Vira:It's actually, it's actually still very much morning for me and it's already like afternoon for where you are.
Uzair:See, I guess that's what happens when we live on opposite ends of the country, right? You get to enjoy sunshine a bit longer. I get to go to sleep a bit earlier.
Vira:I don't get to enjoy the sunshine because I'm in Vancouver. But the idea is. You're right, you're right. Yeah. By the way, Uzair is fellow Canadian as well, so. So that's nice to have Canadian on this call.
Uzair:Maple syrup all the way, all that fun stuff.

Uzair:Perfect.
Vira:Okay. I kind of know the answer to the first one, but still. Cat person or dog Person.
Uzair:No spoilers. But definitely, you know, I think my three cats would show you that I'm very much a cat person.
Vira:And I hope we can hear them today on the background, because they are.
Uzair:I hope so. If not, I'll just make some meow noises in the background.
Vira:So we have not one guest, but four guests today.
Uzair:Exactly. It's a special day.
Vira:Awesome. Awesome. Texting or talking?
Uzair:Talking, definitely talking.
Vira:Sending greeting cards or getting them.
Uzair:I think because of, like, the way, like, my greetings come across. I'm definitely better at receiving them than people receiving my greeting cards. They're usually happy birthday. Have another one. You know, I mean, something like that. So when it definitely a receiving person.
Vira:Cute. Okay, cool. What else? A favorite milkshake flavor?
Uzair:Oh, mango. Mango. Hands down.
Vira:This is like so random. Usually I. I'm Pakistani.
Uzair:I'm from Pakistan. We have good mangoes.
Vira:Oh, ok. Mangalasi. Is that what you're talking about?
Uzair:Exactly. If Arpit's listening to this. Arpit, I know you understand the importance.
Vira:Shout out to you, Arpit. Yes. Mangalassies are the best. So early bird or night owl?
Uzair:I'm definitely a night owl and I blame the three cats for that. They tend to want to wake up right as soon as the clock hits midnight. So, yeah, definitely a night owl.
Vira:Awesome. Okay, and the last one, if you had a theme song every time you walked into the room, what would it be?
Uzair:Go go, Power Rangers. The theme song to Mighty Morphin Power Rang would definitely have to be it.
Vira:You didn't even think about it. You were like, boom, here's the answer.
Uzair:Because I had it. I had it set. I had it set. I was ready. I've been waiting for this question, Vira.
Vira:You've been preparing for this question for your entire life. That's awesome.
Uzair:Exactly.
Vira:Cool. Well, there. I'm really happy that you're the guest on the podcast today because we will be talking for all of the awesome ideas for May campaigns, all the awesome content ideas. And I know you, you have a bunch of them. And also I know that you have one holiday that you're like, particularly excited about in May.
Uzair:Oh, yes. Oh, yes.
Vira:But before we go there, I don't want to spoil or anything. I'm just going to quickly cover all of the May monthly holidays and weekly holidays, like observances and stuff. So it can be kind of like a theme of the month for you. So May is a national Inventors month. I don't know how you can, like, tie it with your email marketing strategy, but apparently it's a national Inventor's month.
Uzair:I guess you could invent some campaigns for this month.
Vira:You better. You better invent some campaigns in May. Yeah. It's also national Physical Fitness and Sports Month, which is, like, really easy to tie with your email campaigns, especially if you are in the health and fitness industry. Right. National Smile Month. I think every month is a smile month in Canada. Canadians are very.
Uzair:It's King's Canadians. Right? There you go. It's the Smiley country.
Vira:Smiley country.
Uzair:Smile cookies. If people get that reference, you're Canadian. The smile cookie campaigns that runs every few months or every year.
Vira:I have no idea what you're talking about. And I got my passport like three years ago, so.
Uzair:I'm gonna need to speak with my boy Trudeau on that. And we gotta revise the questioning.
