Tucked away in northeast Arkansas, the small town of Rector transforms each Labor Day weekend into a vibrant celebration that draws crowds of up to 20,000 people. Dating back to 1940, this beloved tradition has become the community's signature event - as one local puts it, "Most people celebrate the Fourth of July. In Rector, we celebrate Labor Day."

In this episode, we experience the Rector Labor Day Picnic firsthand, capturing the sights, sounds, and flavors that make this 85-year tradition special. From award-winning parade floats featuring sharks and octopi to the volunteer-run food stands serving hundreds of burgers, every aspect of this celebration showcases small-town America at its finest.

What makes this event extraordinary isn't just its longevity but the spirit behind it. Everyone you meet - from the burger cooks who arrived at 6:30 AM to the creative minds designing elaborate floats - is a volunteer. These dedicated community members give up their holiday weekend to create something special, with all proceeds supporting the upkeep of the local cemetery.

The food alone is worth the trip, with carnival classics like funnel cakes and fried Oreos alongside massive $10 corn dogs that "looked like turkey legs." We chat with longtime residents who've attended 40-60 previous picnics, getting their perspective on what makes this year's perfect weather and exceptional turnout particularly memorable.

Join us for this heartwarming exploration of community spirit, tradition, and the special magic that happens when a small town comes together. Whether you're nostalgic for small-town celebrations or simply curious about unique American traditions, this episode captures the essence of community identity in a rapidly changing world.

Speaker 1:

Okay, cool, yeah, you throw that away. Man, my goodness, people get around and tyler just goes off the rails. What's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up, what's up. Everybody, welcome to a brand new episode of the Almost Brothers Podcast. On today's episode, we are at Labor Day Picnic Rector, arkansas 2025. Let's go.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah, let me adjust my stuff. There we go, yeah, go, yeah. Yeah, let me adjust my stuff.

Speaker 1:

Uh-oh, there we go. Yeah, man, yeah. So this is our me and Tyler's first every time being here. Yeah, how you feel, tyler? So far it's warm.

Speaker 3:

It's warm, Someone took my parking spot and I saw a dog, so I've got mixed feelings. Okay, yeah. So some good, some bad.

Speaker 1:

We are also here with Rector Native parking spot and I saw a dog, so I've got mixed feelings. Okay, yeah. So some good, some bad. We are also here with rector native ben jimmy yancey, jimmy ben yancey, hello, how's it going, man? Going good, going good. How's life?

Speaker 4:

been really good yeah, man.

Speaker 1:

So how many is this for you? Do you know? Do you have like a counter, an idea?

Speaker 4:

I'm 44 and I've probably been to 40.

Speaker 1:

Oh gosh, yeah, so you've been here for a long time. Beautiful dog, leave the dogs alone. Man, leave the dogs alone.

Speaker 3:

He was a service dog. I'm not going to disturb him. He's working right now. Appreciate your service.

Speaker 1:

Right, he's doing his job, man. So man, my good. So do you know how, how long?

Speaker 5:

how long like this has been going on like what year it kind of originated?

Speaker 1:

I do not. No, I don't know either. I should have. I should have checked on that before, before we started this. See, like, how long has this been going on? Because, man, I'll tell you what it's.

Speaker 3:

It's put together, let's ask some people walking by right.

Speaker 1:

Does anybody know how long this has been going on? What year was this this established? Let's see if we get okay. No, I thought T-shirts may have it on there. No T-shirts, no T-shirts. Yeah, yep, yep, the T-shirts. So what is your favorite part about this? That is going on about this picnic, because, man, they got pageants, they got rides, they got games, the food. There you go. So what's your favorite? Carnival or stuff like this type of food.

Speaker 4:

The funnel cake.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I like the funnel cake. So what's that? Did I hear a little birdie said that there might be deep fried Twinkies around here.

Speaker 3:

I've not been to the other side. I know there's fried.

Speaker 5:

Oreos.

Speaker 1:

There is fried Oreos. See, I haven't made it over there yet. Yeah, I need to get over there and check that out for sure. Yeah, check out the food. So, tyler, what's your favorite carnival type food?

