are going to go to where the text goes, to what might be suggested here, and we're going to explore and see what exactly is happening at this threshing floor scene. 00:02:15.039 --> 00:02:16.479 So wonderful plan for your life, and maybe you experience that tension between our man-made plans and God's divine plan. 00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:55.279 What we see in Ruth chapter three is we see a But what we see put on display in Ruth chapter three, shining like a light, is the kind of assurance, the kind of unique assurance that we can rest in. 00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:14.639 We can rest feel restless, trying to understand what the plan is. 00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:31.759 Those of us who feel weary and heavy laden, trying to understand how things are going to unfold, there's good news for us today. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:37.759 And that good news is that we can rest assured in the arms of our Redeemer. 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:40.160 So here we are, Ruth chapter three. 00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:46.079 We've been going through these chapters, and we've met Ruth and we've met Naomi in chapter one. 00:05:46.399 --> 00:06:02.959 Both have endured famine, they've endured hardship, they've lost their husbands, they've lost their security, they've lost every safety net they thought that they had in the land of Moab, and now they're coming back to Naomi's hometown of Bethlehem because maybe, just maybe, there's hope to find food. 00:06:03.040 --> 00:06:06.800 There's hope to find enough provision to make it through the day. 00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:10.480 And then in chapter two, we met a guy named Boaz. 00:06:11.120 --> 00:06:15.519 Boaz, chapter two tells us, chapter two, verse 20 tells us, is a Goel. 00:06:15.920 --> 00:06:18.800 He's a kinsman redeemer, or he's a redeemer. 00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:31.839 He's a relative of Naomi's late husband Elimelech, who is in a unique position to provide security and provision for Ruth and Naomi both. 00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:37.279 That's why we see in chapter 3, verse 1, he's called a relative of them both. 00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:52.480 This kinsman redeemer comes from uh um parts of the Old Testament, Leviticus 25, Deuteronomy 25, that talk about God's provision for uh childless widows, those who don't have means to provide for themselves. 00:06:52.720 --> 00:07:11.920 This uh this meant that an available uh relative of a deceased husband could step into their place and make sure that these widows were cared for, make sure that they had the provision that they needed to live and thrive and flourish, and to make sure also that their property wasn't just parsed out, it stayed in the family. 00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:19.040 This was someone who could step in in such a critical moment of need and provide exactly the provision and security that was needed. 00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:23.360 This was God's intention for the kinsman redeemer. 00:07:23.519 --> 00:07:29.839 Here we find Boaz in this unique position to step in for Ruth and Naomi, and we already know that coming out of chapter two. 00:07:30.160 --> 00:07:38.319 Here we enter into chapter three and we find three scenes in chapter three, much like chapter two unfolded, we see three scenes that parallel that. 00:07:38.560 --> 00:07:41.600 We see Naomi briefing Ruth on the plan. 00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:48.959 We see that Naomi has a wonderful life for or plan for Ruth's life, and how Ruth's life is going to unfold here. 00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:59.680 Scene two, we see Ruth and Boaz, and we see what unfolds is a powerful shining light for just how amazing Cod's redemption is. 00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:07.839 And then we conclude with scene three where Ruth goes back to Naomi and reports what's uh happened between she and Boaz. 00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:11.040 Chapters three and chapter two are similar in that way. 00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:22.959 So let's walk through these three scenes and let's discover the unique kind of rest, the unique kind of, the unique kind of assurance that we can have in our Redeemer's arms. 00:08:23.199 --> 00:08:26.480 So, scene one, Naomi has a wonderful plan for Ruth's life. 00:08:26.560 --> 00:08:28.079 Here's the first five verses. 00:08:28.319 --> 00:08:31.040 Naomi, we know wants rest for Ruth. 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:33.840 She wants things to go well for Ruth. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:36.480 And that rest doesn't just mean relaxation. 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:44.480 At this point, we we know that this biblical word rest goes so much deeper than just, you know, I hope you get to put your feet up once in a while. 00:08:44.639 --> 00:08:50.639 I hope you get to, you know, lie down in a recliner chair next to an in-ground pool and sip a mojito from time to time. 00:08:50.799 --> 00:08:53.440 This this kind of rest goes way deeper than that. 00:08:53.600 --> 00:09:01.200 This is a kind of rest that comes from a security, from an identity, from having what we need to flourish and thrive. 