SDCC 2026 Recap Part 2: Hall H Chaos, Simpsons & Spaceballs

We're back with part two of our San Diego Comic-Con recap, picking up where we left off on day two and carrying through to our final thoughts on the whole experience. This time we get into the chaos of Hall H, including a wristband standoff that turned into a two-hour, half-mile trek around the building just to get denied entry — twice. We also break down the panels that delivered and the ones that didn't: Lanterns surprised us with how much footage HBO was willing to show, the Spaceballs panel gave us a genuinely fun hour with Josh Gad, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga, and Collider's Showrunners on Showrunning brought out heavy hitters like Greg Daniels and Damon Lindelof. On the flip side, the Simpsons panel turned out to be one of the biggest letdowns of the weekend, with no voice cast in sight — though the one clip they did show us, imagining a world where Homer and Marge never met, ended up being a genuine highlight.

We also talk about a memorable, unplanned panel with Ashley Eckstein, our In-N-Out Burger verdict after years without a real hamburger, and the strange logistics failures that plagued the entire convention, from the trolley system to a parking garage that seemed built for a fraction of the actual crowd. Along the way we cover some of our favorite cosplay of the trip, a touching moment with Sergeant Slaughter in the autograph line, and the small personal wins that made the trip worth it, including meeting Judith O'Dea and catching wind of the Johnny Depp Ebenezer Scrooge reveal that had the internet buzzing all week.

We close things out with an honest, no-holds-barred recommendation on whether Comic-Con is actually worth attending, plus a look ahead at the box office moment we're in right now, with the Odyssey and Spider-Man both performing well and Avengers on the horizon. It's a candid, occasionally chaotic wrap-up of a trip that gave us plenty to talk about.

It was part one was so went over so well, and it was hugely successful that we thought we would Well, you'd already promised we were gonna split it in two parts, so we had no choice. We had to come back and talk about it. Now I will say this is an episode I would encourage people to listen to and not watch necessarily because this is a whole nother level of disheveled. Like I I gotta shave, I I just got back from a haircut, I haven't had a chance to like do the whole post-haircut shower, but and I've been up since four in the morning. So you know, the bags are heavy, like everything's heavy.

Speaking of bags, right back to Comic-Con. All right, anyways, so where we left off was we covered our arrival in San Diego. We talked about the preview night, and we talked about day one, and that's where we concluded that conversation. So getting into part two wrap-up, this really will kick off with what what is day two or July 24th on the calendar.

Friday, correct. So Friday of that week. This was a day too, I saw a lot more cosplay on this day, which I think there was a lot of it going on elsewhere other than on the exhibit hall and even inside the convention center itself. I think there was a lot more of that going on outside and other locations, but I saw a lot more of it on this day inside.

Yeah, and there was competitions that were locally, that were, you know, right around the corner down the street. So people were not only doing it, you know, at the convention, but also at different establishments.

You kept talking about that the whole time, and where were you getting this information? I never once saw or heard anything about any contests. Or anything.

Where? Um, when I was doing the research and picking stuff and you know, like yeah, because uh I asked the girl, we met a girl on the trolley, and I asked her, because she was gonna cosplay, and I said, Are you gonna be in the competition? and she was like, No, no, I'm not that that into it. But she seemed into it.

Yeah, so I saw a lot. One of my favorites was Spider Noir. Yeah. This was a great one that we saw there. I it's and then of course, obviously Avengers Doomsday, this was a good one. Uh, this was a deep cut, Mike. I I, you know, people of a certain age uh or fandom would would appreciate it, but this was the Tina Turner Beyond Thunderdome cosplay. Right. That's just one I I stopped and wanted to say, I I gotta I can I take a picture of that. And then, of course, you'll talk about this shortly as as we move into the day, uh, day two, but there was a great Rick Moranis tribute here with uh Spaceball's Dark Helmet. This guy went all out. So that was fun to see more of that because I'd been missing that uh the first you know preview night and then day one. But so how does this kick off for you, Mike, day two? I know the panel that I sort of started things off on, but do you what what was your do you remember what your first thing on the schedule, day two, was?

I thought I went right to Hall, I was in Hall H for four events. And I think that's where I started. I got there, we were both gonna go to The Walking Dead, and then we kind of look we're like, we don't watch it anymore. Like, what's the point? But I wound up getting there, and I'll talk about the Hall of Shame at the end, but or the walk of shame, and it was, you know, um Maggie and the guy with the bat, I see, I don't even remember their character names. Negan. Yeah. So they were on stage and they were talking about how the they're having more fun than ever. That show just wore thin with me. It was too much.

Yeah, I loved The Walking Dead, of course. I was there from the beginning and the end, as were you. Yeah. And I loved Fear of the Walking Dead as well. I stayed on for that, but yeah, at a certain point, it just you know, it's a heavy investment now. And I can't comment on whether or not the the quality of the production and the storylines and things have kept up. I would assume so, because it's still going strong. So you gotta go you gotta tip your hat to the franchise there, what they created. But and they both look great, too. It was, I'm sure, cool to see them. I was not in there with you.