Speaker 3:

Funnel cake, cakes up there, I had a little bit of the kids funnel cake yesterday up there. Oh, I don't know, I don't really go to carnivals very, very often. I'm not really a uh, a carnival food connoisseur okay, uh so live.

Speaker 1:

Had a pretty good looking corn dog yesterday. Those things were massive, it was $10.

Speaker 3:

Well, it looked like $10 worth. Sarahbeth had one wrapped up in aluminum foil. I thought it was a turkey leg.

Speaker 1:

That's what I thought it was at first, because Jamie was like what is Liv eating? I was like it's a turkey leg, isn't it?

Speaker 3:

But the flaw with that? The flaw with that, it wasn't the batter wasn't completely cooked.

Speaker 1:

Oh, okay, okay, so you could.

Speaker 3:

it looked great on the outside and you peel away and it's like, oh, it's still drippy yeah.

Speaker 1:

Okay, Okay. Well, I mean it was massive, so I mean I get it, I get it.

Speaker 3:

I was literally like is there a way y'all can make it not as massive? Like we'll use the jumbo corn dogs. I mean, can you be a little light on the batter?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it looked like a jumbo corn dog, that's for sure. Can I get a half?

Speaker 5:

order You're right Right.

Speaker 1:

How close were you been to getting in the hot dog eating contest? Very, yeah, I thought about it too, but I'd be the worst of the worst.

Speaker 5:

I mean, I could put away some hot dogs.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I could probably eat a lot of them, but I couldn't eat a lot of them quickly.

Speaker 5:

The bread, choking that down as fast as they eat too. That's hard.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I think the winner was like eight and a half in five minutes.

Speaker 5:

I feel like I would. I've done that for lunch before by myself. Yeah just in one sitting.

Speaker 3:

I was saying I'd be the person that would enter, but take my sweet time. Who could eat the hot dog In my mind. Who could eat the hot dog the slowest? I'd be go Just one bite.

Speaker 4:

Looking at it.

Speaker 3:

Tom, maybe a sip of water, another bite.

Speaker 1:

How many did you get?

Speaker 3:

I got three quarters my tummy started hurting, just a little bit.

Speaker 1:

That is so funny. I'll tell you what, Ben. We're going to have your wife on here in a second and talk about the float. That parade was amazing. It was so cool. It was so many, so much going on. It was hard to focus on stay with the flow. So I'd talk to people hey, how's it going? I'd look up, it's like, oh no, I'm six cars behind here, I've got to run back.

Speaker 4:

This year was an exceptionally long parade.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah, it was good man. People on both sides I mean it was fantastic man. Yeah, it was a good time, it was a good time. So what would you like to see out of this next year? What do you think we can improve on?

Speaker 4:

More picnic tables for people.

Speaker 1:

There you go, More places to sit. There you go, and it's like I guess you just never know how many people are going to show up. But man, sometimes it's just cool to see all these people in one place. So, yeah, definitely.

Speaker 4:

If we could bottle this weather up, yes, and pour it out next year.

Speaker 1:

Yes, yeah, because what was it? Was it last year or the year before where it was like really really muddy Year before? Yeah, they said it was like knee-deep mud out here.

Speaker 3:

Oh, that's disgusting. Yeah, yep, yep, yep, bad year.

Speaker 1:

Yep, absolutely Well, ben man, we love you so much.

Speaker 5:

Holler at your wife and tell her to come on over what y'all do.

Speaker 1:

Oh, thank you so much, man. It's a blessing, man, it's definitely a blessing, and we're just glad to be here, dude for sure.

Speaker 3:

But your wife, if you would, and have her come on over tyler. But yeah, what did you go on? Any rides I don't do, right, you're not a ride. You're not a ride guy, right, I don't know. Okay, I am the designated purse holder.

Speaker 1:

They're just standing there just like oh no, I'll hang out oh yeah, I don't have to go on any rides are y'all from this, y'all from this area over here?

Speaker 3:

I'm not sure when you started okay, here.

