I'll teach you how to create what I like to call a life of thrive, with ease and authenticity. It's time to play with what's possible. Are you ready? Let's go.

Speaker 2:

Hello, hello, hello. Welcome back to another episode of Believe Like a Boss. I am your host, nandi Camille. Welcome back. My friends, I am recording this from Los Angeles, california, and I am filled with so many emotions and, as I was thinking about this week and what I want to put out on the podcast, the big thing that's coming up for me is the differences and the nuances between belief and faith, because last week we just got off the heels of talking about manifestation, co-creation use the term that works best for you but the dance between action and faith and thought work, and so I kind of want to unpack that a little bit more, being that I'm in Los Angeles.

Speaker 2:

I just did the photo shoot for Every Eve Yesterday and, my goodness, my friends, there's so many thoughts that go into when you have a goal right. For me, the goal was to be a model, and this is something that I got on the phone with my mom before I flew out to Los Angeles and she said to me you have wanted this since you were a little girl and that reflection back to me was huge, because I know that I've had every on my vision board for the past five years board, but my mom. Talking to her really helped me to zoom out and recognize that this is something that's been placed on my heart my whole life. And here I am, at 31, realizing this goal. And I say that because I want to give grace and space to anybody that's putting pressure on themselves to have done the thing that they want to do already. And that's also why I want to talk about faith and belief, because I do feel as though the two get smushed together. Anyway, coming into Los Angeles, having this experience, having wanted to do this my entire life, you have these ideas and these thoughts of how it's going to go about. And then, truly yesterday, like having people running get me shoes, having people run in and out on set doing my hair, doing my makeup, fixing up any oil spots, fixing up literal little strands of hair that are blowing away I've had this thought and this dream of what it would look like to be a model forever, and then to have had this experience yesterday was one of the most expansive moments of my entire life and I'm so grateful for it. So, coming off of that, I want to break down some of the differences that I feel will help you in kind of navigating. Okay, what do I do when I'm talking about thought work, and what is the difference between thought work slash belief? Is there a difference? As always, my friends, if you're new here, welcome to the podcast. Take what sticks to you, leave the rest.

Speaker 2:

I am a mindfulness-based life coach, which means we are going to do everything, having awareness, without judgment. We're going to be aware of our thoughts, we're going to be aware of our actions, we're going to be aware of what's going on in our world and then, from that place, decide what we want to keep, what's working, so to speak, what we want to keep what's working, so to speak, what we want to let go of what's not working, and then, from that place, what's next. And so, as I'm breaking down belief versus faith Again last week we were talking about manifestation, co-creation For me, it's this practice of getting clear on what you want, getting very clear, like I want to be a dancer, I want to be a teacher, I want to be calm, I want to fly to India, whatever it is, I want a glass of water. Right, it doesn't have to always be like outrageous and flying across the world, it could literally be. I want to feel better in my body. I want to wake up consistently in the morning earlier. I want to consistently have a bedtime routine that feels better for me and sets me up for my next day.

Speaker 2:

Right, whatever it is, but getting clear on what it is that you want and then checking in Is there anything in my body, is there anything in my brain, is there anything in my spirit that says I cannot have that thing? You can't wake up at 5am every single day. You barely get out of bed to get to work on time. Right, you can't fly to India. You don't have enough money in your bank account to pay your rent next month. You can't dot dot dot, right. So noticing, then, all the things that say you can't dot dot, dot, right. So noticing then all the things that say you can't have a thing that you say that you want, and then rewriting those quote, limiting beliefs, and then leaving yourself with the thoughts of, even though I'm nervous about going to India and even though I don't know how I'm going to create that reality, I believe that it's possible and these are the next steps I'm going to take, and I'm going to show up as if it's already done. I'm going to show up as if I already have that ticket to India and I'm going, which means I'm studying the language, I'm studying where I'm traveling. I might not be able to physically buy my tickets, but I'm doing research on them, right? So that's what we talked about last week.

