Setting The Stage: Sciatica Focus

Hey Brie. Today we're talking about something that is far too common and can be absolutely debilitating. And that's sciatica and low back pain. And we both have our own stories that we're going to share tonight. So if you've ever had that deep ache in your lower back or sharp pain shooting down your leg, or numbness tingling, burning, or difficulty walking, you know how frightening and miserable sciatica can be. The beauty is homeopathy is phenomenal for both acute pain and long-term healing. And again, I'm speaking from experience. Tonight we're going to cover what sciatica actually is, what causes it, the top homeopathic remedies, how to match sensations and locations, natural supports that really help. And Brie, why don't you kick us off with what sciatica really is?

What Sciatica Is And Why It Hurts

Okay. Well, it's awful, is what it is. Really? But what it actually clinically is, um, is pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve. And that sciatic nerve, which I learned from my experience, runs from the lower back down through the buttocks, like through a muscle in your butt, down the back of your thigh, into your calf, sometimes all the way to your foot. I have both I have one local experience and one all the way to my foot experience. And I just didn't realize things could hurt so bad. Um, symptoms can include, and I mean, if it's sciatica truly, this will probably be a few of them, sharp or shooting pain, burning pain, numbness and tingling, um, maybe weakness in the leg, pain worse from sitting or from bending and lifting. Um, typically is accompanied with some kind of hip or butt pain, lower back stiffness. And it can, it can be constant or it can come in waves or like episodes, if you will. Um, there are a lot of causes that can trigger sciatica. Maybe that I don't know that's the most common or what's the most common. All of these are probably equally common. Herniated disks. So that disc material presses on the nerve and compresses that, which then causes that pain. Pyriformis syndrome. And that's what I had. The piriformis, it tight, that's the muscle that the sciatic nerve runs through. And when that is tight or injured, that compresses the sciatic nerve as well. Um, spinal misalignment. So if your pelvis, sacrum, or lumbar spine is rotated or tilted, that can cause sciatica and injury. This could be falling, but it could also be lifting or twisting. That could include a herniated disc as well in there. Pregnancy, praise God for babies. They're so great and wonderful. And I really did love being pregnant, but it is can be bad for sciatica. This is very, unfortunately, very common from baby position hormones, get weight gain, um, inflammation, so arthritis or swelling around the nerve can do that as well. And honestly, sometimes being sedentary, just a sedentary lifestyle. So when you're sitting in one position for too long all the time, can compress your nerves. So true sciatica is a mechanical issue, but homeopathy does help with the inflammation in your body, with nerve pain, muscle spasming, and the overall healing of those things as well.

Common Triggers And Root Causes

Yeah. Do you want to share your experience and which remedies ended up helping you?

Yeah. I'll do it. Um, I'll give a nutshell version. I had two. One was I injured myself running. I fell and my I didn't know this, but my knee, like falling on my knee, um, it like pulled my piriformis. I didn't even know what a piriformis was. And that caused severe, that was true localized sciatica, just where that injury was. So I did chiropractic care at the time. I didn't know remedies and some physical therapy stuff, and it got better. The most recent last year, I don't even know exactly what happened. Um, probably some form of inflammation, followed by what I found out later was definitely misalignment. Like one of my hips was pretty tilted. I don't have any herniations. Um, and my piriformis was again the same one I'd injured all those years ago, was very tight. And so those two things combined, they called it double crush or something. Like my nerve was being pinched in two spots. And so that went all the way down the back of my leg, down my calf, into my foot. I've had numbness still, and I still have some numbness left. Um, and that was the most painful experience of my life. I had to get a wheelchair to get back to my car one day because the pain was so severe. And um, I mean, I've done a lot of things now that I know more, um, including like CFT, that's body work, piropractic care. I have a physical therapist, sister-in-law, so she helped me a lot. But remedy-wise, I made a combo and my husband heard his back too and had some sciatic pain of bryonia, magphoss. It's probably sitting right by me. Arnica, I think it was four. And but magphoss and oh hypericum, of course. So Arnica, Hypericum, Bryonia, and Magphoss. Magphoss for some of the spasming muscles that can often accompany that kind of pain. So that combo really did take the edge off for my husband as well. He used 1M. I stuck to 200 because the one time I got a little crazy and tried a 1M, my leg was on fire like all night. And I just out of desperation, you know, even though I know if it works, don't you don't need to change. I was like, I am so desperate. Don't do what I did. 200 works worked for me well and took the edge off. So yeah, here I am now so much better. The numbness, but it was structural. I had to get some other like adjusting done.

