Since my previous podcast was rather serious, I wanted to record a more light-hearted one, more in tune with my actual creative state of mind.

I have a lot of fun while writing, and the name of the nefarious new bishop in A Blazing Truth is an anagram of ‘Serpent’. At first, I played around with the letters of Sherlock Holmes’ foe Moriarty, but couldn’t come up with anything remotely normal sounding. Luckily, serpent worked just fine. (You’ll have to read the book to find out what name I came up with 😉)

Because of his broken leg, Bishop Marsden, as you will recall from A Divine Truth, was given as a small downstairs bedroom, a broom cupboard converted hastily to accommodate the prelate. I couldn’t resist having one chapter entitled “Ruminations in the Broom Cupboard” and another called “Enjoying the Fruits of the Broom Cupboard”. The good bishop is amazingly productive in that tiny space.

The original manuscript of A Blazing Truth ended with Chapter Forty-Seven: An Archbishop-in-Waiting, some forty-one pages before the conclusion of the final version. At the time, I felt there was no more to be said. But when I compared the word count of this novel with that of the previous two, and of the Riding Out books, I realized it was woefully lacking.

My readers were being dealt a short hand: something had to be done.

It was then that my nefarious new bishop complained that he wasn’t ready to leave the stage yet, and would I please pick up my figurative pen and continue his narrative?

As it turned out, he was about to be very active, which I would have missed if I hadn’t done his bidding and followed him to the end of his story.  In fact, the ending is possibly the most exciting part of the book. I leave it to my readers to see if they agree!

God bless and thank you for accompanying me on my writing journey!

P.S. Apologies for my bulldog's snoring in the background.
