me pretty quickly right away was that how much you're on your own within it as you do your assignments and as you listen to lessons and as you continue on through the years at college. 00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:56.960 And what struck me was that you have to be so deliberate about getting things in on time, about doing them properly, finishing the doing the assignments with the proper instructions. 00:02:57.280 --> 00:03:03.280 Because in high school, the teacher walks pretty closely with you and tells you what to do and gives you a lot of grace. 00:03:03.439 --> 00:03:05.599 But in college, there was not much grace. 00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:09.759 It was just like you get it done, you have to do it this way, and if you don't, you're gonna fail. 00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:12.879 And I failed my first assignment in photography. 00:03:13.280 --> 00:03:17.919 And the thing that's interesting about that is that the Christian walk is very much like that. 00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:21.759 It's that you have to be deliberate about things. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:27.120 Yes, you are saved by grace alone, but you need to be deliberate about things in your walk with Christ. 00:03:27.360 --> 00:03:29.439 And the we're gonna look at the book of Psalms. 00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:40.960 We're gonna look at Psalm 146, and the thing that is so interesting about Psalms is that it shows you every aspect of life that you can experience. 00:03:42.080 --> 00:04:01.199 In Psalms 1, it opens by saying this Blessed is the man and woman who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. 00:04:01.520 --> 00:04:11.199 Now, the book of Psalms, the first two Psalms are used, you can view them as kind of pillars as you enter into the book, the entire book of Psalms. 00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:16.720 Now I've been reading a lot of Lord of the Rings lately, so I'm gonna use another Lord of the Rings um example. 00:04:16.959 --> 00:04:26.240 In the Fellowship of the Ring, they decide to go through the mines of Moria to get through mountains instead of going around them or going through a pass in the of the mountains. 00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:33.439 And when they get to the secret entrance to get into the mines, they come to a blank wall. 00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:38.319 And they have to they have to wait for the moon to hit the wall so it shows the arch. 00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:43.279 But the only way into the mine is through that arch, and they have to figure out how to open it. 00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:56.000 The book of Psalms is very similar, that you have to go through the arches of Psalm 1 and 2 and enter into the life of the blessed person, to the pilgrim as he goes through life. 00:04:56.160 --> 00:04:57.759 That's what the book of Psalms is. 00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:01.839 One of the reformers, Martin Luther, calls it the mini Bible. 00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:07.439 Because in this, you experience every aspect of the human emotion. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:17.600 You experience high mountaintops of joy, and you experience really low mount uh low, low depths of despair in the book of Psalms. 00:05:17.920 --> 00:05:19.199 You get everything in it. 00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:26.319 You can always go to the Psalms, whatever you're feeling, you can go to it and find the psalm that speaks to that emotion. 00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:31.279 And then the book of Psalms opens with saying, The blessed is does this. 00:05:31.600 --> 00:05:35.120 And then it ends with five psalms of praise. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:48.000 So the way of blessed is that you enter through these two gates, these two um pillars, and you continue on, and you acknowledge that all these things happen within life: joys and sorrow. 00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:55.360 But every psalm except one always ends with acknowledging the Lord as Savior and as steadfast. 00:05:55.600 --> 00:06:02.560 And it's fitting that the book ends with psalms of praise, calling praise after all these experiences of emotions. 00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:04.879 There's praise and praise and praise. 00:06:05.199 --> 00:06:12.720 And the psalm we're looking at today, Psalm 146, is the first psalm of the five Psalms that end the book. 00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:20.000 And it is a song of praise, and it's a song of Psalm that shows the blessedness of life, the way of blessedness. 00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:21.600 Or you can say godliness. 00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:23.600 Blessedness just means godliness. 