What does it truly mean to succeed as a Christian in the marketplace? Tyler McHart dives deep into this question, drawing from his 12-year journey as an entrepreneur and his transformative encounter with "The Go-Giver" philosophy.

The pivotal moment came when Tyler was about 30 years old, working in corporate sales and desperately seeking a different approach to business. A simple yet profound quote from minister Mike Murdoch changed everything: "What you make happen for another, God will make happen for you." This single idea perfectly aligned with what Tyler discovered in the book "The Go-Giver" - that by focusing on creating value for others rather than yourself, success naturally follows.

Tyler makes a compelling case that everyone engages in selling, regardless of their formal role. Whether you're a parent encouraging your child to eat vegetables or a minister sharing the gospel, you're selling ideas and choices. He shares the fascinating etymology of the word "sell," which comes from the Old English "sellan" meaning "to give" - a revelation that transforms how we understand sales entirely. The true definition of selling, Tyler explains, is "learning what people do want to do and helping them do that."

Speaker 2:

Anyway, I remember when I picked this book up I believe the book actually when I found it, it was actually handed to me by a gentleman that was at a business meeting and he said, man, look, just got done reading this book. And this book has radically changed who I am and what I am, and I would highly recommend this to you, tyler. Well, if you know anything about me, I am a stickler for books, I am a lifelong learner, I really enjoy learning, and that is something that I've always done and always, will still always do. And so when he handed me this book, it was a red book and it was a book, a storybook actually, and the book was kind of called the Go-Giver, not to be confused with another book called the Go-Getter, which is also a storybook. But the Go-Getter has a whole different mindset, has a whole different way of thinking, which I still think is a great book and a great mindset to have.

Speaker 2:

But the Go-Giver really shifted my thinking and it really actually what it did for me at that time in my life, because at that time I think I was right around 30, 31 years old. At that time I think I was right around 30, 31 years old and it was at a time where I was really piecing together how to actually put into practice or what does it look like to do the kingdom of God actually in the marketplace. Let me make sure you hear that At that time in my life I was in the marketplace. Let me make sure you hear that At that time in my life I was in corporate sales. I was working for a big Fortune 500 company at the time and I wanted a way out of the traditional way of doing things in the marketplace. I wasn't interested in that anymore and I wanted to know what the Word of God and I had dug deep into the Word of God, finding different ways of doing things.

Speaker 2:

And I remember this quote that was given to me by a minister. His name is Mike Murdoch and the quote went like this, he said, and it was almost like he was talking to Tyler right. The quote basically said what you make happen for another, god will make happen for you. What you make happen for another, god will make happen for you. What you make happen for another, god will make happen for you. And I remember that quote whenever I heard him say that and actually read it in one of his books.

Speaker 2:

But, man, that really profoundly impacted me and led me to this book called the Go-Giver, because when I read the Go-Giver it opened up my eyes to seeing holy cow. This is literally without using anything of the Bible, like a scripture verse or a passage from the Bible. None of that was used inside this book and it was a complete story of how that when you take your eyes off yourself and you make it about the other person, your whole world changes. Your whole world goes to a shift to actually to actually giving and receiving Instead of being more transactional, which that's what I was doing. I was more transactional of like, okay, hey, if I help this person out, I'm going to get something out of this, and it wasn't exactly horrible, but it still wasn't the best To where that I was could kind of elevate my brain to the kingdom way to actually when Jesus would talk about. You know, the kingdom of God is among you, or is. I'm come to bring the kingdom to you. The kingdom is based upon sowing and reaping, upon giving and receiving, and this little red book, the Go-Giver, was the story that kind of opened my eyes up that this actually could literally happen. So now flash forward here. I am 47 years young, by the way, and I'm now moving into a new venture of you know, with you know, helping people, working with people, educating people in what I do.

Speaker 2:

And I had listened to this book many, many years ago and it was the follow-up book. It was the follow-up book called Go Givers, sell More. So in essence, what it was for me at that time it was kind of the blocking and tackling. It was the okay.

