#15: Mind and Strength Psychology with Dan Hobin
This episode connects us with Dan Hobin. Dan is a Registered Psychologist, Powerlifting & Fitness Coach who has experience in the treatment of mental health and behavioural disorders in youth, adolescents and adults. He has worked in a variety of different clinical settings including non-for-profit organisations (Headspace, New Horizons), community mental health (Royal North Shore Hospital), the medical and pharmaceutical industries, volunteer work (Lifeline) and private practice.
Dan started his career in the exercise and sports science space where he worked in a gym (Energize Fitness) as a personal trainer, group exercise instructor and on the gym floor while chasing a basketball career. He also worked in the corporate fitness sector (Healthworks), coached individuals in powerlifting and in basketball for Manly Warringah Basketball Association.
Dan works with those of all ages, however, has found himself working in the youth, adolescents and young adults space more often. He has experience in treating a range of mental health difficulties including anxiety, stress, worry, drug and alcohol problems, trauma, depression, relationship problems, assimilation, grief and loss, self-esteem, anger, sleep hygiene and personal growth. He uses a range of evidence-based modalities to meet the needs of each individual including supportive psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), schema therapy, mindfulness and meditative techniques.
Dan seeks to create warm, nurturing and compassionate relationships with all his clients. His approach to therapy is client-centred and collaborative where the client’s interests drive the interventions used within the treatment. Dan works with people to best understand what’s important to them and helps them develop insight, skills and behaviours to respond and adjust to whatever life throws at them.
More recently, Dan created his own business, Mind & Strength Psychology (MASP) which uses evidence-based practices to combine psychological therapy with exercise. MASP specifically utilises strength training, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and cardiovascular conditioning with mobility to improve overall wellness (mental, physical, emotional & spiritual) and create positive change.
