Headlines have been loud, messy, and heavy—and that’s exactly why we open with clarity about what’s harmful, what’s not reflective of authentic faith, and why naming truth matters for our personal growth. From there, we shift the lens to the battles closer to home: the tug-of-war between who we were, who we say we want to be, and the choices that actually move us forward.
We also ask the harder questions: Are your goals truly yours, or are they auditions for other people’s approval? If you’re an orange, why submit to apples-to-apples comparisons? We talk boundaries, unique standards, and the courage to avoid crab-bucket traps that pull you back into comfort and conformity. Mindset sits at the core. Most people change desires and even values before they change behavior; flipping that script requires a renewed mind, tighter inputs, and proof through daily practice. Purpose sharpens when your actions align with identity, not applause.
If you’re ready to trade vague hopes for clear steps—and to choose the narrow path that leads to real life—this one’s for you. Listen, share with a friend who needs a reset, and tell us the one specific

What's up everybody? Welcome back to the all-ma-purpose pod for an all-purpose life. In the words of a great philosopher, can't stop, won't stop. Get back in the game. I'm your coach, Mr. Youod morning, everybody. Welcome back to the All-Purpose Pod for an all-purpose life. In case you didn't know, I'm your host and your coach, Mr. You. Guys, thank you so much for joining us again wherever you are, wherever you're listening to us from, however, you're hearing our podcast this morning. Thank you for making a Call Me Mr. You part of your morning, part of your day, and part of your life. We really appreciate it. Lots to discuss this morning, guys. So let's go ahead and jump right on in. Before we get into the episode and the content that I intended to share with you guys over the air today, I want to take a little time to just discuss a couple of things real quick. Now I know that we are in a situation of sorts where we are seeing some things that are unprecedented in our society, some things that are mind-blowing to us to a degree, some images, particularly yesterday at our nation's capital. Now, normally I don't talk about politics on our podcast. I try to keep it on a personal and professional and spiritual development level. But these are things that do affect us, and they affect the people. And as you know, and I've discussed it many times, I'll say it again: this is the People's Podcast, and you guys are the people. So what bothers you and what concerns you is something I care about. So just as a quick precursor, you want to call it a manifesto, I'll call it a PSA, however you want to describe it, just to be clear about what's going on and who I am and how I'm intending to represent what's taking place. Just to be clear. So my assessment of yesterday's events are as follows. Just to be clear: any act of white supremacy, domestic terrorism, the dramatic recreation of George Floyd's death on the steps of the Capitol, and anything else that you viewed that looks like something out of the fallen movie franchise, is not about Jesus of the Bible. It's not about Christianity. It's evil, it's bigoted, it's hate-filled, it's selfish, it's hypocritical in many ways. And it definitely, and I can see that from our social media and a lot of the things that we're hearing from you guys on your social media platforms, it definitely reveals the clear inequity in law enforcement and how people are treated. People have been crying and dying and peacefully protesting about this kind of thing for years. People clearly are not listening. What we saw yesterday was deplorable, despicable, it was horrendous. And it does not represent people who follow Jesus, even though we saw Jesus flags out there. It does not represent a particular political party either. It represents a group of people that have ideals and standards that don't match with our faith, our core beliefs. It's not representative of the people who believe in God, who are Christians, and who are Christ's followers. So a lot of the things that you saw, I hope, and as we are praying for the country, praying for its health and safety and development, I hope that no one comes to the conclusion that people who follow Christ are engaged in this kind of behavior and find this to be anything worth being involved or attached with. So just to be clear, if you haven't been praying, but if you are in a position where you can pray for our country, please do so. By all means, I'll be doing the same. You know, yesterday, a lot of things went on yesterday, and your news feed will show a lot of that. There was a lot going on in the nation's capital, as I highlighted a little bit. A lot was going on in Georgia, to be honest. A lot was going on all across the world, but you didn't get a chance to hear about much of that just because of what was going on yesterday. But a good friend of mine's we it wasn't really a reuniting as much because we have been in contact, but we've been friends for over 30 years. I know if he listened today and he hears that, he's gonna be like, It's been 30 years. Yes, man, it's been three decades. But we had a nice little chat yesterday. Yesterday was his birthday. I like when they embarrass him and put him on blast out here, because that's not what we do. But we have a real good talk about some old times, and I got a chance to wish him happy birthday personally, and just to catch up after 30 years. Just talk about some things that have changed in our lives, how we've grown, what's going on with our families, how we're looking at business and work and life, and just things of that nature. So it was really