My God! Okay, it's happening. What's the procedure, bro? What's the procedure?
SPEAKER_07Say my name.
SPEAKER_08TV is awesome. You're goddamn right.
SPEAKER_03Hi, T V heads. Welcome back to TV is Awesome, your favorite podcast about all things TV. I am Lisa and I'm here with my co-host Ken. Hi, Ken.
SPEAKER_04Hi, Lisa.
SPEAKER_03And we're here with BattleGast, my second head. That's a visual joke on a podcast. So funny. Um, Paul Twinplay.
SPEAKER_06Hello, TV heads. This is number two for me. Glad to be back.
SPEAKER_03Um, and today we have a special bonus, bonus, bonus episode. Uh, we are gonna be talking about Widows Bay. And it's exciting. And it's a bonus one-off. We're gonna talk about the whole season in one shot when there's lots to talk about. But before we get to that, uh, some important business we have to take care of. And I will start with our guests. What are you drinking to take us through this discussion, Paul?
SPEAKER_06A pint of Guinness.
SPEAKER_03Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_06Really a can poured into a glass. But yeah.
SPEAKER_03Did you split the G?
SPEAKER_06No, there's no G on my glass.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Lovely. Uh, Ken, what are you drinking today? If you said Guinness, I'm gonna freak out.
SPEAKER_04No, I wish.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04I wish. That would be amazing. It would be Widows Bay worthy, I think. Uh but I did also go beer. Oh, I've been drinking a uh it's a Jack's Abbey uh blood orange blood orange wheat. Ooh. Ooh. And Jack's Abbey is uh Massachusetts, um Massachusetts local.
SPEAKER_03So that's right.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, and I have a schmancy drink. But you know, it's just like a normal Lisa one. It is the very last grips of my hair vodka with a little lemon cello and some lemon lime spritz for bubbles.
SPEAKER_04Nice and a sparkly straw.
SPEAKER_03And a swan straw.
SPEAKER_04Sparkly swan straw. Lovely.
SPEAKER_03That's right. Um, okay. Cheers, everyone. Straight at. Cheers. Cheers. Yay! Mest of the cheers after all this time.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Our but our social media person was working overtime by posting our our our more difficult tries at Cheersings.
SPEAKER_03It took a whole 15 seconds to get all those cheers out of the way.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. So to start, I have a lot of notes, but to start the conversation, I feel like maybe I just ask a big overall question, which is like, do you all have any like overarching issues or topics or things you want to say about the whole season in general?
SPEAKER_06Uh uh no issues. I mean, I have very enjoyable season. Clearly, like the from my perspective, the horror community has definitely taken the show into its warm bosom. I just wanted to say that. Uh no, people, everyone seems to love it. I haven't seen any real naysayers. It's kind of funny that uh, you know, even like I think I saw today, there was an interview with Matthew Reason, the New Yorker, you know, about the show it down. So yeah, it's just kind of funny to see how somehow, I shouldn't say somehow, because obviously it's a very good show. It's something that has managed to cross the genre boundaries.
SPEAKER_03And anything to add or to track?
SPEAKER_04Uh well, I will I will uh agree that I thought it was a very enjoyable show. Uh that I mean I loved it. I just thought it was very fun to watch, and I loved the humor, and I loved the horror. And I uh think it does seem to be, I mean, it's so hard now to tell like who is really watching and how many people are watching and how big of a hit something is. Uh and you know, like a show on Apple doesn't have to be a huge show to be a hit for Apple because of, you know, Apple has a smaller subscriber base than other um than other platforms, but um it must be doing well for them because it um already been renewed for season two. And just anecdotally, everyone I know is watching the show, whether you like car or not, people who typically don't like car are watching the show and enjoying it, which I think is interesting.
SPEAKER_03I will say that I think it's a slow, it was a slow start, slow burn. Yeah. Because I had not even heard of it until I think maybe episode two or three was out. And I was like, hey, I think we should like I just got one TikTok and I was like, oh, I haven't even heard of this. And then uh, because we didn't even start watching it till like three was out, right? Something like that. So um, so so I hadn't even heard of it until three was out, and then from there could tell that it was picking up speed, and I was jealous of the people who were like binging, you know what I mean? Because we had to after we caught up on those three, we had to like wait a week, wait a week. Um did you wait, did you binge or were you watching week to week?
SPEAKER_04No, I did. So I was behind you guys, so I pretty much binged it in a week.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's which is very fun.
SPEAKER_04It's a very fun way to watch it too.
SPEAKER_03And I bet you were able to connect more dots than like I was. I mean, obviously, episode to episode, dots are connected, but there are some things, and like I have it in my notes that like it moved from episode to episode over a week, you'd be halfway through the next episode and go, wait a second, what happened to all the people that just walked in the lake? And then like they'd be like, Oh, they want to press charges, and like if they would mention it, yeah, but there were so many things that popped up like later on that I was like, it's not the continuity for me wasn't there, but I bet well, I don't know if it was better or worse, binging, but you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think it helped because I do think there were things that uh questions that I had that I felt were answered pretty quickly. But I do wish for a couple reasons that I could have gone back and re-watched the early episodes because not only for following the story and seeing like how things developed, but there was so there's so much going on in the background, so many little jokes or little clues or little Easter eggs happening that I I know I missed tons of stuff.
SPEAKER_03Right. Well, Paul, you were able to like sort of re-watch.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Well, I kind of like the wait a week. I mean, I I forget things like I do for all TV. But uh, so Emma was came home from school and she's like, Oh, I was telling you you gotta watch the show. And at the time I couldn't get our stupid Apple TV working, you know, connection thing. So I was watching, you know, throwing my phone to the TV. And that's that means that's means nothing to nobody. But uh, so it meant that uh to rewatch to for Emma to watch it, she needed my phone, so I just ended up watching, you know, the first handful of episodes. I think but when I started the rewatch, we had already been through the two sort of historical episodes. Uh Warren, what the hell is his first name? Played by Hamish. Richard Richard Warren.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_06So it was kind of fun to watch the first two episodes again, because in the second episode they're in the weird museum, and you see like Richard Warren's statue, and you see actually like uh almost like a mannequin wax thing of the wife there, and like you can see some references to the to uh the future episodes that were kind of fun. Um yeah, so definitely you know a rewatchable show for for that part of it, and especially since like the episodes aren't an hour long, you know. Yeah, I think that makes it a little bit easier to rewatch too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, is that also when you figured out about the hand?
SPEAKER_06The hand? I figured something out about the hand.
SPEAKER_04I don't know. You were so clever that you forgot about it.
SPEAKER_03The drawing of the hand.
SPEAKER_06Oh, right, right, right, right. I'm sorry, yeah. I totally forgot about that. Like, I just happened to see people talking about it. I do want to go back when I say like horror people going nuts, like you know, I follow a bunch of artists, and they're already some that I very like are already putting out like Widow's Bay themes, things, like yeah, really cool art for it. Um, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I mean I guess the short version was, you know, in the I forget which episode it is, where the shaman says, you know, this drawing shows it all, and it looks like a turkey traced hand.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_06Someone online had said, Hey, take the take the radar of the island. If you turn it on its side, it's that hand. Um which I I mean, I don't know if that's a super important detail, but it's just kind of fun. But it also shows like the the how much detail they're paying attention to, which I always appreciate.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's feeling a little lost like that way, where people are like dissecting things and making connections and like something like that. I would not have ever known. I thought you got that on the rewatch, but now I know you're getting it online, but like where things are popping up. And um speaking of lost, let's talk a little bit about like all of the references and inspirations and everything. And like the list is long, yeah. But at the very end, I felt like it was very lost like with him finding the films in the bunker, yeah, and being like, This is what we use this bunker for, yeah. Which was unexpected because that's not necessarily horror, but I mean, kind of right, right, and the hatch, like there's a hatch the hatch.
SPEAKER_04Um right, yeah. Um, there's so much. I mean, the films, the the the old films were such a lost thing. That kind of made me feel like warm and happy all over.
SPEAKER_03Right. I mean, I guess you could say the island, the island itself, an island that you can't get off of.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and they talk about the I just made that and they talk about the island as a as a as a thing with uh with feelings and hunger. And I feel like that was such a lost thing, too. Like the lot like the the island is a character.
SPEAKER_03You're right.
SPEAKER_06Look at us being smart, better and better than that freaking show.
