LIVE DISCUSSION: Idolatry & Sorcery (PART 5 of 5)
Have you ever noticed how the most profound spiritual truths are often communicated in the simplest language? This powerful conversation examines why clarity and simplicity in Christian teaching matter deeply, drawing inspiration from how Jesus himself communicated complex ideas through straightforward language and parables.
We dive into the temptation many Christians face to use impressive theological terminology rather than clear, accessible language that reaches everyone. As one participant notes, "I know the urge and desire and vanity and pride and arrogance in wanting to sound lofty and deep and heavy, but we need to speak in simple terms so that everyone can understand."
The discussion explores three categories of sins from Galatians 5: sensual sins, religious sins (like idolatry and witchcraft), and social sins that create division and disunity. We examine how these manifest in modern contexts and why they're so destructive to both individual spiritual growth and community cohesion.
Perhaps most thought-provoking is the exploration of Christ as the ultimate "disruptor" - challenging our comfortable assumptions and natural ways of thinking. While businesses today pride themselves on being disruptive forces in their industries, many resist the divine disruption that Christ brings to our lives and thinking.
The conversation concludes with powerful encouragement for believers facing difficult decisions: "You can never see a miracle of God unless you go where a miracle is required." This reminder that faith often means stepping into uncomfortable situations where divine intervention becomes necessary offers both challenge and comfort to listeners at any stage in their spiritual journey.
Join us for this authentic, unfiltered conversation about speaking truth plainly, disrupting comfortable assumptions, and stepping out in faith when God calls. How might your communication of spiritual truths change if you focused more on clarity than complexity?

I'll tell you now, but I'm going to say it anyway. The reason why you and I talk that way is because we've been in. You talk like a military man. You and I have been men under orders and you need to be, you need to enunciate, you need to be clear.
Speaker 1:I've been told I talk too loud and my defense was I took care of old people. They couldn't hear. Well, I rarely had a patient old people they couldn't hear. Well, I rarely had a patient told me they couldn't hear what I was saying, I guess because I talked so loud. But the thing is I I could actually give a sermon in church, probably without a mic.
Speaker 1:But uh, the uh. That's why you talk that way. You're direct, you're to the point, you don't wait. You know you don't talk any, any, uh, any bull hockey, right, you know I mean that's what I don't wait. You know you don't talk any, any, any bull hockey, right? You know I mean that's what I respect about you, that you know that I've found about you know you want to. You want to train a young man? Right, send him to basic training. When he comes back home he's a different man and you know that's what I like about you. I'm not going to. I'm not going to sit here and say I love it. I analyze it. You are who you are. It's like a rabbit telling the lion he needs to change the way he roars. You're right, we are who we are.
Speaker 2:One thing that I learned a lot about from reading Spurgeon and there's not much left of his that I haven't read other than this, his three volumes on on a psalm, one on the book of psalms. But one thing that spurs you, really emphasize, for preachers and people who speak on god's behalf to always speak in the simplest language, always speak in the simplest possible way to communicate to the largest body, you know, of hearers. You know there are many of us who can speak way above you know. You know way into the college level type of speaking. I can do that. But he emphasized and you read a lot of these old theologians. They were all experts on taking these lofty themes from the word of God, these theological themes, and to break them down into the lowest common denominator so that every man can understand it. That's how Christ spoke. That's how Christ spoke. That's how he spoke Very simple ways.
Speaker 2:And so a lot of people like I witness a lot of these people. They come on these lives and I hear one guy talking about philosophy and all these kind of things. And you know other people, you know you can tell when people learn new words because they start throwing them out there in repetition. Eisegesis is a big one. It's like people just learn the word eisegesis and exegesis and hermeneutics and this, and that I can talk like this. But people need to understand things in clear terms. I know the urge and the desire and the vanity and the pride and arrogance and wanting to sound lofty and deep and heavy, but we need to speak in simple terms so that everyone can understand. Make the gospel open and accessible. Make Christ open and accessible to everyone. You don't have to be deep, you just have to be telling the truth and that's it. And so, like Brother Jeff can tell you, when you get older, you learn these things. When you're younger, you focus on trying to make impressions, and so when you get older, you learn these things. When you're younger, you want to be focused on trying to make impressions. And so when you go through all these lives that I see, when I when I'll do some of my scrolling sometimes and I see all these people on. That's why I never go into them, because they're not interesting, they're boring. It's a bunch of people trying to talk deep and heavy and they're not. I rarely find one that is. And so, like Lisa said, they argue and they're bickering, which is an indication of immaturity, which is an indication of immaturity and, in fact, because today we only got through and I'm glad we did, we got through idolatry and witchcraft, but the next series of works of the flesh that we get into, starting tomorrow or the next day because I may do something different tomorrow, but if I don't, then I'll pick up where we left off today.