So and she was excited. She's she was talking about how this was like the best season of the series. So, you know, there's some real positive energy from the actors and yeah, when they showed up. You know, that's a tell when when people show up, which we'll get to.

And we we saw some cool Negan cosplay, too. In fact, on our way in, I think, that morning, remember there's a guy on the trolley and he was in front of us with the Negan.

He had the bat and it he had like Christmas lights on it, so but they were red.

Yeah, yeah. It was very, very cool. But was there anything so did they drop some footage in that Walking Dead?

I got there i in the middle of it.

So if they did, I don't know, but they didn't run a trailer. They they were they weren't wrapping up, but yeah, you know, there was nothing shown.

Now, around three o'clock, so I my first panel was another, as I spoke, but on part one, if you go back and check out that episode, which we'd encourage you to do on the YouTube channel, is was Collider's showrunners on showrunning. So again, this was a series of panels by Collider that had, you know, a lot of A-list folks in different roles in the industry talking about, you know, what the role is all about, what they do, and maybe, you know, debunking some of the myths about the role, you know, producing, directing, and showrunning in this case. And this was very cool because it was um uh Greg Daniels, uh Kate, you know, Parks and Wreck and and other things, uh Katie uh Dippold, who of course with Widows Bay, and then Damon Lindelof, who I think it just did he just leave a panel you were on, and then I saw him here.

Is that what you sent me a picture and I said he literally was on stage not ten minutes ago.

Right. And what was that for? Do you remember what were you that he was at? It wasn't the Walking Dead thing, obviously.

No. Um trying to look at you in at my schedule to see if I checked it off.

But I think we got in kind of late. We were get getting in about 11, 1130 or something on that.

And things were kind of going on already, but that was a conscious decision because it was. Originally we were gonna get there early. Yes, and we were gonna wait in line to get a a wrist strap for the next nights or the next day and nights panel, which was the big Marvel event. That was the big event.

Well, let's talk about that for a minute. Yeah, let's stay on that point. Is this the smartest decision we made? So before we got, before we even got to San Diego, and you were talking about, you were really leaning in the direction of you like, I'm gonna do the whole H thing. Like I'm gonna sleep out, whatever I need to do. And I was like the opposite. I'm like, I'm not doing that. And even when we got there, you were still sort of in that mindset, but certainly after day one, I think we both came to an agreement. And and and what was it that we said, Mike? It was, and I think I don't know if it was you that brought it up. I know I was really kind of ranting about it, but it's at a certain point, it was what is your time worth? What is your time worth? And that, and I don't begrudge anybody that went through that, who were certainly fortunate enough to get into Saturday Hall Age. Right. And those that did and didn't, who of course I feel terrible for. But we made uh what I think was what ends up to be the smartest decision. We're not gonna hassle with that. And when we got there on day two, it was clear from the the get-go that wasn't gonna happen anyways, and we certainly weren't willing to wait 17 hours, 24 hours, you know, two days. Like it just wasn't gonna happen.

And and I was I said to you, you know, I'll just suck it up. I'll just sit there, you know, I'll I'll hold the spot. Because that's how much I wanted to see. I knew the Marvel thing was gonna be the hit of the show.

Yeah.

But having experienced Hall H the day before, I was like, no, no, I'm not gonna do that.

It sounded good in theory, but yeah. And and of course, and we'll talk more about it as as we go through. That you know, that turns out to be one of the biggest debacles of the entire con of the entire con. So it should have never happened. Right. Now I still cannot, I'm sort of scrolling through as you are, I think the schedule.

The next thing I saw was Lanterns, Lanelo. Okay, which is the DC show coming to HBO, which is similar.

That's where Lindel that's where Damon Lindelof was.

Okay. Is he a producer?

Yeah, he was in that that panel. Yeah.

So I, you know, have no interest in lanterns, but I I wanted to check it out. And I was pleasantly surprised um how good I thought it was. It looked, and I read afterwards that HBO showed a lot, and they did. I mean, there were a long sequence, and I kept saying, wow, they're really spoiling a lot of stuff. And they did that on purpose because they're very nervous after the way Supergirl played out in theaters. This is the next DC big thing, which is this series Lanterns, which is the Green Lantern, which I know nothing about. Yeah, Nathan Fillion was there, right? Nathan now, he showed up. Now in the series, he's not Green Lantern. It was um oh, what's the actor? Glenn uh Kyle Kyle Chandler. I was calling him. I think his name was Glenn. Kyle Chandler is the current Green Lantern in the series, which people instantly were disappointed about. I was happy. I think Nathan Fillion looks like a goof with the hair. But as you witnessed the day before, a ruckus is going on, and people are thinking, oh, they gotta throw this guy out. And it was Nathan Fillion doing a bit from the audience.

Oh, I I told you about it. I didn't I don't remember that.

You were really I was really dialed in. You were you were hung on my every word. I was out now, but let me ask you so wasn't Garrett Dillahunt in the He was on the stage too, said one sentence, I think. Well, of course that's right. He got like the short shrift or something. Was it Of course Garrett was in Red Right Hand, which of course we've talked about in interview than Elms Brothers and so on and so forth, but yeah.

