Welcome back . This is episode number 149 of the Healthy Diabetic Podcast . Today , it's really important that I get this disclaimer out of the way , because I'm going to talk about some controversial I don't even know how to describe it . We'll just call it controversial ways to treat yourself when you're sick , because , as you guys know , I live my life in a very holistic way . Sometimes that clashes with other people's stop processes . It clashes 100% with thenot 100% but it clashes definitely with , sometimes , what I get recommended from a doctor or one of my doctors on how to treat something . So I just wanted to make sure that that was in front of this disclaimer , because this is going to probably be a little bit of controversial stuff . Maybe you'll want to try some of this stuff , but if you are going to try some of the things that I am recommending , especially some of the essential oil stuff that I do when I'm sick , please make sure that you are consulting your physician before you do it . Okay , here we go . Remember , nothing that you hear on this podcast should be considered medical advice or otherwise . Please always consult your medical team before making any changes to your diabetes management or , in this case , to your overall health . Okay , we got that out of the way . Now that disclaimer is in there . Hopefully no one is going to come back and bite me in the butt . So , as you guys know , and actually before I start with this , I just want to do this quick plug-in and just remind you that , if you aren't following the podcast , to make sure to click that subscribe button , because there's going to be so many incredible conversations coming up within the next two months . I'm going to explain that here in a second . So if you haven't subscribed to the show , please do so . You're notified when new episodes are dropped every single week . The last thing is , I want you to make sure that if you know someone at least one person that is affected by diabetes , please send them the link to the show , tell them about the show because , like I said , there's just going to be so many really cool conversations , especially if you are a caregiver of a young diabetic . There's going to be some really , really cool conversations that are going to be very , very valuable and , of course , every single episode that I put out I think is valuable . I hope you guys are thinking that it's valuable as well . I hope you guys get value as well .
Speaker 1Okay , so let's dive into the story . So , as you guys know , if you've been listening for the last couple weeks , I had an incredible opportunity in July to volunteer my time five days , basically in five nights , to Camp Hamway ran by Life Care Alliance , and this is a camp for young diabetics , so it's a teen camp . I think the average age is probably 14 or 15 . I think the ages of the week that I was there because they do this for three weeks to two teen weeks and one week for a junior week that they call it where it's , you know , I think it's what eight to 12 years old , maybe 13 . And the teen week is like 14 to 18 , something like that .
Speaker 1Anyways , this is one of the most incredible experiences of my coaching career . I've had a lot of really cool experiences , but it was extra special for me because it was a camp for diabetics to be educated and have fun . And you guys know me , I'm a coach at heart when I get out with all of these young teenagers and they think they're amazing at sports and I'm amazing at sports , you know I'm not going down so outside , five night and five day camp where there's tons of field games , there's tons of competition , there's tons of fun oh man , I was shining . So it was such a cool experience down to being able to watch the medical team , because at this camp because everyone has diabetes they have a medical team of endocrinologists there , they have nurses there , they have PEs there . They've got the works , they've got dieticians there to provide all the food and the medical team was one of the coolest things to watch of how they were interacting with the kids . They have something called a check and inject before every single meal , so everyone checks their blood sugar and then they talk to the medical staff and they figure out how much they're going to dose for the specific meal . All to help the young kid understand how to actually dose for a meal and what to look for and how to think about it . It's a super cool process , super cool interactions and watching all of that by each kid , of a kid that might have ADHD , a kid that might be dealing with emotions , a kid that might be dealing with whatever you know . It was so cool to watch . Anyways , that's not part of this story , but just I wanted to give you guys some back , some understanding of why this is this story is going to be so important , so fast forward .
Speaker 1I got sick the last day of camp . There was some sinus bug going around , so got sick . That was fun . On the last day of camp , that sickness continued throughout for basically a whole another week and a half , almost two weeks Sinus infection . It was pretty significant in terms of headache pressure . There was no other symptoms . So I was not thinking COVID whatsoever , because it was just . It was just sinus pressure , just sinus infection stuff . So I dealt with that and I dealt with that in a specific way and I'm going to explain it , because I actually got sick twice in since I got back , and I got back at the very beginning of August and it's like the very middle of August . So I got a really bad sinus infection and then I got which I just got over over the last two days , really the last three days I got a ridiculous GI bug . I mean , we're talking ridiculous . This thing was disgusting , disgusting GI bug and I really wanted to sit down . For hopefully this will only take me 15 to 20 minutes to go through my spiel about how I , how I help my symptoms when I'm sick , regardless of what it is .
