The Parallel Four Book Three
A Chronicle of Friendship, Love, War, Adventure, and Destiny
Introduction
If you’d told me, back in the winter of 1956, that I’d end up tangled in a lifelong adventure with a tall Swede, a girl who could shoot straighter than most blokes I knew, and a childhood mate who still owes me a fiver—I’d have laughed, offered you a fag, and assumed you’d gone soft in the head.
But here we are.
Four of us. Born on the same day. Two in a fog-drenched slice of East London, and two in the snowy fairy-tale backwoods of Sweden, where the trees are tall, the winters longer, and the locals don’t blink at a reindeer in the road. Coincidence, you’d say. Fate, if you’re into that sort of thing. Me? I reckon the universe just likes a bit of drama.
Johan and I grew up dodging chimney soot and truant officers. Vinka and Marlin were raised on rye bread, common sense, and whatever mysterious Viking spirit runs through the Swedish bloodstream. Somehow, through a series of accidents, coincidences, and the occasional government intervention, our lives collided. Then stuck. Like chewing gum to a boot.
Together we’ve survived school, love, war, heartbreak, diplomatic cock-ups. We’ve sailed oceans, ridden too fast, drunk too much, loved too fiercely, and trusted each other far more than was advisable.
It hasn’t all been smooth sailing. Literally—we once tried crossing to Norway in a boat designed for pond ducks. But somehow, through it all, we stayed parallel. Connected. Aligned in that peculiar way only old friends can be. The kind of friends who can sit in silence for an hour and still feel like something important’s been said.
This book isn’t a history lesson. It’s not even a warning, though it probably should be. It’s just our story. A bit mad in places. A bit sad in others. But real.
So if you’re still with us—brew a cup of tea, or pour yourself something stronger if you’re of the Scandinavian persuasion. You’re about to meet The Parallel Four.
And I promise—we’re worth the trouble.
