45. Interviewing Robert Steele: The Author of Banned From California

Aster Hwang, Kenneth Kang

Aster's back from his long break (I promise I'll be back next week) with a steamy interview with Robert Steele, the author of Banned from California, a biography of Jim Foshee, a gay runaway—and later, gay rights activist—who, after a childhood spent first in an orphanage and then a mental hospital, found himself in the underground world of the early queer scene of 1950s Los Angeles.  Robert explains why he chose Jim as the subject of his book, how Jim endured his abusive childhood and his time in prison, and how he finally transitioned into a gay rights activist and queer history researcher. Robert and Aster also discuss themes such as hypersexuality in gay men culture and Jim's resilience.
