LIVE DISCUSSION: 70 Weeks of Daniel - Reconciliation for Iniquity (PART 1 of 3)
The 70 Weeks of Daniel remains one of Scripture's most misunderstood prophecies, often twisted to support end-times theories that have no biblical basis. This eye-opening examination cuts through centuries of speculation to reveal the straightforward fulfillment that occurred at Christ's first coming.
Daniel's prophecy outlines six specific accomplishments: finishing transgression, ending sin, making reconciliation for iniquity, bringing everlasting righteousness, sealing prophecy, and anointing the Most Holy. Each element finds perfect fulfillment in Jesus Christ's ministry, death, and resurrection—no future fulfillment required.
We dive deep into Matthew 23 where Jesus himself connects the dots, telling the religious leaders they would "fill up the measure" of their fathers' guilt. This culmination of Israel's rebellion reached its terrible apex at Calvary, as 1 Thessalonians 2:15-16 confirms they "killed the Lord Jesus" to "fill up the measure of their sins."
The study confronts the popular but unbiblical notion of a future seven-year tribulation, challenging listeners to find even one verse explicitly mentioning such a concept. Instead, Scripture consistently points to Christ's first coming as the defining moment of human history to which all prophecy points.
Through examining passages in Hebrews, Isaiah, and throughout the Gospels, we discover how Jesus perfectly fulfilled every aspect of Daniel's prophecy. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us—not returning void but accomplishing exactly what God intended from before the foundation of the world.
Whether you've struggled with understanding prophecy or simply want deeper insight into God's redemptive timeline, this episode will strengthen your confidence in Scripture's cohesive message centered on Christ. verses 70 weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city. To finish the transgression, to make an end of sins, to make reconciliation for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and the prophecy and to anoint the most holy Verse 25,. Know, therefore, and understand that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until the Messiah, the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and 62 weeks. The street will be built again and the wall in troubleless times. To deal with some of the history here, daniel says that as he received this prophecy from Gabriel the angel, he says he understood his vision based on the prophecy that God had given Jeremiah. Now, the prophecy that God had given Jeremiah was that Israel was to submit to going into captivity with Babylon and that that captivity would last 70 years, 70 years. So the 70 years was a consecutive 70 years and what was interesting about Daniel's prophecy was that it would be 70 times 7 or 490 years, but what some may not know. I never want to presume on what people know or don't know, so I will assume that we don't know. Just for review for people who already know, there was a 70-year captivity whereby the Jews were told to submit to the captivity of Babylon that they would go into, and the Jews had a lot of problems with that, but, generally speaking, they were told it was going to happen, and it did. Now, after 70 years of being in captivity, daniel comes with a prophecy from the angel Gabriel and he says that there's going to be another 490 years, or 70 times 7, or 70 sevens, whereby the restoration in the building of Jerusalem unto the Messiah Prince would happen. Now here's the thing Daniel's prophecy would follow hard on the back end of the 70 year captivity that God gave to Jeremiah. In other words, when Jeremiah's captivity, the Babylonian captivity, ends, that captivity would end and it would begin with Daniel's prophecy. So there was a consecutive rollout of Daniel 70 times 7, or 490 years, which will fall hard on the end of the captivity. So, whereas they were in captivity before, under Nebuchadnezzar, now they would be released from that with the prophecy that Daniel has been given. And so, in short, daniel's prophecy and the timeline of his prophecy was back to back with Jeremiah's prophecy of the 70 year captivity.
Speaker 1:Prophecy of the 70 year captivity as I said previously in verse 24, there are six things that Daniel tells us that are going to be accomplished during the 70 weeks, and I'll say it one more time to finish the transgression, make an end of sins, make reconciliation for iniquity, bring in everlasting righteousness, seal up the vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. And by way of review, I said that these things have to be fulfilled for this prophecy to be a true prophecy. These are elements that must be fulfilled. The issue for the modern Christian today to consider is this have these things been fulfilled or not? This is the question. Have they been fulfilled or not? This is the big question.
Speaker 1:Now, before I begin, even though I know that we talked about this there may be a few people here that weren't here before, but my question is this is there anyone here in this panel or who's listening, with the ability to type in your comments? Is there anyone who believes that these six things listed in Daniel's 70-week prophecy? Is there anyone who believes they have not been fulfilled and, if so, explain? Can anybody say, or is willing to say, that these things have not been fulfilled? Or if you believe they have been, let's say that as well? So let me start by asking Greg in your mind, these six elements in Daniel 9 24, these things, which are laid out by Daniel to be fulfilled during his seven week prophecy. Have these things been fulfilled yet? Yeah, all right, brian.