Speaker 1I did the same types of things that I'm about to talk about when I was sick with COVID in 2020 . Every time I'm sick , this is what I do , and I didn't take one single medication , not one , not Tylenol , nothing to improve symptoms , nothing , no types of medication . It was all supplementation and lots of rest and as much sleep as you can get . So I wanted to take some time to go through this to give you guys some understanding of that . You have options that are really really good for your system and in the case of the GI bug , the last thing that I did was I was sick . The last thing I wanted to do is introduce more and more chemicals , because some over the counter medications that we take have a lot of chemicals in them . It's part of the makeup of the medication and I me personally I don't like to do that to myself . If I had to take some extra strength Tylenol , if I had to take some extra strength Motrin because of something , then I will , but I don't even think we have it . Actually , I know we don't even have that stuff in the house Because my wife is 100% on board and I am too with using essential oils as much as possible to treat symptoms , and that's what I did . So we're gonna go over exactly what I did specifically for this GI bug . It was basically around the same things for the sinus infection .
Speaker 1Okay , so the very first thing I did because the first symptoms that happened was on a Sunday and it was very mild I actually took the girls to the park , to a local park , and I just started feeling a little bit weak and had some mild discomfort GI , just mild , super mild . Nothing really started really bad , nothing was , you know , started getting really bad until that night . For me , when I first start getting symptoms , the symptoms are exacerbated at bedtime . So what did I do ? Well , when the symptoms really started coming on , the first thing I started doing is trying to drink some water , and that lasted for maybe four or five hours because , as you know , if you've ever had GI problems , the first thing that probably starts happening is you get a lot of discomfort GI-wise and you probably feel like at least I did that you had to run to the toilet every five seconds and either come out of either end Well , mine was coming out of the front , so I felt like every literally five or 10 minutes that I had to throw up , and I didn't have to . And the most annoying part about it is that it kept going , it kept lasting , it kept going on , it kept going on , it kept going on , with not even really getting any relief .
And the other thing I wanna add to this is when I knew it was a GI problem and this is another thing that I would encourage you guys to start maybe trying to recognize when you are sick is what are the common things that you're seeing with your body ? Right For me , I got 100% tell that I was super inflamed , that I was super . I was super inflamed . I felt super bloated . It was very uncomfortable outside of the discomfort of feeling that I had to throw up .
Speaker 1So about midnight , one o'clock , couldn't fall asleep , couldn't drink anything , couldn't eat anything , because every time I would , it felt like it was gonna come up . So what I did was and this is something that my wife gets on me sometimes about not a bad way , but I feel like every time I do it I feel better . So I made myself throw up , I did it . I'm gonna say it . I did it , I did it . I put my fingers down my throat and I made myself throw up . I just did it and I was like sweet , it worked . I'm getting some relief , but guess what ? That only lasts for like 15 minutes .
Speaker 1So I went back and I also mind you that I'm sleeping in the spare bedroom because I feel like crap . So I'm not sleeping in my normal bed with my wife and our toddler that wakes up around that time and wants some milk because we're still breastfeeding her and she wants some mommy and all this crap . So I was sleeping in the other room . My bathroom that I use is in the basement in my office because I had to attach to my office . So I'm like walking my happy butt out of bed , getting up out of bed and walking downstairs like every half hour because something's going on . I feel like I'm either gonna throw up or poop myself or whatever , and so this went on the rest of the night . So every hour or so I'm trying to make myself throw up to get some relief . Because it was that bad . I couldn't stand the pressure . There's so much GI pressure .