00:06:23.759 --> 00:06:24.720 So let's look at it. 00:06:24.879 --> 00:06:26.800 Let's look at Psalm 146. 00:06:28.079 --> 00:06:39.519 And the way to structure this, we can summarize it in one sentence, and it's this the way of the blessed is deliberate praise, trust, and hope in the covenant God. 00:06:39.759 --> 00:06:40.800 I'll say it again. 00:06:41.040 --> 00:06:48.160 The way of blessedness is deliberate praise, trust and hope in the covenant God. 00:06:48.399 --> 00:06:51.600 Now, point one, deliberate praise, verses one and two. 00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:56.560 Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul. 00:06:56.800 --> 00:07:00.879 I will sing praise, I will praise the Lord as long as I live. 00:07:01.040 --> 00:07:05.199 I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:09.120 Now, verses one and two, there's two things about them. 00:07:09.360 --> 00:07:16.720 Verse one is a call to corporate prayer or corporate praise, and that's where you gather together as a congregation. 00:07:16.959 --> 00:07:23.439 Within the lives of the Jewish people, gathering together at the temple was extremely important. 00:07:23.680 --> 00:07:27.120 They would come together and they would worship their God. 00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:42.319 And now it's also very important in our day to gather as God's people on a Sunday and worship together, to pray together, to come together and talk about what we're going through together as God's people, as family members. 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:43.439 We're a family here. 00:07:43.600 --> 00:07:46.000 That's the whole point of church, is to be a family. 00:07:46.240 --> 00:07:55.920 And within a family, there's there's always sometimes, and I don't know about I don't know about your family, but my family, sometimes you just butt heads, and that's the that's the part of being a family. 00:07:56.079 --> 00:07:59.680 But you stick together through those times, through those hard times. 00:07:59.920 --> 00:08:04.959 So you come together in corporate praise, and you praise God. 00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:10.720 And you do this because it nourishes your soul, it nourishes you as you walk together. 00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:16.879 And that's what the psalmist opens with is come together and praise the Lord. 00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:24.399 And then in the second verse, it goes from a plural to a singular, and then it is a call to praise. 00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:27.920 The psalmist says, Praise the Lord, O my soul. 00:08:28.160 --> 00:08:31.040 I will praise the Lord as long as I live. 00:08:31.279 --> 00:08:35.200 I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:44.559 So what he's saying here is that yes, you gather together, but during the week, you praise God still continually on your own. 00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:53.919 That is the walk of the blessedness, of the blessed person, is that they will gather and then they go out and still continue to praise God. 00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:58.399 It's not just coming together for one hour on a Sunday and then that's it. 00:08:58.480 --> 00:08:59.679 That's all you do. 00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:05.360 But it goes, he when he talks about it, he says, Oh my soul, that is your inner being. 00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:09.279 Your inner being praises God, praises the Lord. 00:09:09.519 --> 00:09:14.000 And then it's as long as I live, it's your entire life, it does this. 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:17.120 And while I have my being until death. 00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:20.320 That's what that's what the psalmist is opening with. 00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:27.279 Is that I'll gather, I'll there's a call to praise together, and then there's a call to praise on my on your own during the week. 00:09:27.600 --> 00:09:34.399 The idea here is that I will praise my God, not just on Sunday, but my entire life with my whole being. 00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:41.759 Now you might be thinking, I know I thought this when I first looked at this, that I have to be continually singing God's praises through the week. 00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:46.399 Um, you do not want me, you do not want to hear me sing praises on my own, trust me. 00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:51.200 So what this means is that, yes, we come together and we sing and we pray. 00:09:51.360 --> 00:10:04.240 But during the week, as we do our, as we do our tasks that the Lord has given us, as we work or as we enjoy retirement, we praise God, and that could just be thanking God for these moments that you have during the week. 00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:10.799 It's just orienting our minds to always remember, to thank God, to praise Him. 00:10:11.279 --> 00:10:17.759 I I enjoy going for nature walks or being in nature, doing sport-related things in nature. 