Shake it Off

When Jesus sent out His disciples on their first evangelistic tour, He provided them with a strategy to deal with the resistance and rejection they were bound to encounter in some cities (Luke 9:5). Jesus knew that such mistreatment could interfere with their ability to focus on and prepare for the next town and assignment. Therefore, He advised them to shake it off. Holding onto sadness, pain, or mistreatment by others can hinder your effectiveness and prevent you from obtaining God's promises. To move forward unhindered, you must adopt the same mindset as Jesus (Luke 23:1-34) and Stephen (Acts 7:54-59) and forgive. Giving the situation to God is the only way to move forward and carry out your ministry effectively.

Luke 9:1-5 "Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. And He said to them, "Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece. Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them."

Luke 23:34 – "And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do." And they divided His garments and cast lots."

Acts 7:54-60 – "When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, "Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!" Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord, and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of the young man named Saul. And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." "Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice," "Lord, do not charge them with this sin." And when he had said this, he fell asleep."

Here is My Forgiveness Checklist:

1.     How do I feel when I hear the name of the person or organization in question?

2.     How do I react when someone speaks kindly or negatively about someone who harmed me?

3. What emotions do I experience, and how do I respond immediately when I encounter someone who has wronged me in the past?

You haven't moved on if you still feel anxious, choked up, or angry. Take your problems to the Lord and trust He will heal your heart. On our journey to promise, we must let go of the past and trust God to make things right in the end (Isaiah 54:17; Romans 8:28). God sees everything and is faithful to work everything together for our good, even the adverse events in our lives. So, don't dwell on the past. Instead, leave it with God and focus on your future (Philippians 3:14).

Here is a  Sample Prayer on Forgiveness:

Lord, I acknowledge that holding onto unforgiveness is a sin. I desire to live a life close to you and free from sin. Father, I repent for the sin of unforgiveness, bitterness, malice, and the anger I have held in my heart towards (name the person you need to forgive). Lord, I ask you, Holy Spirit, to help me let it go and release it all. Please cleanse me from all unrighteousness and heal my heart and emotions. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen! (Reference verses: Psalm 147:3; 1 John 1:9-10; Ephesians 4:31-32)

Now, pray for the person who has offended you.

Dear Lord, You are the only one who knows our hearts. You can see the root and reason behind the actions or inactions of (name the person) towards me. Today, I humbly ask for Your mercy upon them. Please forgive them and help them trust You for healing and forgiveness. Enable them to see themselves in the light of Your truth, and grant them the grace to embrace the love and freedom that can only be found in You. I ask all of this in the name of Jesus, Amen! (Matthew 5:44)

Suppose you find yourself in a situation where legal justice is necessary. In that case, it is important to continue to pray for yourself and the offender. Ask the Lord for guidance, favor, and the right attorney. It is essential to remember that God cares about everyone involved and has appointed ministers of authority to protect and execute justice on earth (Romans 13:1-3). Remember that God is the ultimate Judge and always stands for what is right (Isaiah 30:18). Therefore, be courageous and accept His favor. Remember that Jesus Christ will be with you in court and is the best defense attorney available (1 John 2:1).
