Relationships, Sex and Health Education recently became statutory in English schools, creating a significant opportunity to engage positively with young people on issues that are deeply relevant to their everyday lives. However, RSHE policy carries challenges and has been met with resistance in some communities. There is now a need for greater visibility and examples of RSHE practice that is faith-sensitive and LGBT-inclusive.

In this episode of the BERA podcast, Sexualities and Gender SIG convenors Fin Cullen and Joshua Heyes interview Dr Anna Carlile, Senior Lecturer in Education at Goldsmith’s University. Anna, Fin and Josh discuss the challenges and opportunities of doing inclusive RSHE in culturally and religiously diverse communities. Anna shares her experience of negotiating RSHE policy in dialogue with LGBT and faith partners and the power of allyship focusing on mutual respect and kindness.