Speaker 2:But this is going to talk about. So the first group were sensual sins. Today we talked about religious sins. Tomorrow we're going to talk about social sins Social sins. This might hurt a little bit, because I'm going to. I got to talk about it. We're going to talk about social sins. What?
Speaker 3:is it what is social sin?
Speaker 2:Sins that are involved with breaking down the mechanics of society.
Speaker 3:Can you give me just one, so I can have an understanding?
Speaker 2:Hatred. So he says hatred, variance, variance, emulations, which is? Jealousies, fearfulness, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, these are all things that these are all things that do two things. They break up two different social. They disrupt these sins, deal with disruption, they deal with destroying and dividing, they deal with breaking, with imposing or trying to enforce or implement disunity. That's what these things are going to be talking about.
Speaker 2:And so and the reason why I feel this is going to hurt for a lot of people is because of what's going on in our own landscape, in this world, especially here in America. You know, right now, when people talk about building new businesses or seeking to build new businesses, especially in the software world, which is kind of where I came from, people think that it's a good thing because they talk about their product. One of the words that they use is this product is going to disrupt, it's going to disrupt, it's going to disrupt. But you know what, brethren? There has been no greater disruptor than the Lord Jesus Christ himself, no greater disruptor. His word is the disruptor. His truth disrupts, his spirit disrupts the father, disrupts everything we know about benevolence, in that he chose to elect certain individuals to salvation, to the exclusion of others, and he has every right to do so. That doesn't make sense to the natural mind. It's disruptive, disruptive. But see, we are taught and groomed today to believe that being a disruptor should be essential to your business model. But men don't like it when it comes to being to God and Christ, disrupting. When it comes to spirituality and men, they spend all their time fighting, bickering, starting wars, partyism.
Speaker 2:So this whole thing devised, paul dealt with this with the Corinthian church, remember, some of those guys were following certain speakers, certain people, and they like Apollos, and some like Paul and some like Peter and whatever, and so they created these factions. Today, in church, church society, we have I don't know how many, I don't know 20, 30,000 denominations Factionism. This is what we're going to talk about in the next one. So I'm going to close right now and, like brother Nathan says, jesus pleaded for unity. This is true. And um, I'm gonna close right now and we'll pick this up tomorrow and I'll give you guys, uh, the, the, the five of you that are still here, the last words for tonight. Candy, I'll start with you, since you got something you want to read, so this will be your last word. You go with it.
Speaker 4:It's actually over what we're talking about in Galatians 5. So I got a new Bible today, so I'm excited of how it lays things out for me. It's really nice. Galatians 5, 16 through 22 he says lust. So how can we avoid being ruled by lustful living?
Speaker 4:He says of God inside are able to choose godly actions and reactions. They are not ruled by their feelings but by the Holy Spirit. But God's Spirit will never force a believer to do anything. It's always a choice, a decision to do the right thing. So scripture tells us that the Spirit will bring us love, joy, peace, long-suffering, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, the ability to tell yourself no. Each one of these traits is available to us because they are given to us by the Holy Spirit. But just like you will never know the taste of a fresh-picked apple unless you take it off the tree and eat it, you will never know all the wonderful fruit that can be in your life unless you decide to give it a try. So, like the bible says in psalms 34, 8, taste and see that.
Speaker 4:taste and see that the lord is good amen sister what I wanted to read, because it went very well with everything tonight. So, jonathan, don't change who you are unless the Holy Spirit changes you from within. I don't think I can, I'm not worried about what this world thinks, because the world is corrupt. They don't know, you, yep.