SPEAKER_03He said it. I mean, um, as far as other I mean, everything Stephen King, pretty much. Yeah, just the whole vibe.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and then uh I read read some read somewhere that they purposefully designed the font of the of the show of the the series of the TV show name to look like classic Stephen King book font. And it does, it does, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And then of course there's Carrie references, shining references, but also directly the book is there.
SPEAKER_04Yep, yep. And I think Patricia, the actress of the place, Patricia, looks a lot like Shelly Duval and The Shining. So then I read somewhere of the I read an interview somewhere with a costume designer, and she purposefully made Patricia's costumes to look like Shelly Duval, or at least like yeah, get get the essence of Shelly Duval in The Shining, which I thought was interesting.
SPEAKER_03And it's interesting because I say, like, oh, the shining, I mean, all of that, plus like the book actually being in that bookmobile. Um and but then somebody I saw said, which she's like furiously writing over and over and over again, like because she's like cap possessed by the book or whatever, that that's very like the shining coated because he's like writing, writing, writing all over the colour. Oh, yeah, true.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. I mean, for very appropriate.
SPEAKER_03I don't know if anybody was gonna say it.
SPEAKER_04I said it before you got before we started.
SPEAKER_03Oh, um, because Paul is also very the shining coated today. We got another visual thing on a podcast, right?
SPEAKER_04Oh, I guess we should describe it, yes. I mean, might it might end up on our social media, but Paul's shirt looks like the rug in the in the overlook hotel in the shy in Shi the Shining movie, yes, where Danny is riding on his um three-wheeled tricycle? Tricycle, whatever you call it.
SPEAKER_03Big wheel?
SPEAKER_04Big wheel, it was a big wheel, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER_06A movie that Steven famously does not like. Yeah, it's one of his least favorite adaptations.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that one, yeah.
SPEAKER_06He hates the shining.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, ah, that's too bad.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um you can kind of see it from his perspective because it really is. I mean, the characters are so different in the book. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06You know, the shining definitely reads is very personal too. And so, like, I think he was very beholden to the the father character in the book compared to you know, Jack Nicholson in the movie, etc. Um, I do want to say before I forget, some you know, one of the other things that was never a book by King, but the last episode definitely is referencing it. But I mean, the idea of having to sacrifice for everybody else is a story as old as horror. You know, you can go back to the lottery with with Shirley Jackson, obviously. But yeah, uh, you know, they're very much referencing Storm of the Century. Um, the Stephen King miniseries, which I highly, highly recommend. Um, it was never a book, like he he wrote it as a miniseries. And they they pr they eventually published the the screenplays as a as a book. Um but you know, it's an island off the coast of Maine, and you know, the stranger comes with a storm and you know basically proposes that they have to you know let him take one of the children or something, um in order for the island to survive, kind of thing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that is a great oh, sorry, go ahead. Well, I was just gonna say that's a great um there's so yeah, it's such a great pickup because there is so much from that, and I didn't make that connection at all.
SPEAKER_03And didn't he do the mist or the fog or something like that?
SPEAKER_04Oh, the mist is his, yeah, which is kind of I mean, I know it's fog on the island, but it's like but there is like a lot of John Carpenter too, because the there is the fog um references and Halloween, obviously. Um yes, um, yeah, with the whole yeah, with the uh the boogeyman.
SPEAKER_03Yes, and a lot of slasher, just like running from yeah, a dumb slow monster, but somehow you're still tripping, right?
SPEAKER_04Um, it's a like clever takes on the slasher. I felt like it was clever, a clever version of it.
SPEAKER_06As someone who doesn't love slashers, I I still really enjoy them.
SPEAKER_03Parts are word is like, okay, they're doing this actually for comedic value now because like this is so dumb. Yeah, but then also the other big influence is Dobbs.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, oh yeah, of course.
SPEAKER_03I mean, like right from the go. Right from down to like the town meeting with like Wick coming in, being like, Hey, you're not gonna catch the shark that way.
SPEAKER_04That's not what he says, but basically, right, and Tom's whole like swim, you know, first swim of the season, and he swims out to the to the buoy, yes, it's just like at the beginning of Jaws. And yeah, there's a little like the chalk the shark drawn on the chalkboard in the yeah in his in his office. So that was clever.
SPEAKER_03I mean, and how like really clever and brilliant that like they're these in inspirations are so like face value, they're just so blatant. But the way they're all coming together, like puzzle pieces, is really interesting. And the fact that it's a comedy, yeah, is so interesting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and some of it is really funny, and it doesn't feel like it's ripping any of them off, it feels like they're riffs on it, which is which is fun, and like homages, right? Like homages, yep, exactly.
SPEAKER_03It's not yeah, it's not it's not being um mean about it or anything like that, yeah.
SPEAKER_06And I like that they're not being self-aware about it. Not I'm like, oh, this is like Jaws, or oh, this is you know, we're you know, this is obviously in some sort of universe where these people are unaware of Stephen King and you know these movies. I know, which actually which makes it more fun, you know, when you can do it smartly and build the characters that they're building.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. What a sad universe with no Stephen King. Right.
SPEAKER_03I know we're well, I guess that's true.
SPEAKER_06The shining is there, but that's true. That's the only time they've done that's true.
SPEAKER_04Uh the big movie. Maybe it's just a just a universe without jaws, which is also sad.
SPEAKER_06Right.
SPEAKER_03To the point where um when I was studying for this today, in one of the the meetings in the town hall, like just the employees are having, somebody had drawn like a little shark on the chalk chalkboard, like that looks like a like kind of a sillier version of like what is in the chalkboard in Jaws, like they put them next to each other. I'm trying to remember that scene, but yeah, like very like respectful, yeah. Like because it's this show and it's a little comedy, it's like not well drawn.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um, so I have a question for you, Lisa. So, as someone who doesn't love horror, since did you was there uh what was it that made you like this show? And was there anything that you actually found scarier or too scary?
SPEAKER_03Oh, great question. And I will say I was in from the beginning, was in from just even hearing about it. Um, it wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be, but because they said it was a comedy, I was like, okay, I could be into this. And then I will say the first few episodes was more comedy to me than horror, and I wasn't like scared. I will tell you the moment the and it's probably universal actually, is in The Sunset Clark Pills. When I mean, I think that is my favorite episode. And by the time you got because even up to there, I was like, oh, is he like pretending to be like like Tom, the main character? I thought was just a little overboard with his like wide-eyedness and like believe, don't believe, like all this stuff. But I was like, this is fine, this is building the world, which I love. They put me in it. Yep, I was in it, and then the Sunset Cruise one happens and it's different than anything we had seen before. And you're just going along, going along, and all of a sudden it's a blip. It is this when you all of a sudden see what's actually happening, it's the first time you see that everybody just has their mouths open. Yeah, I even talk right now. I'm getting chills up and down. And how did the show do this to me? Because I was like, I'm enjoying this, this is light, and this is like, oh, it's scary, and like, yeah, sure, things are haunted and bad things are happening. But that was a like like nails down my back kind of moment, and I was there for it. But I don't know how to explain how it's the horror for me, yeah. Maybe because it's a comedy, yeah. Um never at no point was I like this is too scary for me. So it's the horror for me. I guess I don't know how to explain what I like and I don't like, yeah, other than they put me in the world and I believed it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we love a little we love a world where they put us in it and it's follow the rules, all the rules consist follows the rules consistent.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um I mean, how about you?
SPEAKER_06Were you like I remember you being a little afraid when uh we'll have to swing into the crawl space?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, I didn't like it. I actually blocked it. I was a little scared about it. That was scary.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, watching it by myself, like ugh.
SPEAKER_03But it was almost like you knew something like that was gonna happen. You didn't know it was gonna be a clown on all fours, but yeah, you're screaming like don't go in the crawl space.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03Jesus.
SPEAKER_06Right. Um but I like that they gave him a reason to go in there. But he had to go. You know, just not to be stupid, like he had to check off the list, it's approved everybody. Yeah. Um, like that was a fun way to put him in the different uh situations, realistically. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's a great example of the episode where things are very funny. I mean, every episode has that balance, but like funny in a really weird, morbid way. But like when he's looking at the games that are in the cabinet, Brennan Stimpy inspiration, perhaps, right? The cabinet. Um and it's like Daddy's home is the game, and then there's just one that's called Teeth or something, and he opens it and it's teeth.
SPEAKER_06Well, it's just like uh it's a plier.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's that that's what it is.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's funny.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, they do a good job with the balance. I actually totally forgot about that. But that happened before sunset cocktails.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah. I have to say, I thought I was enjoying it, but I also feel like for me it really clicked with the um cocktails, sunset cocktails with Patricia episode. Like that's where I was like, oh, okay, now I'm really in it.
