Hey everyone, and welcome back to Travel Tip Tuesday with the Travel Mug Podcast. I am Jenn and I am joined as always by my partner in podcasting, Meggan. Today I wanna talk about batteries. my God, I can't wait. Let's do this. Okay. Specifically lithium batteries, because I have been seeing some posts in some travel Facebook groups asking what is allowed and not allowed on planes. There's been some changes. It's been confusing, so let's talk about it. So batteries can be an issue because they can short circuit, overheat and potentially cause sparks or fire, which is obviously not ideal when you're flying 30,000 feet above the earth. No one wants this. no, No. wants this. So in general, you are required to pack all batteries and electronic devices containing batteries in your carry-on bag or on your person. That way you can keep an eye on it, which like makes sense. So some things though that. I, I've done this, have packed them in my check luggage, not thinking about the batteries. You know what I Sure. Cameras, watches, laptops, always in your carry on power banks and external chargers, e-cigarettes, electronic toothbrushes and things that buzz Meggan, if you catch my drift. I Do. The issue is that some airlines have banned the use of power banks on airplanes after one was found to be the possible source of a fire that engulfed a plane in January, 2025. That's, that's terrible. It is. So I'm not gonna list the airlines because I'm sure that like that list would immediately become outdated. But just know that some airlines have banned the use of power banks during your flight, meaning you cannot charge your phone with them, and you cannot charge the power bank on board by like plugging it into the seat back plug. And many have restrictions on the maximum wattage that it can be. So to be very clear. You can bring them on the plane, but you cannot use them on the plane, on airlines that have instituted a ban. before you fly, be sure to , search your airlines for an up to date policy. As these things change, I think the confusion came on because people just heard like power bank ban and they thought that they couldn't bring it on the Mm. when it's, you can bring them on the plane. You just cannot use them on the plane. So, Meggan, had you heard of this? Had you seen any rumblings about this? Not really, but I do recall, uh, when we were checking in for WestJet, they actually had a question about, uh, what you can bring or something in the check in process. I didn't pay it too close attention'cause we didn't have one. Um, but it did say ask about lithium batteries in that. So that actually sparked my memory. But going back to what you said, I mean, I think power banks have their place. But for your devices on the plane, you mentioned it yourself, you can plug them into the seat back usually anyway. Most planes now do have plugs, so you don't necessarily need it on the plane. I would just, unless I needed it for something desperately, yes, you can bring it with you and not use it, but if you don't need it, just leave it home. That's just the safest for me. But obviously it's whatever the use is for, but I'm just plugging things into the back of the seat. Yeah, I, I always travel with a power bank before I got my new phone. My phone was dying like super quickly and I, I needed, I couldn't be out for a full day and using my phone. Yeah, it was, it was bad. I have replaced my phone. Everything is fine now. Uh, although I haven't traveled with this new phone yet, so I don't know. See how fast the battery drains when you're Apple Maps yourself everywhere. But, uh, I let Peter do it. As long as you have two phones, you're good. There you go. Just something to keep in mind when you're packing your battery things, uh, on planes. So that is it for this week's episode.