Speaker 2:No, they don't. I mean, that was particularly striking because of who it came from and it just bothered me. So I was like what's the point of that, you know? But anyway, don't worry, sister, I got no choice. I'm an old dog and I'm not even thinking about learning new tricks.
Speaker 4:I told you, it's just that flesh that is old. It is not the man inside. That's true, we are not old, we are babes, but we're mature babes, but we're still children.
Speaker 2:That's right, Sister Meg last word.
Speaker 3:Well, I just read that Abraham was 99 years old when he was circumcised.
Speaker 2:Yep that had to hurt.
Speaker 3:I just went in the living room and told my husband I was like man 99? Hey, one thing I did want to ask, though, because I was reading this. What does it mean? How old was he when he died, though? I don't know. Lathan asked how old was he when he unalived Abraham?
Speaker 2:I forgot how old he was.
Speaker 3:I don't remember. I have to look. He keeps on asking me that. But um, when? What does it mean? In um genesis, when they were saying um, like in verse 12, in chapter 17, it says and he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house or bought with money of any. What does that mean? Because I've seen it more than once. It says what are they talking about?
Speaker 2:I'm not sure what's the question again. It's in Genesis 17 too, and I see it all over the place, especially here um I'll take a look at it and see, because I can't think off the top of my head, but I'll take a look at it and see. Is that your last word?
Speaker 3:yeah, I'm sitting here just reading scripture while we're doing all this, but, um, yeah, it's, yeah, be a student of the words. You know, once the book starts opening up, it's like a box of Pringles Once you pop, you can't stop and it's wonderful and it allows you. You have that blessing too, jonathan, and I feel that the Lord has gifted me with that glory to God, that to where, when we talk, you can just explain stuff to, where people understand it and see. The goal is is to get others to get hungry and thirsty for the word of God to go in, and, if they do nothing else, to go in. And don't believe me, don't believe Jonathan. Go back in the word and search these things out yourself, because this is the beauty of scripture and you know the Lord's going to talk to you, not that he's going to tell you something different, but that he's going to reveal things to you in a different way. And it's just so beautiful Like I can't get enough of it. I love it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's, that's, that's my whole thing. I want to. I've said this before. That's why I say provoke to persuade, because even as much as I want to persuade people to believe the things that I say because I don't believe that what I'm saying is wrong, unless I'm throwing it out there as something that I don't know for sure, and I'll say that. But, generally speaking, none of us go out there and just say things that we think is an out and out lie. But so I want people to challenge what's being said, and I want to encourage people to go examine the scriptures and check it out. That's the whole idea. And one more thing I know what happens when the truth lays hold of people. It sets a fire that can't stop, and so I want people to try to get excited about it again, because you have a lot of people where this gospel is preached today. I don't even recognize it. This gospel today, I don't even recognize it.
Speaker 3:I just want to tell you know, everybody does these things about how to read your Bible in a year. I would encourage the body of Christ to slow down a little bit. This book that we read is not a race. It's not about how many times you can get through it. It's about slowing down and let the word of God speak to you. There's no rush. There's nobody that you're in a race with. I mean, slow down and and allow the word to speak to you. So many people want to rush through it. Oh, I've read the bible this many times, you know, just to have to brag. But slow down and read the word of god. Uh, you get so much more.
Speaker 2:Trust me no problem, mariah, go ahead. Go ahead, sister Mariah.
Speaker 5:Last word bit deeper to identify these things that may be overlooked and not really talked about so often, and I think it's a good reflection. It reminds me of when Paul is saying you know no thief, no idolater, no anything you know liar will enter or inherit the kingdom of God, and such were some of you, you know. But glory be to God that we are no longer those things and that we have been called out, and I would just encourage anybody to seek the Lord today, while it is today, for the day today is the day of salvation. Amen and um.
Speaker 5:You know, trust and believe in him, and all these other things in the world shall be added onto you, if it be his will and if you guys all can just keep my children in prayer, because for whatever reason they're getting sick again and I don't know what's going on. But if you may just say a little prayer in your heart for them I will I love you guys I will love you too, sister.
Speaker 2:Appreciate you. Last word, brother, jeff, man of god give us something?
