2:

Hello, hello, hello and welcome back to another episode of Believe Like a Boss. I am your host life coach, Nandi Camille. Welcome back, my friends, this week we're talking about states of being. So this is a concept that I came up with that when I was just thinking about how we show up in the world and different states, I was actually getting on Tyler's case about consuming too much. That's one of the states of being we're going to talk about today and I recognize and I call my husband out all the time, but as I call him out, I also recognize what I also need to work on. So in calling him out for quote, consuming too much, consuming too much television, being on his phone too much, whatever it is I also noticed what are some of the other states of being that we just exist in as human beings and as a mindfulness-based life coach mindfulness being awareness, without judgment how can I be more aware of the states of being that I'm in and then use that to my advantage to better align my time to match my goals? So, if you've been feeling stuck, if you've been feeling out of alignment, if you've been feeling like I want to be more proactive and more productive with my time in a way that's in alignment, not in a hustly. Everything needs to happen all at once. I'm going to run a marathon tomorrow. I'm going to run a marathon tomorrow. I'm going to start an empire. I mean, you could start an empire tomorrow, but you're not going to build an entire empire overnight, right? So this is when I'm talking about states of being. Today is meant to help you mindfully check in on how you show up in the world, essentially right, based on these three states of being. So the first state of being and I would say that there's probably more states of being, but these were the three main ones that I would say are the most prevalent in our lives and the women that I'm working with, which are high achieving women and creative entrepreneurs. So, in the consuming category, if you're in a state of being in which you are consuming, this is when we might be reading, we might be learning, whether it's reading a book or listening to a podcast or an audible book, or scrolling on social media.

Speaker 2:

This is also consuming. You're consuming information. You're looking at other people's reels or TikToks, whatever it is, you're consuming information. There's also TV watching. Again, you're consuming. You're looking at other people's reels or TikToks, whatever it is You're consuming information. There's also TV watching. Again, you're consuming. You're watching a television show, you're watching a movie. You are taking in information. So consuming.

Speaker 2:

None of these, I would say, are good or bad. So let me say that as a disclaimer. Are you saying that some states of being are good and some states of being are bad? No, I'm just naming the three most prevalent or prominent states of being. One of them is consuming, and consuming can be anything from TV watching to reading, right, and you're taking in information. You are consuming. Think about eating. You're taking in information, right, so this is a state of being. Information, right. So this is a state of being.

Speaker 2:

The second state of being that I noticed was consciousness. So, consuming or conscious? If you're consuming, you're taking in information. If you're conscious, this is where mindfulness lives, this is where we're aware, we're taking inventory. This is where, if you practice meditation, your meditation teacher or the person on your app might invite you to a body scan where you start at the head or you start at the toes and you move through the body and you notice. How do my shoulders feel, how does my breath feel as it's coming in through my nose and out through my mouth. How do my lungs feel, how do my thighs feel? Literally scanning the body, just noticing how it feels. You're being conscious. This might be in a waiting room or in line at Chipotle or TSA, and this is when you're not on your phone. Right, if you're on your phone and in line, you're consuming. But let's say, you're just in line and you're just noticing the person in front of you and you're noticing the fluorescent lights where you are and you're noticing the skirt that the girl next to you has on and you're noticing the music that the establishment has chosen to play as background music. Right, you're just observing. This is what the state of consciousness is.

Speaker 2:

Right, and we were talking about states of being. This might be the morning tea or the morning coffee, where you're just thinking about your day. You're making that cup of coffee, you're just going through the motions of doing that. Like, as you're sipping your coffee, you might just be walking around your house or thinking about the day you're going to have, observing how you feel, observing how your home feels. A few weeks ago it might be a month ago now we talked about doing a want walk through your house, right, walking through your home or really anywhere you want to. You could do this in the mall, you could do it wherever you want, where you're just walking and noticing your wants as they naturally arise, right. So these are when you're doing check-ins, when you're journaling, when you're meditating. This is the state of conscious consciousness where you're aware, right, you're just aware of what's going on. Like I said, this is where mindfulness lives. My running definition of mindfulness is awareness without judgment.

Speaker 2:

Now, the third state of being I named creating. So we have consuming, we have conscious. Third one is creating, creating. I feel like it's pretty straightforward. Think creation, creator. Right, when you're creating. This is when you're building a website. It's when you're designing your evening routine or your fitness routine. It's when you're meeting with your coach and you're creating a plan with your coach. It's when you're planting your herb garden or putting on an event up on Eventbrite. It's when you're working on your content, right? This can also be where play lives, right? This is where you're hiking, you're painting, you're dancing. I would also put that in the creating category. You might not be creating anything physical, you're not producing a work of art that you can hand to somebody, but I would say that you are still creating through movement, when you're hiking, when you're painting, when you're dancing, painting you could obviously hand that to somebody. But these were the three states of being, as I was reflecting on myself and on my clients and even my husband how I show up in the world, how we show up in the world. These are the three states that I found to be the most prevalent themes.