Speaker 2:

That was a great story about this guy who was in corporate sales, who was really struggling to meet his numbers, and basically he went on this journey to learn how to actually that really, if you choose to give, all you need to do is be open to receive and guess what? Things will always work out for you. But things will always work out for you Now, in the Bible way of looking at. That is when you actually go and you give, you do what the Lord says to say to do, to give unto someone else, go and make something else happen for another. Guess what God will make it happen for you, or make something happen for you. That's basically quintessentially it. But again, actually having the blocking attacker. What does that really mean in actually the day-to-day workplace?

Speaker 2:

Well, this book called Go Givers, sell More really did open my eyes up and I decided about a week and a half ago, at the time of this recording, to go back and re-listen to that audio book. And as I started re-listening to it, I actually went back and said you know, I don't actually own the physical copy of this book, so I'm actually going to go in and buy the physical copy. So I did, I did and I just want to read off a couple of the things, a couple of things that, as I've been reading through this book, why this is so important. Now let me say this before I go any further A lot of you guys that are listening to my podcast you might sit there and say, hey, you know, because I know, I know I've got a couple of you guys, a couple of ladies that say I'm just a mom.

Speaker 2:

All right, I'm not in sales. I don't believe in sales, I don't want to even think about sales and I get that. So let me, let me talk just about you know, 60 seconds to this part of my audience.

Speaker 2:

If I could Please hear me? Please hear me. You might not have a sales title, but you're in sales. That young child of yours that doesn't want to eat their green beans or that doesn't want to, you know, go and clean up their room. You have to actually put yourself in their shoes. Help them see the reason why it is beneficial for them to actually go and clean their room, all right, so you are, in essence, selling to them. You're giving to them which, by the way. So that's my little take. So even the mom, the stay-at-home mom, is in sales. Isn't that just wild to think about?

Speaker 2:

As a parent, I am constantly selling my children on why it is so good to be in love with the Lord and to follow hard after Him Every day. I'm doing that, whether it's my actions or whether it's my attitude towards them, but I am always selling. I'm selling the gospel. I'm selling how good it is to actually be on this adventure with the Holy Spirit. Even though it is adventurous and even though sometimes there are some low times with that adventure, guess what? It always works out at the end and the adventure is so worth it being on this adventure with the Holy Spirit. I'm selling that and I hope that you see that, guess what? Don't ever sit there and shortcut yourself and say, no, I don't like being in sales because, guess what, you're in sales.

Speaker 2:

Now here's one of the interesting things about. I just want to go over this real quick with you. Two quick things, okay. One is the word sales actually comes from the old English word saline. Right, saline, I think I'm saying that, right, let me there. It is Selan, selan, selan, all right, s-e-l-l-a-n. And guess what the meaning is? It means to give. How about that? To give, that is literally what the word selling in the old English word. It means to give. And with that said so, it helps you kind of change your mindset, help change how you think about selling in a good way.

Speaker 2:

One of the other things that I want to make sure that comes across with this episode here is selling is not about you. Okay, selling is not about you. What we have to understand is selling is all about the other person. All right, let me just read this quick, easy definition of selling. Please hear this. It's about learning what people do want to do and helping them do that. Let me make sure you understand that, because a lot of times we get this backwards. All right, let me make sure you understand that, cause a lot of times we get this backwards. That you know we're, we're, we're trying to push what we we, we think is the best thing for someone and what they need to do. That's, that's that's the we start with us versus we start with the other person on the other end and begin with them. We learn about what people do want to do and help them do that.

Speaker 2:

It's about giving people more advantages, guys, it really is, and I wanted just to promote this book, If you want to call it that, Go, Give or Sell More to you just in this short episode right here. I think it'd be a fantastic read for you. I think it'd really help you because it really is a. If you can study this, if you actually really take it to heart, which.

Speaker 2:

I've already read, the Go-Giver multiple times, that book. I've also read now this book here once or listened to it on audio once many years ago. I've now come back to it. I've already listened to it again. Now I'm even going to take a deeper dive and actually start taking the actual this book, the Go-Giver, Sell More and really kind of honing in and utilizing this Because, again, this is kingdom, it really is. This is the closest thing I've found in all the books I've read, which I've read a lot of of is a great way to show how, demonstrate how the kingdom of God operates in sales, and maybe one day I might write a book about this kind of putting it a little bit in a different spin, in my own spin maybe, but right now this is where it's at okay.

Speaker 2:
