Well, good morning. It is so good to see all of you here worshiping with us today. And I like to welcome all of you here at this campus at Bonnie Oaks, but all of our campuses and all of our venues. And those of you that are worshiping with us online, if I haven't a chance to meet you personally, I'm Tony Walliser. I'm one of the pastors here at Silverdale and have the privilege today to share with you God's word. So this one I encourage you to go and take your Bibles and open up in the New Testament to the Gospel of Luke. You can turn to Luke chapter 13, turn to Luke 13. Also, if you got a smartphone, you can open your Bible app to Luke 13. And then do this. Take out these Bible study outlines that we provide for you. We give you these outlines so you can follow along and take notes as we study God's word together. We are in a series, Joy with Jesus, where we're looking in the Gospel of Luke, several passages where Jesus teaches us how to experience joy in different circumstances. And today specifically, we're going to learn about the joy of deliverance. That when Christ delivers us, it produces incredible joy. Now, way back in the year 2000, I happened to have been an associate pastor here at our church, Silverdale, for five years. But that year they called me to be the lead pastor. Well, a few um weeks after that event, um, my wife Susan and I, we went on a date. And so we typically would take a weeknight and we would go out to dinner and then we'd go to the mall and literally just walk the mall and talk. Well, that night, as we're walking the mall, we happened to see this photo booth. And we had never taken a couple's photo before in a in a photo booth before. And we thought, oh, that could be pretty cool and maybe a little romantic. Who knows, right? And so the fact is that I'm like, hey, would you like to do the photo booth? And she said sure. So we got in the photo booth, we pulled the curtain back. And back in that day, they did not take credit cards at these photo booths, right? You had to pay cash, and it happened to be five dollars. Didn't have a five dollar bill, but I did have five ones, okay? And so we're sitting there, and so I'm starting to feed the money into this machine to take the first one, goes in, one dollar, no problem. Second one goes in, no dollar, no problem. Third one goes in, no problem. Fourth one, okay, kicks it back. I'm straightening it out, you know. Take a few times, it finally takes the fourth one. But then the fifth one, okay? So I feed it, it's kicking back. I'm straightening it. I'm doing, I'm like, I don't know what's wrong. This is a perfectly, and I'm trying again and again, and with every rejection, I'm getting a little frustrated, right? I'm getting a little bit out of shape. What's going on here? You know, about 10 minutes of this is going on, and Susan says, Hey, it's just four dollars. Let's just leave. And I go, No, I'm not leaving. This is a scam. I don't even think there's a camera in this booth. They just steal your money. So I'm like, I'm not leaving until we get our photos. And so I'm trying again and again and again. Finally, another five minutes, I'm like, forget it, we're done. And we get out. So we, you know, um, pull the curtain back, and when we step out of the photo booth, the mall had closed. True story. Okay. Totally black, right? We're the only ones there. I go to the, you know, the closest exit, they're locked. No panic bars, we're locked in. We go to another one, it's locked. I'm like, oh my goodness, we're gonna get arrested. And I just imagine the headline in the news new pastor of Silverton Baptist Church arrested, you know, at you know, Hamilton Place Mall. Thank the Lord. We finally found an exit hall. We got out of there. Thank you, Jesus. But the whole event was because I was getting bent out of shape because that machine had stolen $4 from me, right? Well, in today's passage, we're gonna find a couple of people that are bent out of shape. You're gonna find one lady who's physically bent over, and Jesus is gonna heal her. But you're gonna find a religious man who's also bent out of shape as well, and Jesus wants to heal him, but he refuses it. So today we're gonna learn how to experience deliverance from the Lord, and the byproduct of that deliverance is joy. So let's look at two things that Jesus tries to deliver us from. Java Sonia outline. Number one is this. First of all, we can be delivered from oppressive suffering. Delivered from oppressive suffering. Maybe you're here today and you're going through some kind of trauma, some kind of pressure, some kind of worry, some kind of pain, and it's overwhelming. I want Jesus to deliver you. Notice how Jesus did this in verse 10 of Luke chapter 13. Look what God's word says. As he, that's Jesus, was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. A woman was there who had been disabled by a spirit for over 18 