Speaker 1:yeah, you wouldn't do that. Just, I took a mouth of Rice Krispie treat. So yeah, you know, I have myself a bedtime snack before I hit it. Well, what I was going to say was that fellow that was in here, too bad, he's gone. I think he's gone because he hasn't posted anything yet. No-transcript. I said, you know, quit nitpicking, cherry-picking the scriptures to try to, you know, get a rise out of us. I mean, you know it's not going to work. I mean, obviously you're not saved. Either that or you're just weird.
Speaker 2:I didn't see it.
Speaker 1:I wasn't trying to chase him out. I was just saying you know what's he talking about. I kept talking. You were talking bull hockey and I'm thinking well, who does it once in a while? What does that mean? What does that mean? One thing I never caught you doing is bloviate. You never bloviate, but uh, yeah, well, unfortunately. Uh, you know, I am a grammarian so I occasionally bloviate. I used to love that. I love that word. That just means to blow off crap. Yes, yep the words. You're full of beans. It's bloviated.
Speaker 3:What's that? I would say. The word of the day is bloviate my brother Jeff.
Speaker 1:Bloviate. That's right, but I'm sorry I got a mouthful, but anyway you know, I really appreciate the study and I'm sorry, Kanan, that it was the same time buddy, but actually, Jonathan, I was looking through it because I always have to do that. I was looking through it, all of a sudden it's there it's coming.
Speaker 2:You know what it is. No, you know what it is, kanan. Sorry about that. You know what it is. It's weird because I don't know if you know about, my main profile is down. Tiktok is supposed to be trying to work on it and they're telling me it's going to take up to 30 days, and I don't even believe it's going to happen, but I hope it does. But in the meantime I'm using my wife's profile. So what I have to do is I have to go over there On this one here. I have to set up the live calendar, send the calendar to my other Bible provocateur site, then share it from there and then come back here to go live. So it's a pain, it's a pain.
Speaker 2:It's a pain, so I'm hoping that it won't last long, but I will. So, canaan, if you can hear me, brother. So I have two profiles. One says the Bible provocateur. That one is the one that's down. I have another one that is Bible provocateur, without the the. If you go there and click a follow there, then I'll add you to that list and make sure you get that you get the updates when I go live tomorrow and going forward.
Speaker 6:Yeah, that was my issue, Because I followed it, but I didn't get the or see the notification, because I watched some of your posts earlier today but I didn't see, what I usually do. And so then I was like oh, I didn't even know you were going to be going live at that time. So I had made prior arrangements, unfortunately, because I thought you weren't going live today, oh yeah, so we'll see. But it's a blessing either way, you know, and and that's what it comes down to is getting into god's word and fellowshipping.
Speaker 1:So well, see, that's the thing, canaan. I mean, at the same time it's like lisa and I were talking last night she said I should start doing a live and I'm saying, yeah, but I don't want to do the same time as Jonathan, then I'll miss it. I mean, you know. I mean maybe, maybe she thinks, like I know, she thinks I've got something worth saying. God bless you forever, my sister. But the thing is, you know, I support, I mean, I would much rather not do that than than miss yours. And I was thinking, well, what would I do and when would I do it.
Speaker 7:But we got to all coordinate time so I'm free all day.
Speaker 1:So well, that's just it. If you can't come to mine, I won't do it.
Speaker 7:Well, I'm free all day, I can come to all of y'all's Well, good, Well.
Speaker 1:Anyway, you know I mean anyway, you know, I mean I'm praying about it, I'm going to need some guidance. I don't really know what to do. I mean I know how to make comments. Oh, and I wanted to make a comment about that circumcision thing that Meg brought up. I believe the Bible is very clear on how you read it and you should take the reading as it literally is, as it literally is, and basically what that is is he's saying that anybody you buy with money, which means a slave, that he's bought in his household. If you want to know how slaves were treated by the Jews, watch Ben-Hur, the one with Charlton Heston, great movie. Yeah, it's a great movie. They were considered part of the family and because they were considered part of the family, god said well then you've got to circumcise them.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they're going to be circumcised too.
Speaker 1:And foreigners could come, could eat of the Passover if they were circumcised.