Speaker 2:

So what do you do with this information? Consuming, conscious or creating? What I did with this information is it allowed me to kind of zoom out and check in. If I were to look at my calendar, if I were to look at a week of time spent, even a day, right, use whatever parameter of time works best for you. Make sure it's doable. If it feels more doable to just look at one day, do that. If it feels better to look at a whole week or whole month, then do that. But when you're looking at that frame of time, check in. Am I consuming? Am I being conscious? Am I creating? What parts of my day am I consuming and what parts of my day am I being conscious and what parts of my day am I creating? And I think what's lovely about this is when we check in.

Speaker 2:

You might notice for you, oh my gosh, I'm doing a lot of consuming. I'm going to work and I'm reading about information at work and then I'm coming home and I'm scrolling on my phone and then, after I scroll on my phone, I watch tv and there's a little bit of creating in there. I create my dinner, and so, between scrolling on social media and TV show, I do create dinner there. So there's some creating there. Then I go back to consuming and so when I go to right before I go to bed, I noticed I'm consuming. And then as soon as I wake up, I'm picking up my phone. I'm on social media again, or I'm reading, or I'm learning or listening to a podcast. I'm still consuming. Huh, that's interesting.

Speaker 2:

I actually don't have a lot of conscious in my day to day. I'm not spending any time reflecting on my day. I'm not spending any time reflecting on what I want. You might be the opposite, where you spend a lot of time in conscious. I spend a lot of time walking and meditating and journaling and then spend a lot of time consuming and listening to podcasts and reading books, but I'm noticing I'm not actually spending a lot of time creating. I'm not applying the information that I'm learning about, I'm not applying the things that I'm so excited about. I might be journaling and meditating on this big beautiful business, or this big beautiful life that I have, or this partnership I'm going to call in, or whatever it is, but I'm not actually taking the time to create, I'm not actually going out in the world and creating anything, and so what I really would love for you to do is just to check in Mindfulness, awareness without judgment. Be aware without judgment, of what your day looks like, what your day-to-day looks like, what your weekends versus your weekdays look like. Right, as you break it down, as you look at how you're spending your time, how much time are you consuming? How much time are you being conscious? How much time are you creating?

Speaker 2:

So I have four questions that I've written down for you guys to help you unpack this a little bit more. Take what sticks to you, leave the rest. You know the drill. First question for you is how much time are you spending in each category? So it's the question that I just asked. Take a timeframe Again, it could be a day, could be week, could be a month and check in how much time am I spending in each category. I would recommend starting with a day, just start with one day, a 24-hour period for when you wake up to when you go to bed, right?

Speaker 2:

How much time are you spending consuming versus being conscious, versus creating check-in? And again, it's not that when you notice, oh, I'm doing all this consuming and I'm conscious but I'm not creating. Or I'm creating a lot but I'm not actually spending a lot of time being conscious. There's not. I'm not here to tell you that there's one perfect way. I love everything in moderation. I truly, whether it's food or it's habits, whatever, it is everything moderation. So I love to spend a little bit of time in consuming, a little bit of time in conscious, a little bit of time in creating and then also being thoughtful about what I'm consuming. Right? Maybe, if I'm that one third of the pie, will say I'm consuming. Checking in on that one third of the pie, what does that consumption look like? Is it 100% me being on social media? Is it 100% me watching TV? It's a little bit of TV, a little bit social, a little bit of TV, a little bit social, a little bit of podcasting. I really, truly love to check in.

Speaker 2:

Oh, you know what my consuming lately has been actually a lot of television and I don't really want that as much. Or I really noticed for me that for Tyler and I when I was going through my day, part of our quality time does pertain to consuming. There are certain TV shows he and I will binge watch from the beginning. We love older shows, we love sitcoms. Right now we're going through I want to say it was born in like the seventies, eighties, good times and I feel like I'm shooting myself in the foot by not knowing when it was produced. But it's an older sitcom, black sitcom and so we're watching that. We just finished Bob's Burgers. We just started. What else did we just start? There's a few different TV shows. So Tyler and I love to watch sitcoms and we love older ones. And so for me I noticed that recently, or I've known that for a while.

Speaker 2:

But what I noticed recently was that while I loved to watch TV with him and I really do enjoy watching these shows with him what I'm finding for me is that I'm wanting a little bit more education in my consumption. So yes, tyler and I love to watch TV and we really love sitcoms, but I'm wanting to intermix that a little bit more with the History Channel and the Discovery Channel. Or the other night he asked me what I wanted to watch. I said can we watch a cooking show? I really would like to actually learn a little bit more about cooking. So that way, when I'm going to make dinner lately, dinner has not been as fun for me to make and I recognize that that was because I have I've stopped studying cooking, I've stopped studying the art of cooking and different seasonings I can use and different foods I can use.

