Anime NYC is supposed to be a fun day out, right, until you realize it’s also a full-on cultural mirror. We’re back with a chaotic recap that hits everything: last-minute cosplay planning, the best food finds, DJs on different floors, and the one piece of convention etiquette we wish everybody took seriously. We also talk about why it feels so good to see Black cosplayers show out, take characters we love, and make the look completely our own.

Anime NYC Recap And Cosplay
SPEAKER_00Oh, uh, George Who's outside? Uh, what was it this past weekend? At the NYC anime. What that? What that like?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I was. It was pretty lit. Like it was, I've been to those like Comic-Con kind of deals before. It was pretty dope. Um, kind of catching a lot of black people out in a while getting their nerd on, and I was for it. I gathered a couple of my cousins, and we rolled out with my sister, and we had a good ass day. Shit was long. Lots of good cosplays out there. The entertainment was interesting. Um, they had a couple of DJs on certain levels. First off, shout out to the Jacob Javitt Center out in the city that uh that hosted the event all weekend. It was a four-day event, Thursday to Sunday. Me and the gang had tickets for Friday. Um, and we had a blast. Lots of shit to buy, lots of food. Shout out to the food, because the food was busting. Um, I've always liked me some Asian snacks and and Chinese foods and such. So we had a good time. But it was a long ass day. From getting up at the ass crack at dawn to leaving at the when it ended, literally when it fucking ended, um getting the stuff together for everybody to to cosplay accordingly. Like it was we and we crunched it last minute. The tickets were for Friday. I bought them Wednesday morning. It was at the store all day for all day Thursday. Uh at the mall all day Thursday at that. Shout out to the American Dream Mall in Jersey. It's fucking huge. That needs its own like panel of of things to do up in there because it was wild. Because we was on a mission, I didn't get to explore. But if you're in Jersey, that's gonna be a whole day of your life. It can be a couple days of your life, honestly. I'm surprised I ain't hooked that shit up with hotels too.
SPEAKER_00Alright, so what was the what was what were you dressed as? What was we outside as?
SPEAKER_03Oh, I was dressed up as um the character from Naruto. What's Shikamaro's wife's name? Um, Tamari. With the four ponytails and the big ass fan. It was easy enough. I pulled it together last minute enough for it to work. So I appreciate it. People recognize who I was. A couple people wanted pictures of shit. I was like, okay, sure.
SPEAKER_00Um, what was the most interesting thing you saw?
SPEAKER_03Um, it's always interesting to me how many black people participate in that kind of shit. Like, I love like when black cosplayers get out there and do it. Um, like one of the things black cosplay is to me is taking a character that you fuck with, that you resonate with, and making them as blacky black as possible. And I feel like that's what I accomplished with with my look.
SPEAKER_00Now, the DJs, you said there's a DJs on different level. What they playing?
SPEAKER_03Um, like line music, a little wobble here, a little little, you know, little something to get the folks moving.
SPEAKER_04What what you considering over there? Was I considerate? No, no, no, no, no. He's asking like he was about to go.
SPEAKER_00No, I was just trying to get information because I'm trying to figure out if they're playing the anime soundtracks or if you're a good DJ, you can mix it up.
SPEAKER_03And I'm saying like the theme songs. If you're a good DJ, you can mix it with some club shit and pop off. You know, I've seen that shit online. I love following new DJs online on TikTok. Y'all, y'all got me set. I'm quick to drop my little dancing emoji sticker in the comments. Like, I love that shit. I love a good DJ, a well-organized DJ. A a a D dude not only pays attention to the set list, but the vibes. Like, you know, I'm for it.
SPEAKER_00That's why I was asking to see if he was paying attention to the vibes. Like, is he are they?
SPEAKER_03Everybody was there, was lit, but but again, because it's mixed company, sometimes I know what to expect. Certain areas of the the venue I knew to stay away from because I could hear that I couldn't recognize the music, but I could also, you know, I I I could hear that I couldn't recognize the music, so I could tell what was going on down there was different what I heard from what I heard upstairs, but black girls was doing a wall. You feel me? See, that's what I was trying to say. It was diverse enough, but because I knew what I didn't want to run into, I avoided it. Like the last convention I went to, and this was in Louisville, so you can imagine what the populace was was looking like, but you know, that area where they played the music I didn't recognize started to smell real funky real quick. And I was like, we can we're gonna avoid that. We're gonna avoid that.
DJ Sets And Convention Etiquette
SPEAKER_03Like, number one large gathering rule is please wear deodorant. Stop playing. Yeah, because I'm I I I was quick. I made sure look, I made sure there was extra six deodorant in the bag for the boys because they're boys. Sometimes they just fucking stink, and I'm just like, you know what? Or I can do that in public today. There's already gonna be other niggas, bunch of bunch of niggas and non-niggas contributing to the factor. It won't be any of the niggas I brought with me.
SPEAKER_00All right, uh, Clay, well, you you asking me of what I partake. Are you would you protect? You watch anime now.
SPEAKER_04Okay, uh, I'll I'll okay, watch anime, and I will watch anime. Just like you will watch a movie, I will watch some anime.

SPEAKER_04It's the same vibe. It's it's but but I don't I personally would not partake. I don't really do the uh how can I put this gently? I don't really do the nerd shit. Like to each they own, like you know, do what you do. Me personally, nah, like, especially not in no big crowd, like it's it's it's nerd shit everywhere.
SPEAKER_03Let me let me not let me not just look like you fuck with the superhero shit too, right? It's just that's a good one on earth it. How can you believe how many Spider-Man I saw there? They was lit, they was there for it.
SPEAKER_04You won't catch me at Comic Con, though. I quit GameStop after a day. You definitely won't catch me in no get no Comic Con.

It's a like a breastplate with these like white pieces on it, and like pieces of a skirt as a skirt. Like, you know, in in when you can translate something from a cartoon to real fashion, like something you can wear like outside for real. Like that shit was intriguing. So I click on her profile to see what the end result was, and she was like, Well, I'll present the end results after I do a con this weekend. I said, This weekend, tap, tap, tap later. Anime, NYC. Four-day tickets, sold out now. Check individual dates. And $200 later, me and my sister had had something to do on a Friday.
SPEAKER_00All I'm saying is Rapunzel and characters from the Goofy movie is pushing it at the anime NYC. They was outside. I'm just saying. But I will go to participate. I ain't even gonna hold you. I will go to just participate.
SPEAKER_03Exactly. At least soak in, you know, the atmosphere from people as mixed vibes. I did a vibe check with a lot of people just to see what was going on, to see how people was feeling, and it was fantastic. And I was like, I ain't never been to a baby shower where they slant us with hamburger. It's always been ham or turkey. But she already pulled up with the hamburgers, and I was like, Man, where'd they do that at? For sure. Yeah, but hammer, but yeah, it was uh hammer turkey sliders.