And he's a funny guy. Yeah. I was looking forward to hearing from him. Right. But after Kyle Chandler, and he has a co-star, a younger guy, that you find out in the I found out in the trailers that he's gonna be the next Green Lantern. The ring that Green Lantern wears is all powerful. You can like block everything with it. But the ring has to call you. It calls out to you.

Yeah, it's like Thor's hammer, you know.

Right. And Kyle Chandler's not ready to give up the ring to this young upstar, an actor I I don't know.

Now, okay, so who was so who was the top uh talent that was on there? So you had Garrett Dillahunt, Kyle Chandler. Kyle Chandler and Nathan Villian. So I think it was Garrett Dillahunt and I think maybe it was Kyle Chandler who both put on Star Wars like Mandalorian helmets or stormtrooper helmets and were walking the exhibit hall.

I guess doing that. Yeah.

Yeah, yeah. So and and Garrett Dillahunt put that out on his social media.

And again, as good as the the uh moderators were in most of the panels, this one I was pretty let down because he really usurped the time. There were two actors. There's somebody that plays Garrett Delahunt's wife in the series, and she has an affair with the wannabe Green Lantern. See, I know all this information just from Hall H. That's how much they were giving away. Um, but he never asked them a single question, and one of the other panelists had to turn to him and say, What do you think about that character? And he was like, Well, I thought it was pretty good, and that was it. So I was really disappointed not to hear from him. I thought Nathan Fillion was funny. He was making remarks about his face being on the building, which it was. Yeah. Was it the Omni or that had the Wolverine?

Yeah, that was the Wolverine. I'm not sure where that was exactly, but somewhere there in the downtown.

But you couldn't miss Nathan Fillion. He was the biggest head in San Diego.

Yeah, it's it's so wild because I'm in the showrunners colliders panel, and Mike, that's the one and only panel that I part took in that whole day. Wow. So what happened was you pretty much set up shop in Hall H.

And every time it let out, I would get closer and closer to right. And the one I really wanted to see next to Marvel was space balls.

SPEAKER_03 15:44

With space balls. Yeah. And so what I did while you're doing this, and my panel ends, it's only like 12 30, 1 o'clock, maybe. Yeah. I go down and I traverse the exhibit hall again, and then I left. And I went downtown to the gas lamp. One of the bars. Yeah, I went down to the gas lamp quarter, and uh, and I and I went and saw the building, the Scrooge and Marley edifice where Johnny Depp also appeared, you know, during that week. It was all over the internet, of course. We put it out on our YouTube channel. And so I was just kind of scoping out downtown, and then I, you know, found a nice little spot to uh set up shopping, get something to eat. I saw some Mike, this was this was one of my favorite cosplays of the entire con, was Walter White for Breaking Bad. I mean, I didn't see him. I just giving out the cash. He's got this big duffel bag of cash, and he was handing it out, had the band-aid, he was all beat up and stuff like that. But uh what I what it what I ended up doing, and you met me there much later, is it's almost five o'clock, and I went to the Omni Hotel Bar and I had cocktails and I was having a nice dinner there and everything, and you eventually joined me. But meanwhile, let's go back to Mike is in the Spaceballs panel.

And if it wasn't for this, I would have been really disappointed. This was my Johnny Depp moment. There's a I'm sending you nonstop pictures while I'm in there. Yes. That was Josh Gadd, Rick Moranis, and yeah, there's Josh Gadd, Rick Moranis, and the actress. Oh God. Daphne Zuniga. Daphne Zuniga. Just was in my head and it just jumped out.

All look great. Yep. Um, Josh needs to get, I think, a little bit of GLP in him. That's true.

That's terrible. He's enjoying the success of the forthcoming Space Ball season.

I don't want to see him go. He's playing the John Candy character. Not that character. He made it very clear. John Candy's not in the movie. He's irreplaceable, but he's playing the same character.

No. And really, I don't have any. Um and Rick Moranis, out of retirement for a what? How many years? People know him from Ghostbusters.

I mean, it's gotta be at least a decade, right? 15 years, at least 20, maybe.

20, yeah, at least. Yep. And he was gonna come back for Honey. For people who know Honey, I shrunk the kids. He was the dad that shrunk his kids and you know, had to tell his wife. You know, he plays he played a great nerd. He was Seymour Krellborn and Little Shop of Hars, which was really great. Steve Martin. Yeah. So to see him, he he was on SCTV for the whole run. Right. And here he was back in Hall. He never had been to Hall H. And it's funny, he said, you know, people thought I was retired. No, I was just negotiating. That's funny. I saw that clip. Which was the line, you know.

So was it worth it for you? Was that worth it, that experience then? It was.

Actually, I liked lanterns. Okay. Shocked to say that I'll probably watch that. That's great. And I Spaceballs was a good hour. I didn't get out of there till five. Mm-hmm. Yeah, right, right. And it was a great way to end the day. And then I met you at the bar.