Speaker 2:

And so this is a digression, but a really deep example of truly like, when we take a moment to look at what am I consuming and do I like the way I'm consuming and do I like the way that I'm showing up and you get to check in? For me it was like a mostly yes. It would be better if I also learned while I was watching TV and spending this quality time with Tyler. So take this information in, take it for you as you look at your day do you like how you're consuming? Do you like how you're being conscious? Do you like how you're creating? And if you don't, this is the second question, right? Do you like how you're doing all of these things? If you don't, what would you change?

Speaker 2:

So, to be a little bit more concise, the second question is do you like how much time you're spending in each category? Right Point blank period. Do you like how much time you are spending in each category? And as you look at each category, check in in my consumption what are you doing In my conscious spaces? What am I doing In my creation spaces? What am I doing and do I like what I'm doing in each category and how much time I'm spending in each category? So just quick check it.

Speaker 2:

Third question ideally, what are you doing in each category? I feel like I really got ahead of myself in this episode because I got really excited, but that last example, which is not written at all in my script, I kind of I went off script then, but that last example really illustrates this. Third question Ideally, what are you doing in each category, right? So if you're doing a lot of conscious work and you're doing a lot of journaling and you're loving it, fantastic, keep doing it. And if you notice I'm doing a lot of journaling and you're loving it, fantastic, keep doing it. And if you notice I'm doing a lot of journaling. But I actually want to meditate a little bit more, or I want to do body scans, or maybe none of that is important to you, but you're just like you know what.

Speaker 2:

It wouldn't hurt if I didn't pick up my phone when I had my coffee in the morning. What if, just for the first five minutes of me making coffee, it's phone free time. It's phone free time. It's just time for me to check in with me and myself and my body and how I'm feeling and what I need to do to get ready for the day. Right, that is a no phone time. That's true for me, right? What do you want to be true for you? Ideally? This is the third question again what are you doing in each category? So your homework, having said all this, is kind of not the last question, but the last bullet. Your homework for this is for one week walk through your tasks and label them. Notice. Are you consuming? Is this a conscious, is this creating? Notice how your day breaks down and notice how you feel as a result of how that day breaks down.

Speaker 2:

So the other way to look at this is, if you've been feeling frustrated, out of alignment, upset, anxious, depressed right, our lower level emotions. If you've been feeling any of those. It's not that they're inherently wrong or bad. I want to make sure I throw that out there. You're not broken. There's nothing wrong with you, right? We feel like there's something wrong with us and in that space, that's where I would really really offer for you to look at how are you spending your time, because, clearly, how you are spending your time and your energy and your thought, space is not ultimately serving you. If you are walking around feeling resentful, frustrated, angry most of the time right, it's not that you can't feel angry or frustrated. Those emotions are so important for us to have.

Speaker 2:

The differentiation is, if you're walking around feeling that way most of the time, there's a good chance that maybe we're consuming too much, maybe we're not spending enough time being conscious, maybe we're not creating things that make us happy that is usually what I find is the case is, if we are feeling excessively depressed, frustrated, overwhelmed, we're spending a lot of time in that consumption category and not as much time in the creation or consciousness categories. Right, taking the time to think about the information we're taking in and how it impacts us and then taking aligned action from that place. A lot of us get stuck in consumption and we start consuming and then we compare and despair and then there's the downward spiral. So then we don't want to take action because we're conscious of how crappy we feel. So check in this.

Speaker 2:

Really, truly want this to be a tool for your tool belt the states of being. Are you consuming? Are you being conscious? Are you creating? My recommendation is that you're doing all three. There's nothing wrong with watching TV. There's nothing wrong with social media inherently, but are you also taking time to create? Are you also taking time to check in? And really this information that I've taken in, let's say you're scrolling on Instagram. You're just consuming. How often are you checking to see how your scrolling just made you feel? Have you ever checked in before you get on social media? How do I feel? Truly, ask yourself that question.

Speaker 2:

And then you get on social media, you spend some time there. How do you feel afterwards? Sometimes we feel super inspired because we follow really inspiring people and we're really excited and it feels really good. Other times we get off because we're cranky, because homegirl we went to high school with is buying a gorgeous home and having her third child and lives in Europe and we're pissed about it. And so check in. That's where we get to be conscious.

Speaker 2:

Maybe you were consuming and that consumption made you feel some type of way. That's when we get to check in and be conscious. Why am I feeling the way that I'm feeling? What thought was just born that is now creating this feeling in my body? What did I just consume that is now creating this feeling in my body? That's where we get to bring it into consciousness. And then from there, if we notice, ah, I'm jealous of homegirl from high school because of X, y and Z. Ah, that gives me some stepping stones. I want to move to Europe, I want to have children, I want to X, y and Z. Okay, so then, if I want to create those things and I believe that it's possible for me to what next best step might I take? Then we move into creating. Right, how do I create from this place? That's where we take the consuming and we turn it into creating. There's nothing wrong with consuming. I just don't want you to get stuck in a downward spiral. And here's the other thing consuming again. I've said it many times that I really wanted this to be clear.

Speaker 2:
