Riding Instructor Interview Series Continues!
Enjoy this interview with Katie Boniface!
Katie Boniface, a passionate horsewoman based in Queensland, Australia. With over 30 years of riding experience and 18 years as an instructor, Katie brings a wealth of knowledge and heart to her work. After a successful run in dressage, show jumping, and eventing at the state level, she shifted her focus from competition to connection.
Through her riding school, Equestrian Spirit, Katie helps riders build deeper, more meaningful partnerships with their horsesโgrounded in trust, biomechanics, and mutual respect. Her mission is to guide riders in seeing their horses as equals and companions on a journey of growth and self-discovery.
Here's the free webinar mentioned: https://www.equestrianspirit.com.au/sayyes
From Katie:
"I have been a horse rider for 30 years and a riding instructor for 18 finding my passion as a teacher in a riding school environment. From childhood through to my early 20โs I competed successfully at shows, dressage, show jumping and eventing at state level. Having gotten my trophy and ribbon riding out of me when I was young riding became a spiritual practice for me, developing my connection to my self and others on a deeper level. What occurred to me is that you can't have a meaningful relationship with someone that doesn't want to be with you so I set about looking for ways to get my horse to enjoy being around me.
At the same time I was also working with a couple of horses with soundness issues. Having being told that a horse would work soundly if you work it correctly I dug into the physiology of horse movement and how we as riders and trainers can best work our horses not only for soundness but also for suppleness, maximum range of movement and dare I say to look like they actually enjoyed being ridden!!
And so triggered a profound reassessment of everything I had ever learnt to date about what it meant to be a horse rider, how I was riding and what my goal was from my training. I discovered the importance of the horses mental, emotional and physical health to not only its performance and success but also to its willingness as a participant in our partnership. And I learnt what it meant to have a true connection with the horse and an open 2 way conversation.
It is my goal and mission in life to share these values with as many horse riders as I can so we can start to see our beautiful horses as equals, partners and part of our own life's journey to better understand ourselves through better understanding others."

What a fantastic opportunity it was to hear all about Shelley Manley's vision for young horse enthusiasts. Riding instructors, please take the time to listen to this interview and consider joining this brilliant program: PAL Around Pony School
Here's Shelley's Bio:
Shelley Manley has been riding horses for close to 40 years and teaching young riders for over thirty years. She started teaching riding lessons at the age of 15 and just never stopped! She also has a B.S and M.A in Psychology, and an M.Ed. in School Counseling. She has worked as the riding director at a residential childrenโs home and as a riding instructor at multiple facilities. She has also worked as a School Counselor for eleven years at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She lives in Shepherdstown, WV with her 2 kids, 5 cats, 1 great pyrenees, 1 bearded dragon, and 1 retired pony!
Ride From the Start LLC and the PAL Around Pony School program began in 2012, when Shelley had many parents of young children requesting horseback riding lessons. This often proved a challenging endeavor, as her tiniest riders would quickly grow bored when riding and were not able to sustain attention on the pony beyond a few minutes at a time. While studying to become a school counselor, Shelley was also learning how to develop a curriculum and write lesson plans. She was studying child development in depth and pondering how to create a more age-appropriate means of introducing young children to horses. She decided to use her newfound skills to create a program that combined elements of fun hands-on learning, stories, songs, games, and horseback riding.
In March of 2012, she held her first class, offering it to a group of friends and their children. Since the students were eager to continue the program, she recognized a need to continue developing the lesson plans, and the PAL Around Pony School curriculum began to take shape. It has evolved over the past thirteen years, as a result of customer feedback. The program has operated at six different locations across the Eastern panhandle and in the nearby states of Virginia and Maryland, all with consistent success. Hundreds of area children have now enjoyed PAL Around Pony School, and many of those children have continued into regular riding lessons. Other instructors have also taught the program successfully, and it is time to bring this important program to instructors across the country.

Another fantastic interview for the Riding Instructor Interview Series, with Bethany Tuskey.
She emphasizes creating thinking riders, staying away from extreme thinking in the horse world, and learning to communicate effectively with your horse.
Bethanyโs love of horses began at an early age, and she has dedicated her life to learning the art of horsemanship from master horse trainers. She has studied the arts of classical dressage, liberty work, work in hand, and long reining. Bethany has taken what she has learned from other trainers as well the horses, and combined it with her spiritual beliefs to create a unique style of training based on love for the horse.
She says: "Our horse is treated as our partner and our relationship with the horses always takes priority over anything we may want to achieve with them. Through relationships built on mutual trust and understanding, we are able to train our horses without any use of force."
Bethany enjoys teaching lessons and clinics as well as performing with her Andalusians at various shows and exhibitions. It is her goal to share her unique training style and show people how they too can take their relationship with their horse to a whole new level.