an incredible time just to connect with him and just to catch up. We had a lot of old stories. I know some of my blogs uh you'll see where I share stories about my past in the music business, where I've shared about times where you know I had an independent record deal and I was making records, and I shared some of that in some brief details in some of my blogs. You can go to theycallmeistery.com to kind of read up on some of those. But we talked about long nights in the studio and working on records and performing all over the tri-state area and beyond. Things that, you know, tend to go with the music business as it was back in the 90s. But one of the big takeaways that we had was just how much things change. You know, in my opinion, we talk about change here a lot on They Call Me Mr. You, and I don't think we're gonna stop talking about that because change is really inevitable. It is a part of our life that we cannot avoid. It's an area that we must embrace. It's difficult for a lot of people, it's difficult for me in some areas to embrace changes. I'm the kind of person that's I'm used to I'm that kind of personality, I'm used to routine. I doing things when they have to be done. I don't like breaks in the rhythm and the routine of my schedule. And I'm just honest about that. But I recognize the need to embrace change. And in my opinion, we didn't discuss it on my phone call with my friend last night, but in my opinion, I think we die a little faster if we don't embrace change. See, we know some we know some people, we have some common friends and people that we know in our personal lives, where we live right now geographically, who they are so stuck in what they used to do. They're so stuck in their past. They're so stuck in the way things were, the way their mama said things needed to be, or the way their grandmother said it has to be. If it's good enough for my grandmammy, it's good enough for me. Just that kind of mindset. But I think we die so much faster when we don't recognize the need for change and embrace it. Not trying to sound morbid on the podcast this morning. I'm just trying to help us out a little bit. Help myself out as I'm talking to myself as well, but I'm talking to the people. I'm talking to you guys. I think we really spend a lot of time bucking and fighting against change. Perhaps you can find a parallel with what happened at the Capitol and what I'm saying this morning. I'm not trying to make one, but perhaps it's a bridge that they used to see. But we often buck and fight against change, and I think we perish that much more rapidly because we refuse to allow ourselves to engage in the thing that may help us become better, help us to grow, help us to, in a way, evolve. I really believe that we missed that. And if I was to put that on a broad scope, to take away from my phone call with my friend, I think that we hasten to an uninspiring, unfulfilled end, and we learn little about ourselves and what we had in our hands when we had it in our hands, if you know what I mean. So a lot of our conversation yesterday on the phone was about how we've grown, how we've changed, how there's certain things that we used to love, now we don't love it anymore. There's certain things we used to do as a routine, now we don't do it anymore. There's certain things that we chased after, maybe even perhaps lusted after. Now we don't chase after it or lust after it anymore. It's inevitable. Things are going to change. A lot of people that we know, people that I know, are afraid of change. It sends a chill down their spine to think about changing something and being uncomfortable. And I think that's where we find ourselves as we head into this episode and we're talking about what I wanted to discuss with you guys today. That phone call, my friend, was amazing. Bro, I love you. I appreciate you. Happy birthday again. I'm so proud that you're still a part of my life and that we're still connected. I can't wait for more awesome chats like we had last night. So, as we get into the podcast episode, I wanted to run some thoughts by you guys and perhaps see if I can try to help you out today on our podcast. I try to help you out every single week, but this is a different time that we're in right now. As you already know, unless you've been under a rock or in a cave somewhere, we have started a brand new year, 2021. Now I know that most people look at that as an opportunity to do something new, to change, change their hair, change their look, change their jobs, change their friendship circles, just do something new, more productive. In their mind, something better. Well, it's 2021. It's that time of the year where we attempt to convince ourselves that this year is going to be different. This year is going to be better. We're not going to make the same mistakes. We resolve to do better. Resolve as in the word resolution. The U.S. News and World Report had a poll from last year about the failure rates of New Year's resolutions. Can you guess what that number might have been? What percentage of failure rate there is for a New Year's resolution? According to this report, by mid-February, I did say February, the the month after New Year's. By mid-February, a month or less, the resolve, whether it be to lose weight, be more charitable, change our diet, be nicer to each other, whatever our resolution is. The failure rate is 80% in a month or less. That resolution falls flat in less than 30 days. By a rate of 80%. That was a poll from last year now. I don't know what it would be if the poll was taken this year or 2020. You know, you don't have to look far to find an expert that have an explanation as to why these resolutions fall flat. You know, I like we shared on previous episodes, one of