Water Gilding Artist Celebrates Women's Strength, Resilience, and Power with 24k Gold, with Shirley Yang Crutchfield
To look at Shirley Yang Crutchfield's gilded, 24k gold-leaf art portraits of women means you notice the details, the nuance, the shine, and the artistry. What you may not know is that up until a few years ago, she was in the tech world, not the art world.
After convincing master water gilders to teach her the ways of their art only 2 years ago, she has already been recognized for exceptional craftsmanship and resonance, including joining Art Basel Miami in 2025.
Shirley's work draws on art history, fashion, contemporary heroines, and her own entrepreneurial journey. Shirley uses a 14th-century Italian water gilding technique, doratura a guazzo. Her art celebrates the strength and resilience behind success, inviting viewers to appreciate the stories that lie beneath the surface.
Before becoming a professional artist, Shirley had a long career in tech where she worked in tech at Fox, Sony, Amazon, NBC. Later, she went on to found her own company.