Speaker 2:

Now, breaking it down a little bit more what is belief versus faith? My running faith, my running definition, is going to be that belief are thoughts. You think again and again. I think that so many times belief just automatically gets thrown into the faith bucket and there's. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. But I want to break them down a little bit, because I feel like when you inherently throw belief into faith, that's where I think people throw it into religion. Belief work is religious work, it's spiritual work and it can be, but it isn't inherently right. So again, a belief is just a thought. You think again and again. There's nothing really spiritual about that. If you believe you can drive a car, it's because you've thought I can drive a car again and again. You've seen yourself physically drive a car again and again. If you think, thought, I believe I can pour this glass of water, I believe I can walk across the street, you've seen yourself take the action. There's no faith required there, right? A belief is just a thought you think again and again.

Speaker 2:

Now, sometimes a belief will require faith, but that is not inherently the case, right. When you're going to believe a new thing, that is, to think a new thought maybe you want to believe I can take a plane trip to india. I can backpack across the country. I've never seen myself do that. So that thought may require some faith, right, but thoughts themselves do not always require faith, and that's where I want to break it down.

Speaker 2:

Beliefs or thoughts are usually based in observation, right, so I've seen myself do this thing. That's why I believe that I can do it. That's why I think that I can walk across the street. That's why I think that I can apply for a job. So I think that I can dot, dot, dot. I've seen myself do it. I've observed myself do similar things and therefore I believe that I can Doesn't require faith, right.

Speaker 2:

That short and sweet seeing without believing. The metaphor that I use with my clients when we're talking about faith, when they're going to do something that they've never done before, when they're going to take a step, is, I tell them, I was like it's, it's imagining. I think Martin Luther King actually has a quote about this is that faith is like a staircase right, and it's you being able to take the next step not seeing the next step. It's this invisible staircase. It's you believing and knowing that the next step is available to you, even though you can't physically see it. It's taking your foot out from under you and placing it out and forward in front of you knowing like I don't see the step.

Speaker 3:

I don't really see it.

Speaker 2:

Like I just believe that my foot is going to land. My foot's going to land and I'm going to be on sturdy ground, even though I can't see that ground right now. That is my running definition of faith. Now, when we're talking about manifestation, when we're talking about co-creation and again, if you're new here, I'm using those words interchangeably, because for me, when I was starting my process, manifestation was a very scary word. It felt like I was removing God from it and for me and my Christian faith that did not feel good. Please make this feel good for you. Now I'm in a place where I can use manifestation freely, but I also want to just have that conversation for anybody that's early on in their journey. Co-creation for me really spoke to me. It still does. That felt more in alignment of like I'm working with God, I'm working with the universe, and so for me, faith is necessary for co-creation or manifestation, because it's you believing something that you've never seen yourself personally do before. Maybe you've seen Sierra dance on stages, but you've never seen yourself dance on stages. So if you're going to have the thought, I believe that I can dance on stages, there's a level of faith needed. I believe in this thing that I've never seen myself do. Right, you might have faith that other people can do things and, again, that it might not even be faith. It's just a belief that other people can do things. Because you've seen other people do things. I believe Sierra can be a superstar, because she is one, because I've seen her on stages. Right, it's not even. That's not faith. That's a belief because I have it based in thought, in fact, in evidence, right? So when I'm going to believe something new about myself, I believe that I can speak on stages, I believe that I can run companies, I believe that I can be a mom. Whatever it is that you want to believe for you that you have not seen yourself do before. That's where faith is required. That's where you have to see something that you've never seen before. From imagination, right From this place of I just see it in my brain. I just have this vision.

Speaker 2:

I was actually talking to the CEO of EverWeave the other day because she was there at the photo shoot and that, again, like when I tell you, is one of the most expansive days of my entire life. I'm not joking, I'm not exaggerating. I'm sitting down. I'm talking to the CEO of this beautiful retail brand that is national, that is growing, that is celebrating 20 years and that's why I've been picked as one of the models to come and celebrate 20 years with them. So I'm sitting and I'm talking to her and I asked her. I said hey, talk to me about your background. She and I are similar. She has a background in education. She was a third grade teacher and then she went on to start every event. You guys, I just, if I can get her on the podcast, I will but she went on to start this company with her husband. So her husband and her still work together.

