Hello and welcome to CGM Presents: In the Word. This is Episode 14, Spiritual Warfare Scriptures, Season 14.
Our spiritual warfare scripture for this episode is Ephesians 6:14b. Put on the breastplate of righteousness.
I attended an event with a group of ladies, and one of the women made the statement. “It is better to be righteous than it is to be right.” I do not recall to whom the statement was originally attributed and could not find the author after researching the quote.
Nevertheless, it is a powerful statement which caused me to think about what righteousness means in the biblical sense. Why is it better to be righteous rather than to be right? Because God is righteous, Jesus exemplified righteousness when He was on earth, and the Holy Spirit gives us the power to live righteously.
My simple definition of God’s righteousness is that He always does what is right. He does what is right, holy, faithful, and true. Here are just a few of the over 500 scriptures derived from the root word “righteous” or “righteousness” in the Bible.
Psalm 11:7 — “For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds.”
Psalm 97:2 — “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.”
Psalm 119:137 — “Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your rules.”
Psalm 145:17 — “The Lord is righteous in all his ways.”
Deuteronomy 32:4 — “A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is
he.”
Daniel 9:14 — “The Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done.”
Romans 1:17 — “For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.”
Romans 3:21–22 — “The righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the
law… through faith in Jesus Christ.”
God is righteous, and because he is righteous, he expects us to be righteous, and when we are righteous, we are able to wage spiritual warfare more effectively. Let’s consider the breastplate of God’s righteousness.
The breastplate in the military sense was a metal vest that guarded the vital organs, in particular the heart. In comparison, the breastplate of righteousness is the spiritual armor that protects the heart and vital organs from spiritual attacks designed against you. It is your Holy Ghost armor.
The Holy Spirit uses the breastplate of God’s righteousness to cover your heart from attacks that prevent you from waging spiritual warfare. Whatever you are going through right now, you can focus on the spiritual fight instead of being concerned about other influences because God has your heart covered. Proverbs 4:23 tells us, "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
Desiring righteousness will make you want to serve God and be pleasing to Him; being righteous will help you to walk more closely with God. It will make you want to be more like God. We have a tendency as human beings to want to be right. Nobody really wants to be wrong, and it’s very difficult for us to admit when we are wrong.
Basically, we would prefer to always be right or right most of the time; consequently, because we have difficulty admitting when we are wrong, it could cause us to be puffed up and not be humble. Humility, as we have already discussed in a previous podcast, is important. So, righteousness keeps us humble as well because righteousness takes precedence over being right. So, the next time you want to be right about something, ask yourself the question, is it righteous? If the answer is “no” tighten up your righteousness breastplate and move forward into the next spiritual warfare battle.
