Hello and welcome to the Speak Life Podcast. My name is Glenn Scrivener. We've got something different for you this week, just a shorter episode for you. We're not interviewing anyone outside of Speak Life because we have such exciting news within Speak Life. And to tell us more about it, we've got Nate Morganlock all the way from Pennsylvania.
SPEAKER_02Hello, Nate. Hello, Glenn. Yes, we've got some exciting news, and we'd like to share it with the people. Yes, the people.
SPEAKER_01I'm glad you didn't say the common people. And we've also got Max Patterson all the way from Christchurch, New Zealand. Hello, Max. Kiora, how are we doing? Yeah, we're doing very well. Max has been with us for the last couple of years. He came over to begin with on our Foundry Internship Program, and we're going to be learning more about the Foundry Internship Program. Nate Morganlock is going to be joining us on staff as uh what is your job title again, Nate? Um Hi, Lord Admiral.
SPEAKER_02I can't remember what it was. What did we say? Development director.
SPEAKER_01I like it. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Whatever that means. Whatever that comes to mean. And yeah, we'll work that out after after the fact.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's what it meant. That's what it meant. And you fulfilled it perfectly, Nate.
SPEAKER_02Isn't it nice when that happens? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Brilliant. And uh so you're going to be helping out with some speaking around the place, with some producing of content video stuff. That's it. Um but also with the foundry. So um let me let me go to Max. Max, what is the Foundry?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the Foundry is um Speak Life's internship program. So we have five interns this year. Right. Five interns across um uh across the best part of the year um being involved in in all of Speak Life's production. Um so getting behind the tools and and and learning more about God.
SPEAKER_01Very good. And uh so you you did it uh two years ago. Um how did you find coming residentially? You crossed an ocean, crossed a hemisphere just to be with us. Um how were those 10 months for you?
SPEAKER_00It was good. I really, yeah, really enjoyed my time, um, had some pretty awesome friendships which still still stick around today. And um yeah, and and and and really delved into a whole whole variety of things.
SPEAKER_01So Yeah. And uh it was uh interrupted as all things were by the pandemic, and uh then we had uh another year group of uh interns coming uh that have just finished up these last uh ten months and uh they've enjoyed their time. And now this year, as we go into 21-22, uh we want to open up the Speak Life Foundry. We're calling it the Foundry Unlocked, uh, because you can do it around the country, around the world.
SPEAKER_02It's it is it um a risky thing to leave a foundry unlocked. It sort of seems like the sort of thing that ought to be locked. Yes.
SPEAKER_01I didn't think that safety would be your first concern, Nate.
SPEAKER_02Well you know my phrase safety third. So um yeah, but you know, I don't I've never been part of a foundry before, but now I am very much involved.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and uh can you explain a little bit about what the Foundry Unlocked is attempting to do, Nate?
SPEAKER_02So this is um giving people the opportunity to to learn and and develop their creative evangelistic gifts whilst remaining at somewhat removed from this town of Eastport. So it's an opportunity for people to to tap into the things that we're studying, um, the workshops we're doing, the seminars, the teaching. And most, I think, excitingly, are these four intensive weeks that we're gonna have spread throughout the next uh ten months.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I'll get uh Max to say something about these intensives that are coming up. Uh but yeah, there are these three elements to uh the Foundry Unlocked, and one of them is these four intensive weeks where you can come to ESpawn and get hands-on uh practical experience of filmmaking. Uh then there's Friday mornings uh that you can tune into online via Zoom, and uh we're gonna be learning uh about a theology for life and mission. And then Friday afternoons you can tune in again on 24 different Fridays. Um, and in the afternoon, we're gonna be studying about uh stories to win the world. So a real theology of creativity and mission. So if people want to um go to speaklifefoundry.com, they can have a look at uh all the subjects that people uh can come and study on those 24 Fridays. Uh but when people come to Eastbourne, Max, uh, for these four intensives, what can they expect?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so we we've just been prepping um the most recent intensive, the September intensive, um, just coming up, and very looking forward to that. Um we're delving into a variety of subjects, but I guess summed up it's it's really bringing people up to speed um for production in Speak Live. So a big chunk of that, this particular intensive will be uh working in Da Vinci, uh our editing software of choice, and diving into cinematic lighting. Uh and we're also looking into a little bit of location sound recording and camera operation and um and what makes a short film. Um but future intensives will go further into um every every different part of production pretty much.
