The Unbreakable, Chain of Salvation (Rom. 8:30), part 4/4

If you’ve ever wondered why the Bible keeps insisting that God’s promises are sure, we lean straight into that tension and refuse to soften it. We start with a striking claim about Christ’s blood never being wasted, then read John 3:31–36 to show why eternal life rests in the Son’s hands, not ours. John 3 And Trusting The Son

I love adding to it. Okay, so I'm in John. John 3, and I'm at verse 31. I'm gonna read to 36 and I'll end it, but I just love what this says. And it says, He who comes from above is above all. He who is from the earth is from the earth and talks from an earthly point of view. He who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies about what he has actually seen and heard, yet no one accepts what he says. Whoever does accept what he says, puts his he puts his seal on the fact that God is true, because the one whom God sent speaks God's words. For God does not give him the spirit in limited degree. The Father loves the Son and has put everything in his hands. So whoever trusts in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but but remains subject to God's wrath. And just all of it all together in one. Just all of it right there. What is that?

Salvation As God’s Finished Work

And so this chain, as we keep calling it, revealed that salvation is entirely the work of God from beginning to end. And it secures all the it secures the confidence of us all that what He has purposed, what He has decreed, what He has ordered, He Himself will be the one who brings it to completion. He's the one who will do it. And He cannot be denied even by our own wills, because, as we always say, it is He who works in us to will and to do. And I don't know why this is a problem for people to understand. It's not He is working in us to will and to do, but that's not the situation. It is not us being the workmanship created in Him unto good works, but that's not in the equation. He's telling us what He does. And He tells us and He makes it clear and He makes it in no uncertain terms that nothing gets in His way. Nothing gets in His way. The church of His, which is all of us, shall prevail. If one person is lost, that's not prevailing. How can the church be said to be pre to prevail? How can the church be said as Christ said? How can the gates of hell not prevail against the church if one of us is missing? It's impossible.

Born Of God Not Human Will

Alright, I got it. Okay. As many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Which were born. I see where you're going. Which were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. So there in these verses, Meg is pointing out to us again in these verses that the work of salvation is completely, totally, and entirely a work of God's sovereign purpose in us. The Lord Jesus Christ laid down his life to save us. Not for the prospect of our salvation, but for the conclusion of our salvation, the granting of our salvation. There is no scenario where one for whom he died is lost. Anyone who is lost is not among those who were numbered, among those whose names were written in the Lamb's book of life, as we spoke about several weeks ago on the Lord's Day evening. Okay.

I don't want to say sound too harsh here, Jonathan, but these truths, God's children does not fight against him on these things. God's children love these truths. God's children are on the same page with Jesus and what the Father and the Jesus and the Holy Spirit are accomplishing in creation. If you're a religious person that is fighting against God in all these areas and saying God has no right, and if it makes you angry, you should check your heart because that's not what children of God do. God should not invoke anger and rebellion in the heart of his children.

Oh, I think it's I just love what Pat was saying. You know, early in my walk, I can understand a new believer wanting to believe that it was their will that chose God because we they haven't grown to know God in a way that they're they're fully trusting. And I say that because early on in my walk, it worried me that maybe people I love weren't chosen. As I've grown in Christ, I trust him in all things. His will be done, his will is best. He knows, he knows things that we don't know. And I've learned to trust him and believe in him, and whatever his will is, that's what I want. And it's it's right. So I encourage anyone who is new to the faith, hang in there, trust in the Lord fully. It is it's the most beautiful thing. God is good.

For those of you who are holding on to your own free will doctrines for a sense of control, do you really trust yourself? The Free Will Prayer Paradox

Well, I was just thinking, you know, and I've thought of this before. This thought has come to my mind prior. Is yes, you we say we have this free will, or some do, right? And then they go and they pray this prayer for people that they love. Lord, intervene in their life. Lord, allow them not to do X, Y, and Z. And that is impeding on their free will, the very thing that they say that they have, and that they should, God should honor and respect. Yet they pray for God to go against other people's free will on the behalf of them for what is best for them. So again, building off of what Sister Lisa and Pat is saying, they trust God to do that much, right? Right. But don't trust when God says that I have a plan better in mind of you to predestine you into life. And it's not people who are unbelievers that have an issue with this, but it is some people who are so-called Christians that have the biggest problem that say that God just loves everybody or he loves so much, but they have an issue that he loved them so much that he had them in mind before the foundation of the world. It just is mind-blowing this this double talk of these people.

