And they said, Well, have"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":147.69,"endTime":149.22,"body":"you thought about the school of"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":149.22,"endTime":151.86,"body":"journalism and mass"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":149.22,"endTime":151.86,"body":"communications? KU has one of"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":151.86,"endTime":154.47,"body":"the top schools in the country."},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":151.86,"endTime":154.47,"body":"You're going to do all those"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":154.47,"endTime":160.41,"body":"things. And so I got in, and I"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":154.47,"endTime":160.41,"body":"really enjoyed more on the"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":160.41,"endTime":163.86,"body":"marketing communications side"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":160.41,"endTime":163.86,"body":"than on the kind of news and"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":163.86,"endTime":167.04,"body":"editorial and reporting side,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":163.86,"endTime":167.04,"body":"right? That was of interest to"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":167.04,"endTime":172.56,"body":"me, but not as much. And so I"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":167.04,"endTime":172.56,"body":"had a professor, Dr Tim"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":172.56,"endTime":175.74,"body":"Bankston, who, unfortunately,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":172.56,"endTime":175.74,"body":"just passed away this past"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":175.74,"endTime":179.43,"body":"spring, but he was so"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":175.74,"endTime":179.43,"body":"influential in my life, and he"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":179.43,"endTime":182.1,"body":"took me aside and said, Hey, are"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":179.43,"endTime":182.1,"body":"you sure you want to be a"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":182.1,"endTime":185.1,"body":"lawyer? I think you've got a lot"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":182.1,"endTime":185.1,"body":"of talent in marketing"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":185.1,"endTime":188.22,"body":"communications. And I said, Oh,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":185.1,"endTime":188.22,"body":"no, no, I'm going to be a"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":188.22,"endTime":193.44,"body":"lawyer. So but thank you. I"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":188.22,"endTime":193.44,"body":"appreciate it. I was getting"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":193.44,"endTime":196.26,"body":"good grades. I was, you know,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":193.44,"endTime":196.26,"body":"enjoying what I was doing. And"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":196.26,"endTime":199.98,"body":"so then I started asking around."},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":196.26,"endTime":199.98,"body":"I had some fraternity brothers"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":199.98,"endTime":203.22,"body":"that were in law school. I had"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":199.98,"endTime":203.22,"body":"contacts with people who were"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":203.22,"endTime":206.64,"body":"recently out, and I had people"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":203.22,"endTime":206.64,"body":"that I reached out to who had"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":206.64,"endTime":210.87,"body":"their name on the letterhead."},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":206.64,"endTime":210.87,"body":"Wow. Nobody was having any fun."},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":211.56,"endTime":216.27,"body":"Nobody was encouraging me. And"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":211.56,"endTime":216.27,"body":"I'm like, Well, I go back and"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":216.27,"endTime":219.24,"body":"set up another meeting with Dr"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":216.27,"endTime":219.24,"body":"Bankston. And I said, Well, tell"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":219.24,"endTime":222.93,"body":"me more about this grad school."},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":219.24,"endTime":222.93,"body":"And he said, you know,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":223.47,"endTime":226.83,"body":"Northwestern has one of the top"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":223.47,"endTime":226.83,"body":"programs in the country. I think"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":226.83,"endTime":231.21,"body":"you should apply there. And so I"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":226.83,"endTime":231.21,"body":"did. I applied there University"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":231.21,"endTime":235.02,"body":"of Texas and Illinois, both at"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":231.21,"endTime":235.02,"body":"outstanding programs as well,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":235.56,"endTime":239.01,"body":"but Northwestern was a cut"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":235.56,"endTime":239.01,"body":"above. And I went there and I"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":239.01,"endTime":244.86,"body":"was able to learn at the feet of"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":239.01,"endTime":244.86,"body":"the master, another professor,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":244.89,"endTime":249.9,"body":"Dr Don Schultz, who came up with"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":244.89,"endTime":249.9,"body":"the concept of integrated"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":249.9,"endTime":254.55,"body":"marketing communication, or what"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":249.9,"endTime":254.55,"body":"is formerly now known as IMC,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":254.58,"endTime":259.02,"body":"with curriculum. So I"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":268.11,"endTime":271.62,"body":"worked at Pizza Hut when it was"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":271.62,"endTime":275.19,"body":"owned by PepsiCo, with another"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":271.62,"endTime":275.19,"body":"wonderful mentor we'll talk"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":275.19,"endTime":280.26,"body":"about. So it has been 36 seven"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":294.18,"endTime":300.84,"body":"year. Kind of rye. COVID that"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":300.84,"endTime":305.67,"body":"now has culminated in me writing"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":300.84,"endTime":305.67,"body":"this book, which we'll talk"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":305.67,"endTime":309.36,"body":"about and called the purposeful"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":305.67,"endTime":309.36,"body":"growth revolution for ways to"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":309.36,"endTime":314.13,"body":"grow from leader to legacy"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":309.36,"endTime":314.13,"body":"builder. So when I"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":345.66,"endTime":349.44,"body":"go to Starbucks and through the"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":345.66,"endTime":349.44,"body":"drive through, I'll pay for the"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":349.44,"endTime":353.1,"body":"car behind me. I physically"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":349.44,"endTime":353.1,"body":"can't pay for the car in front"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":353.1,"endTime":356.94,"body":"of me because it's already gone,"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":353.1,"endTime":356.94,"body":"so I'm paying it backward to the"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":356.94,"endTime":360.66,"body":"car behind me. And when I get to"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":356.94,"endTime":360.66,"body":"the window, I'll just tell the"},{"speaker":"Mark Mears","startTime":360.66,"endTime":363.93,"body":"barista.
