Ever caught yourself thinking, "I'll be happy when..." or "I'll feel successful after..."? That mindset might be your biggest obstacle to creating the life you truly desire.

High-achieving women, especially those in leadership and entrepreneurship, excel at forward momentum. We're constantly planning the next project, chasing the next milestone, or strategizing our next evolution. While this drive serves us well, it often comes with a significant cost: we postpone our happiness and sense of accomplishment until some future achievement.

This episode challenges that pattern by exploring the neuroscience behind affirmations and success. When you tell yourself "I can't be successful until..." your brain dutifully gathers evidence to support that belief. But flip the script to "I am successful right now because..." and watch how your energy, motivation, and momentum transform.

Through the story of a client who successfully transitioned from fourth-grade teacher to Anthropologie artist, we examine how acknowledging your current skills and celebrating present wins creates the foundation for future growth. Rather than dismissing your current phase as merely a stepping stone, what if you recognized it as an essential part of your journey worthy of celebration?

The most powerful question you can ask isn't "What's next?" but rather "How am I already successful today?" and "What would my 16-year-old self be proud of?" These reflections reconnect you to your journey and remind you that you're already winning, even as you pursue bigger dreams.

Remember: You have everything you need to be successful as you define success right now. Give yourself more credit, queen. You're doing a fabulous job.

Hello, hello, hello, and welcome back to another episode of Believe Like a Boss. I am your host, life coach, nandi Camille. Welcome back. My friends, I hope you're doing so well. I hope you're having a beautiful week. I hope you're feeling productive and peaceful and fabulous, and if you're not, that's okay too.

Speaker 1:

This podcast is all about becoming your best self, mindfully noticing the thoughts and the action that we're taking or not taking. That is then attributing to how we're feeling and the action we're taking in the world. We focus a lot on or I focus a lot on betterment, on goal setting, on getting clear on what you want, on understanding the limiting beliefs that get in your way, and so we're very much about go, go, go, go go. And when I say we, I'm talking about myself and the hardworking, high achieving women in leadership, women in entrepreneurship that's what I'm referring to when I say we. So we, as boss, women are often slash, kind of always, because this is our personality type working towards the next thing. That next thing might be our beauty routine. That next thing might be the three new clients we want to sign. That next thing might be the breakup or the divorce or the starting of a new relationship. That next thing might be the meal planning that you're wanting to start doing. Right? But as high achieving women, as women in leadership, as women who are entrepreneurs, our minds work in a way that we are always like what's next, what's next, what's next, what's next? And so what I wanted to do with this episode is give us an opportunity to all just slow down. Give us all the opportunity to remember that, while our goals are incredibly important they're so important, and I never want to shame anybody for chasing their goals, for going after the goals, for attracting their goals. Whatever verbiage you want to use, because there's also debate around don't say chasing your goals, you attract your goals. I personally love 50-50. I believe that life is 50-50, right. Life is exciting and expansive. Life is also it's a little bit of both. That goes hand in hand with the manifestation, the co-creation, the journaling, the action right, the practical stuff, but also leaving room for God magic.

Speaker 1:

The point I'm trying to make with all of this is that, as these hardworking, high achieving women who are always going, sometimes we forget to slow down, sometimes we forget to celebrate ourselves, sometimes we forget to recognize all of the hard work we have done that has gotten us to where we are right now. So I want to use this podcast episode as a pause for you all. I hope that you are taking this time and my hope is that you take this time, this episode as I'm talking at you, to think about who am I today and what were the actions that I had to take, what were the thoughts that I had to think, what were the changes that I had to make in order for me to get to where I am today. Right now, I'm thinking about some of my clients, one of them this was a few years ago when I first met her. She was a teacher, I want to say a fourth grade teacher, and she recently I talked about her on the podcast got signed with Anthropologie as an artist, as a freelance artist, to work with them. And when we first started working together, there was a lot of frustration with her around I don't know where I'm going, I don't know who I am, I don't know if this is for me. And what we did is we worked on her thoughts about herself, her thoughts about the world, her thoughts about where she's going next, and we cleaned up those thoughts. Along with cleaning up those thoughts, we then cleaned up her action. What are you taking? What action are you taking or not taking to get you to being the freelance artist that you want to be, now that you've decided that you no longer want to be a fourth grade teacher, to be a fourth grade teacher? Before we could start doing any of the action for her to become this freelance artist that now works with anthropology, we had to pause and really celebrate the skills that she already had as a result of becoming a teacher. What are the skills that she put in place or that she had to actively use in order to become a teacher that were then going to help her become an entrepreneur?

Speaker 1:

When we're in this phase of in between, of I'm not quite where I want to be yet Again, we often will beat ourselves up until we get there. I can't be happy until I can't feel productive, until I'm not successful, until and this is the same thing for this client. So what we did is we worked on. What are the skills that have brought you to who you are right now? What are you proud of right now, before you even become a freelance artist? The point that I'm trying to make in this story is that I don't want you to put off your joy. I don't want you to put off feeling successful, right, I don't want you to wait until oh, I want to be a freelance artist for anthropology. I can't feel successful until then. I can't feel my best until then. And again, the point of this episode is to remind you that your job is actually to feel good ahead of time. It is your job to feel good ahead of time here's the neuroscience behind it when you are in a season that's not quite the season you want to be in. So we'll stick with this.