years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, Woman, you're free of your disability. Then he laid his hands on her, and instantly she was restored and began to glorify God. Now, this is an amazing story. Here's a woman who suffered with this disability for 18 years. Think of that. I mean, maybe it just started with bad posture and she's been over, but eventually the Bible says she is bent completely over and she cannot straighten herself out. And so imagine what this life has been like. 18 years is probably painful. I mean, she can't see the sky, she can't look people in the eyes. All she sees is dirt. She sees her feet, she sees other people's feet. You can imagine that eating was hard, drinking was hard, she probably slept in a fetal position. 18 years she's dealt with this. Now, this is a sad situation. But what we discover is that Luke gives us a little detail of how she became disabled. Now, something you need to know about the writer Luke. Luke is a physician. He wrote the Gospel of Luke and he also wrote the book of Acts. And by being a physician, Luke will often add details about a person's illness that the other gospels don't include. He will in some places talk about, okay, this is the injury or this is the disease, and he'll give the details because he's a doctor and he can give those kind of details. But he the details he gives here is really interesting. He doesn't say it's an illness, not a disease, not an injury, not from a stroke. He uses that word in other places, not scoliosis, he'll use that word in other places. He says she has been disabled by a spirit. And so there is some evil, demonic spirit that is involved in her illness. Notice how Jesus describes it in verse 16. Satan has bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for 18 years, shouldn't she be un tied from this bondage? Now, something you need to remember not all illnesses are demonically related, okay? In fact, whenever you study the scriptures, you'll see in the Gospels that Jesus healed every disease known to man. He had authority over all disease, right? He could heal them all. So dozens of times Jesus is healing all these different people. There's only seven occasions that it's mentioned in the Gospels that a person's illness was caused by a demonic spirit, okay? And so just because you're sick, nobody here is saying you got a demon, okay? We're not saying that. I mean, um, I had a kidney stone for two months. It's not like I had a demon of kidney stone here, right? In Jesus' name be gone. I wish it was that easy, right? It wasn't, okay? But the thing is, so so, okay, not all illnesses are because of demonic influence. But this one, we don't know the physiological causes, but they were secondary to the main cause, which was there was some demonic influence here. Now, what's real interesting, whenever you read the gospels, you'll see Jesus delivering people who are what we would call demonized. They're controlled by a demonic spirit. Okay? And many times, whenever you see some see Jesus deliver somebody who's demonized, it's often dramatic. It's even a little scary. I mean, Jesus is rebuking that demon and calling that demon out. And so it's a real power event that's taking place. You don't see that at all here. Jesus is not commanding and talking to a demon. No, Jesus just talks to the woman. Also, what's interesting about this story is that Jesus touches her. Nowhere in any other passage in the Gospels, when Jesus casts out a demon, does he touch the person before he casts the thing out? And so what do we have here? What we know is that this woman is not demonized. She's not controlled by a demonic spirit, and yet her illness does have its root in some kind of evil spirit influence and lies. Now, doctors, even today, will say there's an incredible connection between our mind and our body. And there are a number of people that will believe they are sick, and they believe it, and guess what? They become physically sick in that area, even though there may not be a physical reason for that sickness. And so all we know here is that this woman, she can't stand up. Right? Maybe she went to the doctor and the doctor said, I see no physical reason why you can't stand up. And she goes, I can't, right? And maybe people have said, just straighten up, I can't. Will you try? I can't. Will you look up? I can't. Will you will you just stand up? I can't, right? See, the reality is that a lot of us need to get healed from our can't. See, the reality is that sometimes God asks us to do something and Satan convinces us we can't. You need to stop drinking, I can't. Stop looking at porn, I can't. Get past that hurt and forgive that person who hurt you. I can't, right? And so we make these excuses why we can't do it. And yet many times it's just alive, the evil one, that keeps us in bondage. Um many of you know one of our pastors, Chuck Tanner. And Chuck