We will explore the simple steps on how to turn the traditional learning experience into one founded on practices of the PYP in 10 to 20 minute episodes. The PYP is part of the International Baccalaureate program, which focuses on developing the whole child by allowing students to create their own meaning from learning. In the past six months, I have visited a lot of schools through official IB workshops, independent workshops, and curriculum development. One repeating theme that came from these encounters is this simple question:
What does a PYP classroom look and feel like in practice?
On the surface it seems like an easy question to answer. But, as you unravel the layers, you discover that there are many parts to making a PYP classroom come to life. Here are the two main parts that I have identified: the physical space and the independent space.