And then we and then that was well, it didn't end the it didn't end the day. We ended up, what did we do, Mike? We went to a very famous establishment in California that had every day we drove by it, there were cars lined up down the street waiting to get in. In fact, this this this franchise has been in the news, unfortunately, lately, because it was a horrific shooting at one of the chains in like Idaho or something, was In N Out Burger. We went to In N Out Burger, and we actually had to go in. We couldn't, there was no way we could wait in the the traffic line, and we got very lucky and got a space in the parking lot right up front and went in and and uh your order took like a half hour. It was crazy. Now I'd never been to In N Out Burger, you had this was new for me, and I was very excited. Man, it totally was it was a complete letdown to me because yes, the weight uh was totally unexpected. You were in and out, but you only got like a couple of orders of fries or something. You were it was like easy.

I'm not a big fan of In N Out. Yeah, I don't understand. Everyone else on the planet seems to be a huge fan.

Odyssey, I'd rather get a quarter pounder. Like it just was not that big a deal.

I'm watching Matt Damon doing press for um Odyssey, and out of nowhere he starts talking about In N Out Burger being his favorite restaurant bar none. That's well, first of all, I think what happened was your expectation was so high. Was so high, as was mine when I went right, I don't know, 30 years ago. There was no way it was gonna meet that.

Well, and I should also point out, I haven't had a a legitimate real hamburger, right, beef hamburger in years, in years, at least six years. And so I wasn't gonna start with with this was a big deal, and yeah, it just it just was a total letdown. The fries were let down, the burger was let down, but that concluded our day two at Comic Con. So now we're at July twenty fifth, Mike, uh day three. But actually, before we get there, yeah, didn't you have a story about Hall H? Was that on day two? The Jim the Jim uh Lee story.

Yeah, it was I think it was day one. That's whenever you went to Johnny.

So let's back up to the Hall H story.

Back up. Yeah. And you're in Hall H, right? You're sitting beside an empty seat. And you're telling me that half the place is empty. And I'm sitting I'm like, I can see the door to Hall H. And I said to these women, I scanned my press patch and they said, Do you have a ticket? I said, Well, my brother's got a ticket and he's got a seat for me. And they're like, Well, you need the ticket.

Right. And I'm inside talking to security and another staff member. Right. And they're telling you something totally different. Absolutely. Like, oh yeah, there's plenty of, yeah. Yeah. And this was one of the problems. Yeah, this was one of the problems throughout the whole week was you've got all these different factions. You've got people that are affiliated like with the studios and PR. You've got the Comic-Con people, you got San Diego Security, like you've got all these different groups. And none of them are on the same page.

They're not communicating. Correct. So I'm dealing with these two women who are specific to the Johnny Depp panel, right? So yeah, I'm beside myself because I'm looking at the door. I got a press pass. They're not letting me in.

So then you were frustrated for sure.

They go, This is what you're gonna have to do. You're gonna have to go out that door, walk. I'm not even kidding. It's like a half mile around the building. And then I had to queue up for 45 minutes to get into a second queue. I spend two hours going around the building and through these queues. I get to the front and I'm like, they said, Do you have a ticket? And I said, This is like an episode of Seinfeld where George has tickets for everyone.

Yeah.

And the guy's like, Where's your stub? Right. And he's like, I we just did this five minutes ago.

So I'm looking at the women. I said, You told me if I go walk around the building, wait in these queues, you'll let me in. And they said, Well, you don't have a card. I said, I know. I told you that. And you told me to get around that, go in there. Then I you call me. We're on the phone. Right. Go on. And you're like, you're yelling at me.

Just come in. There's an empty seat.

There's tons of empty seats. And I'm trying to say, tell them that they're completely being misled. Like it's not that I'm what I'm being told in here by the official security staff is totally opposite from what I'm looking around at a huge number of open seats all over the place.

There was enough seating, and the line by the time I made it wasn't that long.

So they're yelling at me. No, you can't go in there. You're yelling at me. Come in here.

My head is just going. Yeah, it's aggravated. I did it again the second day.

Again. Walk around the thing. Cue up and cue up again. Shame on me, Dan. Shame on me. Because the first one's on them, the second one's on me.

It gives a new meaning to the term mess hall. You know, because that's really what Hall H turned out to be.

And what we found out, you found out while we were there, is San Diego just got the con till 2030.

So they're going to have it for four more years or three. And they better make some adjustments to the infrastructure of the inn. Yeah. They literally funnel thousands. There was 1.3 million people this year. Yeah.

They're expecting 800,000. One set of stairs that's like this wide to go in and one to come out, same thing. It's right. And nobody, there's no PA system or bullhorns or microphones or anything. So the staff is yelling at the top of their lungs at everybody. Nobody, Mike, every other person didn't know where anything was. You remember? Like we'd go to someone and say, How do we? And they look at you, go, I don't, I really go talk to him. Yeah, they didn't know. They weren't well trained. They weren't well informed. They didn't have maps. Nobody was holding any sort of blueprint of nothing. I I smelled, I think a couple of them were high at one point.

Like I could this stink of weed was like And you know, I eventually got into Hall H with you on that day one after Johnny Depp, because a woman finally walked out and said, The place is empty. Let these poor people in.

Right, right. And I'm like, thank you. And this is another issue where they don't clear the rooms. No. You know, that's another thing. And people camp out or they come in, and Mike's favorite moment of the con. This takes us to day three. Okay, so let's just go to day three. July twenty fifth. First panel, Mike, Futurama panel. We come into a little bit into it as it's going.

We got there early.

Yeah, but it was already going. We were there to see the Simpsons panel. Correct. But the Futurama panel was already going, and Matt Groening was already up there on the stage with some of the people from Futurama, like Billy West and some others. And I think it was during the Simpsons panel, I can't remember, but this couple comes in in front of us, and they've got like uh their child with them. They've got a feast of like they just went to Buffalo Wild Wings and ordered like the whole menu. And they were just there, like you said, to just eat, to just have their job.

Because I'm sitting there and I'm like, these people are having a picnic. Yeah, I was annoyed too, but I was they're not watching the screen. They're not paying attention to anything except you know, feeding each other nachos and pizza. And they had everything that they sold there.

They had it. They it was popcorn and pizza and nachos and good lord. But but the Futurama panel, Mike, it turns out to be better than the Simpsons panel, which was a total dud.

Basically, the whole cast is there. We walk in, they're reading a script, okay, and then by the time we sit down, then what they did is they showed you what it looks like in the you know reading room, and then they showed that episode on screen, so you got to see them who just recorded the voices, you get to see a finished product.

So I'm saying to you, this Simpsons panel better be the highlight of this Comic Con. Right. And then they all leave and the place empties out. So somebody knew something we didn't know.

Now we should say, in fairness, we did get one cool bit in that Simpsons panel, which was the like seven-minute clip, Mike, of this episode that's coming. Talk a little just briefly for those Simpsons fans that are tuning in.

If you remember the episode for those Simpsons fans, I'm talking to you now, but there's an episode where Homer meets Marge and they are in detention together, and that's how they meet. Well, one of the women who was working on the episode, she's been with The Simpsons like 30 years.

Yeah, yeah. I thought I had it with Carolyn, I think was her name, or Caroline. You know, I forgot. Anyways, I should know all her names. But anyways, yeah, she's there.

So she starts saying, I got this idea, her son is now working on The Simpsons with her. And they decide to write an episode where what if Homer and Marge never met? How would their lives be? So they cut between the old footage that people who know that episode where they met in detention to modern day, where Homer's single, miserable, and because he has all the memories still of Marge, except she's not there.

And he has all the memories of the kids. They're not there. And Barney suddenly has it way more together than Homer. He's got a hot girlfriend, and okay, that's her name, Carolyn.

And it was it was a long, what, seven-minute clip, eight minutes, and it was brilliant.

Yes. Like a woman will start to talk and then they'll get cut off by which happened, which happened on the panel as they were talking about it. Now, she's sitting there, and who's the gentleman that was beside Matt, the other oh long time major.

And he does that very thing, and I think he recognizes it in the moment. He cuts Carolyn off, and it's like, whoa, we're and I mentioned to you, I said, Mike, we're pointing to me. Yeah. What they what just, you know, so it's a real it's a real thing. But but it was brilliantly written and it was funny and all the things. It was classic Simpsons. So that was a very cool moment for sure. But that was the only cool moment. And the other thing. Oh, go ahead.

I don't think they even took questions, right? Futurama, they took like 20 questions from the crowd.

Yeah, I don't think the Simpsons did at all. Now, what was cool was Matt Groening in both of those panels was giving out, for those that did ask a question, was giving out sketches of the characters signed by him, and that was kind of cool. But okay. So Futuron Simpsons, we're done with that. We said we're not we're not waiting like an hour and a half for the family guy as much as I love the family guy. Right, right. So what we decided on our list. Yeah, what we decided to do was go. Ashley Eckstein had a panel scheduled uh about her podcast, Hype Friend, and that was at one o'clock on day three in ballroom twenty or somewhere in one of those those rooms. So we went and got in line for that, and this was pretty interesting because we walk in and there's Ashley in the room, and it's it hasn't started yet, and you know, people are you've met her before. I've met her before. She's super nice and very gracious, and and so we come in and you know, people are trickling in, and and her husband is there, David Eckstein, who's a you know, champ world champion baseball player. You tell him all-star. Yeah, an unbelievable resume and an amazing story when you think about breaking into the major leagues given his physical stature. Yeah, he's like five's six. Yeah, he's like five six. So it's pretty it's pretty inspiring. But so what happens is her uh podcast host, Michael James Scott, who is a Broadway star, right, and got called away to work. And you know, work calls and you gotta go. And so Ashley pivots and it becomes a podcast kind of just her, not a podcast, but it becomes a panel with her and David because they happen to both have books coming out next month in September. And so it was a little bit like about that, but it was really just you know about themselves a little bit and their story, and then she opened the floor up a lot to the folks that were there at the panel for just kind of open QA about whatever. And there were some moving moments and people were sharing stories with them, and it got you know, it got kind of serious a few times there.

I didn't know Ashley, but I did know her podcast partner because I saw him Scott, yeah. Yeah, I saw him on Broadway. He played Aladdin without realizing it, right? Yeah, he played the genie, not Aladdin. Right, right. And so I was expecting him, but she pivoted so well and she did she held that room like nobody's business. You know, I I teach public speaking, and and one of the things you gotta teach is how to hold a an audience, and she's great at it.

