Cait speaks to abolitionist and criminologist David Scott about why he hopes for a world without prisons. 

Then she interviews Are Hoidal, former warden of Halden Prison in Norway, about a different approach to imprisonment that seems to yield better results.

Almost half of adults sent to prison for a crime are reconvicted within a year of release. That's why people like criminologist David Scott are calling for an end to the prison system. 

David Scott:

The truth is sociologists for more than a century have been saying to us there is no relationship  between crime rates and prison rates. 

Cait Macleod:

But across the north sea in Norway there's a unique prison yielding better results that might just offer a glimpse of how we could reimagine the prison system. 

Are Hoidal:

Everyone who visit Halden prison thinks this look more like a campus than a prison.