Tanner, um, a number of years back, he was having these debilitating migraine headaches. And um, so he just, I mean, every week he'd have multiple migraine headaches. And um, now his mom had died from a brain tumor. And so he's like, you know, I gotta get this thing checked out. So he goes to the doctor and they do these battery of tests on him, and they look at him and they go, We can't find any physical reason why you're having these headaches. There's nothing there. And um, and so Chuck said, Okay, I guess Lord help me, I'm just gonna live with it, right? And so he did. And then one day he's he's listening on the radio and he hears the testimony of Josh McDowell. Josh McDowell is a Christian apologist, and Josh McDowell's telling this story of his really painful childhood and a very abusive dad, and where he came to the place where he forgave his dad and released the hurt to the Lord. And Chuck hears that testimony, he's like, that's me. I mean, I came from a very painful childhood and a very abusive dad, and I need to forgive my dad as well. And so he came to the place where he forgave his dad from his heart and he released the hurt to the Lord. Now several weeks went by, and Chuck said, suddenly he realized, man, I haven't had a headache in several weeks. What's going on? I mean, what happened is as you began to trail back and look back at when his headache stopped, he realized it was whenever he forgave his dad. The truth is this Satan wants to keep you bound. One of the greatest tools that Satan have is to breathe a lie in your mind. He can erect a stronghold in your thinking. Why? Because whoever controls your thinking controls you. And if you believe his lies, he's got you. That's why the Bible says in Ephesians 4, do not give the devil a foothold. You give the devil an inch, he'll steal your smile, okay? The reality is that he wants to keep us in bondage, but Jesus Christ wants to set us free. So how does that happen? Well, John, let's own your outline. You gotta be touched by Jesus. How are you delivered? Well, you get touched by Jesus. Now, what Luke does is he moves from the woman, now he pans to Jesus, and what he does is he shows us the steps that Jesus uses to deliver this woman. Look at them, they're found in verse 12. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, Woman, you are free of your disability. Then he laid his hands on her and instantly she was restored and began to glorify God. And so let's go through those steps. First of all, Jesus saw her, right? Everybody else may have dismissed her, may have overlooked her, may have thought, okay, she's not that important. She's just this disabled person that's lived with this for 18 years. But listen, Jesus saw her. Jesus saw her, knew her, knew what she was going through. Good news, church, Jesus sees you as well. And then what happens next? Next, Jesus summons her. He says, Come over, right? Now, this may have been painful for her to do. It may have been embarrassing. Here we are in this group, and I'm walking over to where Jesus is. Why would Jesus do that? Because he was making her participate in what he was going to do, this healing. And then the third thing he does, what is it? He um he spoke freedom to her. He spoke over her. Now I love this image here where it has this bent over woman, and what's Jesus doing? Jesus is bending over, looking at her eyeball to eyeball. Right? I mean, this woman probably had eyes of fear, and then she hears and sees Jesus, and she has eyes of hope. And Jesus looks her in the eyes and says, You're whole. I see you, I love you, you're healed, you're whole. You are seen. Be delivered, right? Stop believing the lies the world has to give you. The evil one feeds to you. Believe what I have to say to you. And then what does Jesus do? Jesus straightens her. Jesus touches her, right? I mean, think about it. She's heard this deliverance, but then Jesus touches her, probably straightens her up. I mean, think about that. The very hands that puts the stars in the universe, those hands reach to her and put her in her place. The same nail pierced hands that curled in agony on the cross one day, reached to her, curled around her arms, and lifted her up. And now she is whole and she is healed. Folks, Jesus wants to do the same thing. He sees you, he summons you, he speaks to you, and then he straightens you up. And folks, what do you do when the Lord delivers you? Well, notice what she did. Look at it in verse 13. Instantly she was restored and began to glorify God. Yeah, I imagine. 