SPEAKER_01Brilliant. So um those are the more hands-on aspects of filmmaking, and they're the things that you can't really do via Zoom. Uh you can't really do a do a lighting tutorial um online. Um but we're really looking forward to opening up our headquarters here in Eastbourne and uh welcoming people from uh all over the country. We've got these intensives that are running in September, in December, in March, and in May. So if you can block out uh a week um in September, December, March, and May, we'd love to see you at the headquarters here in Eastbourne. Uh Nate, what are you most looking forward to in the next year?
SPEAKER_02Well, I can't really get beyond this first week of doing the first September intensive. I just think the opportunity to, you know, it we're not playing with this expensive equipment, but we are gonna be taught how to use it. And I've been around a lot of um film production for a number of years, but I've always sort of stood at arm's length from any of the technical, you know, uh buttons and things. So I'm I'm personally just excited to actually find out what all this stuff does. Um Nate's the pretty boy in front of the camera, usually. But uh yeah, the fresh face.
SPEAKER_01Um 2010. That's right. Um the ever-wethering face of speaker like that. All right, okay. As we all are, Nate. As we all are.
SPEAKER_02But no, I'm I'm genuinely really excited about getting getting stuck into that. But also, I think there's something really cool about the the Lord has gifted his church to do his mission, and he's he's given us an opportunity to do some incredible things and to learn from one another to work out how to do those as well as we can, so that we can share stuff online and and however else we want to do it. So yeah, just the meeting people, learning what what makes them tick, what gifts God's given them, seeing the way creativity is sort of pouring out of them, seeing what God's doing in their life, and um and yeah, just serving together in this exciting time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, the togetherness is is such a joy, and uh we've been we've been inviting people down to Eastbourne uh for a number of years to study with us, go a mission with us, and produce resources together. It's become the foundry in the last couple of years, and we're just thrilled that it can now become the foundry unlocked and that we can share the wealth with many, many more people. I had a uh message from somebody just this morning uh from a church, they're wanting to recruit um somebody for uh a digital media coordinator, and uh they're looking around for people who can really help them reach out online in their locality. And uh as soon as I let him know about uh the the Speak Life Foundry and the Foundry Unlocked, he was absolutely thrilled and let me let me see what he said. He said, Great to see, this is exactly what we've been looking for. We could really use these. So I I wonder, e even if the the Foundry Unlocked is uh not for you, maybe it's for somebody who you know, maybe you've got a relative or a friend who would be great to join us, or maybe your church or a church that you know um could use the Speak Life Foundry Unlocked as a way of raising up their own interns and and um and really we could partner together with different churches. We have uh a number of different people who are already in the employee of churches who are gonna come with us and just give up those 24 Fridays and those four intensive weeks. And uh we think it could be a real mixed mode of learning that could uh that could bless the church.
SPEAKER_00If I could jump in, I think what what makes this special as well, because we do live in a world where you can learn a wide variety of this stuff in in any location, um which is really special. There is so many resources online. But what makes this special, particularly the intensives, is it's specific to production in Speak Life. So if if you like the kind of videos that Speak Life makes, um, we really make it specific to how we shoot things and the type of content that we shoot. Um so yeah, it is it is really um prioritizing evangelistic and Christian media. Right, right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and so you'll get a look under the hood and uh you'll figure out what the Speak Life philosophy is and the theology behind all that we create.