00:10:17.919 --> 00:10:21.039 And during those moments, when I remember, I just thank God. 00:10:21.279 --> 00:10:27.600 I'm sure there's moments you may enjoy doing other sports that bring you a lot of joy. 00:10:27.759 --> 00:10:32.000 But it's instead of thanking ourselves for it, we thank God for it. 00:10:32.159 --> 00:10:36.559 Or we maybe gather together family, or we enjoy a good book. 00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:38.080 We just thank God for it. 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:41.120 That's what the psalm here is trying to orient. 00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:49.039 It's trying to orient your life to always thank God, not other things, to thank Him for these blessings you have in your life. 00:10:49.200 --> 00:10:50.879 It orients your being. 00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:57.679 So the way of the blessed is deliberate praise, trust and hope in the covenant God. 00:10:58.320 --> 00:10:58.960 Point two. 00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:02.559 The psalmist now turns to the idea of trust. 00:11:02.879 --> 00:11:06.240 Deliberate trust, verses three to six. 00:11:07.039 --> 00:11:13.279 Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no salvation. 00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:17.039 When his breath departs, he returns to the earth. 00:11:17.200 --> 00:11:19.840 On that very day his plans perish. 00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:33.440 Blessed is he whose help is in the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, who made who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever. 00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:43.120 Now, as I was reading them the commentaries, the idea here is that you trust in God for your salvation, is that you will be saved through faith. 00:11:43.200 --> 00:11:45.919 You trust in your faith that He's given you. 00:11:46.240 --> 00:11:51.440 Now, the idea here in the commentaries is that a lot of people think King David wrote this psalm. 00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:55.840 It's not, it doesn't give the author here who wrote it, but a lot of people think it was King David. 00:11:55.919 --> 00:11:59.840 And if it was King David who wrote this, this is very interesting. 00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:01.360 Because he was a king. 00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:07.600 He was in charge of a huge kingdom, he was powerful, he was well respected. 00:12:07.840 --> 00:12:16.559 But here, this the king, the psalmist, writes, don't trust in me for your salvation, trust in your God for salvation. 00:12:16.799 --> 00:12:23.679 Now, princes in our modern times, we can call that the influential, the politician, the celebrity. 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:38.559 To give an example of this, about what the psalmist is trying to show, is that um I read this article once a while ago, and it was about an actor who who um they're filming a movie in Calgary, right by the mountains, right by them. 00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:44.320 And during during the filming, the actor was doing his thing, and it was a winter shoot. 00:12:44.480 --> 00:12:50.080 And then all of a sudden, this weather system came in and it got really hot. 00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:55.679 Now, this actor was one of the was a big spokesperson about global warming. 00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:57.440 He was very intense about it. 00:12:57.679 --> 00:13:04.159 So when he when this happened, he right away went to Twitter and started saying, here's your evidence for global warming. 00:13:04.399 --> 00:13:09.679 But what it really was was just a chinook that normally happens, that comes over the mountains in the wintertime. 00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:13.120 And it warms the place up and it feels like summer for a bit. 00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:20.799 Now, Christians, as Christians, we are called to take care of God's creation, but we need to do it in a proper way. 00:13:21.919 --> 00:13:30.080 What the actor did here was that he just made a claim without having any evidence for what was happening, and it was the Chinook. 00:13:30.480 --> 00:13:32.559 And politicians promise the same thing. 00:13:32.720 --> 00:13:38.559 They promise this salvation-like future, whether it's on the left or whether it's on the right or in the middle. 00:13:38.720 --> 00:13:43.519 They all promise it, but they do it at the expense of certain people, certain groups. 00:13:43.759 --> 00:13:51.679 Or there's online influencers who promise a perfect life, or advertisements who promise a perfect life if you buy these products. 