ESSENTIAL BAPTISM - part 4/4

“Baptism now saves you” can land like a mic drop or a problem, depending on what you think the rest of the New Testament teaches. We sit down for an honest, Scripture-heavy conversation about Christian baptism, salvation by grace through faith, and what 1 Peter 3:21 is actually saying when it links baptism to a “good conscience toward God.” Is water baptism the cause of salvation, or the response that naturally follows a heart already changed by Christ?

A turning point comes when Lisa shares her testimony: raised Catholic, not taught to read the Bible, then born again in 2020 with a dramatic change she can’t explain away. She was baptized as a baby and later felt the Holy Spirit pressing her to be baptized as a believer two years after she knew she was saved. Big gravy. I have a question, and it's just in regards to my own salvation and what are your thoughts on it? Because I don't know if you know much of my background. I'm recently born again, so I'm not a lifelong Bible reader. I was raised Catholic and I never touched a Bible. In fact, I never wanted to. I was taught that it was too holy for me. So, like I did not want to touch it. When I was born again in 2020, um, I it happened anyway. I just I just I gave my life to Christ in a way that there was a big, huge change in me. There were things that I didn't really realize were fruit of the spirit at that time because it's the first time I picked up the Bible. So I've been reading ever since. But all of these things are very, very confusing to me. I was baptized as a baby, and again, I never even it didn't even occur to me until two years after I had been born again. And it's and it wasn't because I read about it, it was because the Holy Spirit put it on my heart, and I it it was it was crazy to me, this feeling that I needed to get baptized. And so that happened two years after I know that I was saved. So my question is how what would you say to me? Was I falsely converted all up until that time I got in the water? In uh like what would you say to that? I mean, that's my that's basically a little bit of my true testimony.

It's it's it's funny. Um it's not funny, but it's ironic that you're asking me that this question tonight because I've had at least three conversations in the last three nights about the same thing that you're talking about. And so I I merely pointed to the the Great Commission in Matthew 28, 19 and 20. When Jesus said, All power has been given unto me, and he sends his apostles out to perform the Great Commission. There's three things that God prescribes He wants to happen. Number one, you become a disciple that is a follower of Jesus, become a student of his word. Number two, that the second priority was to baptize all nations. Number three, the third prior was to teach them the commandments of Christ. And he said, Lo, I'll be with you all the way to the end of the age. Some translations say about the gospel, and so the only thing I can do is tell you what the word says, and then you have to decide whether or not that's what you did. So uh, so they you know, a lot of times to me the most important question is one that Heather brought out in uh Acts 16 when he said, Sir, what must I do to be saved? And in Acts chapter 2, when they cried out, what must we do? I think you have to look at that, read it, study it, pray about it, and then you know, decide what's best for you. Let me ask let me ask you, let me ask you a question, brother. Yeah.

So so you would say that well, I guess I asked, I guess you already answered this question. I was I just want to make sure I got this right. So salvation is not only because somebody wrote here in a comment, they said baptism is the remission of sin. Now, the last time I checked, the scripture says, without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins. But what I hear you telling me, and I don't want to put words in your mouth because I don't want you to get mad at me. So what I'm so what I'm asking is this remission of sins cannot be, by your definition, the only thing that saves. It is the south, the it is the blood of Christ, in addition to the baptismal waters. Is that correct?

Yeah, of course. First of all, I didn't I didn't say what you just uh said earlier, but yes, yeah, that's correct. And here's the the thing about when Jesus was hanging on the cross and the two thieves were hanging by his side, the Jews demanded that they speed up death. So they went and broke the legs of the two thieves. He was already unalived. So they pierced him in the side, and out forth came blood and water. He shed his blood in his unaliving. If you go to Romans chapter 6 and read that, you'll find that that's how you get rid of the old man and comes up comes the new man through baptism. It says, You will don't you know that you were baptized into Christ? You were baptized into his death and into his burial and life and his resurrection, you came forth having put off the old man of sin, and now you can walk in the newness of life. That's what the scripture says, that's what I believe, that's what I teach. I don't add nothing to it, and

Spirit Versus Water In Salvation

So I don't think any Christian, any true Christian believes that they should avoid baptism. Every true Christian should seek baptism. So, but when I read in when I read in Titus 3, it says here, Paul says, After that the kindness and love of God, our Savior, toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness, which we have done, but according to his mercy, he saved us. And he says, How? By the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

Once they've always saved, we need to get rid of that slogan, and I and I'll tell you why. So is the washing in your mind, is is the washing of regeneration, is it something spiritual or is it water baptism? Something spiritual, brother. I agree. I totally agree. But it but it refers to the work of the Holy Spirit, same calling it the washing of regeneration.

The whole chapter is about the word that's being sent, right? Yep. And in about verse 10, it should say something along the lines of like the snow that falls down to the earth from the heavens and does not return the waters thereof, right? Bringing seed to the sower and bread to eater. So again, we know the water, right? The renewing of the mind, the washing by the water of the word, the living waters, right? And at the same time, you have the seed is the word of God, and you have the bread of life. And in John 6, he is the bread of life. We see in Jeremiah 15, 16, your words were found, and I ate them. They became to me a joy in the delight of my heart, for I'm called by your name, O Lord, God host. So everything about this should always go back to the word. And I think that if we go to Hebrews 6 and the end of five, but the beginning of six, and it talks about the elementary doctrines of Christ, the elementary teachings, one of which is the washings, right? But the apostles said, but let us move on if possible. Like let us move on to perfection. But what are the things of perfection within the word? We have perfect peace. He keeps imperfect peace those whose minds are stayed on them because they trust him. You have perfect love, right? Right. That casts out all fear. You have his grace is sufficient and power made perfect. All those things are within, all those things will will pierce the heart. That pricking of the heart, the circumcision of the heart, the judging of the thoughts and the attitudes of the heart. And so I think it's a complete recovery within and upon. And I think that anytime we try to remove any of that process, we're telling God, I want A, B, and C, but I don't want everything that you have for me. Because there's nothing within His word that's not beneficial to the believer.