SPEAKER_03Yes. The storytelling in that one episode is superior. Like yeah, it just the way you'd already kind of built it, like the way where it's placed in the series, and it is feels kind of one off, but you've already kind of like you get to know like what Patricia's all about, and she has a history and she's not well liked, and like you you get a sense of the world by the time that happens, so it's like very well placed, yeah, because you're in the world already. And I mean, I didn't have I have an inkling, I mean, we all have an inkling that like something was up, that she was like possessed with this, but you but it's relatable too. You're like, I have to have the perfect party, like it is just a little relatable, yeah. And then at the end, when you find out what she's really doing and what's really on her head, the clues are all there. Like, even when everybody's like, What's on your head? Rosemary was like, I had my qualms. Hilarious, hilarious.
SPEAKER_06I know now I'm wondering for the first time, and I've seen that episode twice. You're talking about when you first see the flash of the people with their open mouths. Do you see is uh is Patricia in the shot? Like to come to see her headdress?
SPEAKER_03My memory is that you just see the crowd first.
SPEAKER_06I think to what I remember is the first the first I never notice it. I don't know if it's there, like hiding in plain sight or not, you know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I feel like you don't see anything until until um Bashir comes in and says, Patricia, what are you doing? And then it cuts to her wearing the headdress, and you see like spread out the little the cut-up birds and animals and whatever they are, and then it cuts to like people with like you know, bloody drink and their eye, yeah, their mouths open, and uh so there was bird blood in the punch, I think so.
SPEAKER_03Amongst other things, amongst other things, yeah. That was very well done. Um, but no, I my memory is just you see the quickest flash of just particularly Dale, yeah, and then some other of the people, yeah. Everything she's saying and seeing, it's just the quickest blip, and it's like it's like a gasp. That was really, really well done.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, um a little bit of Wickerman there, like I feel like this Wickerman, and then the bonfire is kind of Wickerman, lot of football. Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But then you see that they were making stick figures like on the table. Yeah, I don't well, I don't know if they were making them or if those were the party favors. Like, I don't yeah, but that was kind of like Blair Witchy, too.
SPEAKER_04Like, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, um, aside, but do you know that um Apple Music actually like created, or I don't know if it was the creators of the show issued an Apple Music's playlist for Sunset Cocktails? No, I don't know if you have Apple Music, I'll share it with you, but it's actually a very fun playlist. It's got like 60 songs on it.
SPEAKER_04The music was fun before everything went bad.
SPEAKER_03That's right, that's right. So here's like an aside, just because I know Dale was a big not a big part, but I say playlist, but he was the DJ, and you remember he's like she hands him a list, and he's like 50 songs or whatever he says, but anyway, playlist was on Apple Music. Um okay. When I saw first of all, in the first episodes, you're like, oh my god, every character who comes on, you're like, I know them, I know them, I know them, they've been in amazing uh all these things, but him in particular, I just expected that he would have a more prominent role because of who he is. Like he just won an Emmy.
SPEAKER_04I agree, I don't think they used him enough. I was surprised. I ex kept expecting him to get an episode or something later on, and it just never really happened.
SPEAKER_03I really thought he was gonna have a dedicated episode like Patricia had one, and you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Hopefully, season season two, he gets to he gets to do more.
SPEAKER_03I feel like they must be building towards that, right? I mean he just told a room full of um captive, hungry rats to run.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03Um the other thing I just want to say is that I feel like I clocked that spoiler alert, everybody. I didn't say spoilers at the beginning, but I mean this whole thing is a spoiler. I clocked, I feel like I clocked that Evan was going to be the descendant, yeah, like pretty early on. Yeah, and then I got gaslit. Somehow it threw me totally off when Ruth was identified, yeah, right? Same, so clever. They probably were like, Oh, everybody's gonna guess that it's him, right? Right, and then they went this way back around.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it was so yeah, I thought it was super well done.
SPEAKER_03That actress is 90 years old. I just read that, and she's like boop, boop, boop up some stairs. Like I just did two miles on the treadmill. That was a stunt. Perfect casting, but either way, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Ruth was great. She had to do all that stuff, stunt double going up the stairs. Well, I mean, just because like when they I just noticed a cut, like you couldn't see her head, it was just the body going up the stairs.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that is true, but still, sorry. I mean, everything she was doing on that episode.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, that was great. That was actually one of my favorite moments was that whole the whole scene with her and Loftus building up, you know, because it just it was was so tense and it felt surreal, and yeah, like you you know, actually cared, you know, you care for both characters, or at least care enough to know what to know what's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and you wonder, will he go through it? Should he go through it? Right, uh yeah, it was yeah, very well done.
SPEAKER_03Very well done both episodes, right? Because it's like the one right before that. Um they're having they're finding it out, and Patricia is like, what does it matter? And like when you find out who it is, oh my god. Yeah, she's like, She bakes you cakes, she takes care of Evan.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Um, also preceded by one of the funniest scenes on the show, the I think so too. The um dead baby, dead baby, dead baby, lesbian, dead baby. Oh, the genealogy, oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Genealogy, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, that was torture though. That is also a very funny um like setup, yeah. Because they're like, we just need to know fast, and she's like, Nope, you're gonna sit here on my projector, go through the whole lineage.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, actually, it's funnier after while you're watching it. I was also with them saying, Yeah, tell us, tell us.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Oh well, I just really appreciated that Loftus in the in the last episodes, like, just for a moment speaks, like, and we're basing all this on freaking rosemary's genealogy, like even though like he's still like you know, in anguish, but it's like that's a moment of somewhat clarity. He's like, wait a minute.
SPEAKER_03And it's interesting, Emma had a bit like she was very vocal in these episodes about being like, just tell her, right? Just tell her. So, like, while it's happening, we were talking about like, well, maybe she knows, yeah, maybe she knows because sometimes the way she was talking, you were like, Oh, she knows, yeah, but the lineage. Yeah, at one point, he kind of softballs it to her by saying, like, if there's a train and you could save one person to save a bunch. She was like, But I'm the person, and I was like, Does that mean she knows? Uh like that she's the lineage, does she know everything? Yeah, um, but she meant literally like in that um metaphor, but she was like, I I can make the choice, which is like I would say like if I had oh, go ahead. I was just saying I was surprised that he actually was putting it in the tea. I know, yeah, like I supp he he planned on going through with it, yeah, yeah. Um until it was too late.
SPEAKER_04Until it was too late, yeah. I mean it had to steep.
SPEAKER_05Oh wait, they did it had to steep 27 minutes.
SPEAKER_06That was the only unrealistic thing, but it was very funny. Camille does not take 27 minutes. Come on.
SPEAKER_03Her garden herbs do.
SPEAKER_06I know. Right. But no, I thought that was very funny. As someone who drinks a lot of tea.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, there's a lot of commentary online about how uh nasty uh that tea would be after being steeped for 27 minutes and cold.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um yeah, there's well, we can get to it later because I'm like, there's just a lot of questions about how this all ended. Even the last scene. I'm like, wait, what? Like, how is it daytime and you're with your son already and bells are ringing? Like the sheriff just shot her in the head.
SPEAKER_04I know.
SPEAKER_03We have to get you to a doctor.
SPEAKER_04We don't know what happened to her.
SPEAKER_03Like the one doctor on the island is delivering a baby, right?
SPEAKER_06As far as we know. Well, I mean, I think it leaves it in a good spot, like as far as Loftus thinks like, oh, she's dead, the island's been saved. Right. I mean, because he doesn't know what that was really been saved because that's right. Yeah, he doesn't know that the person holy Evan knows, right? Yeah. That someone, you know, he shut the door on that dude.
SPEAKER_03Oh, right, right, right, right, right. So the island already took a person, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Right.
SPEAKER_03So she could live in the and it's still done.
SPEAKER_06Well, but you don't know if she lives, right? It's not done, it just supplies them more time. It's like that was like the whole point of the film was like, oh, you have to feed the island we're so often.
SPEAKER_04Because the eight bells ringing means eight more people have to be sacked. That's true, right? Right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04But also the fact that that I'm forgetting the Evan, Evan is the Evan is the last descendant. Well, second to last descendant means they can't leave, or he the people born on the island still can't leave until he dies.
SPEAKER_03Right. And also everything he just went through with Ruth, he now has to be like, Am I gonna do that to my son?
SPEAKER_06And of course to know any of that, though.
