It was still at the time where we did not have any vaccine. You remember those times?
Dan Harris
September 2020.
Franck Arnold
And I arrived with my family. stayed in the lockdown for two weeks without being able to go out. And I was staying in a hotel that was overseeing, so I could not cheat. I could not get out. We were stranded within four walls for two weeks. After nine days, I thought I was going mad. I said to my family I'm literally I was lying down and I said was losing it. I said we need to go out. And we were not sick. Took the family out. We just took a stroll in London just to breathe. I had not seen the hotel. It was only after two weeks because I was not able to go out. So, it's allowed to go out. It was closed. I was staying at the Sophie del St. James.
Franck Arnold cont. (00:56.471)
I took a stroll along the Embankment to go just to see the hotel. Remember, but still COVID. Still everything's closed.
Claudia Koestler
So you have never been to the Savoy before?
Franck Arnold
I had once.
Claudia Koestler
Okay
Franck Arnold
For food and drinks. After dinner, entering the hotel, going to the American bar, in and out. Yes, I remember the arrival, the lobby, but vaguely. It was a long time ago, probably 10 years ago.
Franck Arnold cont. (01:18.286)
So who doesn't know, who doesn't know the Savoy? Who hasn't heard about the storied hotel that you know was placed on the map by Mr. Cezarits and Augustus Coté. mean legends, legends who have been involved not only them but then later on so for me, as a hotelier, because that's what I do, I'm a...I do, to have the privilege of running that place is one, you know, it's and despite everything that I had in Toronto, you know, I could not let that pass.
So when I arrived here, I did not notice everything was closed. So, we come around and I'm like, okay, well, it's deserted and I go to the front of the hotel, this storied front where you drive on the right-hand side of the road and you see Count Peter's statue on top and you see all these glamorous cars arriving. There is nothing. The door is closed. It's like a B-movie series where everything has gone down, there's no one alive. And I remember it was a Sunday morning and we go about around the hotel and I don’t see anything, any life.
And you know, I was expecting something much grander, but because of the circumstances, I looked at my wife and I started having cold sweats and I was like, what did I do?
So it is only on Monday that I go to introduce myself to the team and I enter the hotel.
Franck Arnold cont...(02:57.719)
And here is the Savoy. And then, you know, was like, yes, I'm at the Savoy. I just entered the lobby and I...and I'm going to...Sorry.
Franck Arnold cont. (03:19.126)
And this thing, you know, they respond, it's scary. You're scary. When I entered the Savoy, then and entered the lobby. Well, now, I know what that was. What my mission was. I'm going to bring this Savoy back on the map. And I really felt that was my mission. As a custodian, know, inheriting this legacy and especially those circumstances, you know, the team had been reduced, people had gone back home. It was a very difficult time. We were going to open in October, the first of October, but the circumstances were very, very special.