Well, yeah, I agree with you, sister. I mean, I and I totally get what you're saying. They're going to and fro. If you notice, they're going on the resurrected side, then they're going back to the crucifixion side, then they're going back on this and that. It's like they're scattered, you know, and they are the ones that call themselves true Christians. I get that uh a hundred percent. But what I want to want to add to this is every time I was reading in scripture, I kept noticing that after Christ, it would say he had trusting faithfulness. And I was like, whoa, hang on a second. What there's something else to this just faith, because even the demons believe. So it's not just belief. So that's why I said trust earlier, because it's a trusting faithfulness. And if you have a trusting faithfulness in what Christ did and what God did, then to be thought and finished and complete, then you're being like Christ.

So it's it's Christ, yeah. So it's like Christ is having that. Of course, we're gonna we're gonna fall into that, but that trusting faithfulness is where we need to boldly stand, and everything that he says is absolute truth. You apply it to your life, you walk in it, you stand in it, you stay in the spirit, and you know, I I have problems with my personal John, I'm not one. Again, I definitely will well not be trusted, but I don't expect you to, because I'm imperfect. But I also people around me, it's you have that expectation they're gonna have trusty faithfulness in him more than it is of you, even like you said, for your family, for your friends. Do you have to have it more than sometimes they're watching you? Sometimes they're seeing, oh, this is what it looks like, because you're standing in it, and other people don't know what it looks like. That's why they get get that way of going back and forth. Sometimes they don't just like. So sometimes we have to be the ones to spread it out and show it, not just speak it, but also show it in our actions and show it in our show our fruits. Just do it.

Why Predestination Hits Our Pride

I want Meg first and I want Terry to ask answer also. Meg first, and then Terry asked it this. Let me ask you the question. Why do you think these doctrines that we're talking about? Foreknowledge, predestination, called, justified, glorified, especially when we talk about predestination. But all these are tied together. Why in your mind, Meg, and then Terry, why do you think people have such a hard time with these doctrines? Why do you think?

I think that people have a hard time with these doctrines because it causes the flesh to cease. It the flesh belong doesn't belong in the word of God. And I think man has a God in their own mind that they want to worship. And when they meet the God of the Bible, who who is exactly what these doctrines teach, people have a problem because it's not the God that they expected in their own mind.

I think the main thing is if they find it extremely offensive to their sense of self, I think it's pride. I think it's a lack of control. Many people have an idol in their life called control. So I would say control, pride, and sense of self to the point where they feel as though, what about me? You know, uh, I need to contribute to my own performance, what about my performance? It does it mean anything? My what about these good works? What about this? What about that? It comes to back back down though to to I I I would say centering around pride.

Promises Made Promises Kept

got another question. I want to ask, this time I want to ask Pat first and then Mariah to answer this question. Throughout the scriptures, but particularly in New Testament, and in particular, and in particular with Paul's writings, it seems that the Lord is going out of his way to prove that his promises are true and will be kept, that our salvation is secured in him. So my question is this, Pat and Demariah, why do we why should we, what do you think is the reason why this is such an important thing is to why is it so important that God will continue through our scriptures to reiterate that we should have this assurance? Why? Why does he why does he why does he say this to us so much?