Vira:My boy. Cool. And the weekly holidays, some pretty cool ones, too. So May 1st to 7th is a national small business week. And honestly, most of you guys who are listening to us, you're small business owners or like you're working for a small business. You can do so much with this topic. You can give that behind the scenes look. And we were like, literally talking about it today on our project. You can, like, give the behind the scene looks on your team and it just, like, put that, like, human face on your brand. Right. So so much you can do with it. Also, May 1st to 7th is a national pet week. So if you're a pet owner or if you're aspiring pet owner, if you have a pet, if you want to have a pet, if you're in pet industry, so much you can do here. Seriously. May 2 to 6 is a teacher appreciation week. May 8 to 15 is a work at home mom's week. And I know that a lot of our fellow project manager will be celebrating probably.
Uzair:Oh, yeah. Shout out to all of them.
Vira:Shout out to all of them amazing moms who are doing it all. May 22 to May 28 is a national backyard Games week. Whatever it means. Backyard Games. Yeah. So maybe you can come up with some creative campaigns. Maybe you can, like, gamify your campaigns in the months of May.
Uzair:Yeah.
Vira:Yeah.
Uzair:So that makes sense.
Vira:The holiday that you are the most excited about in May. What is it? What is the holiday?
Uzair:Come on. It's in the name. It's May the fourth be with you. I mean, it's. It's got to be May the fourth, 100%. Growing up, I was a huge Star wars fan. My brother's been a huge fan. You know, my cousins and I, we all got Together and saved up to get the Millennium Falcon LEGO set. And this is before, like they made the big one that they have nowadays. And you know, Star wars has always been around. And just seeing the different ways companies can tie into May 4th has been really exciting to see over the years because it's been like such a wide variety of companies, right? Like you have companies like McDonald', Volkswagen. I know Volkswagen. A lot of people, if you've seen some of the super bowl ads and things like that where they had the father pretend he's using the Force to lock the car, even though it's, you know, the car's standard feature to have a lock, you know which one I'm talking about. Yeah, the father. Yeah, the kid thinks he's Darth Vader. Like, you know, those are really cute and those are really, really good tie ins. And so sometimes customers can have really good tie ins and then sometimes customers can have really, you know, cheesy tie ins. And that might not always work. Like, I know McDonald's, they had a campaign where they did. They said use the Force Frywalker. And I don't know why, but Frywalker just. It's hit or miss, right? Like it hits and misses for some, I guess. But yeah, no, May the fourth is definitely something I've been excited for. And it's crazy that, you know, it's been celebrated since back in like 1979. Apparently that's when it was first celebrated. So it's been around for a long time. So it's definitely a worldwide cultural phenomenon.
Vira:It's a very like random holiday. I had no idea it existed before I came to Canada. Like there's like so many random holidays you guys celebrate, but this is definitely one of them. And I like how you said that you don't necessarily have to sell stuff with like Star wars on them to like tie that topic in. Right.
Uzair:That's exactly like I know in some cases, like for example, there was like a furniture store and what they ended up doing for their Star wars campaign was that they did like a dark versus light side. So they had like dark colored furniture representing, you know, the Sith and then they had the light colored furniture.
Vira:Oh, that's fun.
Uzair:The Jedi and everything. Right? So there was a really, really unique tie in, you know, to tie something like furniture in with, you know, space and you know, like space wars and all that kind of stuff. So it was a really nice, unique combination.
Vira:That's for sure. Are you going to be celebrating this year? Are you going to do anything fun?
Uzair:100% I got to watch, you know, episode three. I got to have my milkshake, my mango milkshake. Make sure I got the day booked off. It'll be a good day. What about you? You got in any exciting, Any favorite?
Vira:Maybe. Maybe I'm going to. I'm going to. Maybe I'm going to watch it. Finally. The Star Wars. Like, honestly, I've started it so many times, I've never finished it. It's. I don't know, maybe I was like too young for Star wars, but come on, I'm like 30 now.
Uzair:I think. I think everyone listening is going to want to ask, like, which one did you start with? Did you go?
Vira:I started. I started from, I don't know, the oldest one, the first ever release. I was going in the order they were released, but apparently it's not the right order. Right.
Uzair:I mean, to me, I think that could be like, it depends, right, if you want to watch it in chronological order. But I find that watching it how the rest of the world watched it might be the best way to go about it. Like being able to experience like, oh, this is that like. Because I know they did the last three movies first. The, you know, the first three movies in the second and then like the final actual last three movies. So, yeah, it's been all over the place, but 100%, like just seeing the younger versions of themselves, supposedly, like, it's a nice little way to watch it.