Speaker 2:

And I was asking her. I was like, tell me the story. How did you go from being in education to then running this beautiful, thoughtful, intentional, profitable, successful, sustainable retail brand, fashion brand that is cutting through the industry in such a beautiful way? Right, usually, fashion is known as being cutthroat and kind of mean and kind of catty, and that is not the vibe at all. When you go into any of her retail brands, there's like a kid area for you to like, have your kid play with toys or eat goldfish while you're trying on clothes. The stylists there are so approachable and that is let me back up. So that was her experience.

Speaker 2:

She went to she's in education. She went to Nordstrom and at Nordstrom she wants to go shopping. And she had this just horrible experience and, from that place, decided I want to create a new experience for people who are shopping, who are having their you know, want to go to an event and need some help getting styled and need some help picking something out, but want to feel seen and don't want to feel judged and want to feel welcome. And she created that. She had a vision and had no proof that she could create a retail brand. She had no background in retail experience. Her husband had no background in retail experience he's a CPA, if I'm remembering correctly and so they just had a vision. We're going to create fashion brand, a retail brand that empowers the whole woman, the woman that's working hard and taking care of her family and taking care of herself. We're going to create a space for her. And so here we are, 20 years later.

Speaker 2:

Can you imagine the amount of faith both belief, work and faith necessary to build a brand from zero to now being successful for 20 years and growing? They have locations from Los Angeles to New York the thought work, if I'm going to assume for her. Right. Her thought work was likely somewhere on the work, the lines of I believe that I'm a person that can build a retail brand. I believe that I can put together a team right. Those were thoughts she had to think on purpose. That required faith, because she had never seen herself do it before. Right, so we're going to.

Speaker 2:

When you're doing this work, what I would really offer for you to do is lean into what is true. So maybe you've never seen yourself speak on stages and you've never seen yourself ask for a raise, or you've never seen yourself ask for what you want in your relationship right, but maybe you have seen yourself apply to a higher paying job, or you've seen yourself have a hard conversation with a friend. When it comes to faith, I find it really helpful to lean into the areas where you do actually have evidence. So, again, maybe you've never seen yourself speak on stages, but you've seen yourself have a hard conversation with your parent, and while your brain might be like what is the connection there? Speaking on stages in front of people is difficult, right. You have eyes on you and you don't know what people are thinking, and, similarly, when you're in a hard conversation with just one person. You have those eyes on you and you don't know how they're going to respond.

Speaker 2:

So, in the little ways, how can you give yourself evidence that what you're going after, that you've never done before, is actually so possible and available to you because you have X, y, z skills? This is where I feel we can very lovingly bridge the gap, because faith is fun, but it can be very hard and it can be very difficult when you're like I truly have my example. I've never been a model before, but I believe in my bones that I'm going to be, and so I looked back on my life. I'm like what evidence do I have? Well, I've done a lot of modeling. Quote on Instagram. Tyler's taking a lot of pictures of me as we've gone hiking and gone around the country and I do know how to pose. And growing up, I watched America's Next Top Model and I definitely practiced in the mirror. So I gave myself a lot of evidence of why I am the person to be picked for every, why I am a potential model, right, and that bolstered my faith.

Speaker 2:

So I want to break this out a little bit. I have an example. Let's say for you your dream is to be a professional dancer. And again, as always, my friends, I want you to maybe even pause the podcast right now and think about what it is that is actually true for you. What is your actual dream If it's not to be a professional dancer? Maybe it's to be an interior designer, maybe it's to be a partner at your firm, maybe it's to be a mom, maybe it's to be a kinder person. What is it for you? Right, so? But the example I'm working with is, let's say, you want to be a professional dancer.

Speaker 2:

Here's some of the thoughts that might come up as you are starting to go down this journey I can't make money being a dancer. I can't make money being a dancer. I want you to notice that both are usually in the body. So when I'm working with somebody and they're like, okay, naughty, I have this dream, I want to do this thing, we start to unpack it and usually both sides are in them. I feel really strongly that I could do this, I could be a professional dancer, and on the other side, there's this like really deep fear that I can't. That's what we call duplicity. We're not going to unpack that today, but I just want us to notice that Notice all of the thoughts that are inside your body, right?