You know, Jonathan, this is this is something that, man, you're asking a question that's gonna make a lot of people mad when they hear the answer. But the fact is, is God is the only source of life. He's the only source of goodness, he's the only throat source of righteousness. We've never thought a right thought in our life outside of God. So it's either come to him or be destroyed. Those are the options. Man will never accept this because we want to sit on the throne as God at ourselves. That's the fact of the of the matter is if our knee is not bent to the sovereignty of God, then we make ourselves God. And I know a lot of Christians don't want to hear that. They say, Well, what are you talking about? I call myself a Christian, I believe in Jesus. Well, who's in charge of your destiny? Because let me just say this, and I'll give the mic to Mariah because she's gonna say something wonderful. We all know that. Love you, sister Mariah. God must be sovereign over all these things, Jonathan, because he's the only one qualified for the job. No one else can do the job. No one else is able to. And if he doesn't do it, no one will. We need to get this.

Amen, brother. Mariah, what do you think? Well, looking from looking, sister, looking from God's perspective, he seems to want us to really understand promises made, promises kept. So in your mind, why does he continue to reiterate this theme throughout the scriptures?

For me, it's I would say the dependency for us to depend on him and that we can learn his character and who he is. He is unchanging and he is not a liar. And so he's continuously telling us the and conveying this truth that I don't lie, I'm not like man that I should lie, and I am immutable, and you can depend on me.

Right. Right. Lisa, question for you. When when we when we look at God giving us these assurances, do these assurances that he gives us do they lead to licentious living? Or does it lead to godly living? And why?

Well, his his promises lead us to godly living. He we we start to love what he loves. He is he dwells within us. We are becoming made in in his likeness. When we place our trust in him, and we when we are assured of these things, we know that all the good we do is him. If we do any good, it is all only him. We know, we believe what his word says. The assurances I think he gives us is because we while we are still in this flesh, you know, we are hard-headed. We needed to we we need to be some of us need more persuasion than others. Um but once you once you place your trust in him, it's it's beautiful. The good we do belongs to him, he gets the glory. The work we do are his works. You know, we talked about this today. You know, works, no born-again believer will say you don't work, but it's his works, not ours. I don't know if that made sense. I don't even know if I answered your question. Did I even answer your question?

Pat and then Mariah. Oh man, this what Lisa just said is so true. And you know something, Jonathan? A lot of people, uh, we've talked before how a lot of people have this arrogance. They think they would do better than Adam. But let me tell you something. Let's say that God erased original sin. Let's say that God restored you, you would fall just like he did. God gave him one, he gave him the law, but one command. One commandment, one commandment. And the and the man who was made perfectly upright could not adhere one law. Right. So don't we cannot be in in we cannot deceive ourselves into thinking that we would have done any better. Adam was the best that creation had to offer, right? And it wasn't good enough. The creator had to come. Oh man. Exactly right.

And and so while God is he is a promise keeper, not a truth promise breaker, I don't understand why people look for the error in God and there is no error in his ways. And so I was just thinking about the question. Which you asked me earlier, and I'm just thinking, man, doesn't he? There's not a work that he has left undone. Nothing. You know? And they they act like they have he has holes in his ship all throughout, and there is no anchor in which we could be assured that you know where he has placed us, there he can keep us.

Ooh, that's so good. Amen, sister. That is good. Yes. And you know, I was sitting there saying when she was saying in that we like nothing. I was reading in scripture about the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, because I keep telling everybody it's not about what you want, it's not about what you do, it's not about what you want. And that means I like nothing. So if the Lord is your shepherd, you lack nothing. So that's really good to stand on to. But I wanted to also interact with what Pat had said earlier, and and and I don't care if it ruffles feathers, you know, when when we got man over here pretending to be in control, which is they want to be God, they want to be a ruler, have possess, you know, have dominance over when actually God is sovereign and he's the one in control. So when we submit, we relinquish all control and we have no need to control because we are guided by the one who is the perfecter of our faith, the one who guides us in every step of the way. We can make it, but he's still gonna lead you where he wants you to go anyway. And if anybody hadn't heard, you know, learned anything from Jonah, he know he was stubborn. He still ended up going and doing what he needed to do, you know. So so we don't even, you know, with us, we don't have that fear. We trust in God and we don't have that fear that we're gonna lose our salvation or these these type of things that we keep hearing over and over again. But we know the word. And I love how he repeats it over and over again because he knew we would need it, but it also gives us reassurance and remembrance and keeps standing on it, renewing every day, every day, every day, because we knew we were gonna need it, especially in these times now. I mean, you know, you're sick and soothy in the in the end of days you're gonna have difficulties. Well, we do, but we know who to stick both to when we have these difficulties, and you guys are enough ways out of it. So so I just thought that, you know, just asking about that, relinquishing control is a submission to Christ. So we see those who struggle or are wrestling with those things need to really submit.