00:13:51.840 --> 00:13:54.080 But you have to buy them, you have to purchase them. 00:13:54.480 --> 00:14:02.879 See, these there's always these things that are telling us if you trust in me, you will have salvation, you'll have a good life, you'll be saved through them. 00:14:03.120 --> 00:14:07.279 But the psalmist is showing here that all of these will fail. 00:14:07.440 --> 00:14:13.440 When their breath runs out, they will be no more, they return to dust, and their plans are done. 00:14:13.679 --> 00:14:15.519 That is what the psalmist is saying here. 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:24.080 The psalmist wants the congregation to know that there you can only trust in the will and salvation in God. 00:14:24.240 --> 00:14:33.600 It's either you trust in the creator of the universe to give you salvation, or you trust in man, plants which perish. 00:14:33.840 --> 00:14:36.320 That is what the psalmist is talking about here. 00:14:36.639 --> 00:14:40.720 And how but you might be thinking, how can you believe the earth was created? 00:14:40.879 --> 00:14:42.960 It says here that He created the earth. 00:14:43.120 --> 00:14:44.480 How do you believe in that? 00:14:44.720 --> 00:14:50.320 Well, this isn't an apologetics for creationism, but I would love to have a coffee about it. 00:14:50.480 --> 00:15:01.120 But to give a brief answer to it is that we have to come to terms with how this earth was created and how everything is so easy, so perfectly designed and ordered in this world. 00:15:01.360 --> 00:15:02.559 We have to come to terms with that. 00:15:02.639 --> 00:15:04.879 We have to give an explanation for that. 00:15:05.279 --> 00:15:14.320 And the explanation that the earth was created, in my opinion, gives the best example, an explanation of why of how it came to being. 00:15:14.559 --> 00:15:16.960 I would love to talk more about that after. 00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:19.919 But if you look at verse 6, this is what I really want to look at. 00:15:20.080 --> 00:15:26.320 Verse 6, if you have your Bible here, or if you remember, go home and underline this one. 00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:29.120 Who keeps faith forever? 00:15:29.360 --> 00:15:32.159 The God who keeps faith forever. 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:35.919 See, this is something that is so good to reflect on. 00:15:36.159 --> 00:15:42.320 That there is a God in this world that when you become his, he keeps you forever. 00:15:42.480 --> 00:15:46.399 It's not you keeping him, he keeps you forever. 00:15:46.960 --> 00:15:56.480 When you read the Bible, you see this over and over and over again that God keeps bringing his people to himself, keep calling his people to himself. 00:15:56.879 --> 00:16:01.840 When you look at history, you see God working within history, keeping his people with him. 00:16:02.159 --> 00:16:05.200 And if you keep a journal, I would highly recommend this. 00:16:05.440 --> 00:16:14.799 That when you journal things that happen in your life, you can look back on them and you can see where God has been working in your life and how he's kept you. 00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:17.120 He's kept you in his faith. 00:16:17.440 --> 00:16:23.759 See, there's a contrast between those who perish and those who trust in the everlasting God. 00:16:24.080 --> 00:16:30.080 The way of the blessed is deliberate praise, trust and hope in the covenant God. 00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:38.000 Now you might be thinking, I can you're saying I can only be blessed if I trust and praise in him. 00:16:38.559 --> 00:16:40.720 Isn't this selfish or narcissistic? 00:16:40.879 --> 00:16:42.879 Isn't this just a selfish God? 00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:45.039 Isn't he just a big narcissist? 00:16:45.600 --> 00:16:47.679 Well, look what the psalmist says. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:49.840 Verses five to nine. 00:16:50.320 --> 00:17:27.039 Blessed is he whose help is in the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever, who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry, the Lord sets the prisoners free, the Lord opens the eyes of the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous, the Lord watches over the sojourners, he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. 00:17:27.279 --> 00:17:34.079 Did you notice the switch in the name within the psalm that goes from God to Lord? 00:17:34.480 --> 00:17:40.079 That is a very significant thing to think about and to reflect on. 00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:46.960 It goes from the all-almighty God to the covenant personal loving God, the Yahweh. 00:17:47.200 --> 00:17:51.359 Now, in Genesis, God makes a covenant with Abraham. 00:17:51.680 --> 00:18:05.039 And what this cut what happens when he makes his covenant is that he makes Abraham fall asleep, and God passes through the animals that were cut up to the side that make the covenant symbolic. 