Speaker 2:Yes, they have.
Speaker 1:Jen, do you have an opinion on this? Let me come back, William Keith. Are you have an opinion on this? Let me come back, William Keith. Are you there, brother?
Speaker 3:Sorry.
Speaker 4:I'm driving. I actually haven't read Daniel or Jeremiah's yet, so I don't want to chime in on this one. I'm just listening in for the info before I do read, but I haven't read either of those books as yet, all right, no problem, that's right.
Speaker 1:So Meg fulfilled or not fulfilled.
Speaker 4:After studying. They've been fulfilled. Lisa, do you have?
Speaker 2:a different opinion no Same as the rest Fulfilled.
Speaker 1:Fulfilled? I believe they've been fulfilled, but here's the problem. Here's the big problem. The problem is this Today we live in a very controversial situation period where people will say things and teach things that we have to if what we're saying is true, meaning a seven-year tribulation. Now, remember, there are those who have a dispensational eschatology, and that dispensational eschatology says that there is a seven year tribulation that's going to come in the future and it also says that that when that period of time happens, that there will not be any Christians here who will actually go through it.
Speaker 1:So my question is this do you see a way that these things in Daniel 9 24 can be fulfilled, and have there still be a seven-year tribulation to come in the future? And the reason why I'm asking this Is because this is the passage Right here. This is the passage that says by the, by the dispensational movement, that there is A there's one week left In Daniel's prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled. So my question is this Do we all understand the ramifications of saying that these six things have been fulfilled? Mitch, hey brother, how you doing?
Speaker 3:All right, my friend, how you doing, I'm doing all right.
Speaker 1:I enjoyed our little exchange earlier. I had a lot of fun, yes, sir. So let me ask you a question. Yes, sir, do you hold to the teaching of the seven year tribulation to be in the future? That's coming in the future?
Speaker 3:I'm going to be honest with you, bro. When he told Daniel to shut up the prophecy, I take that as whatever comes next will be revealed by the prophet, whoever that may be, so I can't speak on it. I'll be honest with you about that.
Speaker 1:All right, so fair enough. Does anybody believe let's listen here that there's a seven-year tribulation coming in the future? Anybody? All right, I feel the same way. Now here's what I will say For everyone listening. For everyone listening who is not on the panel. I'm open to hear what anyone has to say.
Speaker 1:If there is a seven-year tribulation taught in the Bible. Here's where I'm asking everyone listening to prove it. One verse of scripture anywhere that says and speaks to a seven-year tribulation, I want to hear it. One verse of scripture Anywhere that says and speaks to a seven year tribulation. I want to hear it Because this is where the dispensational movement Says it is and, as far as I can tell, in these passages there is nothing that mentions A seven year tribulation. There is nothing that a seven year tribulation, there is nothing that mentions the Antichrist, there is nothing that mentions another prophet, like our brother said, is coming to say or do whatever. None of that. So here's the part where I want to throw myself out there and say and invite everyone who is capable, willing or whatever to show it, to show it now. Otherwise, I'm going to be trying to prove and I'm going to prove that these, that these things have already been fulfilled at the first coming of our lord and savior, jesus christ, and it is important to understand that.
Speaker 1:I don't believe that there can be any prophecy in the scriptures that can somehow jump over the greatest event in human history, which was the coming of our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ, to die for the sins of his people and to be raised from the dead for their justification. There is nothing greater in human history than that, and I believe 100 percent that every biblical prophecy, from Genesis to Malachi, they all point to Christ, every single one, and Christ at his first coming. Now let's deal with finishing the transgression. I know we talked about that before but we didn't really get into the details. That before, but we didn't really get into the details. So the first of the six things that are supposed to be fulfilled in the 70 weeks of Daniel, the first one is to finish the transgressions. So in Matthew, does anybody there, meg, do you have your Bible with you?
Speaker 4:I have it, you know, I do.
Speaker 1:All right, well, lisa, I'll let you go ahead. So, lisa, turn to Matthew 23 and read verse 32.
Speaker 2:Okay, 23, verse 32. Yeah, matthew, fill up then measure. Fill up then the measure of your fathers.
Speaker 1:Of your fathers. What else is it?
Speaker 2:It just stops there in mind.
Speaker 1:Yeah, what is saying is your father.
Speaker 2:You, brood of vipers. How do you, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell, Right? So what? So what's what it's saying? Is your father?