SPEAKER_03Who?
SPEAKER_06Lothis.
SPEAKER_03What do you mean?
SPEAKER_04Well, doesn't he know because Ruth told him about didn't Ruth tell him about right, right?
SPEAKER_06Oh, but like that's I I guess that sure. I'm like, but like the storm stopped. Like part of him has to be thinking, oh, why did the storm stop?
SPEAKER_04Maybe maybe it is okay.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So oh, he doesn't know about the bells. I forget what we know. We know about the bells, collective, like audiences.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I don't think he knows about the bells. Was that in them in the films? I don't remember.
SPEAKER_03No, no, no. I think it's in what it's in something in the priest's office.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think you're right. I think that it is interesting because now each of the characters knows something, but they no one knows everything, right?
SPEAKER_03No one knows everything. I hate that. I know, I know, I hate that so much, but then also, right, because so that's one of the things like what's gonna happen next season, and everybody's like, Where's so-and-so? Yeah, I don't know that character's name. Janitor guy.
SPEAKER_04Oh, Kenny.
SPEAKER_03They're gonna, yeah, where is he? Yeah, he actually killed Kenny.
SPEAKER_04He killed Kenny.
SPEAKER_03That's fantastic. Um, yeah, lots of unresolved things.
SPEAKER_04I will say, like, if I have one quibble with the show, it's that sometimes I w going back to what you said about um um them not just telling Ruth who she, you know, the the whole thing. Like sometimes I wanted the characters to talk to each other. I wanted Tom to tell Evan why he couldn't leave. Right. And it's not just that he's like uh uh afraid to let him go or a possessive dad. Um and it the I will say like the the whole concept of people being born on the island and not being able to leave, I it was a little um uh uh uh the the way they the way it the way it worked or or the way like who knew and who didn't. And it's like the old timers seem to know, and enough people know that they put like a like a light out where you can so you know as far as you can sail before you can turn around, but yet no one from the younger generation knows, and Tom kind of knows, but he's in denial. Um it would just seem like if this was if this was a real thing, like the doctor, as soon as somebody got pregnant, the doctor would be like, get off the island! Like, why didn't they tell why didn't they tell the the the um Bashir's wife to like leave immediately if she could have the baby off island?
SPEAKER_03Great point. Great point, because you could also argue, like, well, they set it up that like people know, but people who come to the come and go, nobody really comes and stays for a while. But you're right. The minute that the sheriff's wife was pregnant, why isn't someone why isn't one of these old timey why isn't Garrett in the lighthouse being like, get off the island?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, why isn't Wick saying get off the island?
unknownAgree.
SPEAKER_06So there is also that secrecy of like shows a limit to what they know, like a lot of it is folk tale. Um the kids do talk about that. True, yeah. I mean, right, yeah, obviously, I think if you try to take the logic too far, like a show like that, it right it breaks down, you're not necessarily supposed to.
SPEAKER_04I feel like it could have there could have been a few more lines of dialogue that maybe just smooth it over a little bit more, like yeah, the kids know, but they hate it, and that's why they're so pisiology.
SPEAKER_03Right. Well, so it's interesting because so Emma for a long time was like, why isn't he just telling Evan Island is cursing and like he can't whatever?
SPEAKER_06And I was like, Oh, that's sorry, but he's professing that he doesn't really believe it.
SPEAKER_03I mean, like by episode five.
SPEAKER_04That makes sense for Tom because he is in denial, doesn't want to believe it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you'd think also maybe like Ruth would tell him, yeah, maybe I mean those some stuff, right? Right.
SPEAKER_06Um BMC was just like, hey, it's life, bad stuff happens. I mean, she was kind of like, yeah, this is it, it ain't it is what it is, right?
SPEAKER_03This happens, and that's life, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, but like what I was saying was I think mom is so protective of Evan that he'd be like, oh my god, he would just like go crazy. He's already like fighting back and not paying, you know, not doing the rules and stuff like that. That if we told him something like that, he would just be like, Well, what the fuck does anything matter? And just off like be a hooligan on the island forever.
SPEAKER_06Um so if everyone fled the islands, it would really die, you know, like you know, not work any of the jobs, right? You still need a certain population to just keep going. If you can't leave the island, like yeah, screw it, you're stuck here too.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Um so maybe that's something that gets explored more in the second.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and interestingly, like that's a classic theme of like lots of I mean lots of small islands today where um people, you know, the younger generation leaves and and the the the the islands die off because it's just left with old people.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04So that's interesting.
SPEAKER_03Um let's these kids.
SPEAKER_06I would say that annoying.
SPEAKER_03They're the only annoying part of the like Matt and like trope, and oh, Kevin has this like young hot spitfire girlfriend who's gonna smooch him, and like let's just ransack his dad's I know, like she's an off-isle girl, Lisa.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, oh that's right.
SPEAKER_03She's wild, um, but like just all the kids in the car, and I know that's like inspired, but like just them being the worst. I know, I know, a little smarter, a little more empathetic. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, why are it something always like we complain about this all the time? Like, how many shows have we watched where these teens are like this in every show? I know they've got to figure out something new.
SPEAKER_06Teens are kind of like that. I know, I guess that's true.
SPEAKER_04I guess that's true for that.
SPEAKER_06It's TV, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I feel like in a show like this, where you're kind of putting things in a new, like in a kaleidoscope, like you could have made them a little more cool and empathetic. I don't know, something giving them a little more. Yeah, I don't get much more, even out of Evan, who I think is doing a good job on the show, but like as an actor, but like so I don't know, just a little bit more would have been good. But this also goes back to like this episode by episode, like everybody gets over things real quick, getting over things real quick. He's like, I loved the heart to heart that they finally had when he found out the real history of his mom. Yeah, um, that brought him closer together, and he was like, We're gonna go to Red Zoc, like all the things, but um I don't know. Then Evan was just like, Okay, uh I'm fine, but still sneaking out with his friends when they're in a shelter.
SPEAKER_06Oh yeah, I mean at that one you felt like he he had a little bit more, a lot more pause than the other times he was sneaking out, like he didn't want to, right? It's true anyway.
SPEAKER_04That's sincerely promised this time that he wouldn't.
SPEAKER_03So right, but guess what he did?
SPEAKER_06Still did teens be teening, yeah, went down the ladder. Um the murder hole.
SPEAKER_03The other thing that I'm like the murder hole, and then the other thing that uh struck me when I was thinking about like episode to episode like the boogeyman came back, ran through the streets, set a gas station on fire, and then we never talked about it again.
SPEAKER_06I know, right? Like well, the very next episode was like the start of the storm, right?
SPEAKER_04Right, there was they mentioned uh something about one of the um uh one of the emptys getting killed. They mentioned that.
SPEAKER_03They did, yeah.
SPEAKER_04They mentioned that. Uh I don't remember when, but yeah, it was in the next episode. There was that at least.
SPEAKER_03So my issue with episode to episode not having continuity is a me problem. Is that what you're saying? I'm not hearing things.
SPEAKER_04I think it's a it's a me binging versus you episode by episode.
SPEAKER_03That's what I'll say.
SPEAKER_04It's a little advantage. I would say one thing I thought about the boogeyman is is uh they never they never took his mask off. Like, okay, I guess they just assumed he was like risen from the you know uh of a monster from hell, but what if it was just some guy? I mean, it was probably not just some guy, but nobody took the mask off to see like, is it is there a person under there? Who is it?
SPEAKER_03Right. And isn't that like typical in those movies? To reveal the killer? No?
SPEAKER_06Oh, so maybe that's it.
SPEAKER_03Remind me? Um, did the girls all see the boogeyman? Or did they just think she was being crazy and she takes it?
SPEAKER_04I just thought she was being crazy.
SPEAKER_06Well, I mean, did he jump out of the their he jumped out of their third floor he did, but I don't think they saw him. Yeah, but they had gone back inside the floor.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, something. But they probably thought, I mean, who knows? They probably tried to blame that on her too.
SPEAKER_03But like, that's what I mean. Like, all the boogeyman stuff happened. Somehow it had to get around that people were talking about that. That's a huge thing. Like, that's really big, even for this island.
SPEAKER_04Right, like the boogeyman is big.
SPEAKER_03Right. Everyone was traumatized. It's like war. And so the fact that like nobody was really, and I know we we got into the storm, but it's like nobody was talking about it, but those girls are gonna find out that it was true.
SPEAKER_04I said I was waiting for a scene where the girls find out that it were any of those women in the shelter?
