Carolyn Schönafinger

Welcome, Celine.

Celine Deplazes

Thank you very much. Thanks for having me. Good morning from Lucerne.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, tell us a bit about yourself and exactly whereabouts in Lucerne you're standing.

Celine Deplazes

Yeah, so as Carolyn mentioned, I'm Celine. I work for the Tourism board of Lucerne. So I'm right now standing in the city. But as the tourism board of Lucerne, we are not just representing the beautiful city of Lucerne, it's really the whole surrounding the surrounding areas around Lake Lucerne. So you've seen or you've done a podcast like this with Mount PIlatus already. So we work very closely with Manuela as well and lots of other partners like hotels, restaurants, lake cruises. So if you have any questions, you can reach out. Of course, Carolyn, she's an expert, or myself. I'm based in Lucerne and right now I'm actually standing on the oldest bridge of Lucerne, it's called the Reussbrucke. And behind me you can see the Water Tower and Chapel Bridge. So this is our, I would say most famous site in Lucerne and I've heard that it is the second most famous or people take pictures, the most with the Matterhorn, second most with the water tower. I don't know if it's true, but I could imagine because it's really, really beautiful and very unique. And just behind this mountain here is Mount Rigi. So very close mountain excursion that you can do from the city of Lucerne.

Celine Deplazes

And then on this side here is restaurants and hotels. So Lucerne is a really small boutique town. The train station from where I'm standing is about a five minute walk. So it's really super easy. On one side of the bridge you have a bit the newer part of the city and then on this side where we're going to walk in just a minute is the old town. Very mediaeval cobblestone, beautiful buildings. So there's a lot of history in Lucerne but still a lot of other things to do like nature, lake cruises, mountain excursions.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, wonderful. Now it absolutely is a beautiful city to visit. Now I noticed there when you turned your camera around to your left, there's a church there. Can you tell everyone about that church please?

Celine Deplazes

So that's the Jesuit Church. Exactly. It's a very mediaeval baroque church. The first one actually in Switzerland and it's open for public. So when you're in Lucerne you can just walk in and then you can have a look at the inside. And actually quite special also is that during winter, so In January, during 11 days, we have our light festival. So the church turns into a beautiful or is illuminated in a beautiful light installation and the inside of the church turns into a show. It's a 25 minute show with live music or organ music. So yeah, you see it's new and old next to each other. So here, this one, this building here is the theatre. So lots of culture as well. Okay, and then let me see, I think we cannot see the building but sort of in this direction also next to the train station would be the concert and convention centre. So this is more of a concert hall and lots of classical concerts as well. So a lot of music in Lucerne.

Carolyn Schönafinger

And you mentioned that Lucerne is a very compact city and the train station is just there over behind your shoulder, just back past the the Water Tower there, that's also where the lake cruises depart from, isn't it?

Celine Deplazes

Exactly, yeah. So it's the train station, it's the bus terminal, it's the boat cruises. And you have various options for both cruises in Lucerne. So there's round trips or I think the best way is actually to combine with a mountain expl excursion such as Mount Rigi. Within 40 minutes you reach the valley station and this is 365 days a year. So the cruises are also running during winter time because the lake is not frozen. It's too big, too deep. Yeah. So definitely, definitely recommend to do a lake cruise when you're in Lucerne.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, fantastic. All right, well, perhaps we can go for a bit of a stroll. You mentioned some of the hotels and restaurants there along the river. Do you have a favourite or is there one that serves sort of specialties that people might like to try?

Celine Deplazes

So I would say it's either the Rathaus Brauerei, because they brew their own beer. Actually there is one restaurant that has a direct pipe from the brewery into their restaurant. Right, yeah. And that's the Stadtkeller. And the other one I would probably say is Pfistern, because there you can really eat the local food. The Lucerne puff pastry. It's a dish that you don't get anywhere else in Switzerland. It's not like Fondue or Rösti. You can get it everywhere. The Lucerne puff pastry, just in Lucerne, it's a bit like a pie, I would say.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, yeah.

Celine Deplazes

So I'm now in the Old Town and you see there's lots of doors shut and I'm walking towards one of the hotels. It's the Des Balances Hotel. It's a beautiful four star property and just by the river, so they have beautiful rooms with a view over the Jesuit Church, the Water Tower, Chapel, Bridge. And also in the background is Mount Pilatus. So let's see.