Yeah, she she was great, and so we we we hung out for that, and then she was going from that to the autograph area, and she was gonna set up shop and sign autographs for like four hours. So I said, Hey, let's go, because you know, I have a little bit of an indirect connection there, we'll just say that. And so we go, and uh, there's another little bit of a debacle with the line situation. Now, while we're waiting, we had the good fortune to see Sergeant Slaughter in the autograph area who we actually saw an interaction between him and a fan, and it was actually quite touching. And, you know, it's like it was really cool.

But to say hi to him, you had to pay 125 bucks.

And it's pretty pricey. But again, we talked about that while we're in line. It's like, what's your time worth, right? And you know, so uh again, not begrudging any any of the talent there. But so we waited, and Ashley, you know, had uh Funko Pops and photos and other things that she could sign. But you know, we really just wanted to say hello to her. And so we get out of here. We were clearly first in line. We were the first people there. Yeah, we were. We were. And it ends up a couple of people end up uh in in front of us. But we get up there and we said, Hey, you know, I'm not gonna take up much of your time, but just wanted to say hello. And uh and you know, you commented on what a great job she did with the panel and pivoting. And most people would have canceled. Right. And so they probably would have. I agree, I agree. And so, you know, we talked about the little bit of a connection that, you know, I have sort of indirectly to her. And at one point she's getting ready, she's gonna take a selfie of us. And I go to open my phone, you know, to the camera app, and I said, Oh, oh, that my cat pops up on my screensaver. Right. And I said, Oh, oh, that's my cat, Ahsoka, which you see right here. And you notice she's got these head markings. So for Star Wars fans that know the character Ahsoka, I named her that because she's got the head markings. She goes, Oh my god, yes. You know, I I was told about that, and yeah, she totally has the head markings. And so we proceed to take this selfie. Yeah. And then here's what made me laugh was, and then realize what an a-hole I am, is she goes, Oh, did you want, you know, kind of pointing to you. I said, No, no, he's good. Just you and me. And we did, as you see, we just took one. And then she kind of like doing the right thing as she always does. She's like, Well, let's take one of all of those. She kind of insisted. She did. Because if it was up to me, you never would have been in that photo. So that was that was cool.

And and I was graciously uh okay with it.

I was like, I know, which but it's terrible. I uh you know, I I I feel uh terrible about it. But you know, I would have gotten over it. But uh so, anyways, there's the proof that we we met Ashley. So great job. Yeah.

The day is supposed to be starting with the Marvel thing, which we wind up going home and watching it.

Well, but that's not where it ends for us. Okay. So we did one last panel after that, and we went to uh it was a panel called From Shorts to Sinners. And this panel, really quickly, it was called From Shorts, From Short Films to Sinners, How Hollywood Creates Virtual Worlds, and You Can Too. This was late in the day. This was like three o'clock, we waited to get into this panel. And what was cool about it is we got to in person see Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Michael Rolla, who, of course, we did a fantastic interview with on the podcast not that long ago. And there's you and I and Michael taking a shot. I think Michael, if you're listening or watching, I might have startled you as you were coming out of the ballroom, and I might have come in a little hot there, but it was just, you know, we were excited to see you. And Mike's first thing he says is, You got robbed, man. You got robbed at the Oscars. And Michael, as gracious as he is, is like it was as expected, is what he said. You know, but that was a nice moment. We got to see him, and then that was it. We walked out and we never went back because we never went on Sunday for anything. But we did experience more of San Diego on Sunday, Mike. So we ended up going to Balboa Park. So talk a little bit about our trip to Balboa Park.

Yeah, you were looking for things to do, and I'm like, well, you know, I there's plenty of things I'd like to do, but you know, I lived here, and I don't think you're gonna be interested in that. But I did bring up Balboa Park and we wound up going there, and you know, again, it's like the hottest day of the year in San Diego.

Yeah, if you can't tell that picture I just held up, we're glistening in the sun.

And you were you were talking about going to the zoo, and I'm like, you don't want to go to the zoo because it's so hot in that concrete jungle.

I could not get Mike to imbibe. I I did what I could, but he wouldn't he wouldn't uh take me up on it. So there we are at a bar. A bar that a lot of famous people go to, Mike, that they stop at.

Yeah, because that bar is just adjacent to the old globe where I used to work. And there's Mike in front of the old globe right there. Where I used to work. And yeah, like there was famous people all the time in there, and man, what was playing but North by Northwest and Cyrene de Bergerac, which we both love, and we just missed it. We just missed the showing at two o'clock.

Yeah. But the the the last thing we did, which turned out to be really fun, it was the train museum. So you told me about this. And so talk about that.

My there's a bunch of museums. There's like 18 museums that make up Balboa Park. And the coolest ones are the auto one and the space one. And then my favorite is always the model train. And it is gigantic to say the least. Now we got there, there was like 20 minutes left before closing time. It was like, I don't know, 3:30, and it closed at four, I think.

So they said, well, if you wait five minutes, it's you know, only six bucks instead of twelve. So we waited five minutes.

But by the time we got in, they were taking all the trains off the track. So you really didn't see it in full operation, but I think you got a a taste for it.