Speaker 1:

Okay, that's what I was gonna ask, yeah, um betty esmond has always been in charge of the cemetery?

Speaker 1:

okay, yeah, it's usually listed over there. That's what I was looking for on the shirts. I was like, well, maybe the shirts say it, but it's a long time, okay, yeah, absolutely. Yes, ma'am. Uh, we'll be out here. We're gonna record a couple episodes, so we'll be out here for a while. Yes, ma'am, uh, we'll be out here. We're gonna record a couple episodes, so we'll be out here for a while. Yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am, yes, ma'am, yeah, so we're gonna find out how long this has been going, because I know it's a little bit like ben said he's been to 40, you know. So I know it's been a while, a lot longer than you've been alive, tyler yeah, wouldn't, uh, wouldn't surprise me yeah, yeah, but yeah, man, so no ride.

Speaker 1:

So do carnival like. Do they scare you?

Speaker 3:

I always feel uncomfortable I'm to the point where I've seen too many accidents from rides. Also, I'm not a fan of moving at high speeds if I'm not the one controlling it. Yeah, I guess that's true.

Speaker 1:

What's your favorite carnival game? I know you said you're not a carnival guy, but what's your favorite game? I like the balloon popping.

Speaker 3:

That's a classic Simple, effective. I don't like the, I like the balloon popping, that's, you know, simple, that's a classic, yeah, I don't like the like ball in the basket the puxico homecoming yeah, always said I don't think they do it anymore. They had a uh little stand where it was like these little plastic cups that would like float in like a little kiddie pool.

Speaker 3:

Right, they're a ping pong and no one ever won, yeah, except oh, this one time it was actually when I was dating an ex in college yeah, and she won, and she won a freaking bunny.

Speaker 1:

And she made one Like how many did she have to make in to win the bunny?

Speaker 3:

Just one, really Just one, really Just one. Because it's a plastic cup and it's a ping pong ball. So the idea, at least by the people that created it, was it's just going to bounce out. And of all the years that I've been coherent, it's not a lot. It's not a lot right um so five maybe I've only known two or three people that have actually done it. One was my ex and another one was actually like one, yeah, one something from it.

Speaker 3:

One was a another friend of mine, then some, I can't remember someone like I knew of. Okay, but that's it. I don't know anyone else. I'm sure there might be more.

Speaker 1:

I'm sure there's some somewhere. Maybe there's bunny rabbits right now live because of that game, maybe, yeah, no, no, so we've got Mandy Yancy on the better half of Ben. The better half, yeah. Absolutely the better half. How are you doing? I been the better half. Yeah, absolutely the better half. How are you doing? I'm hot. Yeah, yeah, a little bit, yeah, so how many? So we're starting with. How many is this for you of coming here, because you didn't grow up here?

Speaker 2:

I did not grow up here. I grew up in corning, which is another clay county town. Yeah, I'm 17 years, okay, so it's still been a while it's still been a while though it's still been a while that I've been here.

Speaker 1:

We're trying to find out how long this has been going on.

Speaker 2:

A long time yeah.

Speaker 1:

So the parade we were talking about the parade and how it was awesome. There was people everywhere. I was telling Ben I'd stop and say hi to somebody and then I'm five cars behind and I'm having to catch up. It was great.

Speaker 2:

I do believe this was probably one of the biggest parades I have ever that was exactly what I was gonna ask.

Speaker 1:

Is this kind of one of the bigger ones?

Speaker 2:

this was the bigger one that I have ever seen. I've never seen that many floats yeah, and everything yeah in here man, it was so good.

Speaker 1:

It was so good so we're announcing right here which they announced it over the loud speakers a minute ago but we won first place in the float competition. Yeah, and that was you Like. You're the one that you know kind of put it together. You were the brains behind it and, most of the time, the hands behind it, you know. So congratulations not only to the church, but also to you.

Speaker 2:

Good job Well, thank you.

Speaker 1:

It was pretty awesome.

Speaker 2:

It was pretty awesome, the shark on the ranger. I think probably won it for us.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, oh, that was the one that took us over. I think it was the octopus and the. What was the other one?

Speaker 2:

We had the octopus, a seahorse and a shark on the float too.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, that was so funny, man. So good, so good. I have $10. Hi, baby. No, you cannot have $10. I gave you $20 last night. What are you doing? What are you doing? Well then, that's your. I don't know what to tell you, but yeah, and so how many times that you can remember have we won first place?

Speaker 2:

I know three times that has been our first place.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

Since I've been helping and participating with the float.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so you're up there. You're like the Michael Jordan of floats right now.

Speaker 2:

I took offense last year. We won second place and I was like that's not happening again.

Speaker 1:

Yep, and it's cool because this is my first. I got here right after this last year, so I got to hear about it but not actually be here for it. So it's cool to be a part of and it's cool to see and it's cool to watch the whole town and of course, we have other people that come in and are a part of it but it's cool to watch the whole town say, hey, we're going to really join in and be a part of this.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, this is our big most people celebrate the Fourth of July. Yeah, this is our big most people celebrate the 4th of July.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, rector, we celebrate Labor Day, labor Day yeah, that's what I was talking to Brian Truelove earlier and that's what he said. He said it's just really cool seeing the whole town get into it. It's like a movie.

Speaker 2:

It is.

Speaker 1:

You know where you see, like everybody get into one event and everybody goes all out. The ending scene of Grown Ups, the ending scene I think that was 4th of July also yeah, it's really really cool and really awesome to be a part of. So it's great and I love getting connected with people like you that really you put your time and energy and effort into it. It wasn't just, hey, we're just going to throw this together. It's like no, we're going to plan, we're going to get stuff together, we're going to you know Well, and what's good about it?

Speaker 2:

everything that goes on out here is completely volunteer work.

Speaker 5:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

None of us are getting paid. All the money that is raised here today actually goes to the Woodland Heights Cemetery for the upkeep of that, which is the big cemetery in Rector. Yeah so yeah, all the workers out here are all volunteers.

Speaker 3:

Wait, wait, wait, michael, I'm not getting paid for this.

Speaker 2:

No, no, wait, wait, wait, michael.

Speaker 1:

I'm not getting paid for this. No, no, sorry, ty-ty, did you not? Oh, he's out, he's out.

Speaker 2:

Sorry, he's got babies to raise.

Speaker 3:

I mean come on, he needs some money. Any bit will help. Any bit will help.

Speaker 2:

But it is really cool and to see. I mean, you have so many different generations that come out here. You have the little kids, you have the older adults, you have all the different churches and organizations that come out and support you want to say hi Ryan, hi Ronis.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and that's what it is.

Speaker 2:

It's all the businesses, all the churches, everybody comes out here I'm like this is our big thing and we have a lot of class reunions that go on and it's not just one day, I mean, it has been all. It's an all weekend thing.

Speaker 1:

Yep, yeah, so is this the first year? It's been multiple days.

Speaker 2:

This is the first year that the carnival has been multiple days.

Speaker 1:

Okay, yes.

Speaker 2:

Normally we do pageants on Sunday and Monday, but for the carnival coming in which we got a new carnival crew and this is our first year to do Friday, saturday, sunday and Monday.

Speaker 1:

Nice. It's just so awesome man, so awesome to be a part of it. Well, mandy, again, congratulations, first place. You know all I do is win, win, win. I should have had that on here, but you know that's what she does.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, all I do is win, win, win. I should have had that on here, but you know that's what she does. That doesn't have the same.

Speaker 2:

I can't win at a beauty pageant, but I can make a float.

Speaker 1:

There you go. What's up, buddy?

Speaker 2:

Come here, brantley, you want to say hi.

Speaker 1:

That is awesome, hi, he's so awesome. Yeah, so, if you want, will grab alan and and jerry if they can, if they could scoot free, get them over here.