Speaker 1So this happened pretty much that whole night and I finally got to sleep , I think around three or four o'clock , and I remember waking up and I'm like this is a Sunday . I'm supposed to have a client at the gym at six 30 in the morning on Monday and I'm finally going to sleep at three 50 . So now I had to set an alarm for like five o'clock in the morning to make sure I'm letting my clients know that , yeah , I'm not coming in . There's no freaking way , and it just so happens that I have amazing colleagues that I was able to connect with at five am to take over my five , six appointments that I had that day and I had this . I think I actually had to move a couple , but anyways , that doesn't matter . So Monday rolls around , I feel like I'm a little better . I'm a little better , but not 100% better . So now starts the just crazy , incredible mindset that my wife has and that I really try to focus on doing when I'm sick . So , first thing , I'm going to start with the diabetes . The diabetes . I'm going to start with diabetes Every time I'm sick , and this is something that you absolutely should be asking your doctor , because they can give you some direction on what you're doing , the direction on how much or how little to do it is .
Speaker 1You need to change your basils , as your basils probably need to come up Every single time I'm sick . I run high or not run high , but my blood sugars start to go high and just become sticky . And I overcome that by increasing my basals by 10 , 15% . And I usually start with 10 because sometimes you know , obviously viruses are different than bacteria and different . You got different sicknesses , you got different durations of sicknesses . But I always start with 10% and I actively watch my CGM for the next 24 hours because I'm probably gonna have to make more adjustments to the basal . If the basal's not really working , then I'm going to add another five to 10% and then sit on it see where it goes .
Speaker 1And the reason I bring this up is because I used to not do that . I used to say , oh , I'm on . At the time I was on tandem , on the tandem pump , and I was on the closed loop with Dexcom and I was like I'll do its thing . No , it can't do its thing fast enough . At least I felt like it didn't . It couldn't keep me stable enough where I wanted to be fast enough . It couldn't learn fast enough . So I think that's an important piece that I want you guys to really think about .
Speaker 1When you are sick whether it's you got a 24 hour bug or whether it's you have COVID , I don't care what it is Change your basals . And if you don't feel comfortable doing that , you need to send a message to your doctor right now and tell them and ask them I've got these symptoms , it's been going on for this long . I want to change my basals . Should I go up 10% , 15% , 20% , whatever it is , how much should I increase my basals , for and for how long ? And you should get an answer and hopefully they don't give you an answer of oh , just leave them where they're at , because if you have your medical team tell you that , then you might be . You need to be questioning your medical team . So that was the first thing your basals .
Speaker 1The next thing I did is I took I like , personally I like taking warm baths or maybe a warm shower Something that's going to suppress your nervous system , because when we're sick , that nervous system is like hypersensitive , it's all over the place . So we need a way to make sure that we're trying to suppress that . Whatever that is for you , that might be a walk , which I did . I took a bunch of different walks that really helped , and walking obviously is going to help Our blood sugars as well . I personally love to start with warm baths because it's soothing to me If I have Epsom salts . I don't always like to use Epsom salts , but I will If I like to use Epsom salts . If I want , if I'm feeling frosty , I might light a candle , whatever it is Anything that's going to get your system to relax , relax , all right . So I did that multiple , multiple times , probably two , maybe three times a day while I was sick .
Speaker 1Like I said , I went on four walks . It's nice outside , so it was really painful to stand up and walk . The first 24 hours of really bad symptoms . Walk around the house , but getting out in the natural sunlight , being able to just kind of walk up and down the street , was very soothing to me , and usually I don't do that . So it's really cool when you find new things that work for whatever situation that you're in . So walking , obviously you need to get as much sleep as possible Right tick naps , whatever it is .
Speaker 1In the case of the GI bug , that was like almost near impossible , and if you've ever had a GI bug you probably know what I'm talking about . Just almost impossible , discomfort , not being able to get comfortable in any position . One position's more uncomfortable than the next . You try laying down , you try going on your side . Going on your stomach is definitely not an option , and if you're a stomach sleeper , I'm sorry , I'm a back sleeper , so it's okay I guess . But different positions don't work right . Maybe , if maybe you like , maybe you're able to sleep upright , that might work . Um , I think I tried to sleep in the rocking chair but that didn't work . So I didn't get much sleep and I know by day two I , my body , was just physically exhausted from the vomiting , from Just the constant throbbing of muscles because of vomiting this . So , just so , I was just so tired , obviously because I didn't sleep . So make trying to make sure you're getting sleep is as much as possible .