Speaker 2:

So if you want to be a mom, if you want to be a dancer, write whatever it is at the top of your page. If you're driving, do this later. If you have a notebook near you, write it down. I want to be a dot dot dot. What I'm going through right now are all of the thoughts that might come up, and so what I want to offer for you is to write all of your actual thoughts that are coming up. So again, if I want to be a dancer, I can make money. I can't make money. This will be hard, this will be fun. I would have to move to a bigger city. Moving sounds scary.

Speaker 2:

Write down all of your thoughts about the thing that you want, because that's going to show you where your belief is. Do you believe that you can make money, being an answer, do you believe you can speak on stages? And what again might happen is that both might be in your body. I believe I can and I believe that I can't. From there, our job is to look at the parts of us that say that we can't and to rewrite those to reflect that we can, to bring all of our thoughts and energy in alignment with I can do the thing that I said that I wanted to do. I am going to do the thing that I said that I wanted to do, and here are all of my thoughts that are in alignment with the version of me who is doing the thing right. So that's why we do the thought work, that's why we look at our thoughts, because it really helps us to see where our faith is. Our thoughts help us to see where our faith is.

Speaker 2:

If our thoughts are in the bucket of I can't, it's too hard, it'll never happen. I want you to give yourself grace. This is not an exercise to beat yourself up. This is an exercise to see where you are and then, from that place of seeing where you are, with love and without judgment, deciding do I still want to think these thoughts and believe in this way? Are these thoughts and is this faith that I'm carrying around in alignment with the person that I say that I want to be Period? What are the thoughts and the soul set of the person who already has what I want? When I say soul set, I mean faith. I got that word recently. I'm listening to the 5am club, and that is one of the words that I pulled from it and I just I'm loving it so much I'm going to say that question again what are the thoughts and soul set of the person who already has what you want?

Speaker 2:

Your job is to think those thoughts ahead of time. The way that we do that again is get clear on what do you want, then write down all of the thoughts that you have about what you want. I can, I can't. I can because I can't, because I want to, but I'm afraid of dot dot dot. Look at all of the thoughts that are not serving you. Look at all the thoughts that are not in alignment with you getting what you want, and then we rewrite those. And so the part of you that says I can't make money being a dancer, you cross that line out because that is against the thought of I want to be a professional dancer. Right, the version of you who is a professional dancer makes money dancing period. Therefore, you cannot. I mean you can, but I would offer it was not serving you to carry around the thought I can't make money as a dancer. That thought needs to stop. It's not serving you. It is not making you go any faster on your pursuits. It is not helping you take action right. Our job here is to get rid of the thoughts that are impeding our ability to take aligned action.

Speaker 2:

Remember your thoughts are influencing your feelings. Your feelings are influencing your actions. Your actions are influencing your results. What are you thinking and feeling that's influencing the action you're taking? If you don't like the results that you're getting, go back to the top. What am I thinking? What am I feeling about the goal that I have? I want it, but I don't believe I can have it. I want it, but I mostly believe that I can have it. Right, I want it and I totally believe that I can have it, and I'm taking action towards it. Where are you on the spectrum? Wherever you are is perfectly okay.

Speaker 2:

Give yourself love and grace, because beating yourself up there is not the way, my friend. You can absolutely beat yourself up all the way to your goal, but what will happen when you get there? You will continue to do that because you have a pattern of beating yourself up until you get to the next level. You will continue that habit. That habit will not change all of a sudden because you hit your goal. Put in place the habits now that you want to continue to sustain you as you continue to grow Because as you hit the goal that you say you want to hit, we have what's called hedonic adaptation you will want a new goal. So, on your way to this goal, love yourself there. Speak to yourself with kindness. Don't beat yourself up to the goal, my friend, at least try your best not to, as always, take what sticks to you, leave the rest. I'll see you next week friend.