Speaker 1:

Example of her name is Stephanie. Stephanie, who is now a freelance artist, but was a fourth grade teacher at the time. Let's put yourself in her shoes. Or, if you are in your own in between right now, you stick with your own in between.

Speaker 1:

Had she continued to beat herself up for being a teacher or not being quote cool enough or whatever. It was all of that mind chatter, I'm not good enough, I can't do this, I can't be happy. Until all of that mind chatter slows us down. When you're focused on I can't, your brain will then go to find evidence for I can't because your brain is neutral. Generally speaking, your brain does not care one way or another. So if you keep saying to yourself I can't feel successful or I am not successful until your brain will say okay, and then we'll go to look for evidence that you are not successful yet, versus, if we can flip it around and you affirm I am successful, I might be a fourth grade teacher right now and I want to be a freelance artist, but it doesn't mean that I'm not successful until I become a freelance artist. I want you to, if you're in that space, again remind yourself let's bring it to your mind's eye what are all of the reasons you are successful right where you are today? What is the work that you had to put in in order to get to where you are today? What is the work that you had to put in in order to get to where you are today. What parts of your current life today would your 16-year-old self be really proud of? Right Working with this example, with this client, her 16-year-old self was so proud of her for showing up, for doing the work, for having a consistent job giving back to her community. While her 20-something year old self was ready to move on to her the next chapter, which was being a freelance artist, her 16 year old self was really proud of the work she had done to get her to where she was.

Speaker 1:

That day, when we're thinking the thoughts I am successful, I got this, it's all working out for me again, your brain goes to look for evidence of that right? So if you are not where you necessarily want to be, but affirm ahead of time I am successful, and then show yourself why you bring up your energy, you bring up your momentum. So many times when people are like I don't know how to get motivated, I'm not motivated. Today I don't feel motivated. Lots of thoughts about motivation. We could do a whole episode on that, but half of more than half of motivation is not this random spurt of all of a sudden I have energy to do things, but it's more so connecting to your why? Why are you working towards what it is you're working towards? Why did you work towards what it is you have gotten to today? So let's say again you were a fourth grade teacher. Why did you work towards that? Let's say that you have some other job that you don't necessarily want right now. Why are you in this job? What got you to being in this job and what skills are you in this job? What got you to being in this job and what skills are you actively using that you will still actively use in your next chapter.

Speaker 1:

Give yourself evidence that you are successful ahead of time. Right now, where you are, how are you already successful? How are you? Sometimes we do that I can't be happy until I won't be fully happy, until I have the person. I've signed the three clients. I've made $20,000 more. That's not serving you.

Speaker 1:

Stop putting your happiness off until a different day. I want you to bring your happiness in right now. Why? Why should you be happy today? I know some of you depending on where you are emotionally. For some of you, that is a legitimate question that you're asking. Why should I be happy today? What is there to be happy about? I want to honor that If you're there right now, I want to honor that. It is okay that you're upset, it is okay that you're frustrated, it is okay that you are feeling real sassy today, but I want you to see if you can flip the tone of that. What is there to be happy about today? Get curious about it. What might I get happy about today? Even if it's just the sunshine on your skin, even if it's just the breath in your lungs, even if it's just like you have that one pen that's your favorite pen and you get to write with your favorite pen.

Speaker 1:

Today, can you find one thing, one thing that makes you successful, that makes you happy today? Here's the thing. You get to decide what that is. You get to decide what makes you happy. You get to decide what makes you successful and check in. Are you allowing the opposite to happen, where, right now, you're telling, you're letting other people tell you what makes you happy. You're letting other people tell you what makes you successful? I want you to tell yourself what makes you happy. You're letting other people tell you what makes you successful. I want you to tell yourself what makes you happy today. I want you to tell yourself what makes you successful today, and then I would offer to get into a practice of this that, on a daily basis, you're connecting with that gratitude, you're connecting with why you are successful today. Don't put your success off, don't put your happiness off. You are worthy today.

Speaker 1:

You are successful today, and one of my favorite quotes I don't know who I got this from is you have everything you need to be successful as you see success right now. You have everything you need. You have every resource that you need, right? I don't want you to say to me like I don't have a business plan, I don't have an angel investor, I don't have a. To say to me, like I don't have a business plan, I don't have an angel investor, I don't have a supportive Instagram boyfriend. No, no, no. Those are excuses, my love. You have everything you need to be successful as you see success right now and today. And I'm going to add you are successful right now and today.

Speaker 1:

Here's the thing you picked up a personal development podcast. You are a successful human. If you chose to look after yourself and pick up a personal development podcast, you are a successful human. You're being self-aware, you're noticing what's working, what's not and therefore deciding what is next? What is next for you? How are you going to affirm your success today? How are you going to affirm your happiness today? Instead of waiting for your happiness, instead of waiting for motivation, instead of waiting to feel better, I want you to decide. Decide that you're going to be happy, Decide that you're going to be successful, and then tell yourself how and why. I'm going to take myself on a walk and I'm going to drink some water. That's how I'm going to be successful, and then name the ways that you already are.

Speaker 1:

I worked really hard to get this high level job. Maybe it's not the job I want to have anymore. I've gotten myself to an executive level and I don't necessarily want to wear this hat anymore, but I'm really proud of myself for the skills that I have worked, for the skills that I've learned, that have gotten me to where I am today. Give yourself some more credit. Please give yourself some more credit, queen. You are doing a fabulous job. As always, my friends, take what sticks to you, leave the rest. I'll see you next.