Speaker 1I am not someone that believes in medication for sleeping because it's just , it's I'm just . I just don't really believe in it and and and that is me saying that with also the With , also stating that I've never even really used medication for sleeping . So if you're someone that is , you know , has insomnia or you know , you just have a really hard time sleeping in general , I'm really sorry if you have a GI bug or if you're really sick and you can't go to sleep and at the end of the day , you do what you have to do to take to get sleep . That's all I got to say . Some people use CDB , cbd oil . I'm not going to tell you to do that obvious for obvious reasons . But there are alternatives out there to medications To help you sleep . For sure , we already talked about increasing your basals .
Speaker 1Another thing for me that helps is is trying to interact or do things or think about things . That's going to take my mind off of the pain I'm going through and there was a lot of discomfort and pain For me . It's my kids . It's my kids . It's trying to have conversations with my wife . We have really cool , in-depth conversations about life , about our relationship , about our kids , about things that are going on in our life , about , you know , future plans that we want to do , things that we want to do . When we have really good conversations like that , that it takes my mind off of everything . When I am able to interact and talk and Be with my kids , it takes my mind off everything . So that is one thing for me that I I use a lot when I'm sick , if I can . I can because it just it really helps me .
Speaker 1And then one of the other things before I get to some of the alternative supplementation and stuff that I use when I'm sick is I tried to give myself as much positive reinforcement and positive affirmations as possible . I'm not a big Talk to myself , give myself amazing props You're incredible , I'm not . I'm not really that type of person . I've never been that type of person I Am . It's very interesting to talk about that because that's something that is In the back of my head , that when I do do it , it's like one of those things that , like you know you should do something but you don't ever do it because it's not part of your normal routine . You don't do it because you're just like , yeah , whatever , I don't really want to do that and you talk yourself out of doing it . But something like giving yourself a positive reinforcement , positive affirmation , if you do it so many times and you get Better at doing it , and then you start , and then not just just the act of doing it , but then also believing In what you are saying . It's so powerful , it is so powerful . And those times that I do those things like give myself a positive , positive affirmation , those times that I do those things and it hits , I Feel incredible and I'd say I say to myself why in the same heck do I not do this all the time . I'm sure you tell yourself that sometimes , too , I know I do . All right . So those are the basic things that I do , outside of taking different supplements that I'm gonna go into in a second that Help me Deal with a sickness , no matter what it is . I did every single , if one of the things that I just mentioned I did when I had really bad COVID in 2020 . So the these things , these things , work . Okay .
Now Supplementations . Let's go into Supplementations and why I do this . So the first thing that I do I actually didn't do it for the GI bug Any of these three , because I'm out of all three of them . Vitamin C For obvious reasons it's gonna boost your immune system . Vitamin D , because it helps to a Um absorb minerals and stuff like that . I didn't take vitamin D . I actually don't even think I have anymore , but in this scenario , when I'm not even really eating anything vitamin D there's other great at benefits to vitamin D as well , without just the absorbing of nutrients and minerals . But I Didn't take vitamin D predominantly because I Wasn't really eating anything . And then the other thing I sometimes take two when I'm sick is zinc . So Now here's the controversial part .
Speaker 1If you heard me talk at the beginning of this , I said there was going to be a controversial part Essential oils . Essential oils are something that are becoming very popular in our society and I'm going to say this Essential oils are not a replacement for specific medications that we need to either survive or deal with a very life-threatening health condition , right ? So , as an example , if there was a , there are , but if I was going to take a essential oil that helped my blood sugar , well , shoot , lemon . I could take an essential oil lemon that has lemon in it . That's basically lemon that's going to help my blood sugar . Okay , I wouldn't take that and not take insulin , okay . So me saying that essential oils is what I treat sicknesses with and I don't use medications , that doesn't mean that I'm saying that you should only take essential oils . So I just want to make that sure that disclaimer was in here .
Speaker 1So the first thing every single time I'm sick , I'm taking peppermint oil and I do two different things with peppermint oil . I take peppermint oil as a muscle relaxer and I do peppermint . And I said take , but I use peppermint oil , not take peppermint oil . I use peppermint oil for a muscle relaxer and I also use it as an anti-inflammatory . So in the case of the GI bug I used peppermint oil and put it all over my stomach . It cools your stomach . So if you have a fever it will help with your fever . It will also relieve some of your pain relief because it's an anti-inflammatory and a pain reliever . So I love peppermint oil .