Did you use did you use lightning patches for it? I did. Do you remember?

I used um, yeah, x39 was a normal one, and then I used Aeon. Eon? Aon, yeah.

Did I did you do X49 or just Aon? Okay. No, X39. Well, there's X39 and there's X49.

Brie’s Two Sciatica Journeys

Oh, no, so just X39 and Aeon. So I did use those life wave patches. Well, I got I hit all of it hard at one point. One the day I had to use a wheelchair. I was like, listen, I gotta do something here. And I took some high like therapeutic doses of some supplements, like anti-inflammatory supplements. I didn't go crazy, but I did take a couple of them alongside the life wave patches, made sure I was drinking electrolytes every single day and doing some of that bodywork stuff with my remedies.

Yeah. Well, um, I remember, yeah, I remember how awful that was for you. That was that was really cool. I think that was just that was just last year.

It was, yeah.

Melissa’s Chiropractic Story And Lessons

So my I have a couple of experiences to share. The first one, um, I want to say this really carefully because you all know that I love chiropractic care. Love it. My experience, I've been going to chiropractors for 30 plus years. So what I've learned in that time is if you go to a new chiropractor and he seems it seems very rough, you need to move on. That's what I've learned, and that's what that's what I do now. Um so I um had been at this chiropractic practice, but this sp this particular day I saw the brother, there was two brothers that owned it, and I saw the brother of the practice, and he was very rough. And I don't know how else to say that other than just like really, you know, like just what I'm aggressive, aggressive, perfect. What helps me is gentle, like you can, you know, like you chiropractic doesn't have to be like crank your neck off. Um and and so anyway, I had I got sciatica for the first time ever right there in the office. And I told the the uh his I don't know what her title is, the assistant or whatever, and she said, Oh, I'll go tell him. And and she came back and said, Oh, he said it it'll go away soon. Okay. Um, I went home, it was excruciating, and I called the office again at 7 a.m. the next morning. I was like, hey, there's no uh I am not doing this. This is I have never had this before, and you did this and you need to fix it. It's so I said, I don't care what you have to do, I'm coming in there this morning, and so um I went. Did you use any remedies yet? Not yet. I think this was before I was I was more classical back then. Okay, so this was before I was using acute remedies, right? So I go in and um he looked really pretty concerned because of the amount of pain that I was in. Um honestly, I don't remember what ended up, how I ended up getting better if it was just chiropractic care because I was classical back then. But after that, um the next time I had sciatica pain with the same leg was from when I worked at the hospital, and I used to put my phone in my back pocket. And so I walked around with my phone in my back pocket every day, all day, and it was on the right side, and I started getting sciatica on that right side, and it was excruciating, it was terrible. Um, and I did use remedies. So my remedy that works for sciatica is uh symphytum, hypericum, and roostal that helps me every time. And um I was using remedies and they were helping, but I kept getting the pain, and then after um quite a few days, I realized I wonder if it's this phone in my back pocket, and I stopped carrying the phone in my pocket and it and the sciatica stopped. And um pretty wild. That was when I stopped putting my phone on my body. I realized the actual impact. Do you know since then? Um, I think it was last year or the year before, I tried an Apple Watch and I got sharp shooting pains of my arm from the Apple Watch too. So I'm sensitive to energies and you know stuff like that, Wi-Fi, set whatever the what is EMFs. Um, but I do I do always tell people don't keep your phone on your body. And um, so the rem now I very rarely will get a little sharpshooting pain down that leg, but it's very easily and quickly taken care of with the symphytum hypericum and roostocks. I do like all the three of those in a 200, and I have a combination um medicating potency, and I I make the bottle and I write backache 200 on it, and that's good for all the backaches, the neck aches, and the sciaticas in our house. So um let me give you some other top um remedies. So Brie already mentioned Magfoss, and um magfoss has that cramping, shooting leg pain. It's great for the shooting, electric pains, worse for cold, better for warmth, better for pressure, muscle tension, cramping sensations. If heat and pressure help your sciatica, start with magfoss. Roost tox, which is one that I used, is better for moving, worse for resting. This is the classic remedy for the back and nerve pain. So it's great for the stiffness, worse on for standing, better after walking or warming up, worse for cold, damp weather, and restlessness is present. And um, this is a great remedy for the chronic sciatic. Bryonia is also one that Brie mentioned. Worse with any movement, completely opposite of roostalks. So think severe pain with even small movements. The person wants to be perfectly still, they might have sharp stabbing pains, better for pressure, better for lying on the painful side. And if motion makes the pain unbearable, choose bryonia. Number four is colosynthes. This is relief from pressure and bending forward. This is huge for sciatica with the nerve involvement. So think shooting pains down the leg, worse for sitting, better for bending forward, better for firm pressure, better for heat, irritability from pain. Many people say this remedy gives instant relief.