Vira:Yeah.
Uzair:I'm gonna write down on my notes the message you on May. In our team, we're all gonna message you may 4th.
Vira:Yes, please. So the holiday I'm personally excited about is Cinco de Mayo. It's May 5th. It's not necessarily like a holiday that we celebrate the right way. Literally. Cinco de Mayo, it's translated the 5th of May from Spanish. And originally this like. Yeah, I guess I'm not a Spanish speaker myself, although I've been wanted to like learn this language for so long. So who knows, maybe this May 5th.
Uzair:Fingers crossed. Something Star wars and Spanish.
Vira:You got a busy, busy May, man. That's a busy, busy week for me for sure. So, yeah, it's May the fifth. The holiday originally started as a celebration of the date of the Mexican army winning over the French army during the Franco Mexican War. But obviously that's not what we celebrate here in Northern America. We celebrate Mexican culture, we celebrate Mexican heritage, tacos, guacamole, all that like, good Mexican stuff that we like. And yeah, you don't necessarily have to sell Mexican stuff to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Here are some really cool subject lines from the emails that I really loved last year. So one was, I don't remember all of the brands. This is just like a random list of the subject lines. But let's talk about it. So like, let's talk about it. That ones that I liked have a mechscillent day. I think it's so smart. Or like, Sync de Mayo is not your ordinary holiday.
Uzair:Oh, come on.
Vira:So this, like, this one was good one, right? This was a good one. Or like, you had me at tacos. They're not wrong.
Uzair:You always have me at anyone mentions tacos. You got me. I'm there.
Vira:Yeah. Or you have to guac to be kidding me. You have guac to be kidding me.
Uzair:You have guac to be kidding me.
Vira:So that's. That's a bit of an obvious one, but I loved it. I love that last one. Yeah. So when you're like sending an email, it doesn't necessarily have to be anything. You don't have to be selling like guacamole to create something Cinco de Mayo related. But yeah, maybe you can add some red and white and green colors to your emails. Maybe you can look. Make it look a bit Mexican. You can just make it a bit like, fun.
Uzair:Exactly. I feel like, you know, with the, you know, May 4, you know, Star wars with May 5, the Cinco de Mayo, like, it doesn't have to be like that specific thing, but, you know, the campaigns could also be based off of what those, you know, holidays signify, what they stand for, that kind of thing. So you can always like, you know, pinpoint a theme instead of just having to, like, go with the entire message. Like with Star wars, you know, instead of having it be completely about Star wars, they took the light and dark theme. With Cinco de Mayo, you know, it's a holiday you can go about, you know, having fun being in that, you know, there's a lot of things you can take from, from there for sure.
Vira:And by the way, you don't need to like, celebrate each and every holiday that we will be talking about because that's going to be a busy month for you. Just like pick your favorite busy year. I guess. I guess there are like so many weird and random holidays and we are here for them. I like, I love all those holidays. National Tuesday. Are you kidding me? It's like things ever. It's in February, by the way. Okay, cool. So that's my tips.
Uzair:So that would bring up to one of my favorite holidays. And I'm so glad that we have something like this. It's May 6, which is actually international no Diet day. So my cat Luna, she's going to be really excited about this one just because for the past two months we've put her on a diet. She was getting a few too many treats while she was over at my parents house. Shout out to them, they love my cats as much, if not more than me. So they had her eaten real good for the last few months. So yeah, so international no Diet day is definitely on the calendar for my cat. And so, yeah, so that one is, you know, is more so of an annual celebration of body acceptance, body shape and, you know, the having diversity amongst us. And so this might not, you know, work out for promoting fitness and diet products, but at the same time it can be a real seller if done right. You know, you can always focus on acceptance and, you know, love yourself and those kind of themes with this day. And those would work really well to go hand in hand with the no diet.
Vira:Yeah, that's a good one. That's a good one.
Uzair:Or treat yourself I think would be like the best message to get across. Like, treat yourself today, you deserve it.