Speaker 1The other thing that I'll do , especially in the case with the sinus infection or if I am having a bad sinus infection or I can't breathe for whatever reason when I'm sick is I'll use our diffuser and I'll put peppermint oil in the diffuser . And also what I'll do is I'll sniff peppermint oil , right . So I just open the peppermint oil bottle , take a couple sniffs like this , and that helps a lot . Just clear up the nasal passages and I don't have to take vapes . You know , whatever rub , I don't have to take . You know , day quill , I don't have to take night quill , because peppermint oil is going to help right now and it's going to . It's just it's such a healthier way to treat my symptoms and that's that's what I'm in this for . And again , I'm not telling you not to take that stuff because I'm not a doctor . I'm just telling you this is what I do . That really helps me . That I love because it's such a natural way to treat my symptoms . So , peppermint oil .
Speaker 1The other thing that we started doing is my wife became an ambassador for a company called Earthly and I'll leave the company's name in the show notes because it's an incredible company and they have a lot of really cool essential oil supplements . I'm getting ready to take their multivitamin and they have an essential oil that Kelly just happened to have Called Feel Better , and it literally makes you feel better , like I . I it's . It's not going to give you immediate , it doesn't . It didn't give me an immediate relief , but it a hundred percent started working within the first hour to two hours , like I started feeling symptoms subsiding and you can I think you can take it every four hours . Don't quote me on that , but I'm pretty sure you can take it every three to four hours . You take it's , just it's in a liquid form and you just , you know , take it with whatever it comes with . Anyways , but yeah , it's called Feel Better . I took that for basically off and on for three days and that really helped my symptoms . There's another Earthly supplement that we take . It's called I forget what it actually is , but it's like a multivitamin almost that when I take that at the beginning of the day , I feel incredible for the first , you know , two , three hours of the day , like it really helps wake my body up and get me going for the day .
Speaker 1So those are the two controversial things that I really did in terms of medications , and you can't really say they're medications Because they're not . But I personally don't like to take these medications that are out right now because of all the other stuff that's in them . That's it , that's just that's it . Some of them mess with your liver depending on how much you take , right ? I can't believe that . You know we're not going to be able to take medications , right ? I can't believe that . You know we're still having our females take , you know , extra strength , tylenol and all that stuff for for menstrual cycles . I totally understand it . We probably I don't know Maybe we will let our kids do it too . But I really wish there was an alternative . I don't 100% know if there is an essential oil alternative I doubt there is that's going to take the relief away , like Tylenol or extra strength , motrin or whatever it is for those specific symptoms . But I just personally don't like to take those medications .
Speaker 1The other thing that I want to add to this story and I'm almost done here I hope this has all been valuable and given you guys some other ideas to do , of things to do when you're sick , adding on to what you currently do . But the other thing I want to say with this GI thing is I didn't realize how inflamed I was until afterwards Because I basically didn't really wasn't able to eat anything for almost almost 48 hours and it could have probably been closer to 50 or 60 hours Because I really didn't eat anything until so . My symptoms started pretty much Monday or Sunday night . I didn't really start eating anything until Tuesday evening when I started feeling a little bit of relief from the vomiting . Finally and the reason I bring that up is because I was reminded how important it is to understand body awareness and body signals From either sickness , from fatigue , from how you're feeling . I was reminded of this after my symptoms dissipated on Wednesday , and when my symptoms dissipated I had only lost like three and a half four pounds and that might be somewhat significant , but it also probably is a lot of water weight . But I could see it in my face , I could feel it in my body that I just I felt so much better and how much that virus kicked my butt . I'm also somewhat glad it did because it was able to cleanse my gut and my system .
So , if you remember , a while back I did an episode with my good dietitian friend , kelly Schmidt , and when we talked about her food sensitivity test and me going through that process and things like spinach and avocado and kale things that I love to eat all the time were showing up on moderate levels on this food sensitivity test and I was really good for about I don't know three , four , five months like super religious , about sticking to the plan that we came to when we talked about that food sensitivity test . And after you know , it's funny that when you change your mindset on how you want to live your life , you change your mindset on things when bad things happen to you . So now I'm in the back of my head and I made a decision that I'm going to go back to eating no wheat , hardly very much dairy , and if it's dairy , if it is going to be fine , I'm going to eat dairy . It needs to be really , really good quality dairy . So I'm eating no wheat , no gluten , making sure that I am not eating too much beef , no processed food , no added sugars . Just by doing those things , I'm going to replenish my microbiome and I'm going to replenish my gut health Because , at the end of the day , when we think about sickness whether it's a long duration of a sickness or a short duration of a sickness it is all brought to you .