00:09:01.360 --> 00:09:04.080 That's what Naomi is talking about for rest. 00:09:04.159 --> 00:09:05.759 It's the kind or for Ruth. 00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:13.679 She wants a kind of rest that makes Ruth secure, that makes sure that Ruth has what it needs for things to go well. 00:09:13.840 --> 00:09:32.799 And the language that's used here in the first six verses, that it may go well with you, and then in verse six we see uh Ruth performing all that Naomi's commanded, it kind of echoes the language that we see in Deuteronomy chapter six, which the people of God, Israel, understood was sort of the heartbeat of God's law. 00:09:32.960 --> 00:09:35.360 Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one. 00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:37.120 That's right in Deuteronomy six. 00:09:37.360 --> 00:09:46.320 And right before that, we see God giving these commands to his people and saying, to perform these commandments so that it may go well with you. 00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:57.679 It's kind of like Naomi stepping into this role, saying to Ruth, if you do this, Ruth, in a way that God's people perform God's commandments and goes well for them, if you do this, Ruth, it's it's gonna go well for you. 00:09:57.759 --> 00:09:58.799 This is gonna work out. 00:09:58.960 --> 00:10:01.840 You're gonna thrive, you're gonna flourish. 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:03.440 And how is that gonna work? 00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:06.000 What's Naomi's wonderful plan for Ruth? 00:10:06.240 --> 00:10:09.759 She says this number one, I want you to wash and anoint yourself. 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.120 Number two, put on your cloak or put on your mantle. 00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:19.279 Number three, go and find where Boaz is lying down and lie down next to him and uncover his feet. 00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:23.279 And then part four, let him make the next move. 00:10:23.759 --> 00:10:35.360 Now, this is Naomi's wonderful plan, but for a sensitive reader, we see at least one significant way this can go sideways real quick. 00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:39.120 And this is a bit of the dramatic tension that's being introduced at this point. 00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:47.039 A reader who reads Naomi's plan, whether in the first century or maybe you're thinking it as we heard the reading, you're kind of going, where is this going? 00:10:47.679 --> 00:10:49.759 You know, so there's a bit of dramatic tension here. 00:10:49.840 --> 00:10:51.679 Where's how is this gonna play out for Ruth? 00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:53.360 What what what's Ruth going to do? 00:10:53.440 --> 00:10:55.840 What's Naomi asking her to do? 00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:03.600 Because there's a best case scenario that we see, beyond a best case scenario we see realized, but there's a worst case scenario as well. 00:11:03.840 --> 00:11:10.159 One biblical commentator says that Naomi's uh instructions to Ruth here are so ambiguous. 00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:12.480 There are there's so many different ways to interpret this. 00:11:12.639 --> 00:11:17.600 How is it that Ruth is supposed to understand what Naomi's asking her to do? 00:11:17.919 --> 00:11:30.240 See, because the worst case scenario here is that Naomi either could could intend or Ruth could misinterpret Naomi's instructions to mean, Ruth, here's the wonderful plan for your life. 00:11:30.399 --> 00:11:35.440 We're gonna secure rest, we're gonna secure provision, because you're going to go and seduce Boaz. 00:11:35.840 --> 00:11:37.279 That's what's gonna happen here. 00:11:37.440 --> 00:11:43.120 You're gonna go and you're gonna present yourself to him, you're gonna look desirable, you're gonna put on your fanciest dress. 00:11:43.360 --> 00:11:48.240 You're gonna go and wait until dark, disguise yourself, make sure no one sees you. 00:11:48.480 --> 00:12:03.919 You're gonna lie down next to him and you're gonna uncover his feet, which it's true is is a is a bit of a Hebrew, can be a Hebrew euphemism for, you know, uncover his lower half, his lower parts, start with his feet and you know keep uncovering. 00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:07.200 Uh and part four, you know, we'll we'll see where what develops. 00:12:07.279 --> 00:12:13.279 I mean, it doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to think where this could go so horribly wrong. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:15.679 Some interpreters take it this way. 00:12:15.840 --> 00:12:18.799 Some interpreters read Ruth and say, this is what's happening here. 00:12:18.879 --> 00:12:25.679 Ruth and Naomi are securing for themselves the rest they're looking for by taking matters into their own hands. 00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:34.960 And then they would point further, interpreters who would take this line of reasoning would point further and say, Look, in verse 7, Boaz has been very merry. tells her, you know, why don't you spend the night? 00:12:50.879 --> 00:12:55.039 And then before he sends her home, he says, Oh, it shouldn't be known that you were here. 00:12:55.200 --> 00:12:57.679 How about uh here, how about you take some barley? 00:12:57.759 --> 00:13:03.679 This will be a great alibi, and when people wonder where you were, he said, Oh, I was doing some what's happening in this text. 00:13:09.200 --> 00:13:20.879 That is not what's happening in this text for a number of reasons that we'll discuss, but the primary reason is this is this does not we see in headlines, what we see through the lens of something like a like the Me Too movement, which calls our attention rightly to the way men with influence and men with wealth and men with with be given to you by the Lord, the God of Israel. 00:18:20.559 --> 00:18:24.000 That he's talking about the faithfulness that Ruth has shown to Naomi. 00:18:24.559 --> 00:18:31.519 May a reward be given to you by the Lord the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge. 00:18:31.759 --> 00:18:37.119 And just as accurately we could translate that, under whose garment you've come to