Vira:Yeah, that's a good one. And again, you don't have to be in the fitness or like dieting industry to talk about this day. Yeah. Wait, Luna, is that the one that was wearing the onesie, like the suit or. That was a different one.
Uzair:That was Nilo. That's my youngest. She's the one you saw earlier today.
Vira:Oh my goodness. That like message. Yeah, tell us, tell us a story. Because like people like what onesie?
Uzair:Okay, so I don't always put onesies on my cats. I. People might be a bit alarmed. Yes, she did look very cute. Would I do it again? 100%. But the reason behind this was she got spayed recently. And so usually, you know, with your cats, they put a cone around them. And so my vet, she was like, would you prefer a cone or a onesie? Now I don't know about you, but if anytime someone asks me, would you rather see your cat in a plastic cone or in a cute onesie? I'm gonna go with the onesie option. And I'm so glad I did. Yes, it was definitely worth it. So yeah, she had that on for a week.
Vira:Oh my goodness. That's probably like the message in our random Slack channel that collected the most like likes and hearts.
Uzair:I gotta dress up my cast more often for clout.
Vira:Yeah, you're one of that people.
Uzair:I'M one of those. I'm one of those.
Vira:One of those like you're dressing up your. Your cats for. For no reason kind of guy.
Uzair:Wait till Halloween.
Vira:Awesome. Yeah. Oh, gosh, I'm looking forward to that. So May 8th as the big one. It's actually one of the biggest holidays in the month of May is Mother's Day. And we just like discussed it with you. Uzair. Right. That a lot of brands and your clients in particular, you guys are starting Mother's Day campaign like way early, Right?
Uzair:Exactly. Yeah. So, like when it comes to Mother's Day. Right. Like I, I had this misunderstanding as well when I first started was just like, you know, the day of a certain event is the day of that event sale or some things like that. Right. But issue with that would be. So for Mother's Day, if we did end up having our Mother's Day sales during the weekend of Mother's Day, the customers wouldn't receive their product until one or two days later due to shipping. Right. So for that reason, we want to have our campaign scheduled early enough so that they're guaranteed to have those gifts to be able to give them on Mother's Day kind of thing. So that's what we went with our campaigns. And that was the strategy behind that, was that we wanted to have the Mother's Day sale a bit earlier. But what that would do is that would give us time to have it shipped out, make sure our customers receive it and are able to give it to their loved ones on that day.
Vira:Yeah, no, I think it's a really good idea and I love how some brands have starting to like communicate with empathy before the Mother's Day, providing that some customers might not have like their mom around or they are, they might have like a difficult relationship with mom or something. So last year I received like one of those emails that offered you to opt out of Mother's Day communication and opt out of Father Day communications just because this topic might be a bit like triggering to some people. Yeah. So I thought it was very like nice little touch and basically all you have to do is click one link and then like in Klaviyo, how it would work, it would probably like when you click on the link, it would create the custom property and then we could like exclude those people from the campaigns. I think it's a really nice touch.
Uzair:No, no, a hundred percent. It's a really very thoughtful touch indeed. For sure.
Vira:Mm. And for those like last minute Mother's Day shoppers, like which I'm Definitely, like, one of them. Sorry, Mom. But I'm definitely gonna get on that list. Yeah. Like, sending a gift card or like a gift certificate campaign is an excellent idea. Like the day before Mother's Day or even on the Mother's Day, you can easily, like, create that, like, gift card coupon on your Shopify. So you can say something like, still haven't gotten a gift for your mom? So this is what you need. So you're like, literally go with your credit card, purchase it, and in a minute you have a gift for your monthly state.
Uzair:Yeah, that's a really good idea. That fixes, you know, the issue with shipping. Right. Like, the code you can send over right away. So, yeah, 100%. Having the gift card is a really smart idea.
Vira:Yeah. Yeah. And it's really easy to do. I might be wrong, but I think it's like a standard feature in Shopify where you can like, create sort of like a gift card coupon code. But there are also, like, a lot of different apps on Shopify that can help you to do that. But what I would recommend you to do, and that's something that we have done with my clients, they basically have gift cards as a separate. Listed as a separate product, you know, on their website. So person can like, literally add the cart to their, add the gift card to their cart and then like, check it out as a normal product with like a gift card and stuff. It's all automated process, so you don't need to do a thing. And then you will receive that discount code or like the coupon code to your email, which is, like, really convenient.