Speaker 1Brought on to you not just because of a virus , because you can't do anything about the virus , so you're going to catch the virus . You're going to catch the virus Really , if you have a lot of symptoms , it's based off of how much viral load you get of that virus . Whatever we know , we all know that . But when we think about our system and our immune system one of the biggest problems in America and I'm just going to talk about America because I don't know how the other half of the world lives when we talk about our food system and how it affects our metabolism , it is crazy . It's crazy to think about what is actually in our food .
Speaker 1I know I haven't been paying attention . I haven't been paying enough attention to this . Over the last six months I've been paying way more attention to it . So I really encourage you guys to look at the quality of the food that you're eating . I really encourage you guys to look at your overall gut health , because it's going to one not just help your diabetes , but to help your overall health and allow you to live a lot longer . And here's the last thing , because this is a diabetes show and I'm going to end with this diabetes comment . We all know that the healthier we are , the better stable blood sugars that we have , regardless of what we eat . So if my system is amazing and it's working on all cylinders , I'm in homeostasis , I'm good to go , I can come up against the virus , I can come up against the bacteria and I can kick its butt . But if I'm not , then it's going to kick my butt and it's going to rack havoc on my blood sugars .
Speaker 1The day after , all my symptoms stopped . Right the day after I felt great . I went back to the gym . I haven't had that good of blood sugars in a long time and I'll tell you this , I ate a lot of food that day because I was dehydrated still , I was lethargic or I wasn't lethargic still , but I was still very . I didn't have a great appetite , but I made myself eat very small amounts of food over the whole entire day to try to replenish and get my system going back in the way I wanted to go , and even I think I ate as many carbohydrates as I typically do every single day . I still took or no , I didn't still take , but I ate just about as much carbohydrates I do every single day . And I think my normal insulin intake , from basal and bolus , my total daily insulin every single day is between 35-ish to maybe 40 on a high day . The day after all symptoms stopped and there was no more digestive distress , my system was basically cleansed of the virus , of the inflammation . All of that because that's the whole process , right , a GI bug happens and your system gets rid of the bug and then it has to basically expel all the bull crap that's in your system . That's the process that happens and my system is cleansed . I only took 22 units that entire day , that entire day .
Speaker 1So being more health in a more healthy I don't want to say manner , but being healthier in whatever way that is for you , is important , and we all have different definitions of what good health is . Every doctor has a different definition of what good health is . Some doctors are saying that a good A1C is 7.0 . I say that's BS . That's just me . If you're new and your previous A1C was 10 and you're at 7 , that's freaking amazing . That's freaking amazing . But that shouldn't be the stopgap . That shouldn't be like , okay , I can wash my hands , I can go in autopilot mode . No , there's still more to learn . There's always still more to learn .
Speaker 1What I always think about with A1C I know this is a small tangent , but I think it's important what I always think about with A1C what's the best you can do ? What is the best you can do ? My last A1C was 6.1 . I can do better . I know I can . I know I can . I did 6.1 without even trying .
Speaker 1Imagine if I clean up my eating habits a little bit more . I believe it starts there . That's where it really starts . Clean up my eating habits a little bit more , get a little bit more exercise in , dedicate myself to a little bit more mental fortitude , I guarantee I can get lower , guaranteed , 100% . So what is the A1C that you want ? Not what your doctor wants , not what your parents want , not what your friends want , Not what your sibling wants . What is the A1C that you want ? That's all that matters when we talk about A1C , because A1C isn't the end , all be all . We all know that . But when we talk about A1C , that's what matters . What A1C do you want ? So I hope all of this has been valuable .
Speaker 1I talked way longer than I really wanted to . It always happens . My God , how do I do this ? How do I do this to you guys ? I hope you guys are listening to all of these episodes and the whole entire thing .
