Salt systems are supposed to make pool care easier, so why do so many owners end up stuck at 100% output, watching pH climb, and dreading the next replacement salt cell bill? But I'm stepping back a little bit from that because I don't know what's going on with the salt cell manufacturing, but I've noticed with the with certain brands like Pentair and Jandy, even Hayward, that the cells aren't lasting the

Why Salt Cells Seem To Fail
SPEAKER_00I used to give the advice to get a larger cell, the Pentair, you know, the I Intellichlore cells lasted forever. I mean you can have one at a pool, it would last like seven or eight years with no problems. Same with the Hayward Aquarite cells. You would go back there and you could even read the label. The cell was so old and it was still functioning. But things have changed like everything else, and I wouldn't say that things are manufactured poorly. I think that maybe the rare earth metals used for salt cells is not as pure, or the manufacturing process is not as controlled as it used to be, or maybe the demand is too high, they're just having to make these things rapidly. Whatever the cause is, I'm not going to investigate it. You really can't invest in a very large salt cell and think that it's going to last the lifespan of the cell. In my opinion, they don't last the 10,000 hours or the 15,000 hours are rated for. And it's one of those things where the cost of these cells have really skyrocketed in price as well. It's one of those things where replacing the cell becomes almost counterproductive or prohibitive to customers. You know, if you have, let's say I'll just pick out a salt cell here and let me get the price, the retail price here. If you were to replace the Hayward T-cell 15, which is rated for 40,000 gallons, you're looking at like $1,100 for that retail price of that cell. So it does get kind of, you know, one of those conversations that's not comfortable with the customer when you have to sell them a new salt cell. Let's put it that way. It's not the most fun thing to do. So let me go over some sizing. And I do believe it's still logical to go oversized than just the exact size salt cell. And I'll explain that in a little more detail. You can you're not losing any money by going oversized. In fact, it may benefit you not running the salt cell at 100% output. There's a few other variables with the salt system that if you're running at 100% output, it could cause a couple problems. One, the pH will rise pretty rapidly in a salt water pool. And so if you're running it at 100% output for eight or ten hours a day, expect the pH to be pretty high in that pool. The second thing by running it 100% is that there's these white flakes blowback that happened with salt systems. It's kind of like skin flakes. It's not necessarily calcium by itself,
When Oversizing Still Makes Sense
SPEAKER_00but it could be a lot of different things that cause this. I am a firm believer that it's calcium and phosphates mixed together, causing this blowback. And so running it at 100% increases the pH and also increases the risk of some of this white flaky blowback from the salt system. I really wish someone would invent a post filter for the salt cell that will capture all this, and you just have like a tank that the salt cell goes into, and then you can capture all the flakes, and you that wouldn't be a problem going forward. I suppose you can plumb in something after the salt cell that would do that. And the sizing would be something to consider as far as if you could run it at 70 or 50 percent, that may be better to get a little larger salt cell in that case. So let's say you have a 15,000 gallon pool. We have a lot of options at that, you know, 14 or 15,000 gallon pool. You have plenty of options for sizing your salt cell, and depending on the system you go with. I'm still a big fan of the Jandy TrueClear, even though I'm kind of disappointed that the salt cells don't last as long as I want them to. They're still the most affordable salt cell because there's no electronics in them, much like the Hayward cell. The Pentair cells have electronics built in, and that raises the price of those cells. So I'm a big fan of Jandy for that reason. And the TrueClear cell is rated for 35,000 gallons, and so you know you can get one of those and it produces about 0.93 pounds of chlorine in 24 hours running at full speed. That's a pretty good amount of chlorine, that's like one
15,000-Gallon Pool Size Examples
SPEAKER_00pound of chlorine basically, or equivalent to about one gallon of 12.5% liquid chlorine. So it produces quite a lot of chlorine at 100% output. So if you have a 15,000 gallon pool, getting the Janine True Clear is perfect because you've actually have a cell that's double the size of your gallons. You can run that at 50%, and the salt cell replacement for that is actually affordable. There's actually a lot of knockoffs of the true clear on Amazon. I haven't tried one yet. I plan on ordering one soon to try it out. They're like $250 for these, or even less for these knockoff Jandy TrueClear cells. They get kind of mixed reviews, kind of hit and miss, but it's pretty affordable to get one of those versus getting the OEM one, which is like 600 or so, maybe 700. But again, still about half the price of the Hayward cell or Penthair cell when you go to replace it. You can also maybe get away with a Hayward Aquarite system with the T cell 9, which is rated for 25,000 gallons. So you're a little bit over that gallon. I wouldn't recommend getting the T cell 3, the Hayward Aquarite T cell turbocell 3, because they only produce about half a pound of chlorine