Unknown Speaker :

whichever you want. I'm okay with it, Bill. Thanks for having me, man.

Unknown Speaker :

Well, it's great to have you on and having spent some time you know, obviously with MLS and some time in Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. Boy, it's a it's an interesting market. So we're really excited about going through this with you as well. I'm going to try to keep it to around 30 minutes. I've got more questions and time probably but you know, I think everybody that listens to inside soccer is going to be really glued to their device here as we go through this. So welcome and first and foremost, tell us how you got involved in all this and and was Southern Legion.

Unknown Speaker :

Oh wow bill, it's really a very long story that a couple people told we should probably make a movie about. I guess it started back in when the Miami fusion was around. I used to go with my dad to to the fusion games and we lived in Miami we drove up to Fort Lauderdale, which is you're pretty familiar with it. It's about 45 to one hour away from from where I was living at least. And we made that Trek and and unfortunately, MLS was different back then. The only Didn't have deep pockets like some of the other owners did. And then they have to close the team down. You know, I'm trying to make it as brief as possible. So that was a heartbreak for me, you know, I'm in here I was going to college and stuff and, and my team was taken away from me in that last year was the best year that they had. So at first I didn't even want to know about MLS for the next couple of years. I was like, No, I'm not watching MLS I'm not watching any other sport except that one. But, you know, there was something in me that said, you know, we know there were a lot of people there that you know, that like soccer, you know, let me get online and you know, that's when you know, the internet started and while I didn't start playing, you know, social media wasn't big yet. So you have to look stuff up. I think I looked I found a website for the Miami realtors. I think you're familiar with that name. And, and it was just the name you know, and and I saw that the They were getting together the guys they would get together for to watch amateur games and in just about that, that time I think was like 2006 or something like that. There was a new Miami FC that was starting down in here in Miami. And so we started getting together to watch those games. But our goal was always to bring Major League Soccer to Miami, or to South Florida. And so, you know, so many years went by, we decided to do a campaign with, you know, to try to get attention for Miami again. So we started getting people to write emails to Don Garber. And I guess the campaign well, because he answered us and he said, Okay, I'll meet you guys. in Fort Lauderdale. They had something for Major League Soccer back then. Over here, I think, I don't know if it was a well, I don't remember exactly what it was. But he met with us We got about 100 people that that showed up need a little more. And he basically told us, okay, we see that you guys are here, but we need more passion, we need you guys to get ownership, you know, and and show up to these, you know, smaller games and, you know, make a movement happen and we'll look at Miami again. And so that's what we did our president will you'll go, uh, you know he he was basically the mastermind behind all this he he decided he looked on the list of Forbes. And he's like, all right, all these guys are in Florida. We're going to email all these guys all these years, and we're going to try to get their attention so that we can bring a team to Miami. And and that's how I started we started sending emails out. We got a few people responded. One of them was Steven Ross, the owner of the dolphins who was interested for a little brief period. There was another guy he's a Croatian Gosh, I forget his name, but he's an owner of Premiership teams. He also responded and my fellow cloud he responded. And the other team kind of lost interest his his years went by but Monticello was always, always on top of that, and I don't know if you remember, there was the Barcelona the we almost had a Barcelona team or the ownership of the Barcelona a team that was going to start a team I think it was back in 2008. And in my silver platter was behind that but guess the same times a little bit difficult. And they decided to pull the plug as we were promoting sending out you know, flyers and, you know, every soccer event we were out there, you know, we've made a scarf and stuff and, and then, you know, but it didn't happen and we were again we were heartbroken and and then But we didn't want to give up you know, and my sister told us guys, you know, this didn't work out you know, but but don't count me out. And so

Unknown Speaker :