How if I no, I've honestly never thought of colosynthis for I you know, I bet Kyle had I had the combo that I used for him for his back, and that's just what I used. Um, but that is amazing. And you know what? I've this isn't, I'm kind of getting on a rabbit trail here. I was sick last week, and I it's bothering me a little bit again. It's not bad. It's just like my lower back is a little achy. I've only had a couple times of a little bit of pain. And I wonder though, I might try it this time when it's really minor, but inflammation in that area where it's not fully healed yet. Maybe that has something to do with it.

So what I would do, Brie, though, is use what worked last time.

And then if that's not helpful enough, or if it's not helpful, then I probably should do that, just like I literally just said to do. But I'm probably gonna try calling this.

Yeah. Um, number five that we both mentioned was hypericum. This is the nerve pain remedy. So perfect for nerve-rich areas with the electric shooting pains, injury-related sciatica, pain traveling multiple directions, tingling, numbness, or if the person falls on their tailbone, um, hypericum is a number one. So if it feels like the nerve is on fire, hypericum helps. Number six is one that we both also used, or you you had mentioned it. Arnica, trauma-induced sciatica. So if the pain began after lifting, injury, overuse, falling down, or childbirth, arnica reduces inflammation and speeds the healing. Number seven, callicarb is the knife-like back pain. This one is so specific. This pain radiates from the back to the butt. Worse from 2 to 4 a.m., worse for standing, weakness in the knees, and stitching pains. This is great for older adults with chronic back issues. And then number eight is ruta, R-U-T-A. This is for the back and tendon tendons and ligaments, best when connective tissue is involved. So think strained ligaments, pain at the sacrum, worse for sitting, better for lying down, and also great for tailbone injuries. Ruta is great after whiplash or lifting injuries. Now remember to pause the podcast, go back and get those keynotes into your notes, and write down this quick matching guide. Shooting plus cramping equals magfoss. Better for moving equals roost. Worse for moving equals bryonia. Better for bending forward equals colosynthesis, electric nerve pain equals hypericum. After injuries equals Arnica, pain 2 to 4 a.m. equals calicarb and ligament strain equals ruta. So Bree, why don't you give us some supportive strategies for sciatica?

Matching Remedies To Pain Patterns

Okay. I have a, I mean, I could probably talk a lot about this, but some easy, attainable ones that you can do at home are heat, heat relaxes the muscles and increases circulation. Obviously, in some cases, heat can worsen your pain if it creates more inflammation, then maybe you ice instead. So depending on your issue, I preferred heat for some of the time, but sometimes it did aggravate that. Um so stretching, piriformist stretches, hamstring stretches, hip flexor stretching, these honestly all like I remember how good they felt. So look those up. There are a ton of them you can do that are very effective. Core strengthening, stabilizing exercises for your core that helps support your lower back and all of your muscle symptoms or systems. So work on that. Start gently. If it hurts, wait until your pain is a little bit better before you're really going hardcore to do that. Um, if movement brings relief, try walking, loosening up those muscles, getting things moving, especially if that comes from sitting down so much. You might need to move more. Um, like I just was saying, avoid prolonged sitting. You really need to be taking breaks, getting up and moving every 20 or 30 minutes. Epsom salt baths can be great. Relax to relax the muscles, reduce inflammation. And so if heat bothers it, just take one that's not quite so hot, leave it a little warm, and then maybe ice after. Magnesium supplements, magnesium glycinate specifically, or malate, those are, I did not know enough about magnesium last year. I didn't mean it was in there, but the type of magnesium that probably would have helped a lot. Chiropractic care, like we had mentioned, because that pelvic alignment can really, really matter. And um, I also recommend body work like craniofascial therapy really was good for my nervous system. After having that much pain and tension overall, that in one session, my pain was 75% better. I still had the numbling, numbing and numbness and tingling, but my pain level was almost like miraculously better. Um, and then you can do an anti-inflammatory diet or supplements. You know, we're not huge supplement people, but in that period of time, you might want to hit that hard. So omega-3s, turmeric, ginger, leafy greens. I took um what's it called? It's frankincense. Oh, okay. I did take yes, curumin. I did take that, and then I took um starts with a B, it's frankincense. So things like that, anti-inflammatory things. Yeah, Boswellia. Thank you. Yep.
