On June 28, 2022, YANA hosted law professors Bridget J. Crawford '91 and Emily Gold Waldman '99, authors of a new book, Menstruation Matters: Challenging the Law's Silence on Periods, which explores the burgeoning menstrual advocacy movement and analyzes how the law should evolve to take menstruation into account. The conversation had many further implications than the title might cause you to believe. If you are interested in gender and sex discrimination, constitutional equal protection, the environment, public health, workers and labor rights, poverty and disenfranchisement, racial and economic equity, public education, cultural taboos, bullying, mental health, consumer rights and product safety, and tax and fairness, then this discussion is for you. Participants learned that there are many possible legal avenues through which individuals, and nonprofit organizations like those in the YANA community can pursue to help address the many larger issues close to our missions. As our guests have written in their book: “Menstruation is a threshold justice issue.”