00:18:05.279 --> 00:18:11.680 And what that means, what God does here, is that he doesn't require man to follow his covenant. 00:18:11.839 --> 00:18:14.240 He just requires man to trust in him. 00:18:14.960 --> 00:18:18.000 See, God makes the covenant and he can't break it. 00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:20.079 He keeps faith forever. 00:18:20.400 --> 00:18:23.359 See, God knew humans could not keep it. 00:18:23.599 --> 00:18:26.799 If you break down the verse, you see it over and over again. 00:18:27.039 --> 00:18:32.880 God helping those who are downcast, those who are in trouble, those who are weak. 00:18:33.119 --> 00:18:37.279 See, God saves the weak and he makes them his people. 00:18:37.599 --> 00:18:40.079 See, God doesn't want princes. 00:18:42.960 --> 00:18:44.880 He wants those who are in trouble. 00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:48.160 He wants those who are suffering to be his people. 00:18:48.319 --> 00:18:50.240 He calls them to be his people. 00:18:51.119 --> 00:18:58.799 See, the thing that what makes God's people so unique is that he will only accept them if they humble themselves. 00:18:59.039 --> 00:19:01.279 It's not if they exalt themselves. 00:19:01.440 --> 00:19:05.920 It's the last will be first, and the first will be last, as Jesus always says. 00:19:06.160 --> 00:19:12.960 Is that God requires those who serve, he wants those who to his people to be servant-hearted. 00:19:13.440 --> 00:19:17.279 See, God knows that humans can't keep his covenant. 00:19:17.599 --> 00:19:21.279 So he made he walked through the covenant for his people. 00:19:21.519 --> 00:19:23.920 It wasn't his people walking through it, it was him. 00:19:24.720 --> 00:19:27.359 Now, how else do we see this in the Bible? 00:19:27.680 --> 00:19:31.119 Well, the New Testament, Jesus, that's how you see it. 00:19:31.359 --> 00:19:35.839 You see it in Jesus all through his life and in his death and resurrection. 00:19:37.680 --> 00:19:44.559 He became a prisoner, he became humble, he became beaten and was crucified, so you may live. 00:19:44.880 --> 00:19:53.039 See, Jesus is the new covenant, and he is the one who comes and takes care of those who are weak and those who are suffering. 00:19:53.279 --> 00:20:00.079 And what it is, is that those who have faith and trust in Jesus will be saved, will experience the salvation. 00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:07.759 It's not the powerful, it is those who are weak and humble and say, God, I need you, I need your help in my life. 00:20:08.079 --> 00:20:16.720 See, God is not a narcissist, because the blessed pray praise and trust in him because he has done it all. 00:20:17.119 --> 00:20:22.240 He came, he sent his son for us, because he knew we cannot do it on our own. 00:20:22.559 --> 00:20:29.680 See, the way of the blessed is one of deliberate praise, trust, and hope in the covenant God. 00:20:30.160 --> 00:20:32.160 Now look at verse 10. 00:20:32.559 --> 00:20:37.759 The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. 00:20:37.920 --> 00:20:39.039 Praise the Lord. 00:20:39.279 --> 00:20:49.519 Now the psalmist does something here that's very that happens a lot in Hebrew poetry, is that it always starts with the same verse and ends with the same verse. 00:20:49.680 --> 00:20:51.920 Praise the Lord, praise the Lord. 00:20:52.079 --> 00:20:54.160 It does that in this one. 00:20:54.400 --> 00:20:56.640 That's, I believe it's called an inclusio. 00:20:56.960 --> 00:21:07.839 And what that means is that there's a call to praise in the beginning of the pilgrim's walk, walk, the blessed walk, and then there's going to be a call to praise in the eternal walk with the Lord. 00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:10.240 And this and the Psalm shows that here. 00:21:10.400 --> 00:21:12.559 It shows the life of the Blessed One. 00:21:12.799 --> 00:21:17.599 Those who trust in the Lord will be will call be called to eternal praise. 00:21:17.680 --> 00:21:34.319 And what that means is that when we put our faith and trust in Jesus, that when he came for those who are downcast, and he did it all on the cross, that those who are trusting him will have a future hope, and they will sing his praise. 00:21:34.559 --> 00:21:37.759 In his kingdom, the Lord will reign forever. 00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:43.680 Your God, O Zion, God's people, to all generations, praise the Lord. 00:21:43.920 --> 00:21:45.440 That's what's going on here. 00:21:45.599 --> 00:21:51.039 It's a life, a life of praise ends with a life of eternal praise. 00:21:51.279 --> 00:22:00.240 That is the future hope of the Christian, that Jesus will return, and though those who trust in him will have this life of eternal praise. 00:22:00.559 --> 00:22:07.279 See, the way of the blessed is one of deliberate praise, trust, and hope in the covenant God. 00:22:07.519 --> 00:22:25.119 It's hope in this covenant that God has done it all, that those are justified by faith, as we said over and over again, all through the book of Galatians, and as we remind you every