Speaker 3:Right, but weren't slaves also in the like? I think I get so upset when people compare slavery to what was in the Bible.
Speaker 2:That's not even close?
Speaker 3:It's not even close at all. But wasn't the slavery here was, let's say, that they were indebted? Then they would be slaves to them for that, and then after the seven years or whatever it was, they would let them go right.
Speaker 1:But that was in Leviticus. This is pre-law.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:This is pre-law. Yeah, this is pre-law.
Speaker 2:Yeah, this is prior to the law. This is prior to the ceremonial law.
Speaker 1:But basically, yeah, you're right. I mean what they're talking about now. At Abraham's time this was before the law these are people that he would go to the city and they'd have people for sale and he'd buy them. You know, I mean in the time you're talking about Meg, I mean, yeah, if you were in debt you could sell yourself to a master, but he didn't actually, you know, he would pay your debts and you'd be his slave. But essentially it's the same thing, except they were released at seven years. But God said you know, if they're going to be part of your household and they're males, they have to be circumcised. I mean, they've got to be sitting there eating the meals with you, taking the Passover with you. You've got to be circumcised. Of course, passover wasn't for several hundred years, but you know, anyway, that's my idea. I'm not saying that's the definitive idea, I'm just saying scripture should be read as it is. You know, as you know, yep, all right, and you know what.
Speaker 2:I love all you guys. Thanks, this is at least the last word.
Speaker 7:Oh, I'm just. I'm grateful again for this live. Um. I love the um subject matter because you know, these are things we have to think of today and, just like you're not going to hear um on the pulpit about sorcery and idolatry in the way that we're speaking of it today, you might get a softer version and it needs to be discussed truthfully and the way God meant it to be, and so many people don't want to hear these things, they don't want to let go of certain things, and so this is what I'm grateful for and, honestly, I was in Pockets live last night for the first time and I was so impressed and grateful. He does his live very much, much. He conducts it the way you do, jonathan. Um, it's very orderly. It was um, it we were learning.
Speaker 2:I'm about to find out about. I'm about to find out. I'm at the cane. You got to tell me about this brother oh, he's got it.
Speaker 7:He's got a 50, is it? What is it, Kanan? It's a long study. What did you say? 52 weeks of studying Genesis, and this is, I mean, how exciting to get in depth about the promise to Abraham and the fact that Abraham was saved by grace through faith, and it's but to go so deep. I think that's beautiful.
Speaker 7:These other lives I just hear arguing back and forth no, you're wrong, You're wrong this and this, and it's just not. It's not edifying whatsoever. I can't. I've tried to sit and listen to a few and I just I can't do it because it's. It just seems like one wants to prove this point, One wants to prove the other point, and we know the truth in this group here, I believe all of us and it doesn't do us any good to try to go and argue with people who haven't got the eyes to see, at least at this point. I mean, Kanan, I'm just going to sing your praises tonight because I was so impressed. There was a kid in his comments talking a bunch of smack, and Kanan stopped everything and said hey, you guys, this guy is, he's young and he's new and he's you know, let's show him some grace here and just let's not, it was just awesome.
Speaker 2:That sounds like. That sounds like Kanan, though that sounds like him. He is, he has that. I was so impressed and I'm man I was impressed by that he's got a good temperament about him and so, yeah, pocket cane, I'm going to be there, I'm going to check you out, sister Tina. Last word, I know we talked to you a little bit earlier today, but if you got something you want to say, go ahead as we close up.
Speaker 8:I just want to say thank you for this live. It was a great topic. I am one to be shy, to speak about anything really Okay, but I feel very comfortable and, you know, have a lot of trust for this group, this live, my family.
Speaker 8:I'm blessed to meet everybody on here and just the insight and the light that I think I needed it here today for decisions that I've been stuck on for a while, just going back and forth really about things, cause I also like I I bring things up as well that I feel like that is not of god, or you know godly ways as well, like, especially in my relationship a lot, and I'm just always told like I'm not his mother and for me it's just the I, just I want, I crave for you know to live righteous and in every way, yeah.