SPEAKER_03I didn't see that. I didn't see any of them. No, I didn't see them. I didn't see the gas station guy. Anyway, maybe there's another shelter.
SPEAKER_04Do we think the gas station guy lived? I wasn't sure if the gas station guy lived. Although they didn't mention he was dead, so just like the boogeyman like threw him like into next Wednesday.
SPEAKER_03Oh, maybe he just you know broke some layers. That's also important.
SPEAKER_04Fine.
SPEAKER_03Um let's pivot back to another very clever, totally unexpected episode that ended up being two episodes, is when because you're like, Why is Wick digging up a grave? And like that ends one episode, and then you start the next episode, and Tom's like, You dig up the grave and all of this, and it's very calm. And then she says, No, he says, How do you know this? Whatever they were saying, and she says, Well, because he told us, and then you find out he's alive, and it's such a clever, like trick on all of us, because like I would never have expected that ever, right? Did anybody no? She's a little like shaken up about the whole thing. Everything about that is both funny and terrifying, yeah, but so so clever, like so well done, yeah. And that in itself, the actor playing Warren, yeah. What's his name? Hamish, yeah.
SPEAKER_04McLeod. Yeah, yeah. Who was in a I'm sure you watched a Paul, uh oh yeah, I love Midnight Bass, which was also takes place on an island, right?
SPEAKER_03Um and people were saying that was an inspiration too. When you go when you get thrown back and it's like the priest is trying to save everybody, um, or whatever. But the fact that he's even in it is just yeah, pretty cool.
SPEAKER_04The comedy horror line is really great in that scene where Tom goes into the room because he's it's scary, like the guy is scary, and then you see the note, uh, Patricia's note that she wrote for him that says, Um, uh, hello, my name is Patricia. Uh, did I say something to offend you?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then she pops in, like, oh, I left my purse.
SPEAKER_03When he first speaks, and Tom jumps. It's so funny because we all jump, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um and then the twist, even in that, when he's like, Oh, you have to kill me, and it ends the curse, and blah blah blah blah. And then at the end, or he's like, I don't want to die. Yeah, like what an interesting twist. Because doesn't Wick say it? He's like, You never know with men, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Right. Yeah, you shouldn't have let him out because he ate tuna.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03He's feeling pretty good.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_04Um, what did you think about the the the previous the prior episode, which is all in the past, and we learn we learn about the beginnings of the yeah, I mean it was necessary.
SPEAKER_06I mean, not my favorite. I like set the one to follow up afterwards. Yeah. It's just more it's more fun. Um yeah, but I mean a good place for like a sort of a lore heavy episode after um after Patricia's you know midnight cocktails episode. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I I liked it. I thought it I mean it informed a lot, right? It gave you a lot of history. Um and she is fantastic. I love it. It took me, yeah, it took me a bit to go, oh, that's what's her name from um Nurse Jackie.
SPEAKER_05Yes, Benny Open.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and now she's everywhere. Yeah, I think because it's this two-fold thing where she's doing this in the Jennifer Lopez thing, but um she was great, and she's also such a good comedic actress, like she had some good, good, like yeah, comedic moments there too.
SPEAKER_04Totally agree. Because the episode as a whole wasn't as funny as the other episodes, but she was very funny.
SPEAKER_03Yes, yes. Um, I thought that was pretty great. I thought it was a good episode. I mean, it was totally watchable, yeah. Um and it it just laid the foundation for a lot more. Um let's talk about characters. We're talking about some so far. I just want to, so I mean, Patricia obviously she has a lot of history and background. Oh, here's what I was gonna say. Here's something that I still think is crazy. I really thought that we were going to find out that there was some connection between Patricia and Tom, other than just coworkers, because I'm like, why are they always in the car together? It's not it's not like business, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_04I thought we were gonna find out that Tom doesn't drive, but then we see him later that he has a Jeep. So I thought, well, why is she picking him up all the time?
SPEAKER_03Why is she picking him up all the time? Why are they always in the car together? And sometimes he's driving, sometimes she's she's driving. And I'm like, yeah, why did she pick him up from the inn? They're just buds, they're just buds. But I was like, Oh, she's gonna be. I I thought for sure there was gonna be like some not romantic interest, that's not what I mean at all. Like familial, like she was gonna be cousin to his wife, something like that. At first, I was like sister, but then I'm like, that's too close. Yeah, um, but I was like, we never get that. So I'm like, oh, they're just yeah, close.
SPEAKER_04Because we actually don't I thought it was interesting, interesting that we don't learn much about her background at all. You know, we don't know if she, you know, who her parents were, or if she had family, or seems like she was born on the island and grew up there. Yeah, we don't know for sure, right?
SPEAKER_03Right, like her history for us starts in high school with was it high school when the boogeyman came around? Yeah, I think so. She said she was living with other girls though. So maybe it was after high school.
SPEAKER_06I thought it was high school. No, I was pretty sure she was in high school and then happened.
SPEAKER_03So he just went house to house? I thought it was a situation where other girls in the house got killed.
SPEAKER_06No, it was just other girls in the island.
SPEAKER_03Oh okay.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah. Who knows about family?
SPEAKER_04I know.
SPEAKER_03Maybe that's a thing on the island, you don't talk about it. Because they were sacrificed to the island.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Bell rang.
unknownBell rang.
SPEAKER_03Although, didn't the priests seem to think like it hadn't happened in so long?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, because also Wick says early on that the island is waking up. So it does seem like it's been a while.
SPEAKER_01Right. Right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, what the hell did the priests figure out that he was so cowardly to kill himself?
SPEAKER_04I think he figured out that that the island required sacrifices.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And that somebody had to die for each time the bell rings.
SPEAKER_06Oh, so you think he was trying to- I can't do it.
SPEAKER_04I'm not gonna do it.
SPEAKER_06Or is he trying to sacrifice himself to oh maybe to feed the island?
SPEAKER_04But I think you have to go and like sit in the chair and get eaten by the thing. Right. Whatever it is.
SPEAKER_03Do we think Kenny sat in the chair?
SPEAKER_06Oh, he was in the room.
SPEAKER_03He was in the room.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I guess that counts.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I guess that counts. Like horseshoes. You're near the chair.
SPEAKER_06Near the chair.
SPEAKER_03Wick. He's great. He's a little unhinged.
SPEAKER_05Stephen Root, loving.
SPEAKER_03That guy, that actor. Yeah. He's everywhere all the time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Barry, did you just I mean I know him as a stapler guy?
SPEAKER_04Right. He's a stapler guy.
SPEAKER_03We started it, we never finished it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Stapler guy.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Um, yeah, he grew on me. I thought I thought Wick was annoying in the early, like the first one or two episodes, but he was too much. Yeah, he was. Yeah, he was a lot. Maybe in just the first episode. I mean, because the second episode made me laugh where he was boarding up and he just like opens the door. I was gonna say, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And he also was supposed to be drunk in irate, so like he had to be over the top.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, obviously, the going out on the vote part humanizes him.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Not like he wasn't human, but you know what I mean? Like you get to know him a little bit better.
SPEAKER_04Right before the story. Yep.
SPEAKER_03And you find out that his sweetheart was Jerry.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_03Now Jerry's with that guy.
SPEAKER_04I know.
SPEAKER_03Like he did that to his friend, and so now he can't have a girlfriend.
SPEAKER_04I think it was too painful to be around her.
SPEAKER_03Um, so you call him the shaman. I called him a drug dealer.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, well, they called him the shaman, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, for sure they did.
SPEAKER_06Calls himself a shaman. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I think Patricia called him a drug dealer.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03And I was like, that's what I'm going with. But Chris Flang, I know. What funny casting.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um Massachusetts Native.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And uh I think one of the funnier things I saw actually, and maybe the only funny thing that happened in the last two episodes was his callback where he's like running into the shelter, and then he drops, he's yelling wick at Tom, which is so funny. Then he drops like a goddamn sop.
SPEAKER_05Tom's like, leave it, leave it.
SPEAKER_03And then he just goes, gets sucked up. Here's what I will say, because it was noticeable to me. It was like this roaring storm. There was literally a tornado right next to him that plucked the drug dealer off the ground.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And like you get the sense that Tom is like, that is not a tornado, it's something else. But because he kind of says that, doesn't he?
SPEAKER_06Like, well, I think he's fully believing there's some sort of supernatural thing happening.