Uzair:Yeah, really convenient. Yeah, easy enough.
Vira:Other, like, random holidays in May that I'm excited about is May 16th. Do something good for your neighbor day. That's a day where you can, I don't know, maybe do the buy one, get one free kind of campaign or like, buy one, get one 50% off, and you can share this second product with your neighbor or something like that. You know what I mean? Right. So you can do a lot with this campaign. And May 28th is actually burger day, which is very random them, but I will be, I will be celebrating it for sure.
Uzair:Yeah, sign me up. That sounds delicious.
Vira:And it's very random, but I really love McDonald's burgers. I know.
Uzair:Oh, no, trust me. I, I, I can, I, I just want to let you know I'm on your side with this. Like, I understand they can get some hate, but listen, nothing hits like a 2am McDonald's run when everything else is closed. That's all I'm gonna say. McDonald's was there for us when no one else was. Ones.
Vira:I know, I know, like in the middle of the night. And one thing I realized recently because like I'm from Ukraine and McDonald's is in Europe, they are a bit more like upscale. I don't know if you've like been to like other. McDonald's is not in the States, but like in Europe they use like better quality ingredients. They use like the designs, like interior designs are better. They honestly taste different. Like here, McDonald's is probably like the worst, the cheapest food you can get there. You can take someone for a date in McDonald's that's like the legit, which is hilarious.
Uzair:That reminds me, one of the first dates me and my wife went on was actually to a McDonald's back home.
Vira:And again.
Uzair:And that's going based off of what you're saying, right? Like the McDonald's, like in Pakistan, for example, they put a lot of focus on the interior sitting space and how it looks and everything like that. Because not like people will use the drive through for sure, but there's going to be, I want to see at least like three to four times more people going to dine in at McDonald's than not. Right. So just because it's one of those established names where people know, you know, I mean, so it's more, it's definitely more of like an indoor dining experience there than over here. It's more of like a grab and go kind of thing. Right?
Vira:Like grab and go.
Uzair:Exactly. 100%. You got to have McDonald's from different countries to a get, you know, the different menus different countries have. Right. So try some of their different McFlurry flavors and whatnot. And be the Pakistani McDonald's. It actually gives out free ice cream. Like these little miniature ice cream cones. And the ice cream cone. Yeah. But the size of the cone is, I want to say roughly the size of your thumb. Like when I say mini, I'm talking many.
Vira:I wanna, I wanna see that. They don't do that in Canada or in the States.
Uzair:Our machines are always broken. Right. So you can imagine just how many times we'd actually get it. Exactly.
Vira:Actually, one thing I realized, and I feel like we were talking about McDonald's more than about the campaigns, but whatever. I'm like excited about make mini cheeseburger day. One thing I realized is that in, in Canada, cheeseburger and ha, they are actually in the snack section, not in the like the burger or like the meal section, they are actually in the next section.
Uzair:So they never.
Vira:That's interesting because for me, like, growing up, it was a meal. It was like if we were going to McDonald's, like, the cheeseburger.
Uzair:That was it. You didn't have anything else.
Vira:That was it. That was it. I was, like, full with, like, one cheeseburger. And apparently it's a snack. Oh, well. Oh, well. So, yeah. May 28th. Let's celebrate it, guys.
Uzair:No. 100%. It's listed. I'm gonna make sure we get, like, a team event. Have everyone jump on Zoom on May 28 with a burger, your choice of which one, and go from there.
Vira:That's a good one.