Another fantastic interview for the Riding Instructor Series!
I had a huge smile on my face during this interview, as I soon found out that Tiffany is a kindred spirit, leading with kindness, always. I'm sure you will enjoy hearing Tiffany's approach to teaching and connecting with her students.
Bio:
Tiffany Andrews (Dressage, Eventing, H/J) grew up riding in lesson barns and started her competition career at age 13. When she aged out of the junior divisions she went straight into working with horses professionally, owning and managing her own boarding/training business for 10 years.
Currently Tiffany trains out of Morningside Stables and manages their Linthicum MD location. She spends her days teaching a wide variety of students, many whom have come to her with problem and project horses, or have confidence issues in the saddle and on the ground.
Tiffany believes in building confidence in both horse and rider to help make their goals a reality. Tiffany offers full and partial training, lessons, clinics, and coaching at shows. She specializes in eventing and dressage but also has a strong background in hunters/jumpers and equitation. Over the years she's shown her main horse Crown Royal, whom she brought along herself, in the 3'6" hunters, the meter jumpers, training level eventing, and up through 3rd level dressage.
Along with teaching riders and training client or program horses, Tiffany also is working to bring along her 4 year old OTTB, Frozen, with plans for her to be her next upper level competition horse.

Enjoy this bonus podcast interview with Actor, Stuntman, and Storyteller, Damion Poitier!
I loved how he shared the indescribable connection he has with his beloved Sammi; as well as his passion for honoring horses and all that they've done for us and continue to do. I can't wait to you to listen!
PLEASE click here for the fundraiser page and the full story.
Here's what Damion wrote:
"Hi, I'm Damion, and this is Sampson or as we call him Sammi. Sammi saved me, and I need your help to save him.
With your support we will make a documentary, not only about his treatment, but the immense effects these fascinating creatures have, and have had, upon humanity, and how we can be better custodians for them.
So how did we get here? Three years ago I was in the midst of a very challenging assignment. The beginning was creatively and financially rewarding, but as time went on the challenges began to outweigh the creative output, it started to take its toll on my mental health. My wife, a lifelong equestrian, saw this and started what can only be called a quest. Seven months of daily searches, trying to find the perfect companion for me, something large enough to carry me without difficulty but also engaging enough to form a bond... And she succeeded beyond anyone's wildest imagining.
Sammi saved me.
The things I learned about myself and the methods I developed to be a good companion for him also served me. and I was able to better navigate the demands put upon me. For two years our bond flourished and grew. Things were good and getting better. But entertainment is a fickle business and circumstances rapidly and dramatically shifted. My efforts to ride out the reduced opportunities were only successful with familial support, then things took an even worse turn.
Sammi fell ill.
Sammi was diagnosed by two different vets with PSSM1 and DSLD.
Now there are treatments available that can potentially help however they are not certain and quickly become costly.
And so I come to you. Now one thing I try to be very aware of when I reach out, is what do I offer when I ask, and this is a pretty big ask so I wanted to figure out a pretty big offer.
I have been in the entertainment business for 25 years and worked on a wide variety of projects at all levels. What that gives me is access to everyone I need to put together an amazing documentary series, not only about Sammi's recovery, But the importance and influence these majestic beings have had on humanity as a whole. In just the time since I began working on this the amount of things I have uncovered about their influence is staggering. They are so universal to human advancement, the very unit by which we measure mechanical energy is called Horsepower.
Horsepower; and we start with Saving Sampson. Thank you.
You are allowing me to honor a gift I can never repay. And to show a being of pure love how much he is appreciated.
Now this project is evolving, and the scope is very dependent on the response, so you are going to want to check the socials often to see what we are building to.
Thank you so much for joining me as we saddle up, Together we are Saving Sammi."

Continuing with the Riding Instructor Series...
Enjoy this interview with Joe Washburn, where you'll hear how he and his partner, Karen are helping riders of all levels connect to horses in harmonious ways.
Joe Washburn, owner and Trainer of JW Horsemanship & Services in Brenham, TX is a native Texan, living in and around the Houston area for most of his life. He discovered his love of horses and horsemanship about 15 years ago, at an open horse event, and has never looked back.
Joeโs program is all about helping people discover/rediscover their joy in the saddle. His team meets every rider/handler where they are, evaluates the gaps in both horse and human, and develops a plan to fix the holes and build a connection based on empathy, kindness, and respect as a two-way street. He has found a special talent in introducing horsemanship to complete beginners of all ages. He and his team of teaching horses have made riders out of more than 50 beginners in the past 18 months.
Joe is also an expert barefoot trimmer, one of the few that offers training to teach horses and donkeys to accept farrier work if they have never learned these skills
Joe and his spouse share a small ranch in Brenham, TX, where Joe runs his Horsemanship School as well as a Board & Train program that accepts a select few horses in for board & training several times a year.

Our Riding Instructor Interview Series continues with the inspiring Cailin Messer.
This was a wonderful interview, filled with beautiful insights for instructors and all students of the horse.
Kindly click here to visit Cailin's website to learn more and... here's Cailin's Story:
3rd Generation Horsewoman with a modern twist
Cailin Messer grew up horseback in Glen Carbon, Illinois where she and her family own and operate Glen Oaks Equestrian Center. Inspired by her experiences helping horses and people from a young age, Cailin graduated with a bachelorโs degree in Psychological and Brain Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis. This education sparked Cailinโs desire to pursue horsemanship practices that consider the mental and emotional aspect of the human-horse relationship.
With an ever expanding interest in the horse industry, Cailin spent much time exploring and practicing her craft in the show arena, thoroughbred racing, colt starting, teaching, and veterinary medicine. Along the way she found a real passion for riding horses in a way that aligns with her own personal values, talents, and abilities and an even greater passion for empowering others to do the same. She offers this mindset and encouragement through her current business of educating horses and motivating their human counterparts.