18 years been over in pain, right? She's praising the Lord. I don't know exactly how she praised the Lord. It doesn't say. She could be dancing, maybe for the first time in 18 years. Maybe she's got tears in her eyes. She's crying. Maybe she's shouting, hallelujah. Maybe she's singing, right? If she was around today, she may sing that old hymn. Love lifted me. Love lifted me. When nothing else could help, love lifted me, right? Here this woman is, man. She has been healed and she is now filled with incredible joy. She's praising the Lord. Now, church, what Jesus did then, Jesus can do now. Amen. He's the same God yesterday, today, and forever. What Jesus did then, Jesus can do now. Some of you right now, you are bent over by the weight of the world. Some of you are bent out of shape because of some pain or hurt or sorrow or you know, frustration or suffering. Jesus sees you. He knows what you're going through. You can hide it with a smile. He sees you when nobody else in this room does. And then what does he do? He summons you. Come to him. Jesus said, Come to me, all of you who are weary, bent over with burdens. And then what does he do? He speaks truth to you. Church, stop believing the lies of this world. Believe what God says about you. And then what does he do? He straightens you up. And so here you have this poor crippled woman that's been oppressed for 18 years. Jesus delivers her. She's filled with joy, right? That's the first kind of deliverance. Hallelujah. Jesus can deliver us from that oppression. But then there's a second kind of deliverance. Draw this on your outline. You can be delivered from religious rules. You can be delivered from religious rules. And so imagine here you got the synagogue, woman's been healed, everybody's going crazy. Hallelujah. Thank you, Lord. And then what happens? We'll look at verse 14. But, right, everybody's rejoicing, but the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, There are six days when work should be done. Therefore, come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day. This guy's indignant. What does that mean? That means he's angry. He's filled with rage, right? He's offended. And then he's going to quote even Scripture. Exodus chapter 20 is one of the Ten Commandments. It says, There are six days when work should be done, right? He's basically saying, There ain't no healing gonna be done in my synagogue on the Sabbath. Now you go, why in the world is this guy so upset? Because he's bound by religious rules. And Jesus offends him because he's broken one of their man-made rules. See, the reality is this God has given us his word, given the law, right? In the New Testament. And what happens is the religious leaders in Jesus' day, what they wanted to do is to make sure that nobody would break any of the Ten Commandments. They would add additional laws around it, like a fence, right? They added 613 extra laws. And you name it, Sabbath day became one of the most oppressive days. Instead of a day of rest, it was a day of rules. Oh my goodness. It's like a bunch of government bureaucrats got a hold of God's law and just made it complicated for all of us to try to live under. And so what happens? These religious people, that is how their relationship with God is. It's all based on do's and don'ts. It's their checklist. Okay, I gotta do all these do's and don't do these don'ts. And if I do the do's and don't do the don'ts, then maybe God will be pleased with me. Can I just tell you, if your relationship with God is a checklist and it's all based on rules, you have no joy. You're overwhelmed with oppression all the time. You're miserable. And so this guy's like, I'm miserable, I want everybody else to be miserable too. That's what's happening here, right? And so what happens? Somebody gets free in Jesus, starts getting happy in Jesus. Ho ho! No, we can't have that in my synagogue. Now there's nothing new here. I mean, you can go all the way back in the Old Testament. A real interesting story in 2 Samuel chapter 6. You have King David. He's bringing the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem. And the the priests are carrying the ark, and the people, there's music going on, people are shouting and singing and dancing. And the Bible says that David danced before the Lord with all his might. Now, I don't know what kind of moves David had, right? I'm not sure. And maybe he just got happy feet and his feet just started moving around. I don't know. But he's dancing before the Lord with all his might. And while he's dancing, coming into Jerusalem, his wife, Michael, sees him out a window. And the Bible says she despised him because he was embarrassing himself with the way he was dancing. I try to tell that to my wife. She wants me to go dancing with her. I'm like, look, I'm gonna embarrass you with my dancing, okay? So apparently David embarrassed Michael, okay? And so David comes in and he is um, you know, he's all excited. He wants to bless his family, and when he comes in, she decides, I'm gonna bless him out. And she basically says, Oh, how the king dignified himself today. You were dancing like a bunch of slave girls. That's what you were doing. You were you were humiliating yourself, right? And David was not gonna allow this woman to