Carolyn Schönafinger

And they have rooms with balconies too.

Celine Deplazes

Yes, yes. Here we are. I'm going to turn around so you can see it actually here, this building, it used to be the old town hall. So on this side we see a little balcony like here. And this is where back in the days people like, they made the announcement when someone didn't behave correctly and then they had to stand by this tree and everybody who was walking by, they could, I don't know, punch them or just say some ugly words. So that's a bit. Yeah. Now it's a hotel. It used to be the old town hall and this tree has a very special meaning.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah. So today it's okay to stand under the tree, but back in the day, you wouldn't have wanted to.

Celine Deplazes

No. It meant that you were punished.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yes. Okay. So quite a few of the buildings there have the lovely frescoes on them, and some even have the oriel windows. What's the history behind them?

Celine Deplazes

So a lot of people that had something to say in Lucerne, they lived in these buildings. And there's different meanings to the the paintings. Some of the paintings, they show the status of the family that lived in the house. Some are paintings of, like, the family names. So each family in Switzerland and in Lucerne, they have, like, their own painting. So some walls, they have different family names. And then I'm gonna try to show you this one picture here. This one. This is. So right now I'm standing on the Weinmarkt. This used to be an old trading square because Lucerne was very important for the north, south trading. And this one was one of the first squares. And also in the past, here were the the Easter games. So this painting shows part of the Easter game. And then I'm not sure if I can show it on the video, but that's actually my favourite here.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Little window.

Celine Deplazes

Yeah. This building used to be an old pharmacy. And people in the past, they didn't know a lot about medicine and herbs. So when they were in love and then they broke up and they were heartbroken, they were looking for a medicine. And above the window, it says something like in the Latin language, it says, sorry, we don't have any medicine against love. Yeah, it's my favourite one.

Carolyn Schönafinger

So don't come here to mend your broken heart!

Celine Deplazes

So there's lots of different wall paintings. So it's actually one of the guided tours that you can do in Lucerne is all about the paintings. So they will explain all the different meanings of these paintings.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, and how frequent are those guided tours?

Celine Deplazes

So the regular guided tour, just like what we're doing now, is every, twice a week, but you can always book a private tour. And then these themed tours, they are a bit more irregular, but always you can book it as a private tour as well.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay.

Celine Deplazes

So the themed tours are on specific dates.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, now, you mentioned there that where you are now, that's called the old town. So what sort of what century are we talking when we're talking about the old town?

Celine Deplazes

So Lucerne used to be a lot of water. Like, it looked a bit like Venice. So lots of small little canals and rivers. But around 1130, they built or they started to build hotels and old or houses. So this is sort of when the old town started to, or they started to construct the old town. But when you walk around the, the river or the lake, I have to say all the five star hotels are located there. So in the city centre we have about, we have three five star hotels. And where they are located in the past there was just water, but they built this because of tourism and similar for the old town. And also when you walk through the town, watch the floor or the ground and you can see different colours of cobblestones. And this means that there used to be an arch or a door. It's quite interesting actually.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, yeah, that's fascinating. So we've seen the Chapel Bridge and the Water Tower and the Jesuit Church and some of those beautiful buildings along the river. What, what are some of the other sites that people can see in Lucerne that we're not going to see on our walking tour?

Celine Deplazes

So one is probably also one of the famous ones is the Lion Monument. And actually right here is a signage that points out the different sites and touristic attractions. So one is the Lion Monument, then another one is the Glacier Garden as well. Yeah, we didn't see the concert and convention centre. It's quite an impressive building, quite a huge roof. And then I would say the Hof Church as well, which is on the way to the Lion Monument. So when you walk instead of turning into the old town, you walk along the lake, you will pass by the church, the Hof church and then you will end up at the Lion Monument which is a memorial for the fallen soldiers. So it's an impressive big lion carved in stone and actually next to it is the best ice cream.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Ah, okay, tell us about that.

Celine Deplazes

It's called Gelateria dell' Alpi and they have very interesting flavours. Basil, sesame, all kinds of. Yeah, what you wouldn't expect.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, great. So all the places that you mentioned there, they can all be reached easily on foot, can they?