Can Salvation Be Lost

That's right. Sister Mig, my next question is for you. If a Christian, if a person who is supposed to be a true Christian could lose their salvation, what does that say about Christ and all of his work?

The the conclusion I've come up with is this it's very simple. I believe the Lord Jesus Christ can save me, but what I don't believe is that he can keep me. That in my book is unbelief. Period.

And so then then let me ask you this question. If that's possible, then how would you explain to somebody who believes that the significance of being taught to be assured? We read all these verses that talk about confidence and vic victory and being conquerors and having and having confidence. What is what is the point of that? If how do you explain to somebody who believes they can lose their salvation, how do you explain to them what these other passages mean that are meant to give us confidence? I would say what do you mean, like in other words, they they they read the same Bible we're reading. They conclude that we can lose our salvation, yet we see all these passages like these that make it certain that we can be confident that our salvation is secure. So, how do you direct somebody with that mindset to reconcile that mindset with these truths that we talked about tonight?

I would reconcile it with 1 Corinthians chapter 2, verse 14. For the natural man cannot understand the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, nor can he know them. Why? Because he is not spiritually discerned.

So, what does that tell you about the person who makes these accusations about the about our our Lord's gospel and his and what he does?

I would answer again, Galatians chapter 1, verse 8 and 9. If we or an angel from heaven come to you preaching any other gospel than the gospel in which you have received, let him be accursed. So I would say, if you have a different gospel, you have a different Jesus. And I would preach them to gospel in hopes of their salvation.

The next thing I would say is what our Lord and Savior said. They love me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

And I I love the the conclusion, this this concluding part where we all got to talk and a little bit more than normally. And I and I love it when we get to have this kind of dialogue because what it does and what these questions are intended to do is help each other sharpen each other and to be sharpened ourselves by the nature of these questions and the answers that we have to think about. And so I I want to challenge every one of us to continue challenging each other uh in these matters and and think more deeply about these things because these are what carries us through. These are the the these truths are the tools that God uses to bring us along, to carry us along to the maintenance of a of a faith that can only lead to what we have already been promised, which is that we are already glorified. Already glorified. So, Meg, if you would close us up in prayer tonight, and I want everybody to pray for our sister Angie, things she's going through. The Lord knows what they are. So when you pray, he knows what they are, and also uh include our brother Kaz in your prayers too, because he has things that he has on his heart to do, and to pray that God will give him the wherewithal to accomplish these things that he has laid upon him.

Closing Prayer And Requests

Dear Heavenly Father, Lord God, we just thank you so much for another just Lord, I'm just so joyful when we get together in your word, Heavenly Father. It your word is so true. Lord, we have faith and trust in you, Lord God, as we navigate your scriptures. Thank you for the confidence that you you give your children, knowing that when we read your word, Lord God, that you are faithful and that you are true, you are a God that cannot lie, you are a God who is the author and finisher of our faith. You're a God who seals us in our salvation until the day of redemption. You are a God who calls us, predestines us, sanctifies us, justifies us, glorifies us, and there is no sure better foundation than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. And Lord, we thank you for that. Lord, I just want to thank you for Angie coming in the live tonight. Lord, thank you. Thank you for allowing the word of God to edify her, encourage her, and lift her up. Lord, in the days ahead, I pray for her faith, Heavenly Father. And last but certainly not least, I pray for every single person in this panel who is under the sound of my voice. Thank you for the people in the comments who come diligently seeking your word and who are hungry and on fire for the truth of your word. Lord, allow them to continue to walk in your truth. Because Lord, you are the God that perseveres. No matter what we go through, no matter what trial and tribulation, you are sovereign in all things. And I thank you for that, Lord God.