steal his joy. Look at how he responds in 2 Samuel 6. It was before the Lord. And I will humble myself and be even more undignified than this. You see, the reality is almost in every church, you get somebody get on fire for Jesus and celebrate the freedom they have in Jesus. There's a cold water committee that will just throw cold water on you, right? And they'll look down at you with a holier than now expression, right? How dare you get out of hand, right? And the fact is, is that here, this woman has been delivered, and yet the religious leader he wasn't gonna put up with it. And so what's real interesting is that he gives a command to the crowd. He doesn't address Jesus. Check it out, look at it, verse 14. He responded by telling the crowd. Okay? Now, he doesn't confront Jesus. Now, Jesus is the guy who did the healing. Why don't you confront Jesus if you're so bit out of shape about this? No, I'm not going to confront Jesus, but I will tell the crowd, and Jesus will overhear my command of this synagogue, right? You know what we call that kind of person? This is a passive aggressive person. This is a person that guess what they'll do is they'll they'll tell somebody else, expecting you to hear. They won't talk to you directly. Why? Because they don't want personal accountability with you. They don't want to confront you. They'll tell somebody else and then expect you to hear through the grapevine. Can I just tell you that is the worst kind of communication, right? So this guy, he wouldn't confront Jesus, but let me just tell you something. Jesus had no problem confronting him. Check it out. Look at it. Verse 15. But the Lord answered him and said, hypocrites, woo! Right? In your face, right? Hypocrites. Doesn't each one of you untie his ox and donkey from the feeding trough on the Sabbath and lead it to water? Satan has bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for 18 years. Shouldn't she be untied from this bondage on the Sabbath day? You see, the religious leaders, they had these 613 Sabbath laws, but they all had also had these exceptions. And all the exceptions were for the animals, right? And so, hey, you know what, you had an ox, you got a donkey, you gotta feed it, you gotta water it. So obviously you got to do those things on the Sabbath, but that's not the case for people. So, in essence, what Jesus is saying, you seem to care for animals better than you care for people, right? Your rules are oppressive to people. But can I just tell you, I think that's our culture as well. We care more about animals than we do people, right? I mean, you see the commercials, and I get my heart is you know broken when I see these little puppies, please adopt me, and oh my goodness, you're so cute, and and golly, they need they need a home. Absolutely they do, right? And yet, you know, we don't feel any compassion for the millions of kids that need foster care or adopted in America, right? We we care more about animals than we do people. I mean, how about this one? What there's laws on our books. You know what? If you touch the egg of a bald eagle, there's four years imprisonment and thousands of dollars of fines. Just touching a bald eagle egg. You go, why? Because it's a potential eagle. And yet in America, we can abort a potential child with no problem at all. See, we we live in an upside-down world. We care more about animals than we do people. Now, listen, we should care for animals, feed them, protect them, care for them, absolutely. But listen, animals are not made in the image of God. You and I are, and humans are of much greater worth than any animal, and Jesus is saying, you care more for your donkeys than you do this woman. Something's wrong with that. And so you go, all right, this guy's eat up with legalism with religious rules. How do you get delivered from religious rules? By believing in Jesus Christ. That's how. Jot that on your outline. How? By believing Jesus' affirmation. Listen, rules are not gonna save you, but faith in Jesus Christ does. Following the letter of the law is not going to deliver you, but following Jesus, who fulfills all the letter of the law, will deliver you. See, we think that rules are gonna keep us in line. They don't externally, but faith in Jesus Christ changes us from the inside out. And so after Jesus confronts this hypocrisy, what does he do next? Look at it in verse 16. He makes an affirmation about this woman. Satan is bound this woman, a daughter of Abraham, for 18 years. Shouldn't she be untied from this bondage on the Sabbath day? Now we don't know this woman's name, but Jesus makes sure we hear her identity. Who is she? She is a daughter of Abraham. You go, what does that mean? Well, Abraham is the father of faith. And so everyone who has faith becomes a child of Abraham. Now, obviously, this woman, she's of Jewish descent. She is, her father is Abraham, both physically but also