Julio remaining contact with my fellow and he kept on sending an email and some don't forget Don't forget and and so a couple a few years later they kept in touch and we'll just send them an email saying, you know, Beckham beckons coming and he's got a contract and you know, and and in that contract he can get a team for with a discount. And my seller responded and I said, Okay, give me a meeting with him. And of course, he said that as a joke. Because he really was like, okay, man, here's a billionaire. I don't have you know, I there's no way I can contact the guy. But sure enough, they got in contact. You know, everybody knows at some party with JLo and Marc Anthony and and that's how it started and and to make everything shorter. There's been so many hours obstacles to this team. It took so long because it's you know, Miami is a very difficult city to, to do anything. You know, I hate to say it's kind of like a banana republic the way that they run this place. But so it's taken so long for this to happen. We finally got a couple of games in, I was able to go to LA to watch that the first game ever and was looking forward to watching the team a lot harder. What would it is now I guess, inter Miami Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, and I'm in and this happened the situation that we're in now. And, and again, we're paralyzed just like I was telling you off off off of the microphones that it's like it's been such a mission to get this team started. You know, they spent so much money on building the stadium on getting players and they're still talking about bringing money more players. And and yet they're they're still going strong. I mean, they have a good ownership group. I think this is a team that's going to stick around for a while I'm crossing my fingers here, but because you know how it is done here in Miami out how we've done that through so many teams, and none of them seemed this seemed to stick and but I think this one's This one's the one that's going to be here to stay.

Unknown Speaker :

Well, I don't disagree with you at all. And, you know, I'll just chime in a little bit one. I think everyone who's listening knows that. The David Beckham is part of your ownership group. I had the pleasure of being around David a little bit and I do mean a little bit when he was coming on to when he was at Real Madrid and we were talking to him at Ag and doing some Academy stuff with him. I did some work for him and has spent some time around him. We've got a ton of respect for the person that he is, especially in and around Kids, it's just incredible. But also, you know, I've seen David Beckham jerseys. And every stop around the world I've ever been in his reaches is incredible. I don't think you get the team down there at this point in time anyway, without his involvement, and I think with his involvement, he needed a town or a city like Miami to sort of match his iconic status around the world. And, you know, so far there's been a lot of excitement and a lot of, you know, the high end sort of coverage of everything. And I know and I know, you know, that there's a lot of work underneath all of that to make this happen. But my next question is when when David first arrived, because you you, you are right, and then we could we could do a half a dozen shows on the complexity. The Miami soccer market. I mean, it may be the most diverse market even more so than New York or LA. As far as fandom is concerned and people's allegiances. And, and their time in Miami, even people are coming and going all the time. And they come with their home teams and they leave with their home team. So when David did arrive, did you have a chance to sit down with him and sort of walk through what this market was really like? And and did that help?

Unknown Speaker :

Oh, unfortunately, you know, he's a very difficult person to get ahold of. I've met him like, I don't know, a dozen times possibly he's probably tired of seeing my, my ugly mug, but, but I think we never actually got to talk that much. I've been able to speak with a monkey and we've had a couple beers and stuff, you know, but we haven't been able to sit down and talk you know, more profound about, you know, what Miami's is about. Sure. And um, you know, and you just don't have that access, you know

Unknown Speaker :

there's a lot of people you got to get through to get to them. Yeah.

Unknown Speaker :

So you know, I got to speak to him a couple of times because you know I've been at events or whatever where he's been at and so he recognizes me and you know, calls me uncle Edwards. I think that's pretty cool. And I think cuz Julio and I were the first people that he saw when he came to Miami because Monticello told us gave us a call this until this be FSU stadium at this time. And so I even have a painting that one of my friends did for me of David Beckham that he signed. And so it was like, we were the first guys I think that he got to see the first supporters I guess you could say, you're in Miami before the team even started. So so you know, there's been the opportunity to speak to him, but a like you said, there's always somebody around And they're pushing him to continue, you know, doing what he's doing, which is, you know, he's very good with people. He's got so much patience. It's incredible because if people are really, you know, they throw themselves on him and you know, the women and everything and, and he's always smiling and he's always got a great attitude. I've never seen it. You never see the guy angry. But he does have like you were saying people around him that protect them. So it's very difficult to get much of a conversation out of him. And he hasn't he I know that he's going to sit down with some of the supporters. Eventually when he's when he's down here, but he hasn't done that yet. They've told us he would