Yeah, this was a nice uh tribute to the old man. We saw this mobile station sign, the Pegasus sign, and and there was the one that you showed me. This was incredible, and I took a shot of it, but there's literally one where here it is here, Mike. This this um car is going through the McDonald's drive-thru here. Let me let me let me here, let me let me find it. Yeah, it's right here. Well, yeah, let's see if you can hear it. It's like, yeah, first window, please. And the car literally drives through the drive-thru and and it it's it was very cool.

It's really cool, and there's such detail that these guys and women put into the this museum. It's just it's obviously Something I wouldn't be surprised if most of them are volunteers. You know, the a lot of them look like senior citizens, and this is kind of a hobby. And it's just it's a great way to kill a couple of hours.

Mike, this was I just just hit me, this was our own planes, trains, and automobiles. Yeah. Planes, trains, trolleys, and automobiles. We did it all to get there, right? And we had some of those Del Griffith Neil Page moments, you know. But there were, to be clear, there were some really cool moments and some fun things. And certainly that was a great way to end. Honestly, I'm glad we made the trek up to Balboa Park. And we had talked about Balboa when we did the Rocky episode. And I forgot I had forgotten to say on that episode that I had heard a clip of Sly talking about where the name Rocky Balboa came from. And it was time that he was spending in Balboa Park when he was kind of, you know, uh working on, I think, the screenplay for for Rocky, what would become Rocky.

I must have missed him by a decade because I used to go there every day and study. Yeah. And you know, that's the kind of place it is.

You just kind of hang out and it's some beautiful landscape and scenery there, and and again, some of the museums there. There's a really a lot to see there. And then they had there was a guy where the famous sort of lily pond was that we took a picture in front of that I held up earlier. And there was this guy there, this musician is just busking there. And he's what does he do, Mike? He kicks into the Ray Charles song from uh Groundhog Day, which we love.

You know, You Don't Know Me. You don't know me, yeah. It was just it was beautiful. So there was a lot of those moments that helped balance out the moments. Like the whole H debacle. Now, I listened to a wrap-up podcast. They had this guy, David Glanzer, on, who's like the chief guy that sort of oversees the communication and stuff related to Comic-Con. And he was on the panel on Sunday, whatever time it was, that they did this thing they do every year, I guess, called Talk Back, where you can come and air, in this case, air out your grievances because a lot of people showed up. Yeah, a lot of people showed up, and a lot of people ripped him a new one. And many people was like, I'm not coming back. This is it. I'm never coming back. It was terrible. So he I I was disappointed in the interview because he really didn't really even change. Didn't really even, in my opinion, didn't really even sincerely apologize for what a lot of the people went through who didn't even end up getting into that experience.

Those people out waited two days. Absolutely. And the big thing was it was gonna be Marvel, then it was an evening with Kevin Smith. I was looking forward to that. Now Kevin Smith winds up being the moderator in Space Balls. So I feel like I got my evening with Kevin Smith in. Right. But uh there was something after that as well. And you know, I I I gave four hours of my life to waiting in line to get in Hall H twice.

As it were, as it was, yeah.

Yeah, and again shame on San Diego for not having better access. They know it by now. Well, it's a long time.

It's the Comic-Con folks that need to figure this out.

And so the City Council, you know, somebody needs to go to the City Council and say, you know, the way you funnel people in and out, we're lucky they don't get trampled.

Yeah, yeah. And and I I don't know. It just it was highly disorganized, and the communication was terrible. I didn't feel there was a lot of sympathy for what people went through on that that uh that final day there on Saturday. Uh I mean Sunday, there was, you know, there wasn't just a lot going on, but the main day, Saturday, the Hall H day. And we made, you know, we it turned out that we made the right decision for us, which was just not to even partake in that at all. And I don't know, it seems like it was somewhat of an anomaly. Like it would figure the year we choose to go and we get the passes to go, it sounds like it's one of their worst years that they've had.

You know, I'm sitting next to a guy in one of the panels, been there 32 years in a row, and all these people bragging about how many years they come. I I don't care if I ever go to another one.

Me neither. And I think that's for me what one of the big takeaways is this like I'm good. You know what I mean? I've I I'll do a smaller con, maybe, but right. That's just not my thing. I'm just not into the hustle and bustle and the you know, the exhibit hall was was overly crowded and there's too many vendors, and it was a bit of a mess.

The worst part is the interview that took place that we did at the beginning. Yeah. If our weekend was like that, meeting people like that, and I would have been like beside myself happy.

Yeah, and that was a great, that was a great sort of on-the-fly thing that happened, and and we we posted that on our YouTube channel as well. Um, and you know, we're we're looking to to have another conversation here, interview on the podcast with another connection that we did make at Comic-Con. Very excited about that. Uh, but yeah, it it it certainly I envisioned it to be quite different from that perspective. And um, and again, I don't want to be ungrateful, the fact that we we certainly saved a lot of money in terms of admission because I think that was another complaint. This is like the tickets just keep getting more and more expensive for for this experience? No way, no way. And we, you know, we traveled a pretty good distance to to go to this thing. And so it was it was pretty frustrating.