a day, and that's rated for 15,000 gallons, which is the exact pool size that you have, and therefore you're gonna have to run it maybe at 80% or 90%, and then you have the side effects, which I mentioned the rising pH and the white flake blowback at a higher rate or more risk for that. So getting the T cell 9 is probably a good trade-off. I probably wouldn't recommend getting a T cell 15 for a 15,000 gallon pool. That's rated for 40,000 gallons, that produces 1.45 pounds of chlorine per day at full output, which you wouldn't need for that 15,000 gallon pool. You wouldn't need that much chlorine every day being injected into the pool basically. One system I should mention that has a really robust warranty would be the circuit pool salt cells. I believe it's a graduated seven-year warranty, so they're prorated over the years. And to me, this is the best warranty on the market today because you're you're getting guaranteed at least you know four or five years out of this cell. And then since since it's kind of on a curve, basically, or on a system where they're pro like tires, basically, if you get a warranty at Costco for tires, which I've done before, and you get a flat, you have to replace the tire, you'll actually prorate the new tire, and you'll save a lot of money by doing that. I don't know if any other tire place does that. Maybe they do it at other shops, but I know Costco does that, where if you have a tire rated for 50,000 or 70,000 miles and you're 20,000 miles in and you get a flat tire that they can't patch, they'll sell you a tire prorated for that amount. And that's
Circuit Pool Warranty And Output
SPEAKER_00kind of what Circuit Pool does with their salt systems or their salt cells. So one of those you can go, they have various systems, but I just have the RJ systems here. So if you had a 15,000 gallon pool, I definitely would get an RJ30 plus, which is for 30,000 gallons, and that makes about one and a half pounds of chlorine per day. And by the way, these systems produce a little bit more chlorine than the other systems. So even the RJ16 Plus, which is a 15,000 gallon pool-rated system, produces about 0.70 pounds of chlorine. So it does have a pretty good production rate. So you may even be able to get an RJ16 Plus, set it at 50%, and produce about 35.35 pounds of chlorine per day, which should be plenty for your size pool. The reason why you want to get a little larger salt system is because you may want to superchlorinate, because if you use the pool a lot and you have parties, you may want to turn this thing on and produce a lot more chlorine. So if you have the RJ30 plus, which is rated for 30,000 gallons, that produces 1.5 pounds of chlorine, this would be good to put in, you know, 100% output for 24 hours, and this will superchlorinate the pool without you having to buy more chlorine and add it to the pool. And the price difference between the RJ30 and the RJ16, also the price difference between the T cell 3 and the T cell 9 isn't really dramatic. So you can probably get a little larger cell and have that little built-in cushion, in my opinion. That would be kind of logical to do. I wouldn't steer you away from the Pentare and Hayward cell if that's what you're getting installed. If you're getting a new pool build and they're doing all Pentair equipment, you might as well go with the Pentare cell because it'll have better communication with the system, especially if you're going with full automation. I also recommend going with whatever brand system they're putting in. If they're putting in Hayward equipment, go with the Hayward cell. If they're putting in Jandy, go with the Jandy cell. But I would say if if you're upgrading a pool that's already existing and you're adding a salt system, I would steer you away from Hayward and Penter because of the price of the replacement cell. And Penta is having a lot of failures with their new assault cell at this point. I would just go with either Circuit Pool or Jandy, in my opinion. They make a really good system. And the salt cell replacements are more affordable with those two brands. You have to think about the cost of the system, and then you have to
Matching Brands And Future Cell Cost
SPEAKER_00think about talking to the customer three or four years, hopefully three or four years down the road, about replacing the salt cell and how that conversation is going to go. I mean, Penta, if you put a Pentair system in, the cell is going to be $1,200 or $1,300 just for the salt cell in some cases, which is a big hurdle, a big psychological hurdle to convince the customer that spending $1,200 for the salt cell is better than buying a 50-pound bucket of trichlor tablets and calling it a day, which a lot of people will move away from the salt cell after three or four years because they don't want to buy a new cell, basically, or a salt system, they'll move away from that because the salt cell is too expensive for them. And they just rather would just get a bucket of tablets and call it a day. So a lot of times when you are selling these systems or when you're buying one, you want to think of the future. You don't want to just think of the now and the price. If if a Hayward system is on sale and you say $400, maybe that's good, but when you have to replace that salt cell, it's not so good. I would just stick with maybe Jandy and Circuit Pool if you're having a salt cell in installed after the fact and kind of stay away from Pentair and Hayward because of the things I mentioned here. And again, I wouldn't recommend going overkill. If you have a 20,000 gallon pool, I would get probably a cell rated for 35 or 40,000 gallons. You know, the Hayward T cell 15 is 40,000 gallons. If they're putting in a Hayward automation, get that sell. But you can easily get the uh circuit pool RJ45 plus, which is rated for 45,000 gallons, or the RJ30 plus, which is rated for 30,000. That gives you an extra 10,000 gallons with the with the second one, and an extra 25,000 gallons with the RJ45. You really don't need that huge of a cushion. Like I mentioned, since the salt cells aren't made like they used to be made back in the 2000s or the early two, I guess we're still in the 2000s. I should say back in 2010 to 2020, or even 2005 to 2020, I felt like the salt cells were much more
Avoid Overkill With Simple Chlorine Math
SPEAKER_00robust and better made than they are now. And since we're moving into an era of more or less the cells not making it to the 10,000 hours, even if you have a warranty on a cell, a lot of times they'll break right after the warranty period. Except of course for the circuit pool warranty, which is a seven-year uh prorated warranty, which is I think great considering the salt cells don't last as long. You would want to go with a company that stands behind their product, and they're definitely one that stands behind their product. But I wouldn't go crazy, and you know, if you have a Penter system being put in, I definitely would not get like an Intellichlore IC60 that sell it the replace that is like $1,600 or $1,800. It's pretty crazy, and that's rated for 60,000 gallons. So if you have a 20,000 gallon pool, that's way, way overkill. You really don't need that many, that much, that much. I can't say this, you don't need that many pounds of chlorine in the pool per day, really, under normal operation. Let's just say that you're at five parts per million. You test it on a Monday. During regular cool weather, you know, not too much heat, you're probably losing one or two parts per million per day. So you're only gonna need about 0.25 pounds of chlorine per day to replace that. Now in the summer, you're probably losing about two to three parts per million per day. So you're gonna need probably about 0.40 pounds of chlorine per day in the summertime. So if you look at, if you go back to the production that I was saying earlier, you know, if you have, let's say you just have an RJ16 for your 15,000 gallon pool, which is rated for 15,000 gallons, that makes 0.7 pounds of chlorine per day. So you're gonna probably have that system running at about 60% output in the summertime to get about 0.4 pounds of chlorine. Now, if you have the Jandy true clear, which produces 0.93 pounds per day, you would run that at 50%, and that would give you just enough chlorine to kind of replenish any kind of part per million loss that you're losing. So you don't really need 1.25 pounds of chlorine per day or 1.5 pounds. You just need enough chlorine being produced by the system to replenish the lost parts per million, so you can maintain that five parts per million per day. And there's no need to have a system that's making two pounds of chlorine per day. That's overkill, and I've been at salt pools where the chlorine level is above 20 parts per million because they have it at 100% output. It's a smaller pool and it's just producing a ton of chlorine. So kind of get the thinking out of your head that you you need a lot of chlorine in the pool. You really don't. The only reason you're gonna need to have one pound per day produced is if you're shocking the pool kind of with the system. If you're getting ready for a pool party, you want to bring the chlorine level up, then you would definitely want to have the ability to increase the output to a higher percentage or a higher amount of pounds of chlorine easily, and that's why I always like to go with a little larger cell. So I'll just end with this. If you're going, if you have a 15,000 gallon pool, I would say the RJ30, the circuit pool RJ30 plus is perfect. It is for 30,000 gallon rating, it produces 1.5 pounds of chlorine. You can set this thing to about 30 or 40 percent during the summer. That'll be making half a pound of chlorine per day. And then if you're having a pool party, set it to 100%, run it for that day, it'll make 1.5 pounds or 1 pound of chlorine. Again, this is all based on 24 hours of runtime. So you have to kind of understand that if you're running the pool 12 hours a day, if you're at 100% output at 12 hours a day, you're gonna get 0.75 pounds of chlorine being made. And if you're running it at if you're running it for 12 hours and you have it at 50%, you're gonna get maybe about 0.4 pounds of chlorine. It's all based on a 24-hour runtime. So remember that the number, the chlorine pounds, is based on 24 hours of output, not just 12 hours or 8 hours. So you have to subtract that the time you're running it. But I would say that the for a 15,000 gallon pool, the RJ30 plus 30,000 rated is plenty to lower the percentage down and still replace the parts of million you're losing per day. I would say the RJ16, which is rated for 15,000 gallons, you're kind of pushing it close to the needle there as far as runtime and output percentage. And so going with a little bigger salt cell, in my opinion, is better. You know, if you if you have a Hayward system, I would go with the T cell 9 or the T cell 15, 25,000 gallon or 40,000 gallon rated versus the T cell 3, which is just the size pool you have. And that's the logic behind getting a little larger salt cell. You have more chlorine that you can produce. Running it for shorter time at a lower percentage versus running it at 100% for a longer time, they get the same amount of chlorine produced in the pool.
