Advent - Week 3: Joy

Celebration Church Season 5 Episode 3

In this third week of Advent, Discipleship Pastor Jennifer Davis and Family Pastor Jolie Sims lean into a joy that runs deeper than “happy”—the kind that doesn’t melt away when life gets messy, stressful, or sad.

They unpack joy as something rooted in God’s goodness and grace, not tied to circumstances or emotions that change by the minute. Jennifer points to Nehemiah 8—“the joy of the Lord is your strength”—as a picture of joy that can hold both repentance and restoration at the same time. And Jolie connects it to Jesus’ words in John 15:11: His joy in us, making our joy full.

With the help of kids (aka tiny theologians with light-up sneakers), Jolie makes it practical: happiness is like an ice cream cone—sweet, real, and sometimes gone fast. Joy is the never-ending cone: steady, lasting, and always available because God is always present. They talk about what we can learn from kids—their wonder, generosity, and fearless love—and how childlike faith reminds us that our Father really is taking care of us, so we can live open-handed and joy-filled.

If your season feels heavy or complicated, this conversation is a reminder: you can feel real sadness and still have joy—because Jesus is near, and His joy doesn’t run out.
