Colossians 3:5 (NIV) Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Hey, welcome to The Simple Truth. I’m Julie Carruth.

In Colossians chapter 3, Paul sets out to remind us that Christ is all sufficient for our life here and now in this present moment and for our eternal life.

We continue with Colossians three verse 5 with,Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Paul says “therefore,” which refers back to verse 1, so this could read, “therefore, since you have been raised with Christ, let your life reflect it.” How? Well first, Paul is going to give us several guidelines that aligned with the old life we had before Christ.

But before we look at them, we must remember even just a few verses back, Paul warned us against legalism with legalism being things like Do this. Don’t do this. Eat this. Not that. Become circumcised. Follow the Jewish holidays. That’s legalism. But please don’t see this list Paul’s about to give us as legalistic. You don’t have to stop doing these things to achieve a new life in Christ. If you’re a follower of Christ, you’re born anew. The elimination of these things should come as a result of your new life. It’s like you desire to follow after Christ and become more like him and as a result you don’t want these things Paul lists.

So, First, put to death your earthly nature. “Put to death” means to radically eradicate. Think of it like literally taking a scalpel and cutting away something out of your body that doesn’t belong there. Like cancer. That’s what put to death means. And Paul says put to death your earthly nature. Anything that belonged to the old life before Christ.

For example, Paul says that includes, first, sexual immorality, then, impurity (meaning moral uncleanness which includes your imagination and your speech), and lust (which is desiring something that doesn’t belong to you), and evil desires and greed, which is idolatry (which is a way of believing that everything exists for me). Paul says these are things that existed in your earthly nature.

So, your Simple Truth for today: Paul says if any of these things exist in your life, you are to cut them out of your life. Because those things belong to the old way of life. You now live a new life that is becoming more like Christ each and every day.

Have a blessed day. I’ll see you again tomorrow!