the reasons is because of time management is such an issue. And for many of the same reasons, these resolutions that we decide to do when that ball drops on January the 1st, why they fall flat? And it's going to take us into our episode today. Perhaps even a child can understand that, and that's totally fine. But as adults, we fail to have a grip on that idea. The desire to change is where any real change starts. If change is forced upon you, you're gonna buck, you're gonna fight, you're gonna kick, you're gonna resist this. It was unwanted, you didn't ask for it, you didn't request it, it just happened. If I can say anything about 2020, then there's a lot of good things that I can say, as well as a lot of things that are not so great. But one thing I can say, a lot of people who I've known, who we've heard about, who we listened to speak, who shared experiences, a lot of change happened that they were not prepared for. Nor did they invite it. It happened. Unannounced. You ever got an unannounced knock at your door? Or a phone call you didn't expect? It's kind of a weird feeling. It's unplanned. Maybe you went to the grocery store you and you ran into somebody who you haven't seen in years. It's very it's weird. To some degree it's tense and exhilarating, but to some degree it's just it's strange. But where any real change is going to take place, there has to be a desire to change. If you're a nasty person, wanting to change is very commendable. If you're the kind of person that can't pass on that next big deal, that great opportunity to buy that item or make that purchase, a desire to be more frugal is admirable. But that's not where resolutions like we know them to be crash and burn. Time management is a huge issue in why a lot of resolutions fall flat. There's some other reasons as well. One reason, they're not specific enough. Your resolutions are not specific enough. One of the most popular resolutions is the one where people say, I want to lose weight this year. That phrase or that declaration, I want to lose weight this year, is not specific. It's a general statement. It's just like saying, I want to get rid of some old friends this year. It's general. Who are these friends? How much weight do you want to lose? A goal without a plan is just a wish. You know, our childhood cartoons. Anybody remember the c cartoons from back in the day? Whether it be Buzz and Woody, Porky Pig. All our childhood cartoons. You know, they sold us a bill of goods. You know that they got us up in here wishing upon a star, hoping that we lose 50 pounds. If we just believe hard enough. And they got our heads all jacked up. That's not accurate. That's not how you make progress. That's not how you meet goals. By hopes and wish. We need to be as consistent in transforming our bodies as we were with what we put into them in the first place. That was unhealthy. One of the reasons that resolutions fall flat, especially in the new year, is because they're not specific enough. I really hope I'm helping somebody out here this morning. The key is consistency. If you want to lose weight, as an example, I know I'm standing on weight loss today, but if you have a quest to be healthy and you want to lose a specific amount of pounds, number one, you need to know the amount. How many pounds do you want to lose? Next, know if the goal is a feasible and physically safe goal. If you want to lose 75 pounds, is that safe for you to lose 75 pounds in the time frame you may want to lose that weight? And then right there you gotta think about how much time are you giving yourself to meet this goal. Must you consult with a physician in order to take these steps? There's a lot to think about. Not just say I'm gonna lose some pounds this year. It's best to have a specific roadmap on how much pounds you're gonna lose and how you're gonna get there. What's gonna be the process? I'm talking about every single day, one day at a time. What are you gonna do every day in order to meet your goal to lose X amount of pounds? You can't think weeks and weeks and months and months into advance. It's good to know what your plan is at the end and know it in the beginning, but every single day there's a process. Every single day there is something for you to do on the course of completing that goal. And this is just this isn't just about weight, this is about anything you can apply to this, guys. You gotta have a specific goal. Amounts, roadmaps, details, directions. It doesn't sound like a lot of fun, but that's what we get tripped up at. The more vague the goal is, the easier it is to walk away from it. The terms are loose. Uh, I might do a little bit of wedding tomorrow. Uh, I might not. I might sleep in until 11. Uh hey guys, it's Mr. You. You know how much Mr. You loves his coffee. I think I found the answer for all you guys that are health conscious but still love coffee. StrongCoffeeCompany.com forward slash discount forward slash TCMY. The link is also in the show notes. Check out Strong Coffee. Let me know what you think. And it just loose. And it always opens the door for the eventual excuse. Well, I had a lot going on today. I'll get back on the bike tomorrow. Will you gonna happen? If you don't have a set goal, set terms, specific guidelines of what you're gonna do to meet whatever set goal is. It's not about weight, guys. Whatever that goal is you want to set for this year. Maybe you are a nasty person and you want to be nicer to people. How do you go about doing that? Maybe you want to be more charitable this year, as opposed to years past. How do you do that? Specific goals, a specific roadmap, a set of instructions for yourself, a discipline. There's that word again. A discipline that you follow every single day until you