SPEAKER_03Right. In any case, what we saw, what we saw, what we saw, yeah, and it's bad. And he's still going, he's still going out there. But then when it gets to Ruth's, it's like the storm's not happening. It's like you hear a little rain, but it's not the like that you think it should be. They never go in a basement, they're not like hunkered down.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03They could have played that up a little bit more, in my opinion, because you kind of forget that like there's this outside threat, but then they must have made the decision to be like, it's too intimate of a scene, you won't hear them or something.
SPEAKER_04We're gonna quiet it down so they can really have this conversation. I would have liked a little steeping the tea in the cellar.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Like people do, like people do. Um, and then I mean, we mentioned him, but I think we have to talk about our good good friend, yes, um, John from the Leftovers, yes, playing the sheriff. Yeah, he is just befuddled.
SPEAKER_04He is befuddled, yeah. Uh big dramatic role program at the end.
SPEAKER_03So yeah, did he get off the island? Did the baby come? We don't know anything.
SPEAKER_08We don't know.
SPEAKER_03But that's one okay. Never mind, I'm not gonna get into it. Um but he's a pretty good character. I like that he's like kind of Patricia's ride or die, like yeah, believes in her, is on her side, and then she tells him everything. She just tells him, yeah. And he's like, okay, gotta go. Believes her, and you know that's a big thing for me. You gotta believe.
SPEAKER_04You gotta believe. Yeah, uh, yeah. I like what I like their relationship a lot. I thought it was really uh well, very well done. Um uh because he didn't I feel like he didn't get he also did not get as much to do as I would have liked. So hoping for more for uh more for him in season two as well.
SPEAKER_03Oh, kind of hope he gets off the island, but I think he's stuck there forever because of his baby.
SPEAKER_08I know, I know.
SPEAKER_03Um we talked about all these guys. Do we need to talk about Rosemary?
SPEAKER_06Rosemary. I mean, part of me is like, oh, she should get an episode, but also at the same time, I mean, a little is a lot, can be a lot, or a little can be enough, right? If we could do a whole episode of her, right? Um, I guess that's the balance, right? They have all these different characters, there's only 10 episodes in the season. Um and it, I mean, for the first half, I was definitely like, uh, I just want like the Lopis is the one that carries this, but that that wasn't the case all totally by the end. I was sort of you know on board with all the different characters, but and early going, I was like, okay, yeah, keep carrying it. Yeah, you know, then as we talked about, things flipped with the Sunset Cocktails episode or changed, I should say.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Are you um Paul, are you a Matthew Reese fan prior to this?
SPEAKER_06I've never seen him in anything before. Wow.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he doesn't watch a lot of TV, folks. Holy calling him in. For me, TV is good.
SPEAKER_03TV is just like a bunch of teenagers in a car on a haunted island.
SPEAKER_04I'm not sorry.
SPEAKER_06Podcast is great, yes, awesome. Thank you.
SPEAKER_05That's right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, uh G no. I mean, what's he he was in the Americans, right? Is that like it he was in Brothers and Sisters?
SPEAKER_04Brothers and sisters.
SPEAKER_06I have two, but I haven't watched it. Uh a brother and a sister.
SPEAKER_04Oh uh, he was most recently in uh The Beast and Me with Claire Danes on Netflix.
SPEAKER_03That's right. That's right.
SPEAKER_04Very, very different character. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Did he do like a Perry Mason remake?
SPEAKER_04Yes. Yes, which I did not watch.
SPEAKER_06But he played Perry Mason?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Recently. Really? Yeah. Although I remember hearing about that show, but yeah, I never watched that. Yep.
SPEAKER_04He's also like in real life, he is a fantastically charming person. If you see him in interviews, he just did a uh Criterion Closet. He's just a delightful human being.
SPEAKER_06And he's married to Carrie Russell, who sacrifices 90-year-olds for his health. That's benefit. That's right.
SPEAKER_03Well, even hearing him um talk about the well, that boat scene when the boat rocks and he's just so funny. And he talks about like how he like the way he's talking about that. He and he has that Welsh accent also that makes him just it charming. Yeah, um, but yeah, he's very, very funny about all of that.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, I love watching the behind-the-scenes stuff, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um it was it's fine with this character, it was a short transformation for us too. Because I think in certainly episodes one, two, and three, you're we're all team loftist, like everybody on the aisle is kind of you know, quirky slash uh not good at what they do, with you know, with maybe the exception of um Bashier, who's sort of like a voice of reason kind of, but you know, it then it quickly flips, obviously. With oh, I guess Wick is not just a drunk asshole, and you know, Patricia proves herself to be more than competent. Yeah, you know, and Loftus is the one who's sort of in trouble. Yeah. So it's a pretty early, it's kind of a cool early flip.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. That's a great point. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I mean, it's an early flip, but like when did it when did we see that he the flashback to when Evan when his wife was pregnant? Because it was very clear. I felt like, oh, she can't leave the island. She stroked out when they were on the ferry because she couldn't leave the island, right?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, and I thought, like, when people were saying that to him, like he knew that he knew he knew the whole time, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, oh, I had another thought. What was I gonna say? Oh, I'm sorry, but when you were talking about like going back to the early episodes, it dawned on me and it clicked kind of a little bit when I was watching it. But do you remember in the beginning episodes where he's like, Why do you have to leave at 11 every day? Like to Ruth, he was like, Like, why? Yeah, he was trying to like figure out her schedule, yeah. And then in the end, you see how like she has to go because she has to help the person up the steps and down the steps, and then she has to do this and then she has to do that. Yeah, I know she's so busy and important and needed.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. Um she's dead. We don't know that. We don't know. Oh, we don't know that.
SPEAKER_02But if she dies, does she really die?
SPEAKER_03Yes, is that what happens?
SPEAKER_06I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I don't know because she got a built bullet through the head, and she's not dead yet.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
unknownFace.
SPEAKER_04Oh, really? Yeah, maybe just went.
SPEAKER_06Oh, you think it just grazed her? Well, yeah, I mean, obviously the show, I'm sure, has limitations on how much core it's gonna show. It wasn't like the back of her head blew off, you know.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's Apple, they can do whatever they want.
SPEAKER_06Oh, I know, but yeah, it's in terms of that, like oh very little blood on the rug.
SPEAKER_03And I just fully assume that there was blood and that she was shot like in the head.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's not impossible, people can live with that, but yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Maybe she's alive but in a coma.
SPEAKER_03Wasn't she talking at the end? Yeah, briefly, but yeah, but not a lot. Not a lot, not a lot.
SPEAKER_06Um I don't think she'll last as long as the tea steeping.
SPEAKER_03Um okay. Question: Where is this island?
SPEAKER_04Maine. Yeah, yeah. I should have said it more. I should have said it. I know, not a lot of accents, but I kind of appreciated it because we all know. Like a little bit, but nobody has like a really strong main accent.
SPEAKER_06Well, just I guess it's the one the episode two where they're all egging them on to stay at the inn. Yeah, all those old dudes do have pretty thick yeah, it sounds to me like Bachman accents.
SPEAKER_04I guess that that one guy who's necessarily as a storm was blowing up, and like he's got kind of a yeah, he's got kind of a main or thing going on. Or Maine, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it feels like it could be like anywhere.
SPEAKER_06I hope it's even funny that they reveal it's like off the coast of New Hampshire, just that little chimpy section like Portsmouth. Like it's it can't even be an island off of Maine, it's an island off of New Hampshire.
SPEAKER_03Right. Well, I just thought we were building to Massachusetts, and I think it was because of so many Martha's Vineyard uh references and I don't know, maybe the Jaws stuff, but I just fully thought it was Massachusetts until he said to the fake guy in the inn. Uh he's like, I grew up in Massachusetts. So I was like, oh, but you wouldn't say that if the island was in Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So it's it's gotta be New Hampshire or Maine.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. And I think they said that to make sure that you knew that he was not a he was not born on the island.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_06He could have said I was born on the mainland.
SPEAKER_03He could have said that.
SPEAKER_06Right.
SPEAKER_03Because that's what Martha's Vineyards say.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um but anyway, we know it's not Massachusetts, which I was like, oh I mean, I think we know because of that answer.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um let me see if I have any other notes.
SPEAKER_04Do you guys know about uh so the creator of the show is Katie Dippold? Do you know about her tweet?
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No. You can tell him.
SPEAKER_04Okay. So she I'll send it to you. You might know when you see the picture. You might know when you see it. Uh she became very Twitter famous for a tweet that she that she made that is very funny. And I just sent it to Two years ago, right? Yeah, it was a while back. Uh oh, I sent it to you directly, Paul. Should I send it to Lisa?