Celine Deplazes

Yes. So I've now walked from the Jesuit church across the bridge into the old town. It's like a five minute walk. And if you would start by the train station it's another like five minutes and from one end to the other in the old town again it's like 10 minutes. So it's really super easy. I live in Lucerne since five years and I really hardly ever take a bus. I just walk or I cycle. It's the way to go and the way you will explore all the different, all the different things. And that's how we locals do it. So if you want to be local, just walk.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, I mean the alleyways and the streets, there's lots of twists and turns, isn't there? And you think you've been down this street before, but oh no, you see something that you haven't seen before.

Celine Deplazes

Yeah, exactly. And also, so our high season is from June to September and the city gets very busy, but as soon as you get away from all these hotspots, you turn left into a small alley and there's no one anymore or just locals. So really try. Of course you want to see all the hotspots and all the highlights in the city, but my recommendation is always just go somewhere else. And there are so many beautiful hidden spots, green areas, nature, just two minutes away from the hot spots.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, okay. And do you have a favourite season in Lucerne?

Celine Deplazes

Hard question. I think as a kid I always loved summer. I always wanted to have summer only, but now I really love all the four seasons and if I had to choose one, it would probably be autumn. So October, September. October is beautiful because this is where the light is so special. It's not too hot anymore, but still you can sit outside, like the restaurant in the back here. All the restaurants in Lucerne, they have options to sit outside, to have a drink, to eat something. And also the mountains, like the colours of the leaves are changing, so it's a beautiful time to do hiking as well. So I'd probably say that, but it's really a hard question.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, for sure. And you mentioned earlier too that the lake cruises, the lake doesn't freeze, so you can go on a lake cruise all year round.

Celine Deplazes

Yes, yeah, every day, basically. And what's actually a really nice option is to do a lunch cruise on the lake. So every day there's a boat departing at 12 o'clock and then returning at 1:45 back in the city. And you can have lunch on that boat. So that's a nice option to combine it if you're a bit short in time. And also I would like to quickly mention the new product that they're having launched in 29 days actually. It's called the Legends of Lake Lucerne. So that's a steamboat, an old steamboat that normally, yeah, 500 people can be on that boat, but for this specific product there will only be a maximum of 60 people. So it's very exclusive. And central Switzerland has a lot of history. So during the cruise they will explain the history, how Switzerland has been founded, the legends and all these stories. And also you will have a five course lunch. So it's a beautiful experience where you really get to experience and get to go to the heart of Switzerland.

Carolyn Schönafinger

And quite exclusive too if there are only 60 people on a 500 person boat. Fantastic.

Celine Deplazes

Exactly.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, so I can see some probably what look more like residential buildings there. Whereabouts are you?

Celine Deplazes

So I'm walking a bit uphill. That's why I'm breathing a bit. I'm walking towards the Musegg Wall. So we've left the old town now and we're walking uphill. And this is a bit more residential area. It also says there's a lot of private signage so people are not entering because this is. Yeah. The way to the Musegg Wall. The Musegg Wall is the old fortification wall of Lucerne and it's actually one of the only ones in Switzerland. It's about 800 metres long and it has about nine. It has nine towers, four of them you can still climb. And the best about it, it's free of charge to visit, so you don't need to pay anything. And it's open always from April to November and that's what we're gonna do now.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Excellent. So you have to spend a bit of energy to get there, but you don't have to spend any money.

Celine Deplazes

No, exactly.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Great. And I bet there's some amazing views from on top of the wall.

Celine Deplazes

I was gonna say it's the best view, actually. Some history and the best view.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay.

Celine Deplazes

And all of this for free.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah. So do you have any, are there any fun facts about about the the wall?

Celine Deplazes

Yeah. So there is one tower. It's the time tower, Zytturm, and it's the only clock in Lucerne that is allowed to ring one minute earlier than all the other ones.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Right.

Celine Deplazes

So when you hear this one, you know. Oh, it's nearly, it's nearly 12:00 or nearly 11:00.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Right, okay. And why? Is there a particular reason it was allowed to ring a minute early?

Celine Deplazes

It was, I could imagine, it's probably just in honour of this old clock because it's still the clock from I think the 16th century. So quite an old clock.