It turns out I'm lucky I even got there. I talked about the trip, you know, I was uh like bouncing off craters on the way there. Then when when I get home, there's a big thing. I think you sent it to me. It was my local news, and you send me this clip about all these cancellations to San Diego from jet blue because of weather. There was some kind of funky weather system that tried to keep me from experiencing.

There's other things too. It's it's there's a lot of it's not just weather related that's impacting that. There were some other contributing factors. But yeah, so you know, again, some highs, some lows, as I said on part one, you know, some pros and some comic-cons. And so, but you know, again, it wasn't a total loss. We certainly um saw some cool panels, met some cool people, uh, saw some interesting things, saw some some good sites in San Diego. We saw that shredding the multiverse, which was a cool experience there up at UC San Diego. Um, but they definitely they've gotta they've gotta figure this out. This this can't be the experience for people going forward. It certainly won't be ours because we won't be there unless we're on a panel, not gonna happen. Just not gonna happen.

And you know, my plan is to you know move back to San Diego. I've said that for ten years. And you know, it's his long-term plan, folks. But when I was there, I was plugged in to a lot of city planners, people that were somebody in the community that could have an impact on this. Unfortunately, I don't know, you know, I haven't kept touch with anybody.

Right. Yeah, so it did us no good there.

So it did us no good there. But, you know, if I get ensconced, I that I will make it my you know, my duty in life to to fix that debacle.

Those were good moments, though, you know, just kind of those interactions and and uh just out and about town and and uh so you know it's certainly it's not gonna dissuade me from getting back to San Diego, obviously. That that'll certainly be in the in the future in the cards. But but Comic Con, I'm glad I'm glad to say we did it. Yeah. But uh geez, if they don't if they don't fix that thing, oof, I would mess. It's a mess.

You know, it brings me back to the times I was there before, and I always said to you, I don't know why, but I never got into Hall H. Now I know why.

Well, guy I played pickleball with uh his daughter, Caroline. She they they went many years and she slept out, did the whole thing, and you know, I think her experiences from what I can gather were were positive. So I think again, we just the stars weren't aligned for this particular visit.

And it should have been. I mean, this is big money for San Diego. There are businesses downtown that survive on this week alone. This week makes their whole year. And the city council, they need to do something about the trolley right there, needs to be re-looked at how you get on and off. And I'm surprised they don't have more. Uh people get hit by trolleys because it's not the safest environment. The way they funnel people, I mean terrible.

Terrible. Yeah, it's that venue it it can't it can in my estimation, it can no longer support the scale and scope of this event.

It's uh and and think about the parking structure. And I found this out talking to one of the workers. They get zero parking. So they get there the way we get there, the trolley or the bus. That's crazy.

I and if you saw, I don't know, I meant to point it out to you, but if you saw the parking garage, it was it was like for a 15,000 seat venue, maybe.

It's easier to get in and out. And I think it's bigger. I think it's bigger. There's two sides to it. Like there's two different wings to it here. It's humongous.

The only complaint I had was there was no handicap parking. I mean, there was, but there was like two spots, you know, and then that was it.

Yeah. Well, you know, thankfully, I mean, say what you will about the trolley, but that got us in and out every day. So Right. Uh I wouldn't I wouldn't say hang around certain trolley stations after midnight, perhaps, because we saw some that was a whole different level of cosplay, Mike, that we saw there. I saw a rat go by at one point. Remember that? The little rat scene. I'm watching it.

I'm like, that's a rat. So yeah. I will cherish the book that I won that you did not. I can't believe you won that book. It's a great book. I'm gonna have to I haven't perused it yet, but it's a really thick book on the history of Comic-Con. So I'm looking forward to it. And you know, again, met Judith O'Day, like the Johnny Depp thing. There were definitely highlights for sure. So there were moments that made me feel the Comic Con experience, but overall, no. And I and if you're asking for a recommendation from us, it's a it's a hell no, don't go. Yeah.

And for me, the biggest disappointment had to be The Simpsons. Yeah, it really was disappointing.

It really was I was disappointed with. It really was disappointing. You know, that one of them can't be there. You know, we not one of them. You can't get a Hank Azaria to show up. Come on, guys. That's ridiculous.

I mean, they're always, and I think they gave it away in the short time that they had. So one of the guys said, Don't ask us about the movie. That'll be for next year. So I bet next year they're gonna load up because the Simpsons movie two is coming.

And we've been saying it's gonna be interesting the conversations we're gonna be having over the next several weeks on the podcast, because I think you're gonna hear a sort of a change in the tone in our conversations about the box office and and where it's you know, the current state and where we think it's heading. And um, as of this recording, I'm I'm hours away from going to see Spider-Man and that thing, at five days it took to cross the billion-dollar mark. That's insane.

And people are declaring that movies are back. I'm not willing to go there yet. But given the Odyssey and the performance of Spider-Man so far and the Avengers upcoming, I'm excited.

No, it's Christopher Noland. It's Christopher Nolan. You've got every star imaginable in this thing. So so no, I think because I think with Nolan at the helm, you know what you're getting, right? And he's proven it time and time again from you go back to Memento and the Dark Knight trilogy and Oppenheimer, and it just it so he's a home run. He is box office gold.