SPEAKER_06No, that's fine. Did you text it? The magic of I texted it. Oh, that looks vaguely familiar.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so for everybody else, it's uh TBT to Halloween when I dressed up as the Baba Duke, so she's fully dressed up as the Baba Duke while everyone else is not in a costume.
SPEAKER_02That's so funny, but she's fully committed to the bet, which I fully appreciate.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which is even glowing.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I could just regular eye. Yeah, 348,000. Right.
SPEAKER_04And I mean, have we all had a Baba Duke moment?
SPEAKER_06Well, no, it's 2016. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yes. I mean, I can say very relatable. I could say pretty recently, and I wasn't upset about it at all. Like, I don't it does, I don't think she was upset, but she looks upset in the picture. Um, but we were doing a Rocky horror picture show thing, and I kept saying to everyone in the thread, we're dressing up, right? Like we're dressing up. And I went full magenta. I mean, when I say full magenta, I was like hair, makeup, like sewed a costume. I was like, we're good doing it, right? And then everybody else was wearing little top hats, and I was like, um, I will say I was not the most dressed up person at the thing, but I was the most dressed up person with my group.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But I was like, if you're telling me to dress up, I'm dressing up, right?
SPEAKER_06You're gonna what if no one said dress up and you just dressed up like that? That'd be different.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's a Halloween party.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Wait, well, how did you dress up, Paul? What were you dressed at? How did you dress?
SPEAKER_06For Rocky Horror? Yeah, yeah, I had like a vest on. I was the dude who wore a vest. Who's that guy?
SPEAKER_03I I understand he's uh I understand then there was the time, then there was the time back in the 90s when we were going to a Halloween party, but it was like the day after Halloween, you know, like Halloween was on a Thursday, and we were going to Halloween party on a Friday, something like that. Yeah, and we were meeting people at a bar before we went. I it was a tarot card Halloween party.
SPEAKER_08Oh, fun.
SPEAKER_03Head. I was the queen of cups. Did I go to a thrift store and get a big prom dress and then put styrofoam, make a necklace out of styrofoam cups, and then make a whole goddamn thing on my head with cups, cops, cups, cups, cups, cups. And I show up to the bar like that. And we we walked in, and it was like like record scratch, spotlight. Everyone we were meeting was just wearing black, and they were like, Oh, I'm gonna put this on when we get there. I'm gonna put this on when I get there. And I was in full queen. Nice, yeah. This happened to me multiple times, and you don't even remember because you were probably wearing all black, and you're like, I'm gonna put this tarot card on my head when we get there.
SPEAKER_06Sounds like me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it sounded like everybody. That's what everybody did.
SPEAKER_06Uh however, what I was gonna say about this tweet, um, what it reminded me of is you know, so Katie and the other writers and the creators of the show. What I really appreciate is like the horror comedy, it's smart, and it's not just making fun of horror, like it's clearly coming from a place of where they like no like it, but probably love it and admire a lot of the stuff. Um, way too many horror comedies. Like the source of the comedy is the horror, which I think is cheap. Uh it's really hard to do horror comedy that is sometimes scary and sometimes funny. Yeah, it's a really short list of movies. For one, never mind TV shows. Um, in fact, like I feel like the the list of movies that are both funny and scary is really short and probably almost starts and ends with Werewolf, American Werewolf in London. Yeah. Um Evil Dead 2, I guess. I don't know. Uh-huh. Anyway, yeah. So, no, anyway, I mean that's that that tweet from Katie doesn't surprise me that she clearly was in whole hog on the horror part or the horror part of things.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It's a hard tone to get right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I mean, you think they have similar timing, right? You know, like yeah, yeah. There's the setup to the punchline, there's a setup to the scare, they're a little bit similar in ways. But I agree, like it's it's always easier. Hard it's easier to go for oh, like we're gonna laugh at like what is supposed to be the slasher or whatever, uh comedy you want to throw up, as opposed to you know, trying to move people, use the sort of same setup to move people in two different ways, almost like two different opposite reactions, right? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So she was also a writer on Parks and Rack, right? One of my favorite shows of all time. Yeah, so I just saw a an interview with her, um, where she had written this pilot script before Parks and Rack.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_03Way back. And then when she was on Parks and Rack, she showed it to Mike Scher. And I don't know, like if he gave her some feedback or not. I I forget that part, but the what they had asked her was like what was different from that that was like so many years ago to now. And she said that um, like with especially with Tom's character. Um, like I think in that first one, like he just knew it was haunted from the beginning or cursed from the beginning, but she wanted to give it a little more depth and like outsider perspective. Yeah, um, I think I have that right. And then there were a few other things, but basically she was just like time over time, it just became more like deeper somehow. Um, but isn't that interesting that she wrote it so long ago?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, really, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And another clip I saw was she had gone into a cafe in Marblehead, and she was just like, I love this feeling, I just want to use this feeling. So really inspired by North Shawa.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_03Which is where a lot of this is filmed, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um on the North Homegrown Girl.
SPEAKER_03Wait, what?
SPEAKER_04Are you asking if she's from yeah, she from she from here?
SPEAKER_03She's from New Jersey, so I don't know what she was doing up there. There. Um, but Ken, I don't think we gave you an opportunity to talk about if you ever showed up to a um costume party full out and nobody else was.
SPEAKER_04So the not quite, but I will say this year for Halloween, I dressed as um uh Leonardo DiCaprio in um the most recent movie.
SPEAKER_06Um one battle after another.
SPEAKER_04Yes. So I had the bathrobe and I had the glasses and I had the cat. Nobody knew who I was. Nobody knew who I was. They're like oh, you came in your pajamas? Like, what's your costume?
SPEAKER_06Did people think maybe you were the dude? You should have had like a a joint, maybe. I don't know.
SPEAKER_04I yeah, I was trying to figure out what else I could have done. But yeah, some there were some people thought I was a 20-year-old girlfriend with you, right?
SPEAKER_06Exactly.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that would have helped. Uh yeah.
SPEAKER_03Is it but when you told them who you were, they were like, Oh, I saw that movie, or were they just had not seen the movie?
SPEAKER_04Oh no, they had not seen the movie. I mean, I guess it had just come out. Oh, I mean it came out. Yeah, I mean, maybe this year I would have better have better luck. Right. But try it again.
SPEAKER_03You have to wait and see if it wins an Oscar before you can see. Oh, I know one. Let's see if you can remember it.
SPEAKER_06When other people weren't, um I mean, I've been to in a costume where people I thought it was something else, which is not fun.
SPEAKER_03Like that's not fun. That wasn't fun for you.
SPEAKER_06That's not fun.
SPEAKER_03I was thinking more like when you went to in truth, we were all kind of dressed up as um Wizard of Oz and you went as a scarecrow.
SPEAKER_06But I was clearly the scarecrow.
SPEAKER_03You were clearly the scarecrow, but like then walking down the streets of St. Long.
SPEAKER_06A lot of people threatened to light me on fire.
SPEAKER_03He's like, I'm retarded because the costume was anyway.
SPEAKER_06Um straw hanging out.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, like you were really out, yeah. It's one thing to be Dorothy and be cute with pigtails, but you were like straw, straw, yeah, big hat. Right.
SPEAKER_04So that was what I was unexpected, um uh unexpected problem of dressing up as the scarecrow. Like, I wouldn't expect that wouldn't occur to me that people would want to light you on fire.
SPEAKER_03Isn't that crazy? People are terrible, people are terrible, and then there were people that were also like I I'll miss you the most. People were yelling that at him too because it's the line.
SPEAKER_06People are fun and scary. Wow. Um, I got my revenge. I I hit on some random porches and just sat there like I was like an actual scarecrow and waited for people to walk by and jump on them. So I did get some revenge, and it was before cell phones.
SPEAKER_03We don't have any um you know, evidence of that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's pretty good. If you're able to scare people, you got some you got some some just desserts.
SPEAKER_03Any any other things we want to talk about? I feel like there's a bunch of stuff we didn't talk about, but we got the most of it. Oh, I have a note. I'm back to my disjointed um not cat and maybe it happened and you're gonna tell me, Ken.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_03Dale never talked to Patricia about being possessed.
SPEAKER_04No, I don't think so.
SPEAKER_03He was so possessed. I know he was one of the first people that we saw. Yeah, he was never like, oh hey.
SPEAKER_04I know, I know. That's why we needed more Dale.
SPEAKER_03We needed more Dale, more Dale.