Unknown Speaker :

well I have a lot of confidence he'll he'll do a good job. And the only only thing I would share is once I watched him in LA, working for some with some kids from or for UNICEF, and you're absolutely right. I mean, he's on a schedule and his people keep him on the schedule and he does a great job. He's got a great demeanor about him. But he just turned around and said I'm staying and I kept going we have to leave because I'm not leaving. And you know, I don't know how much longer he spent on that field than he was supposed to but you couldn't drag him away from teaching kids how to play soccer and have experience it was just it was just truly was wonderful and still sticks me today. So with that at all as a backdrop, let's go to Southern Legion now. So you've got an iconic ownership group, you've got a powerful local group that people know of. How's it been from a supporters group standpoint of getting members if that's what you're gonna call them and, and growing the support for the club? From the time you sort of started until the time we stopped was a quarantine. How has Miami reacted to Southern Legion?

Unknown Speaker :

I did very well. I mean, every we're pretty, you know, thanks. Well, we were the first one. So everybody, you know, we're pretty well known, at least with major league soccer and in South Florida. We've got Believe it or not a lot of former strikers supporters have are part of this. This group, you know, Peter Brown, which is the guy that I have a podcast show with he he was the guy that made the website for the Miami realtors back in the day. And Miami realtors eventually became the southern Legion. And we changed the name because I think it was Marcello said you know, the ultras name kind of sounds a little, you know, because you know, how the ultra is, I guess, in Europe are thought of is, you know, being, you know, destructive or whatever. So, he kind of gave us that thing and we're like, oh, yeah, wouldn't be a bad idea to change the name. So there was another group that supported Miami FC back in the day, and that was called Southern Legion. We're trying to come up with all What else I do, let me just call one of these guys because I knew who they were and I was like to see if they if it's okay to use that name because it's, you know, Southern we are in the south and Legion because there's a whole bunch of it. So he said, Yeah, man, take it, go for it. He's like, whatever, you know, oh, I'll be part of the group too. So, so that's that's how the southern Legion started and we told myself that we were rebranding and he thought it was a great idea you love the name and he even said he was gonna dress up as a as a legionnaire or whatever. For the first game. I don't know if he was going to do it, actually. But But that was the that's what he told us. And it was actually I got it we they made some posters with David Beckham hat whole, you know, having to the legionnaire uniform on and so I thought that was really cool. It just painted on but it's pretty cool. And, and so, you know, that's kind of how it started. As far as people supporting there's there's always people who I mean we're on all the social medias we got our website we're on YouTube as well. So we're that's where we put like some of our songs so people get get get familiar with them and so we're out there and people always reaching out always trying to be part of it and unfortunately it is this whole situation that we're in right now has has kind of put a you know a damper into all this because we had all this momentum going we have that we got to go to the LA game and and in we were ready for for the first game and at locker stadium or into my MC and whenever they want to call it now, for me, I still call it a Lockhart stadium because, you know, la carte, that's what Lockhart was and you know, it's like a sentimental thing for me at this point. But But yeah, so that put a little, a little Oh, no, it held us back from from that great momentum that we had And we're trying to build it up. We're trying to get excitement for this new tournament that's going to start on on July 8. And in which we're just trying to get, you know, amped up for that and see what we could do if we could do a watch party. But you know how difficult it is now, because there's many places they don't want to have big crowds. It's on a Wednesday though, so I don't think the cars gonna be that big but but still, people are going to show up a lot of people are going to call in sick or you know if the if they're working, but But yeah, we'll see. Let's see what happens if we can get that watch party going. And we'll see we got to get this amped up again.

Unknown Speaker :

Yeah, it's gonna take a lot of work. So So question back to to Miami for a second. When you're out when you're out talking to people and you're describing, you know, the supporters group to people who don't belong. Do you get a sense that people are so porta because of David, because you know, it's a Miami team now? Or is this still gonna take a lot of work over, you know, the course of many years to convince people that this really is their team as well?

