So this week, it was time for a breakaway with a capital B. I need to break from work. Season One of this podcast was wrapping up. It was a great time to get away. So a road trip was in order. Thanks to our friend, Charlie, a group of us were able to get come together this weekend and hit the road for some of the best intentionally and worst accidentally breweries in Central Oregon. Thanks to Charlie and Zach for sharing today on the drive back. And my apologies to Josh, who is with us every step of the way. But he was driving back to Seattle when we started recording. Next time, my friend next time, more than anything, this trip was about the importance of connections. The beer was great. Most of the time, the companionship even more. So the freedom to be without a schedule, incredible. The ability to step back from roles such as coach, Father, administrator husband, that was tremendous and needed for I believe all of us. A ton happened on this trip that's not going to be discussed here. Just a short, unplanned discussion at the end of the experience. Nothing about the waterfall, or me almost taking a header into the river when I slipped out a rock. Just the beer. I hope you enjoy. Alright, we're returning from Bend, Oregon, after going to Hood River and bend on a little brewery excursion in the post COVID world. So the big question to start with today is best beer worst beer and where you won't ever go again. All right. Who wants to go first? best beer. Yes. The old Brune at frame in Hood River. The worst beer was anything that I had at Delphi. Also allopath l apothecary had a really good series of sours. Cherry was the best I think for me. Good. What was so what made the old ruin so good. Thank you. It had to do with the complexity of it. It was a little bit I wouldn't say necessarily on the sweet side, but he got a little of that element to it and then it had like a good pucker to it in the back end that I thought was pretty balanced. How did it compare to the crux old Bruin? The crux actually wasn't a bad one either. In all honesty, I remember that one being a little bit more sweet though. Which in a sour I don't I don't really want the big sweet flavor. Gotcha. How about free jar? Oh, fast beer. I don't know if there's the best beer but the one that I really enjoyed was the Japanese lager kind of caught me off kind of caught me by surprise. And I think it would be like up there but I thought it was kind of a nice crisp. good tasting beer. Had the cat unlimited Jasmine to it or something better. nice, clean beer. Really enjoyed that one. Where'd you get that one? That was at free. I thought they had the overall I thought that was probably the best selection of the weekend. Worst beer obviously all that kolsch from double about. How is this wrong? As bad as bad beer? I'm still trying to figure out if it was like soapy lines or something. Yeah, at two places you had it but can't you can't be from both places. So I thought the other beer the buckless from the apothecary. I thought that was really good. Glad that we grabbed the last three bottles of it. I thought that was really solid and I liked I'd like just trying all the different beers we have there. Have a nice selection. waiting to go there. Yeah, but that place is, you know we heard about that place years ago. It was out of a house in I don't know sisters. I think it was was it in sisters Oregon at the time. So and now it's in Bend. I'm going to go that the best beers we had did come from from and I didn't order any of them. I was on a ordering streak. Okay, lessons learned was don't ever order a cult cult, basically from anywhere that's not using a German yeast. So I think I'm gonna go with God. It's kind of a toss up. I read the beers that I added the beers I got. I really did like that. Crux old, dope rune. And I really like Charlie's lager, Japanese lager. And the loser of the week. weekend is obviously Yes, double mountain. Because I got two drinks into my my beverage it was done. How about see here what other we sit with to ferment in Hood River as well. And we went to shoot just shoots in Bend. Anything that stuck out at either of those places that for you guys. I'm trying to remember what was the wasn't the family tree. It was the other sour that this shoots had. Oh, that was that was one of the better ones that we had the weekend. I will try to think of the name of that one. That was the that was that. That was a cherry It was. It was nice. Yeah, they're purple. Exactly. Now remember? Remember that one? That was a good one. And, you know, overall, those sheets had some big misses and a couple of them. Yeah, rip city was not a great beer there. Neon Daydream was the first one I laughed. So the Medusa there was a few that were you know, I'm glad that they're experimenting. And and to be to be fair, I didn't try any of their solid hitters. So it's not like I was drinking beer pong or the bass or something like that. I I kind of tried to step out. So I agree. Was it possible and that was kind of interesting. It was interesting. Now one had an interesting line to it. kind of nice. It was definitely unexpected. And I couldn't drink it. It just there was so much. It felt like I think it was the lines but it felt like sage. So I just know, I put it aside. That was kind of interesting, because I've never What was it? Do they call it black and white? Yeah. I never knew about that. But that to me was kind of an interesting twist. You know, the one that didn't mention that. What was it? The other one? You had jacket free by the founders? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. pretty solid ones too bad. They didn't have that one. Really good. Yeah, I agree. That one was a I think code number one or like not a was what we ranked it. Yeah. Yeah, they didn't have that one. Even in a bottle. So I was kind of a bummer. Yeah, I we. We did leave with some of the What did you get? That? Right. Yeah. And I ended up getting some Flanders red, but because I wanted to try it, but they didn't have it on top. Oh, that's right. We can tell which breweries we really liked and which one we despise the most on this trip. But we I've tried to think anything that ferment that I was just average. Yeah, I thought the same thing. I mean, obviously, the atmosphere is kind of cool, because you sit out there on that deck, but none of the beers really stood out to me there. And I would, I don't know, I'd gladly go hang out around that. firepit. And any night of the week. Yeah, absolutely. In there beers weren't, weren't bad, per se. But I mean, they had a lot of the maybe the more popular genre of beer right now with hazy teas and juices and all those kinds of things that you know, especially after already going and having a few Yeah, I'm not looking for not looking for big filler up, you know, things like that. So, so they might have just been a victim of timing. Could be that I did I liked like an ale apothecary I that's not a style of beer I genuinely enjoy. But I really liked the cherry. I thought the other ones were, I mean, they're high quality beers, even if you don't necessarily enjoy the style. Yeah, I thought they were pretty good. The one that was like, I guess a little bit disappointing on that one just because of their gbf in their small brewery or medium brewery here was pointless. Like that was for was fantastic for me. You know, and the beer was okay. But from the four that we tried to, I can't say any really like sessionable for me. Yeah, I was kind of the same way. I didn't really find one there that I really, really enjoyed all that much. I mean, they were decent. And it was fun to try it. The atmosphere was pretty cool. Oh, yeah. It's a beautiful place. Great view. And I want those tables. Yeah, the big log table was a conversation piece was impressive. The only other ones mentioned last night was the fact that we did attempt to get into mcmenamins and mcmenamins did not want our business did not want our business turned away tonight. We're sorry, we're not seating people anymore, even though we're open for 30 more minutes. Like Say what? Say Who? Which is disappointing because it's got it's got a cool atmosphere. But the wind of the night there probably was the fact we found a really nice whiskey bar there in bend. The Stihl great selection. And how was the old fashions gents? Good. They did a good job. Though, did they do that? They mixed one of yours with the wrong whiskey, didn't they? Well, we I think we just had a miscommunication on what it was. So I'd ordered the forester and I got the 1792 I was just happy at the end that I knew it wasn't Old Forrester. So the end of the at the end of the night as though like I was just wasn't quite right. So it worked out. And I kept it just to add some Breckenridge and the smart was up with the small batch I think it was, it was pretty good. It was pretty good. It was solid. Second try on Breckenridge bec use I have a bottle of their the r main stuff at home that I enj y. So good stuff. Anything to wrap that up on anything from the actual beer run that we miss, you want to touch on anyone, anyone know other than our young guy had to start drinking sprite just switched over to sprite That I do want to stress that the old men were still drinking. The young guy smarter than the rest was smarter than the rest of us. Went to sprite I didn't know they had a sparkling clear beer here. It's Sprite Right? And that was another good thing. This is the real reason behind this trip is we got a bunch of us together that don't get to spend enough time together. It's good to get Josh down out of Seattle and the three of us over from Boise and just kind of have fun for a couple of days. All right, I'm going to admit this was a great trip. There's probably at least one more episode coming out of it possibly to one may have everything to do with self driving cars. We have almost 30 minutes of conversation on that and maybe a little more in depth on the relationship pieces. Either way, this has been a fun bonus episode. So that's it for this week's edition of strife seeks fine. Thanks for listening. If you enjoyed the episode, please leave a review. It really helps if you have feedback or ideas that reach out to the Strive Seek Find page on Facebook, o to @chancewhitmore5 on Twi ter. Until next time, keep rec iving your Have a great day.