Uzair:And that would bring us pretty much to the last day of May, which is May 30th. And so that in the States is Memorial Day. And one of the things I really like about Memorial Day is because it has so many different meanings, Right. You know, it can stand for so many different themes. It has that America, that American patriotism built in. Right. It's also the unofficial start of summer. So a lot of people, you know, they're getting ready to hit the beach. They're getting ready for those long road trips. It also means seeing family and having those family gatherings for the summer, having those backyard barbecues, and then, you know, those long weekends off from work where, you know, you have an extra day and you end up making a little getaway plan out of it. So there's a lot of different, you know, campaign ideas you can come up with. So, you know, you can always come up with something fun and patriotic, you know, and something that. That can tie in with patriotism. So, you know, for example, one of our clients, Chubby, they had clients. Oh, sorry. So what's it called? So for some companies out there, they've. What they do on this day is they'll, you know, they highlight their patriotic looking items. Well, that'll feature you American flags or other things amongst them. Right. Whereas other companies, they might go down the heartwarming route, so they'll. They'll end up having a more heartfelt message going out, you know, giving a thank you to everyone and just using that as, like, to build, you know, their image and to just really get in touch with their customer base. Right. And finally, again, that start of the summer. Right. So for most companies, for most people, Memorial Day will represent, you know, the start of summer, so that a lot of people will use their long weekend to get outdoors to go to the beach, get some new clothes, you know, all that all that stuff you've been waiting on for that one nice weekend, this is that weekend. So that started the summer, that kind of thing. So a lot of people will choose to tie in their campaigns with that to kind of, like, you know, encourage their customers to get up and go out and that sort of thing. Enjoy the sunshine, all that fun stuff.
Vira:No, definitely. At first, I didn't realize, like, why all of the companies are sending, like, discount codes on Memorial Day. Isn't it, like, the day to commemorate all the fallen soldiers and everything? But apparently this holiday has a bit of a different meaning or, like, associations with it because it's the first long weekend of summer. Right. So people are celebrating, like, summer. Some, of course, celebrating, like, Memorial Day as it is. But I think you can do a lot of things with it, that's for sure. Yeah.
Uzair:100%. Definitely the one we're most looking forward to.
Vira:Wait, do we have anything in Canada for that weekend? We do. It's like a Victoria Day or something.
Uzair:Exactly, exactly.
Vira:We.
Uzair:I'm pretty sure we have Victoria Day. Yeah,
Vira:That's random.
Uzair:We try to copy. We got to make sure.
Vira:Because we're, like, celebrating, like, English Queen or like Queen of breed breaking.
Uzair:Exactly.
Vira:Victoria. So technically, they are our rulers, right? The. The Queen of England is like, she's.
Uzair:Yes, Technically, she shows up on her money, I think. I think that's pretty much it. But, yeah, so hers is on May 23rd. So, yeah, we got our long weekend a earlier because, you know, we're nicer. So we get to have our weekend a week early. But, yeah, no, Victoria Day.
Vira:Yes, that's the thing. Victoria Day.
Uzair:I know we have fireworks in Canada for that.
Vira:Yeah. And we don't celebrate fourth of July, but we celebrate the first of July, which is Canada Day. So we do tend to have our holidays, like, around American holidays, just because it's so, like, convenient, because we all, like, work with, like, Americans all the time. So our long weekends are usually the same time. Most of the times.
Uzair:Most of the time, exactly.
Vira:Yeah. Awesome. So here you have them, guys. Few ideas for Making Pains. I hope they were, like, insightful to you. Those ideas. Definitely. Celebrate May the fourth. Definitely do something fun and exciting for National Burger Day, May 28. And I hope you got inspired from our talking about the cats and McDonald's. And.
Uzair:Listen, I just want to say the two campaigns that stood out to me the most were also Burger Day and May the fourth. So I'm glad we're on the same wavelength.
Vira:There we are on the same page. Here. Uzair. Anyways. Well, Uzir, thank you so much for joining me.
Uzair:Thank you so much for having me.
Vira:It was like so much fun having you here. Yeah, you should definitely.
Uzair:I will. I definitely got hungrier than when I started. So keep that in mind for next time to make sure I keep snacks on me in case we decide to start talking about burgers. Maybe we'll talk about tacos. Pizza. We'll go down the menu. We'll figure something out.
Vira:Yes, I think we should do it regular. Like every month Uzir appears with menu. Random random ideas. Yes. Random restaurant recommendation and cat talk. Let's. Let's do it. Or wants to think. Awesome. Thank you so much for coming. Uzair.