Unknown Speaker :

Well, I think a lot, like you said, has to do with David Beckham. A lot of people know about this team. Now, there were other teams that we had in the past, where, you know, people you know, they've here all you have is the Miami team, but they wouldn't put very much attention to it. He's such a world class class star that everybody knows who he is, they know, he's bringing a team here. They've heard about it. So it's so much easier now. But back in the day, it was like, you know, trying to talk to people convince them to go to the games to support a team with you know, players that you know, really, you know, that they were they were professional players, but they weren't famous players or players that have, you know, that that that anybody's ever heard of. So now this is a this is a different, a different thing. It's a different monster and, and that's why I think this team is going to survive with how the other teams weren't able to survive. Because, you know, there's there's deep pockets involved. There's name recognition so it's I think they've got everything, everything ready everything all the everything lined up for this to be a success.

Unknown Speaker :

Everything except the pandemic. Um, yeah, and so you know, and I know we're not medical experts here but what's your fear? if if if this doesn't go away this year and other than Orlando that's that's the end of soccer and MLS as we know it for 2020 I mean, let's, how much how much heart burn is that create for you?

Unknown Speaker :

Ah, but for me personally.

Unknown Speaker :

At least I was able to go to the LA game. I wanted to go to the DC game. But I was like, No, you know what, let me just, you know, save up my money, save up my time and prepare for the for the home game. And we were like two days away and they cancelled it. So, wow, you know, I've just I'm so used to being heartbroken, you know, with Miami soccer that that is, you know, it's just just another thing you know, you know, I'm rolling with the punches at this page, you know, but I don't know it's, it's, it's been difficult to deal with this. A lot of people are, you know, a lot of people lost their jobs and stuff like that. So this sports is a distraction from you know, from for that for me, you know, until the German league started a few weeks back, there was no sports for how many I think three months or something pretty close.

Unknown Speaker :

Yes.

Unknown Speaker :

It how difficult has it been? I mean, I couldn't I can't believe we survived. You know, I'm such a sports freak that that you know, I need To watch something you know, and and what we started doing was playing video games and watch people on on Twitch, do you know play FIFA or whatever, you know, that keeps you a little bit entertained, but it's not the same, you know? So I hadn't watched and watched the German soccer in such a long time I used to be I was in the army back in the day and I was stationed in Germany and close to Bremen. So my team was verta Bremen. And right now they're close to being relegated. So, you know, I, I was watching those games and I'll say, Come on, guys, you need to win. I can't believe you guys are gonna go down and looks like they're gonna go down. But you know, there was we need sock. We need that excitement for people to get through these difficult times, I think.

Unknown Speaker :

Yeah, no, I look, I agree. I think there's a lot of people that needed diversion. You know, those of us who have made a living within sports, obviously need to go back to work. Before our wives kick us out, and

Unknown Speaker :

you know, it's it's really.

Unknown Speaker :

And I don't want to, I don't want to undersell all the work everyone's done. But it's really sad in a sense to me personally that, you know, I do think Miami deserves an MLS team and I do believe that MLS can succeed there. But I do believe also that it takes a group like you have now it's probably taken some time, but for the league to grow and develop and for people like David Beckham to actually have played in the league and now become a part of an ownership group in the league. Those things I think all had to evolve to get to where we are today. And boy, it just felt like you know, other than this, look, the struggles to build a stadium exists in every city. We were talking to some people from Austin on Tuesday, you know, and with all the land in Texas, they still had issues trying to find the right location as well. I mean, it's just That's just part of that process. And it really is a difficult process to get a stadium built today. So put that on the side. And other than that, it felt like everything was coming together in a meaningful way, in a proper way and a lot of excitement in a city that, you know, has not sort of coalesced around one soccer team yet. So, you know, hopefully we'll get through this quickly. And, you know, I think if the team goes out as my personal opinion, they win one more game and they lose if you know, meaning they're competitive, then I think, you know, you guys's jobs gonna be a little bit easier and you're gonna have a heck of a lot more fun being part of Southern Legion than if, you know, they're not winning, that's for sure.