Speaker 1:You, brood of vipers how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? Right? So what's happening here is Christ is saying, and what he's saying is fill up, then the measure of your father's guilt, or filling up the iniquity, fill up your iniquity. And so what is happening is here it says that in this, in this prophecy of Daniel, the first thing that it says that is going to be fulfilled is finishing the transgression. In other words, they are going to go as far as they can, as far as they can, and so my question now is to Brian is this what is it that fills up the transgression that is spoken of by Daniel in your mind?
Speaker 2:Literally killing the Messiah, amen, amen, literally killing the Messiah, amen. They had been fighting against God all this time and that was the ultimate end to it. There's nothing worse than that, than the Messiah that you've been waiting for all these years, all these years, shows up and he's looking you right in the face and you literally tell Pilate crucify, right.
Speaker 4:And we can find that in Zechariah, chapter 12, verse 10 through 12.
Speaker 1:I like it.
Speaker 4:Read it it says, and I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and supplication. Then they will look on me, whom they pierce. Yes, they will mourn for him as one mourns for his only son and grieve for him as one grieves for a firstborn. In that day there shall be a great morning in Jerusalem, like the morning of Hadad Ramon in the plain of Medigedo, and the land shall mourn, every family by itself the family of the house of David by itself and their wives by themselves. The family of the house of Nathan by itself and their wives by themselves.
Speaker 1:Amen, do me a favor, meg. Turn to 1 Thessalonians, chapter 2. We're talking about filling up the transgression. To finish the transgression, my brother Brian nailed it. He nailed it. But I want to give some verses to reinforce what we're talking about, because I never want to be accused by anybody of saying I didn't provide scripture. So are you there, meg? Yeah, read 1 Corinthians, chapter 2. Oh, 1 Corinthians. I mean, I'm sorry. Sorry, 1 Thessalonians, 1 Thessalonians. Are you there? Sorry, first Thessalonians, first Thessalonians, are you?
Speaker 4:there Yep First Thessalonians, chapter 2.
Speaker 1:Yeah, read verse 15 and 16.
Speaker 4:Alright. It says who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and have persecuted us, and they do not please God and are contrary to all men forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved so as always, to fill up the measure of their sins, but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost. That makes sense. Hallelujah? Yes, because that was Israel's conversion right. So I got to read my notes real quick because I got to see what it and what it's saying is to finish, the transgression is Israel's course of disobedience that ended in repentance transgression is israel's course of disobedience that ended in repentance.
Speaker 1:No, no, the transgression ended, like my brother brian says, in crucifying the lord of glory. Yes, all right. So he says what nobody says in verse 15. They killed the lord jesus and their own prophets and persecuted the apostles, and they pleased not God and are contrary to all men. And they forbid us to speak. They forbid the apostles to speak to the Gentiles so that they too might be saved, and they did this to fill up their sin always, for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.
Speaker 1:So can anyone say, upon reading this, that this is not speaking about finishing the transgression? We even have the parables where Christ talks about I sent you the prophets, I sent you the messengers, I sent you the priests, I sent you the law, I sent you all these things and you still disobeyed. So he says and he's terrible. So I know what I'll do. I'm going to send who, our Messiah? I'm going to send my Our Messiah. I'm going to send my son. Yeah, and he says surely they won't do to my son what they did to the prophets, am I right? You're right. Does anybody disagree? If you disagree, light, light it up. Okay, so now notice this. In Daniel 9, 24, it says that 70 weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city. So, greg, who are we talking about and what city are we talking about?
Speaker 3:So the holy people would be you know, the people under excuse me in the Mosaic covenant. At that time, the holy city would be Jerusalem.
Speaker 1:Right, so we're talking about the nation of Israel and Jerusalem. Yeah, right, so we're talking about. We're talking about the nation of Israel in Jerusalem and we're talking about Jerusalem. So this, so this prophecy, is specifically dealing with them in that old covenant establishment. Now here's something that's interesting. So Meg turn to Matthew, chapter 23. Matthew 23. Keep in mind, everybody, that we're talking about the nation of Israel and the holy city, jerusalem.
Speaker 4:Are you there, Meg Yep what verse Meg Yep.
Speaker 1:What verse brother Read verse 36. Okay.
Speaker 4:As surely I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
Speaker 1:All these things shall come upon that generation. Now go back to verse 33 and read it down through 36 again. And matthew yeah, matthew.
Speaker 4:23, 33-36 serpents brought a vipers. How can you escape the condemnation of hell? Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men and scribes. Some of them you will unalive and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city. That on you may come all righteousness, bloodshed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Barak, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
Speaker 1:Does everybody see the theme here? Does everybody understand the theme that's going on here here? Does everybody understand the theme that's going on here? What Christ is saying is that you have done all these things, in spite of all that my father has done for you. He gave you the prophets, he gave you the wise men, he gave you the scribes, he gave you the decalogue, or the law, he gave you the ceremonial law, he gave you the sacrificial system, he gave you this knowledge about him, he gave you his theocratic rule where you could go to him and you asked for a king, and I gave you that king. In spite of all these things that my father, christ, says, has given you, he decided that surely when he sends me, you will respond in kind.
