Sermon: Psalm 88 | “Hope Amid the Shadows of Death”

• The psalmist utters three cries of despair:
  1. The cry from the valley of the shadow of death
  2. The cry for God to do something
  3. The cry of one in need of relief
• Why does this psalm seem so hopeless?
• Why Psalm 88 is in the Bible
  1. We can approach God from within our despair and despondency.
  2. We can have hope even in the darkest moments.
     1. The psalmist is praying…period!
     2. The psalmist is praying…to the LORD.
     3. The psalmist is praying to the LORD…the God of his salvation.
     4. The psalmist is praying…persistently.
     5. The psalmist acknowledges that God is still at work in the world.
     6. The psalmist is praying with the knowledge that God is still in control of the course of his life.
  3. We have a model for how to face suffering and hardship: Jesus the Messiah
     1. Jesus is the Man of Sorrows.
     2. Jesus felt abandoned by the Lord.
     3. Jesus is able to sympathize with our weaknesses.
     4. Jesus promised that He will always be with His followers.