Speaker 1:

I'm gonna apologize now, but I'll get them yeah, well, we're gonna talk to them a little bit on on on man, just just cooking and being able to serve people here, man, and like like mandy said, you know everybody is volunteering, everybody's spending their time, spending their weekend, spending their labor day to come up here to cook, to serve food, to love on people, to put on the pageants, all that stuff.

Speaker 3:

How y'all doing what's up? Man, you are jacked.

Speaker 6:

I love it.

Speaker 1:

Just wild, just wild. What's up? Yeah, go ahead and have a seat. Where's Jer Bear? What's going on? What's up? Yeah, go ahead and have a seat. Where's Jer Bear? He's going home. What's up? Sit on. Huh, oh, he's coming there, he is Okay. Come on, jer Bear, right here, right here, right here beside me. Go ahead and pick that microphone up. What are you going to do? Just talk. You got to pick the microphone up. You got to turn it on what's going on. What's up, man? Oh, you know How's it going.

Speaker 4:

Hey, we've been cooking burgers.

Speaker 1:

Been rocking. You have to talk into the microphone. Yeah, I know, there you go, what up Jer?

Speaker 5:

Not much, brother. We're just having a great time today.

Speaker 1:

Yep Having a good time. How long have y'all been out here?

Speaker 5:

I got here at 6.30 this morning.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 5:

Started getting things ready, yep.

Speaker 4:

I got here about 6.45, then we went over to church and got 100 pounds of onions.

Speaker 1:

Yep church and got 100 pounds of onions.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, and I knew y'all were talking yeah, y'all were really chopping up the onions yesterday. Uh, we fixed uh 16 sausage and egg biscuits and we had yeah, alan done a good job this morning yeah, I was gonna.

Speaker 1:

I was gonna come over like we were lining up for the float and I was like man, I should have went over there because I seen you called me. I seen you called me this morning. We was getting ready.

Speaker 4:

Yeah and, uh, we had some people that just kind of walked over to the stand hey do you got any coffee? And then we end up offering them a sausage.

Speaker 1:

That's awesome yeah.

Speaker 4:

Cheese biscuit. It was pretty, pretty awesome yeah.

Speaker 5:

You know the thing of it is. We started rotisserie and doing the burgers this year.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 5:

And there's been about four different guys that come back and get a second burger because the first burger was too good.

Speaker 1:

Oh, there you go yeah, that's what I'm talking about. Yeah, and how many do you think that?

Speaker 4:

y'all have cooked so far Probably close to 500.

Speaker 1:

That is awesome, awesome, awesome, oh, wow, wow, okay, so 1940 was the first year that this went on.

Speaker 3:

Wow so 85 years.

Speaker 1:

So how many have you been to personally?

Speaker 4:

You know I've probably been to 61 of them 61 of them.

Speaker 1:

That is awesome, man. That is awesome. Yeah, 1940, yeah 86 years.

Speaker 3:

Wow, that is awesome. Yeah, 1940,. Yeah, 86 years?

Speaker 1:

Wow, that is awesome, that is crazy. How many have y'all been to like personally 50 years, 50?

Speaker 4:

55 of them.

Speaker 1:

Wow, that's so cool. And one this is our first baby.

Speaker 3:

Well, I guess a half, because the day's not over yet.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I guess that's true. Yeah, that's so true.

Speaker 4:

You know, they got kiddie rides right.

Speaker 3:

Oh, oh man, don't make me make Richard jokes at you. That was bad man.

Speaker 1:

I was about to say I'm surprised y'all had burgers to serve, so how is this, on the scale of all the ones that y'all have been to, how do y'all think this one is going so far?

Speaker 5:

This one right here is probably the best I've been to so far, because the weather is perfect. Yeah, I mean the parade was a lot bigger than I've ever seen. I mean it's just been awesome.

Speaker 4:

God's been awesome to us. The weather really made a big difference. The cooler weather really made a big difference. Yeah, I mean, there was probably what 15,000 probably in town today Dang, it was a lot. 15,000, 20,000 people, oh yeah.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, because I mean we've got the park's full with parking, the church is half full with parking, harps is half full with parking. I mean it's everywhere, man.