Speaker 1:But that is not what happened, and Christ knew that was not going to happen, because Christ came here to lay down his life of his own accord. The transgression amounts to the most grievous and the most terrible of any act that the hands of men can do, which was to lay hands on the Lord of glory and send him to that cross. There is no greater guilt that can be laid upon any people than to be responsible for the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior, jesus Christ. To look at this scenario and put the blame on the nation of Israel only. We would be amiss if we did not see ourselves as a participant in the guilt that they have. We are no different than they are because we are sinners just as they are. All of mankind is responsible for putting our Lord on the cross, and if you ask me how I know, it's because my sin was on him as well, just like your sin, if you are a believer, was on him as well. Just like your sin, if you are a believer, was on him as well.
Speaker 4:Can I read a verse in regards to that, brother Jonathan, please? Do All right, we're going to go to 1 Corinthians 2, and we're going to go to verse 8.
Speaker 3:Verse eight Hmm.
Speaker 4:It says we're going to start at seven. It says but we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages of our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew, for had they have?
Speaker 1:known they would have not crucified the lord of glory, amen. Read the next verse keep going.
Speaker 4:Read the next verse. But as it is written, eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of a man the things which god has prepared for those.
Speaker 1:Amen, when the Lord himself was crucified at Calvary, at the hands of the Jews and at the hands of the Romans, and at our hands as well.
Speaker 1:We are all guilty, which is why all of us should come to, should turn to Christ, why all of us should come to turn to Christ. Every man, every man who is willing should turn to Christ and be saved. Now I want to point out I think it's in Hebrews, let me see, I got the Bible here Hebrews 9 and verse 26 to put a finer point on this. It says here that Christ, in verse 24, hebrews 9 Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands which are copies of the truth, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. Not that he should offer himself often, as the high priest enters the most holy place every year with blood of another, but verse 26, he then would have, would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world, but now, once, at the end of the ages, he has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Speaker 4:Amen. Can I back you up with one more verse, brother Jonathan? Absolutely, all right. Let's go to Isaiah, chapter 53, 53. We're going to start at verse 10. Man, the holy spirit's moved me through this book. I don't even have nothing in front of me but a bible I love it, it says.
Speaker 4:Yet it pleased the lord to bruise him. He has put him to grief. When you make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see the labor of his soul and be satisfied by his knowledge. My righteous servant shall justify many, for he shall bear their inequities. Man.
Speaker 1:And see, I love that. And anybody who wants to throw out some verses from scripture, I'm all for it. I'm never going to say no when somebody brings up some scriptures they want to show.
Speaker 2:Well, Brother John, can I just give like a little bit of commentary with all the verses that y'all are reading? Absolutely.
Speaker 1:You do it, brother.
Speaker 2:This is why this is so important the when you read the verse in matthew 23 where it talked about, you know this transition started with abel, right? That's why we really need to really grab hold of this. What it is is the law. It doesn't say it's the shadow, but Jesus is the spoke, he's the logos, he is the word right.
Speaker 2:So the word came at the end. What all of us me, you, the Pharisees, like you said, the Romans what we all do is we worship the letter, because that is works. It's trying to keep the letter right. Jesus came the whole sermon on the Mount. What he was actually trying to keep the letter Right. Jesus came the whole sermon on the Mount, what he was actually trying to tell them. This is the true spirit of what the word is. That's why he said I came at the end, I'm going to show you exactly what the word is in the flesh. Yep, and that's why it's the perfect sacrifice, because he is the shadow of what we think we're worshiping in the letter. And he said okay, I'm going to come in the flesh and die to that that you're worshiping, so you can have the Holy Spirit to understand what the true law is Absolutely, and even to add to that, you're getting me going in here.
Speaker 4:I'm running hot. So even to that, brother Brian, when the Lord said that his word will not go out and return void, it is that it is Jesus Christ, who was the word, who did not go out and return void, who did go out and do exactly as he said he would.
Speaker 1:Now let me ask you. Let me ask you a question, Meg, and everybody here, because she makes a good point. God says in Isaiah that his word shall not return to him void shall not return to him void, void. He shall not return to him void. So the general understanding is that when his word goes out, the effect that it produces is salvation, and so when people are saved, his word is not returned to him void. However, what do we say about the situation where his word
