The Soul's Work Podcast

Shame and Shaming in Social Justice Movements (with Andrea)

Janice Ho

In this episode, Janice and guest Andrea discuss shame and shaming in social justice movements and spaces, including:

  • Common ways that shame shows up in our activism work
  • Is shaming ever okay? Is it effective in moving people toward action?
  • How do we react or cope when we are steeped in shame?
  • How is shaming politicians/institutions different from shaming people?
  • How can we take care in not shaming others in a way that hurts the movement?

This conversation is not meant to be prescriptive. Rather, it is meant to open up a not-often-discussed topic in our social justice spaces and think through its nuanced layers.

Bio: Andrea (she/they) is a poet and writer from Toronto who has performed with various organizations, including Unity Charity, JAYU and Lakeshore Arts. This statement does not encompass all they are but her love of the arts always propels her towards self expression, liberation and using the written word to connect with others and the world.