Speaker 4:

And when everybody got out of the parade, the stand, we was fixing hamburgers and cheeseburgers and barbecue as fast as they was selling. Yeah, we couldn't keep up.

Speaker 1:

Yep, that's what we came. So we had to go back get Jamie's car and we came over man. There was a line of people.

Speaker 4:

I'm like, wow, this is awesome. I'm like somebody just quit eating for the weekend and decided to come eat.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, just come on out and get you a burger.

Speaker 1:

No grocery shopping this weekend, Right yeah and man, it's just awesome Again to see you know Mandy talked about how everybody volunteers.

Speaker 2:

What's up?

Speaker 1:

Everybody volunteers, Everybody puts in.

Speaker 4:

you know their time, their, energy and their effort to just come here and be a part of this to put on the best event that you can put on how many pounds of barbecue is?

Speaker 5:

that in that bucket, three pounds of barbecue in that bucket, and we're on our fourth one, no, sixth one, oh, wow, really 18 pounds of barbecue meat or barbecue sauce.

Speaker 3:

What's?

Speaker 4:

up buddy. Barbecue meat man 18 pounds, and we're not a barbecue stand, we're a hamburger stand, actually, right, right, you know what?

Speaker 3:

You got to diversify sometimes. Yeah, yeah, meet the needs of the customers.

Speaker 1:

Has anybody came in and like, hey, can I get a burger and a barbecue? Put it all on one.

Speaker 4:

Well, last year we did. Yeah, I called it a butt burger.

Speaker 1:

A butt burger. There you go. That's not bad man trademark I'm pretty good it's not bad yeah, oh yeah, it's questionable Pepper jack cheese.

Speaker 5:

I've got to get back to my grilled onions.

Speaker 1:

Oh, absolutely, man. We appreciate y'all Love you so much. Come and check out the. Yeah, the. He didn't see I was making the.

Speaker 3:

The burger.

Speaker 1:

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 3:

You're goofy.

Speaker 1:

He's wearing an over and doing a great job with the kitchen and man y'all are y'all are killing it, dude.

Speaker 4:

So we've done a lot of new stuff this year to see uh we call it uh work smarter, not harder that's, yeah, that's seems to work out we've done a lot of the burgers on the rotisserie yeah, that helped a lot. It didn't have so many people in the uh kitchen area there hitting and bumping and grinding on everybody. Yep and it worked out real good, going good.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, man, sure did. Well, we appreciate you, man. We love you so much, love you guys. Yeah, good luck getting back to it, man.

Speaker 4:

Love the service that we had yesterday. Oh yeah, I counted about 147 people.

Speaker 1:

Yep.

Speaker 4:

I didn't like the timer, but anyways.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you didn't like the timer. I gave you an extra five minutes. Oh yeah, Blame it on the people. Yeah, that sounds right.

Speaker 4:

I couldn't help it. They was way over there and way over there.

Speaker 3:

Hey, big Rich in the house.

Speaker 1:

Big Rich 77. So for our listeners that don't know, richard has been in the hospital for the last few days, so we are so glad to see him, we are so glad he is out. He got discharged this morning and he's about to come and sit down and and he, uh, he made me leave early last night.

Speaker 3:

He told me I was with him for about an hour and a half yeah and he said I'm getting tired, I need to go to bed, yeah, whatever that man I thought he richard posted on facebook like getting out of here sooner, or something like that. I thought about commenting like free my man, rich, or something like that.

Speaker 1:

That's what we were talking about yesterday. I was like dude, I was like if you want to go, we can get you out of here, we can find a way. And then we started doing the Mission Impossible music. Guys love it, love you. Be careful You're awesome.

Speaker 4:

Love you, love it. Love you, be careful.

Speaker 1:

You're awesome, love you, love you.

Speaker 4:

Big.

Speaker 1:

Rich. What's up, bubba? How you doing? I thought you'd be here a little bit later.

Speaker 3:

I thought you were going to take a nap. I would have.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, well, you know I'm immortal, so oh my gosh, yeah, right, right. I'm built different.

Speaker 3:
