Episode 36: COVID, vaccines and the media, with guest Dr. Katherine Foss
Dr. Katherine Foss is a Professor of Media Studies at the School of Journalism and Strategic Media at Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Foss teaches about health communication, television, and gender studies. The book that Dr. Foss wrote, “Constructing the Outbreak: Epidemics in Media and Collective Memory,” analyzes seven epidemics from the past 200 years, and describes how shifts in both medicine and journalism influenced the outcomes of those pandemics. Dr. Foss’ pronouns are she/her/hers, and so are mine.
I can’t wait to hear what she has to tell us about the current pandemic and its media coverage. Let’s jump in!
Outline of topics:
1. Past epidemics and media coverage- a short review
2. The COVID epidemic
a. Was the CDC silenced by the Trump administration during 2020?
b. How else did the media influence the pandemic’s effect on the US and the world?
3. Mask wearing- why it is a political issue
4. Vaccine hesitancy
5. Vaccine alarmism

Dear listeners: you know how I keep saying that you should leave reviews for my podcast so that I can grow my audience and Determine Our Future community? Well, I just tried leaving a review for another show, and it was so hard! So now I understand why I keep asking for this and not getting that many reviews.
In my show notes and transcript, I am including two links that have great instructions for leaving a review on Apple Podcasts and on other podcast apps. If you just have time to leave one, please choose Apple.
For Stitcher podcasts, you need to go to www.stitcher.com to leave a review.
For the Overcast app, you can leave a star rating for individual episodes of a podcast. So you would go to the episode options, and next to the I for Info button, there is a blank star. If you click on the star, you have “starred” the episode and other people using Overcast can see that you like it. So please do that for my eps if you use Overcast to listen.
Castbox, Podchaser and Podcast Addict are other popular listening apps; to leave reviews or comments, go to the DOF podcast overview with the list of episodes below, and look for the Comments button or Review button.
Other ways to connect with me: subscribe to the podcast on your app, so new eps are always available to you, whenever you are ready to listen. And join the DOF Facebook group. And go to determineourfuture.com to sign up for once-a-week max emails and more extras. And contact me on Facebook, Twitter or through my website. Do all of those things, okay? LOL
I would love to hear from you, and thanks for your support of my show.
See my transcript for all of the research I used in the making of this episode.
Music credits are as follows: gravitationalWaves, departures, seachange, reCreation and urbanblues are all by airtone; aether theories is by Vidian. See the full credits in the transcripts of each episode.