Speaker 2:so I'm just blessed to be here and I thank you all for your love and support we're blessed to have you, and you know we're blessed to have you, and I hope you continue to come back, and you know you should. You know I'm going to encourage everyone here to follow you and stay in touch with you and just give you some words of encouragement from time to time, and you should follow all of us here too. And then, like I said, you know you don't want to be out there alone and I'm not the kind of person that likes to say just be warmed and be filled. You know what I mean. If I can help in any kind of way, I want to do that. Even if you just want to ask where a certain verse in the Bible is, you know I don't care Whatever it is. You know I try to be there for the brothers and sisters in Christ.
Speaker 2:I'm sure everyone else here shares that sentiment. I'm just hearing about my brother right. He's on the screen, pocket full of ramen. His name is Cain and follow him too, because apparently he's teaching some things too. My suspicion is that they're pretty good and I'm getting that confirmation here.
Speaker 3:anyway, hey, tina, can I tell you one thing I just keep. I've been all night, so I have to say it Step out in faith and stand. That's all I'm going to tell you to do. Step out in faith and stand. God is calling you out of this boat, sister. I'm telling you, and you're going to have to stand. God is calling you out of this boat, sister, I'm telling you, and you're going to have to stand. And it's going to be wonderful, you're going to see.
Speaker 2:I love you, sister, and I'm here if you need me.
Speaker 2:You know, the thing is sometimes we know things, we know what we want to do and what we should do, and we're afraid of being out there not knowing how it's going to turn out or work out. But, god, I can tell you you will never be left alone. You can never see a miracle of God unless you go where a miracle is required. That's just a fact. Anybody can play it safe, but when it comes to God's people, we don't need to play it safe Because, as we talked about earlier, we need to depend on him. He will carry us through.
Speaker 2:My sister, angie, is on here. She's somebody that, from her current circumstances, she can tell you, you know, but we've all been there. We've all been there, and I say this over and over and over again being a Christian, a Christian, is the most difficult thing you could ever be, but it's also the most rewarding thing that you could ever have, because the rewards are eternal and they're with and they're with the Lord, and we talked about idolatry, and they're with the Lord. And we talked about idolatry and witchcraft and sorcery. Really, what these things are are trying to seek out for secret power through means that the Lord has not prescribed, is not prescribed. Don't try to seek anything or try to find any kind of secret power or gifts or blessings outside of God that come by way of means that are forbidden by God. That's what that's all about. Christ alone. Brother Canaan says it just right. Christ alone. So, brother Canaan says it just right, christ alone. So, brother Canaan, you have the last word for tonight and we will wrap it up until tomorrow.
Speaker 6:I just want to say I always appreciate your lives and I am sad that I missed it. I always enjoy the fellowship and the different perspectives that everyone brings to the table. I just want to end with Genesis 17.1 and a quick thought. I am God Almighty, walk before me and be blameless, and then, secondly, with the subject at hand that you're talking about. We need to constantly be analyzing everything in our lives. I recently attended a movie with some family of mine and it was disturbing because it attempted to glorify multiple different means of um unaliving Right and and to manipulate and to distort what happens when we are no longer alive.
Speaker 5:Right.
Speaker 6:And the reality of when you're watching the these things is completely different when you have the Bible as your lens and you view things differently and you are uncomfortable because you know that that is not reality. But it is an illusion, it is a, a fake, it is a false or a fraud, and so it really bothered me that it was just such a blatant lie against god and what his word says, and so when you talk about that, I think the enemy continues to use everything, even if it's a small movie that you go out with your family to hopefully relax and enjoy. But if you're sensitive to these things, you can't miss them, you can't just sit by and ignore it. So God's word convicts and your uh lies provoke and you've got me thinking all the time when I'm seeing your lives and when I'm watching your posts. So thank you.
Speaker 1:I would like to pray out loud for everyone before we leave. All right, let me just say one more thing to Canaan first, so Canaan um, I would like to pray out loud for everyone before we leave.
Speaker 2:All right, let me just say one more thing to Kanan first. So, kanan, um, do you, do you, um, put your lives up on a calendar, the live event calendar.
Speaker 6:No, but now that I'm aware of it I'm still fairly new to all that Um, I'm going to probably start doing that, but, but I'm also gonna be looking at everybody else's to make sure that it doesn't conflict.