Carolyn Schönafinger

And it looks like quite a leafy area there too. There's lots of, lots of beautiful trees.

Celine Deplazes

Exactly. That's what I was saying when I said two minutes out of the old town, you're in nature. So, yeah, beautiful area. There's also a small cafe behind the wall. I will take you there in the end to reward myself for walking uphill.

Carolyn Schönafinger

You said that the walls were the original fortifications. And then I guess the river, like, also acted as a bit of a fortification as well.

Celine Deplazes

Yes. So the river. And actually Chapel Bridge is also part of the fortification. So the name Chapel Bridge is because it connects the chapel and the church. And there was actually more than one bridge. So there was a second bridge that connected the Hof church and the chapel. The Hof Church we didn't see. That's the other church I mentioned. But it got destroyed in order to build the five star hotels. But this was also part of the fortification. Exactly.

Carolyn Schönafinger

One thing we didn't talk about actually earlier when we were near the Chapel Bridge, is that it was actually burnt in the 1990s, wasn't it?

Celine Deplazes

Yeah. So 1993, the bridge was burned. A very, yeah, unfortunate guy was walking over the bridge and he was smoking. Not very clever on a wooden bridge. And then he was throwing his cigarette, he thought, into the water. But there was a little boat and in this boat there was a petrol, a barrel of petrol. Yeah. And it exploded and the whole bridge got destroyed. But fortunately, the locals, they, yeah, it was, I mean, it is a very important bridge for Lucerne, especially tourism wise. So they managed to rebuild everything. And when you pass the bridge, you have to look upside. There's also paintings. So 86 of those paintings were destroyed during this fire. But luckily some were stored for restoration, so they weren't destroyed. And those paintings, they show the history of central Switzerland and politics. So it was a bit of an educational reason why those paintings were on the Chapel bridge. So when people were walking to go into church, they also learned something.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay.

Celine Deplazes

Yeah.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Now, what's behind you? Because it looks beautiful and lush and green there. And I can see a little arch.

Celine Deplazes

Yes.

Carolyn Schönafinger

In the distance.

Celine Deplazes

I am now standing in front of the Musegg Wall. So this is the wall. Let's see if we can, yeah. And we're gonna walk up here.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay.

Celine Deplazes

And there's a little park just to, to relax. Yeah. You can sit there, drink a coffee, or do a little picnic. There's also benches.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, fantastic.

Carolyn Schönafinger

And just a few minutes from this, from the old town.

Celine Deplazes

Yes. Yeah. And this mountain here, this is Mount Pilatus. So Mount Pilatus, we are still in snow. Already in snow. So Mount Pilatus is also called our House Mountain, because within one hour from the train station, you can be on top of the mountain. So you see, it's a yeah, everything very close.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah. Fantastic. And if anyone has not yet seen our video interview with Manuela from Mount Pilatus they should definitely go back and watch that because the views from up there are just amazing.

Celine Deplazes

Yeah. So just quickly I'm gonna show you, so this is the whole wall and you see four towers. They have a red line. So those are the ones that you can actually climb. And the entrance is here. So you see, no, no ticket, nothing. I'm gonna enter some steps. Steep actually. Let me see.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Steep and narrow.

Celine Deplazes

Yes, yes, steep and narrow.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah.

Celine Deplazes

So now we're on the wall. This is all the way we can walk. And then you see the view again, Mount Rigi. And I'm just gonna continue walking. Yeah, it's a perfect photo spot actually. And then behind the wall is again very green and residential area as well.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, it looks so. So quiet and peaceful.

Celine Deplazes

Yes. Yeah, it is. So here's the city centre. This tower here is the town hall. So you can get married in there. And I always, I think for the Musegg Wall, the morning is nice because it's not too crowded.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah. And I guess especially in summer you want to get there before it gets too hot. Especially if you're climbing those steps.

Celine Deplazes

Exactly. So you see, it's beautiful. The lake, the mountain, very green.

Carolyn Schönafinger

That's a beautiful view.