meet your goal. One of the things that I talk about a lot on the podcast, and it bears repeating. I'm a big believer in personal, spiritual, and professional development. Because I am, a lot of what I read and listen to are all because of the goal that I have for myself. So there's certain things that I will not read. I will not listen to. There's certain company you will not be able to find me in anymore because it goes count or runs counter to the goal that I have for myself that I have to meet. My dreams are non-negotiable, as many of you guys are. We gotta have specific goals, disciplines, guidelines, roadmaps for where we want to be. We can't have vague goals. They need to be clear and plain. So there's no out for us to try to avoid accomplishing what we have to do every single day on a regular basis until we meet those goals. Another reason why resolutions do crash and burn so often. Another reason is because these goals are more about other people and rarely about us at all. The individual person. Or you'll be more likable. Or more friendable, if that's a word. All these voices telling us what they think and advising us, all we have to do is this. And this is the result we'll get. X plus Y equals Z, right? Everyone looking at their favorite celebrity and trying to mimic what is perfor portrayed as beautiful and attainable. It requires us to evaluate ourselves without the spotlight of popularity or some kind of a need for outside applause. We gotta ask ourselves, is this is this goal good for us? Whatever the resolution is, is this a good thing? Is it good for me? It could be good for Mike or Susie, but is it good for me? Does this help me achieve my purpose in life? Take a look, take a quick scan of the goals you have for this year so far. You want to call them resolutions? That's fine. It's not a word that I use, except on this podcast episode, but look at your resolutions. Do they help you achieve the purpose in life that you have for yourself? Are you aware of what your purpose even is? Or does it push you into a deeper hole that is full of self-deprecation and low self-esteem? Are you in a comparison foot race? Are you trying to keep up with the Joneses, but you don't want to admit it? Are these goals helpful and healthy? Do they get you to the place where you are operating in the purpose that you are designed to operate in? Or are you just living, just chilling, taking it day by day, living by the seat of your pants? What are these goals doing for you, the individual person? Are these goals more about pleasing other people? Are these goals about enhancing who you need to be? See, it's insanity to me. This is a personal opinion here. It's insanity that we can recognize ourselves to be oranges and allow ourselves to be placed in a position where apples are compared to apples. If you're not an apple, you can't put yourself in that place to be compared apples to apples. You're an orange. For you as the individual person to understand and embrace the uniqueness about who you are. See, everybody around you might be using regular octane. They out there pumping 87. But you're different. You might require a premium in your tank because of what you're carrying. Because of the makeup of who you are. You might need 91. 87 might not do. You might need 91. We gotta understand who we are, what makes us unique, but still understand our need to fulfill our purpose. It's gonna require some time, so you might be a little bit lonely. Because the masses around you are doing the same things, thinking the same ways, following the same steps, moving with the same trends, but it's not working for you. You want to be loved and cared about and appreciated, you want to have friends, you want to have followers, but you're battling against something. You can feel the pressure. It's like you're pushing against something that's not natural. Something that is not the normal for you. I got a vehicle that requires a tune-up every 30,000 miles, but it costs over$500. Mainly because of the products, the intricate parts, where they're placed in the vehicle, that kind of thing. Do you think I would let an inexperienced mechanic make that repair or make or do that service for me? Of course not. But there are people who would do that. And I don't mean about your car, I mean about your life. I know people who will stand up in a minute and say, you know what, I'm precious, I'm special, I'm loved by God, I'm blessed, I'm highly favored. I'd hear I hear that stuff all the time. But most of y'all don't even know what that means. You know what it means to be highly favored, to be blessed. You may be all that in a bag of chips in your mind, but you're gonna have to learn how to treat yourself that way if that's if that's so. If you're if you all these things that you say, who you keep company with, what you invest in yourself with, who you hang around, who you listen to, who you speak to, what you internalize, what you don't, what you receive into your life and your thoughts and what you don't, what you entertain, who you entertain, all those things are gonna change then. You can't do the same thing that everybody else is doing, and then sit here and tell me or try to convince me or convince others that you're unique, you're different, you're special. You got something going on that people don't understand. What's up everybody? It's Mr. You. You know I love hearing from all of our viewers and listeners. You guys have some great questions. I love it. On every episode of the podcast, they call me Mr. You, right at the top of our show notes is a way you can text me directly. It's called fan mail. Send a text to me anytime in or out of our shows with questions, feedback, topic ideas, or some kind of encouragement for the