spiritually. Good news, church. If you have faith in Jesus Christ, you are a daughter and son of Abraham. You're a descendant of Abraham. Look at how the Apostle Paul puts this. I love this passage. Galatians 3. He says, just like Abraham, who believed God and it was credited to him for righteousness, you know then that those who have faith, these are Abraham's descendants. What's it saying? It's saying at the moment that you have faith in Jesus Christ, you are credited with the righteousness of Jesus Christ, and you become Abraham's descendants. Meaning what? I have all the blessings of Abraham in Jesus Christ. Now you may go, okay, if it's found, freedom is found in faith in Jesus Christ, then why did God give the law in the first place? Because the law was designed to lead us until we finally came to Jesus Christ. I mean, the law never could save us, but the law pointed us to Jesus Christ. Notice again how Paul says this in Galatians 3. He says this the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we're no longer under the supervision of the law. Let me see if I didn't explain it like this. When my kids were young and they were learning how to ride a bike, one of the things we would do early on, we would put, you know, training wheels on their little bicycles. And those little wheels on the back would sort of keep them balanced while they're learning to ride the bike. And then once they learn how to balance and ride the bike, we would remove the training wheels. Why? Because they didn't need them anymore, right? You don't see anybody that's riding in the Tour de France with training wheels on their bikes, right? No, they've gotten beyond that. Well, that's what Paul's saying. Paul's saying, look, God's given us the law, and early on in our relationship with God, it may feel like I'm just following rules, but God doesn't want you to stay there. Listen, God does not want your relationship to him be based on rules. He wants it to be a true relationship, right? I mean, it's not about doing and not doing, it's about talking to the Lord. It's about praying to him and talking to him and getting in his word and him speaking to you. Listen, whenever the Spirit of God is working in and through your life, you don't need the training wheels of the law anymore because you're now free in Jesus Christ. Notice how Jesus puts this in John 8. You'll know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Church, God wants you free. It's not by being a legalist and trying to keep the law and following the letter of the law. No, it's about walking with Jesus and obeying Jesus, and suddenly you find yourself free in Jesus. And so, both of these things are deliverance that Jesus gives. What's the result? Well, job this on your outline. Final thing is this being delivered produces joy. Whenever you and I are delivered, either from oppression or from legalism, joy is what's produced. Look at it, verse 17. When he had said these things, all his adversaries were humiliated. But the whole crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things he was doing. Jesus' opponents were put to shame, but the crowds they were celebrating. Now here's my question for you today. In your life, be real with yourself. Where are you bent over somewhere? Where are you oppressed? Where are you overwhelmed? Where are you bent out of shape? It may be from some hurt, maybe some hang-up, some habit. The good news, folks, Jesus Christ is here and he wants to deliver you. Jesus is here and he wants to deliver you. And you may be hearing, like, you know what, I need somebody to come alongside and help lift me up. Well, good news. You know what our church has? We have a ministry called Celebrate Recovery, and it meets every Thursday night, and it's designed to help you with your hurts, your habits, and your hangups. People are there filled with the Spirit, tools and hands of Jesus Christ to help you. So today, where are you oppressed? Follow these steps. Understand Jesus sees you. You can hide it to everybody else, but Jesus sees you. Jesus calls you to himself. You can't do it on your own. Thirdly, Jesus wants to speak truth to you. You can't get delivered if you keep believing the lies of this world. And then finally, Jesus will straighten you up. He'll touch you, and he'll deliver you. And I'm telling you, when Jesus Christ delivers you, there is joy from the Lord. Amen. Let's pray together. Father, thank you so much for your word. Lord Jesus, you are the deliverer. I am so thankful that you're the one who makes a way when there is no way. Lord, you know every person in this room. You know their hurts. You know their struggles. You know the areas where they have been held captive by the evil one. Lord Jesus, set the captives free today. Meet with us. Even in this moment, we trust you to do your supernatural work of healing. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