Unknown Speaker :

Yeah, that's for sure. I'm, I'm looking forward to actually being in the stadium and supporting we, I mean, we had all these big plans, we had a tifo set. Everything was ready. We had our songs and you know, if the group was was, you know, excited for For what was coming, but unfortunately, nice things happen and you know, at least we have everything ready for whenever the first game has finally materializes. Yep,

Unknown Speaker :

so so a couple remaining questions here and we'll go a little bit quicker on these ones but I think people are interested in these types of discussion items and you guys are right there on the front line. So So I also love this. So first question is, do you have good relationships with ownership in the front office?

Unknown Speaker :

Yeah, we do.

Unknown Speaker :

They have a point of contact that you know, we all talk to we they give us messages all the time. We recently had one of our members had an accident and we hit his head and unfortunately he had his re we did like a GoFundMe for him because You know, he had to stop working and he couldn't make his rent and stuff like that. So, the team, the team really supported that, that movement and we, we did like a parade for him once he recovered, he got out of the hospital. And, you know, so we, I think the team filmed that, and we put it on social media. It was really exciting. I don't know 30 cars or something, you know, Hawking for him and I can tell from seeing his face. He got very excited and, and the team even gave him a signed jersey, one of the players gave it to him. So it was, you know, they, they do a lot with with the community. They've also given back, they've done food drives. So they're very connected at first, you know, they were a little slow coming off the starting blocks, I guess, you know, because it's the team just started. They were getting the front office done, but right now they're every day. There's some it's some type of information. They're sending us You know, they got whatsapp group where we're connected and so they'll send us information and this is what's happening and whenever whenever, you know, they, they're telling us when the players are going to head to Orlando, all these things, you know, they're keeping us informed. So I think that's wonderful that that they're doing that that there's that openness you know, with with the supporters and that's a part of what they need to do to gain more followers I think.

Unknown Speaker :

I totally agree. I you know, in every, every situation I've been in with teams or leagues, you've got to have that connection with the fans. You've got to be able to communicate with them. You've got to be able to take criticism and adjust. You got to keep them in mind with everything, every decision you make. Is this going to help you know, provide value for existing fans and possibly attract new fans. So it sounds like they've they're finding their lane there if you will, and that's a great thing. So, by all means, keep up that communication because that's, that's really, really critical. And it's too easy in a front office situation to sort of create an island or a moat around you where you're not sure what's going on. And because it's tough, sometimes it's tough sitting at a table and having fans tell you that you're not very good at what you do. And people don't want to hear that. But

Unknown Speaker :

that's true either. And then we're going to be doing that all the time, we're going to be saying, This player is not good, whoever, but like I said earlier, they need to roll with the punches and just, you know, and take it and, you know, dismiss it as they have to dismiss it, because sometimes we're a little bit too passionate. But some of the things that we say I'm sure you know, will actually help the team improve, without a doubt without

Unknown Speaker :

a doubt. So a couple more quick ones. They're just more curiosity than anything else. Do you guys try to model yourself after other clubs or other leagues Is there someone you look at and you go Hey, that's, that's who we Want to be are you really is this really organic and something you're creating yourself?

Unknown Speaker :

You know we really haven't tried to follow anybody maybe the sons of Ben back in the day when we first started because they have the started just about the same time that we did except they got a team way before we did we've just had so much patience and so many teams have started before us but yet our organization started years before you know, some of these teams even existed. So but maybe them at first and but we've only we've really just done our thing I think now there's there's some other supporters group has also, you know, falling into Miami so we're trying, I think to follow with the 30 to 50 T's doing an LA with la FC. Trying to get all those groups together. To sing is one you know, it's it's difficult because there's different ways of thinking different ways that people want to do. Their supporters groups. Some people are concentrated on the way that Argentinians do support routines. Others concentrate on the way the English do their supporters groups. We're kind of in the middle we have a little bit of everything is that English songs, Spanish songs. But you know, South Florida is very, there's a lot of Hispanic people here. So it's, it's most of the songs are in Spanish. And that's what's really interesting about you know, about South Florida that there's so many Latin people down here that you insist on seeing in Spanish. And I don't know there's something about Spanish and you know, I don't know if you've noticed, but the dictionaries like twice the size of the of the English dictionary, so they've got so many words it is this there's some something about that language that it makes it easier to make songs.