SPEAKER_04We needed more Dale. We didn't get Dale's reactions on on much of anything.
SPEAKER_03They did not give him much, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well, it's funny, like I don't know, like I mean, all that's true. Like, I just kind of assume they talked about it, and like we don't need our show time spent on that, you know. You're right, like, sure, like we really could have all these reaction things, but I don't know. I just kind of like that on some level they all know where they live. That's a good point. Um, yeah, you know, well, it's almost like a tacit um understanding of of the weirdness of this place, even though obviously Loftus is trying to has been trying to deny it for the longest time. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Okay. We'll just say, oh, it happened off camera. Every time I don't know what's happening, I'll be like, it happened off camera. Um, so let's do quick predictions for next season.
SPEAKER_06Can I say my favorite quote is because a friend of mine sent me the video too? It was from the last episode. It's like I'll just go fuck myself from Rosemary. I forget what that was a response to.
SPEAKER_03What they were in the um they were okay. The sheriff and Patricia and Rosemary were all in like a separate room.
SPEAKER_06She made some sort of suggestion or something, and I don't know. Uh just on the way out, they just dismissed her.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it was just with her great timing.
SPEAKER_03She's great.
SPEAKER_04So funny.
SPEAKER_03She gets the best lines.
SPEAKER_04She does, she does. But I agree with you, Paul, that I feel like she's good as like a seasoning.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Drop in, say some funny stuff, but I think we have just the right amount of her.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. I mean, unless they come up with something really interesting and clever. Because honestly, even before like Patricia's big episode, yeah, she was a little bit of one note, uh as in terms of her character for the first three episodes. Yeah, that is true. Until until you know, because even though I was like, Oh, even in my I am I even said it out loud. It's like, oh, here comes the episode for Patricia. Like it, yeah, yeah. Initially I was annoyed because, like, oh, Loftus has been sort of carrying this, but yeah, obviously it turned out to be one of the best episodes.
SPEAKER_03It is interesting when you think back though, because Rosemary, she has a lot of knowledge. It is interesting that it was she was proven right with the whole Ruth thing, right? Yeah, so she's like a researcher, but like remember, she was the one who was telling him about the hag. Yeah, and then she knew about the genealogy, and then she's just watching what's happening with this cursed book. Right.
SPEAKER_06She has qualms, right? She was trying to be supportive.
SPEAKER_03Well, I mean, yeah, so Patricia's night.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. She knew she knew that no one is supposed to go down into the uh into the uh the the the basement of the of the the building.
SPEAKER_06The uh the sub basement of the sub basement, right?
SPEAKER_03Like so it's gonna have to come out where she comes into the full, she's like, Well, I'll go fuck myself, but she knows that she knows. Like she's like, I'll go fuck myself, but you guys should be tagging me in. I is how I now think of it, because my guess is she knows most of the lore, if not all of it. Like she knows the the real stuff, yeah. Um okay, so some predictions for here's what I don't understand about even the ending of this season, this season, where it's like storm, storm, storm. But then all of a sudden Tom and his son are together in a car and it's bright and sunny, so it's like the next day, right? Because it was night time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Now it's the next day, or the morning, the morning, right? Like the morning after the storm, right? But I think what Paul said was that makes sense is that the island, like they've got the island got one sacrifice, so it's sort of like settled for the moment, right?
SPEAKER_03So maybe a lot of those tourists get off the island that morning.
SPEAKER_04Maybe, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Cherus, maybe probably not. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. I bet it picks up even like at least a week after, maybe if not like a month or two or something, or like some significant time has passed. I don't know. I kind of hope I don't know. Like, I don't wanna because I have no idea what they're gonna do. And I know I right now I sort of trust them. Um I kind of hope they don't go like full X Files where everything has to be all lore, all connected. You know, I I still want like the fun monsters of the week episodes. Yes, like obviously we want to know more of all the connections, but uh, they could still do like a Kujo reforme I mean or you know, all sorts of you know, plenty of Stephen King things that they could share out with. Yeah, right. Yeah, I want that.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Um okay, so but like we don't think Tom's gonna tell Evan anything.
SPEAKER_04No, probably not. Do we think Tom is still going to try to get tourists to come to the island?
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna say no.
SPEAKER_04But maybe he's wants to bring tourists there to like become sacrifices. Oh would he be that so dark? That's dark, yeah. That's like dark for the show.
SPEAKER_03And now it's loft as being wick. We gotta have Taurus here because of the island.
SPEAKER_06Right now it becomes Wicker Man. Oh at that point, right? Yeah, yeah, I think that's too evil of a turn for him, but maybe maybe that's what happens. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but you know what's interesting that never really followed through to me is Loftus took the mushrooms, saw the things. And so I don't know. I feel like that was forgotten. I actually forgot about it until this very second. That he took the mushrooms and saw the things. So now that's what he sees in the sky when we see a tornado.
SPEAKER_06He's what?
SPEAKER_03Something, the island. Remember, he's like, I saw the thing.
SPEAKER_06Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03He said he saw the thing when he was sleeping on the toy.
SPEAKER_04Saw the thing 24 hours. I'm not clear on what he means by he saw the thing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, but there's no way that he's telling Evan that he's the descendant. Like, there's no way that that's happening.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But the sheriff is definitely for sure gonna be like um who's the descendant. And I know Tom already said I don't know, but that's gonna be the next thing. People are gonna be trying to find out.
SPEAKER_06That's what's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's what's gonna happen.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, you can't leave the island, kids. Sorry. Emma and her friend are trying to leave the house. Oh, you can't leave. They're like, what is he talking about? Emma knows. Well, maybe she doesn't, but yeah, she'll get the reference when I explain it to her later.
SPEAKER_03Um, and we think Ruth is dead.
SPEAKER_04I don't think she's dead.
SPEAKER_03Even if she is dead, is she dead?
SPEAKER_04I think maybe she's in a coma.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04I don't know.
SPEAKER_03But that's which reminds me of the guy. I totally forgot that I was scared by this even before the sunset cruise thing. That guy, the chef, the the captain who was out there, and then they were like, Oh, where is he? And then he washes ashore and they bring him into the hospital. Oh, right, and then it's only Tom in the room, and he wakes up and he's got the white eyes and he attacks him. That was scary.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, that was yeah, very scary. That was great. Yeah, and he died, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay, tell me again why what's his name didn't die in the coffin. Because he's cursed, yeah.
SPEAKER_06I mean, he was doing a deal with the island slash the devil, yeah. He's cursed.
SPEAKER_03Okay, but now Ruth is the descendant of that. Does she die?
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's a good point.
SPEAKER_03She never made a deal, but it's like he made the deal. She might just never die.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, but all the other descendants between them died, right? So yes, presumably, yeah. Yeah, I think it's just him. Unless they're all like buried alive.
SPEAKER_03But also, it could be that there was just always one more to go. Right. No, I'm not understanding logic, but that's fine. I don't need to know. They'll explain it next season.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03When she's dead or alive.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. I predict that Lisa will be an extra on the TV show.
SPEAKER_03That would be the dream. That would be the ultimate Easter egg.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that would be very exciting.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's like shooting right here. I gotta go do it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I know. Well, now that I mean now you can have a part, you can be cast. You don't even have to be an extra. You can show your tourist splash your your your membership card.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna be a hag. Sea hag.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_04You're gonna come dressed as a sea hag, and they're gonna they're gonna be like this. No, no, that's that's way too much.
SPEAKER_03We're not dressing up for this one. Right. Um okay, any last thoughts? Any parting wisdom?
SPEAKER_06No, until I had a lot of fun watching the show. I did too. Yes, same.
SPEAKER_03Came at a really good time, yeah, I think. Like, what a surprise at this time of year. I don't know to have something fun like that. Fun and scary.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Apple TV killing it.
SPEAKER_06Apple TV followed me on Instagram. I'll be back. I don't know if that means we're going to a Halloween party. I've had no interaction with her, but we're all gonna dress as the Babaduke.
SPEAKER_03Exciting. Um, okay, I think we did it. Thank you for listening, everyone. And uh tune in next time when we are starting a new show. No, we're still doing in the pit. I'm still doing the pit when this comes out. So uh just watch all of our socials, go uh to our notes and buy a sweatshirt or a t-shirt or a mug or an apron, whatever you want. And we will talk to you next time. Bye.
SPEAKER_04Bye.
SPEAKER_00What's the procedure, everyone? What's the procedure?
SPEAKER_07Say my name.
SPEAKER_08TV is you're goddamn right.