And so, and and so, and like I said, and I meant this when I said earlier to everybody here. My position is that baptism number one. Baptism is uh really the first act of obedience that every Christian should be ready and eager and anxious to do. Every Christian. So I want to make that clear, number one. Everybody should be baptized. It is something, it is a first act of obedience. If you are a Christian here and you haven't been baptized, I don't understand why you would not want to be. But that's between you and your guy. But we are clearly told, and I know I'm not having a disagreement with at least Jerry here on this issue, that we have to be, that we that we should be baptized. There's no excuse for it. That being said, number two, my position is there are a mirror, there are myriad reasons why a person can be saved apart from baptism. Death he was on a battlefield, which I'm familiar with from my time in the service, accidents, any number of reasons. A special need? Any number of reasons, special needs, any number of reasons. And none of those reasons that would prevent a person from being baptized would not prevent a person from believing.

What I want to say is this I have I I will never accept I will never accept that the Bible teaches, because I don't believe it does, that if you haven't been baptized, you're damned, regardless of if you believe or not. I do believe I do believe, like what Greg said, he and I think he put it perfectly, that baptism is not to is not the means to the end that we're pursuing. It is the other way around. Receiving the end of our faith, which is salvation, leads us to go being baptized. Sinners aren't running around going around saying, I want to be baptized. Believers are.

Is Baptism Required Or Obedience

When you study the book of Acts, you will find, and I want you to tell me if I'm mistaken, if you study it, you will find that in every single example of conversion, someone responding to the gospel, they were baptized immediately, whether it was morning, noon, or night. The other point I want to make is when you talk about somebody on the battlefield or somebody that has been here and been there, you don't know how many times they've heard the gospel and rejected it. You have no way of knowing that. And so it's the Bible says the day you hear my voice, harden not your heart. Today is the day of salvation, and now is the acceptable time. When you have that opportunity, you have to grab it.

Okay, so Peter says baptism now saves us. Well, Paul says to Timothy, let the women be silent in church. The women shall be saved through childbearing. So is that how women get saved through having babies? Because if so, we can get a whole bunch of guys way more involved in evangelism. So all that to say this, even the word saved doesn't always refer to eternal salvation, you to eternal salvation. It's true. That's all. So yeah, we're justified by faith. That's it, not of works. Baptism is a work. There you go.

Amen. I was going to bring that text up. Greg split it from me. Um, I think to go back to the text we were using, I think it is important that we understand and put words in context. I was going to use what Greg used, but also we find in Luke 23, 35, when Jesus was hanging on a cross, and those that stood around, they said, that he saved others, let him save himself. So does that mean that that word saved there does not mean deliverance or or anything like that, or does it mean that eternal security, which Jesus is trying to save his soul, you know, the son, the very Son of God, who was before creation. So I think it's important to look at words in their passages, and like you said, that word is only used twice in the scriptures.

Um, and I would also say that uh I think we have to understand the difference, Jonathan, between salvation, which is by grace through faith, and understand the difference between that and what discipleship is. Matthew 28, 19, we have three clauses there. Me and Meg talked about this last night. And the first clause we find Jesus says to go make disciples.

The second clause is to baptize disciples, and then the third is to teach them to obey all that I've commanded. So, like you said, uh I I've never baptized an unbeliever, never seen unbelievers come to church uh wanting to be baptized. Romans 8 teaches us that the natural man can't even obey the things of God. And uh to finish up here, I think Paul understood this teaching clearly because he also says that Christ did not send me to baptize. And then we have the conjunction but to preach the gospel. So Paul understood the difference between salvation and discipleship. So I think it's important for us to understand the difference and not mix them up. God bless you.

You know, the funny thing is, I I started a series on Joseph about two weeks ago, and I don't know how I got distracted from it, but I still got all my my notes because I always keep my notes with me, but whatever. But I I love the story of Joseph. I don't think I don't think that there's any more, I don't think, I don't think anybody in the Old Testament typifies Christ more so than Joseph.

No, I I started it, but I I just never I somehow I got distracted because of the Daniel 70 weeks, but I started with Joseph, so but you basically just gave me a good reason to pick it up again, so I will, and and and I'll definitely do that. So I appreciate you bringing that up, Nicole, because actually that's where I was I wanted to spend a few weeks on Joseph. But anyway, that being said, I want to again thank you, everybody, for coming on here. And and you know, it's it's good to have these kind of discussions, whether they go, you know, whether they get heated or not. That's what we're supposed to do. You know, but like somebody said earlier about studying, studying the word of God, search the scriptures and things like that. That's what that's all I want to promote. And I want people to be able to walk away from here tonight, whether listen outside of the uh of our conversation or people on the conversation, check these things out to see what what see whether they're true. Test the truth and and verify. And so that's what we're supposed to do and help each other grow. Because you never know. Somebody might come to you one day and say, you know what? Now I get it. Somebody might come to you and say, Nope, you got it wrong. And this is what we are supposed to do. So that's all I want to say about that. And I wanted to thank everybody here for your kind attention, like always, and continue to be in prayer, continue to be in the word of God, and continue to try to make fellowship enjoyable with everybody that come we come into contact with, especially those who are of the household of faith.