Unknown Speaker :

I've noticed, trying to make English songs and it's difficult

Unknown Speaker :

Yeah, that's a great approach, because it is a very diverse market. And I think there's probably more native Spanish speakers and not. And so, you know, allowing the fans to express themselves in a way that's comfortable for them to express themselves, I think is really smart rather than trying to force him to do something that's not natural or uncomfortable for him. So I think in a city like Miami, that's a actually a pretty critical sort of decision you guys are making in how you treat the different fans. So that's, that's a positive for sure. So I'm running near the end here. But I got to ask this question. What do you think you do better than other support groups?

Unknown Speaker :

You know, I think we're, I think we're very original. There's I don't think there's any supporters group that's like, it's just not just the into the language because I'm sure that you know, there's there's supporters in Los Angeles. and certain other areas also have Spanish songs to them. But what we're trying to do now is create unique songs that nobody else uses. We're not going to be singing we love you, we love you, like everybody else does in the league. We're going to be singing original, you know that we've got a lot of original Spanish songs that nobody thinks, you know, in the world. So we're going to be very different than than anything else that anybody's ever seen in Major League Soccer. And that's why we're heartbroken because we didn't get the chance to have a very first game and for people to see us on TV, but we're still practicing and everybody is gonna, you know, they're going to notice Miami, that's for sure.

Unknown Speaker :

That's fantastic. So two more quick ones. Any shenanigans or anything you want to share with our listeners that you've been through in the last couple of years that people would would shake their head and go, Oh my gosh, I can't believe that.

Unknown Speaker :

Oh, man. So many of so many of my anecdotes. Well, you know, I can tell you why when, you know, one of those times that I had a beer with a david beckham, like I was talking with him about. I told him, You know what, my dad doesn't like you. And I was like, Oh, he was like, Why? Why does he like he was like, that's from Ecuador. And he's like, he just touched his head. He's like, and I'm like, you score that goal that eliminated equity from the World Cup and in the in the quarterfinals, and he just doesn't want he just doesn't like you. And he's like, oh, we'll tell him I'm sorry. But it was a very good goal. He told me I was like, Oh, it was a good goal. Yeah. But, you know, he's like, Well, I'll tell him Well, next time I'll make it up them. And actually, he was going to record something. Tell me my apologizing with my dad, to my dad about it, but we didn't get around to it. You know, he's just he was just so busy. He's like, remind me before I leave so I can make that video for you. And it didn't happen.

Unknown Speaker :

Yeah, he's a great guy for sure. Anything and we did. Ask that we should ask anything you want to share that we haven't brought up?

Unknown Speaker :

Yeah, basically I, you know, just I want everybody that that lives in Miami or the world because I think this is going to be the team that the world is going to, to support not just Latin America, a lot of people are you know, the they call Miami, the capital of Latin America. It's very true because everything is like everybody's always on from Ecuador. My parents are from Ecuador. And everybody in Ecuador is always saying I want you know, I want to go to Miami. They don't say La anymore. They don't say New York, everybody's concentrated in Miami. So I think this is going to be the team of the world's inter Miami is going to be the one that everybody supports kind of like around Madrid or Barcelona that everybody's wearing those those jerseys. Now you get to see that everywhere. I mean, I'm surprised every time that I walk outside, I see somebody with the hat on. You know, I think that's that's really exciting because you didn't see that before you know this. It's The guys, you know, it's David Beckham's team. So he's selling a lot, but I did want to mention, if anybody wants to follow the southern Legion, go to Southern Legion, miaa calm and we're on all the social media platforms, YouTube if you want to learn some of our songs, and and that's basically it.