Celine Deplazes

In my opinion, it's the underrated site in Lucerne. So everybody knows the Lion Monument, everybody knows Chapel Bridge. But I believe not many make their way to the Musegg Wall because it really looks a bit far. Although it isn't, as you've seen. Yeah, this is the Jesuit Church.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Beautiful. Yeah. I must admit I'd been to Lucerne a few times before I actually visited the Musegg Wall. And yeah, it really is worth visiting for sure. Right, so April to November, was it you said that the wall is open.

Celine Deplazes

Yes. So first of April to first of November. Now we see Mount Pilatus in all its beauty here. Yeah. And also quite often I get the question, which mountain should I do, which mountain excursion? And to be honest, it's a very hard question because all of them are different. So I've now talked about Mount Rigi in the back here and Mount Pilatus. And the difference between those two mountains is Mount Pilatus is higher than Mount Rigi, which means Mount Pilatus now still has snow and Mount Rigi doesn't. Mount Rigi is reachable by boat all year round, whereas Mount Pilatus is reachable only by gondola during winter time. And also I think Mount Pilatus feels more alpine and rocky, whereas Mount Rigi is more of green meadows, cows, nature. And then of course, what's very unique, and I'm sure Manuela mentioned it as well, is to sleep on Mount Pilatus. Yeah, that's just. Yeah. Amazing. When you're in the morning, there's the sunrise. You see Lake Lucerne and the city. Yeah, it's just, it's amazing. I've never done it myself, to be honest, but it's still on my bucket list.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, no, it's a, it's an amazing experience. I've been lucky enough to do it once and it was, yeah, was fantastic.

Celine Deplazes

Great. So I'm walking through or over the whole wall now, actually. The tower behind me, that's the time tower, one of the towers you could climb.

Carolyn Schönafinger

And that's the one with the clock that rings at a minute before?

Celine Deplazes

Yeah. Make sure you're not there when it's, when the, when it's, when the bell rings because it's super loud. I remember I was in there as a kid with my aunt and we weren't prepared. And. Yeah, it's super loud. So.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Good tip. Yeah. Yeah.

Celine Deplazes

Okay. And actually this is where what I wanted to show you. Now this one is the Kulturhof Hintersmusegg standing here.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yeah, sounds interesting.

Celine Deplazes

It's a, a farm in the city. And you can actually go there. They have a little store where they sell local, local bread that they made or fruits and vegetable. And in the past, they were the farm that harvested the fruits and vegetable for the Schweizerhof Lucerne. That's the five star, one of the five star hotels. But nowadays it's more for kids. There's animals as well, and they have an amazing brunch. So if you ever have the chance on a weekend, I highly recommend you go there and have brunch.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Great. So you can go and actually just see the animals as well?

Celine Deplazes

Yes, yes, I think they have, so they certainly have pigs. They have cows, I believe. Yeah.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Okay, great. And is that open all year round or only on particular days or particular months?

Celine Deplazes

So the restaurant, the restaurant is open, I believe, from Wednesday to Sunday. But the animals and the shop are open every day. I mean, the animals are anyway there and the store is open every day. And in winter they are in, I mean, the restaurant is inside, so it's warm and in summer it's outside. So that's one of the recommendations and I think something very unique also this farm inside or in the middle of a city.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yes, definitely. And again, it's just a few minutes walk from the old town, so it's incredible. You can have your city experience and your farm experience very, very close by.

Celine Deplazes

Yeah.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Great. Well, can you just give us one more look at that amazing view? I can see the lake there over your right shoulder.

Celine Deplazes

Yeah.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Yes. Amazing. It's wonderful, isn't it? All those mountains. And we started off earlier right down in the, or by the river there, by the church, the Jesuit church, which you can see there right behind you now. Yeah. So amazing. We've had a wonderful wander through Lucerne and I'm sure everyone watching is now very keen to arrive and explore it for themselves.

Celine Deplazes

Yes. So maybe just one last word. So Lucerne is, as I said, really a boutique town. You can come anytime of the year in the city. We do get snow, but not like metres of snow, but then you head to one of the mountains and you're really in winter wonderland within a couple of minutes or within one hour. So I would say if you are looking for a great hub, a great place to explore, lots of different things. This certainly is amazing. It's an amazing spot to start with.

Carolyn Schönafinger

Makes a wonderful base to explore, yeah, other parts of central Switzerland and even beyond.

Celine Deplazes

Yes, exactly.

Carolyn Schönafinger