coach. And I'll respond back to you at the very next episode of our show. I'm making you a part of our show. So send a text, show some love, ask a question, fan mail. Thanks for supporting us again. We love you, we appreciate you. Have a great day. Enjoy the music, coach out. We let relatives and professors and people who claim to be experts in supernatural things and And and so-called coaches and stuff. Tell us where we should work and tell us what kind of job is best for us. And tell us how to manage marital affairs in your household, how to manage your family, how to manage your business ventures and all kinds of matters. We let them speak into our life. And it's tragic because their skill set is basically set on us, is built on assumption, presupposition, unfulfilled dreams in their own life. And, believe it or not, don't shoot the messenger, and even jealousy. Oh yeah. Even jealousy. Don't forget the mentality of the crab. Don't forget about that. A crab, two crabs in a bucket, don't need a lid. Because they'll never get out. Because one will always pull the other one down. Even to the point of crippling them to make sure they never leave. We got people like that in our life that try to hold us in bondage. They are young people who I have attempted to mentor recently. Not to call their names of anything. They may be listening, they may not. But the one thing that I know happened, and it's pretty sad, it's pretty sad to think about, is that they allow other people to determine for them where they should go. They didn't decide for themselves. They heard something about this, or they heard something about this process, or they heard something about this book or this author. And they decided that they weren't going to do it because of what somebody said who's not invested in their future, who's not invested in their personal and professional growth. They let somebody else, a crab, pull them back into the bucket, even crippling them to make sure they never leave. If we don't know who we are at our core, it's so easy for us to accept someone else's depiction of us. It might sound favorable, it might line up with our desire to be comfortable and accepted, but it's still somebody else's opinion. And we allow ourselves to be ruled and governed by that. We allow somebody who is inexperienced as a mechanic to work on our precious vehicle. And they have no idea what they're doing. The last reason that a lot of the resolutions that we have fall flat is that we're trying to change something, but our behaviors remain the same. Think about that now. One of the reasons why our resolutions fall flat and we don't accomplish those goals that we set for ourselves at the beginning of the year is because we're trying to change something or create change and our behaviors are still the same. This is all about mindset. That's the place where we are conquered the most. And where we find the most victory more often than not. It's in our mind. That's the battleground that we battle every day. That's where we fight. That's where we lose. That's where we fail. That's where we create conflicts that aren't even there. We create mountains that don't even exist. They'll say, I'm not a salesman. That's not what I do. I don't like talking to people. None of those things are true. We talk to folks all the time. We sell ourselves all the time. We convince folks of things all the time. We recommend things to people all the time. That's sales. We've been doing it all our lives. Consider that if you say, I'm not a good salesperson, you've been doing it your entire life. But it's really about mindset. There's a quote by Arthur Blair Enns. And it says, The truth about the average human being is that regardless of what he claims to want, he will avoid the difficult decisions and the undesirable tasks, even if they represent the path to the outcome or future he desires. The proven reality is that most people will change their desires, even their values, before they will change their behavior. Hear that. Matter of fact, I'm gonna repeat that one more time for those in the back. The truth about the average human being is that regardless of what he claims to want, he will avoid the difficult decisions and the undesirable task, even if they represent the path to the outcome or future he desires. The proven reality is that most people will change their desires, even their values, before they will change their behavior. Wow, wow, and double wow. That's not truth. I don't know what it is. That's all about mindset. The reason why these resolutions don't work in a fair way, you can look around, you can blame folks, but the reality is we refuse to change our behavior. We'll even change the goal. We'll move the finish line around. Anything but change the way we act, change the way we think, change the way we operate. Like I said a little while ago, I mentioned several students in the past, still do. And I think the majority of them are exceptional, sharp, highly talented. I've had paying clients that were intelligent, fully functioning adults, great ideas, sharp minds, and they all struggle with some of the same things. In two spectrums, two polar opposites in the world where they are, still struggling with the same things. That's because it's universal. Constantly changing your major, not showing what you want to do when you get out of college. That's a real thing for a lot of people. But why is that happening? It's about mindset. Hoping the right job is the answer to your quest for purpose. That's about mindset. Letting others decide how you should invest, where you should go to college, how many children you should have. Wow, you kidding me? You let other people decide this? That's a real thing. People actually do that. They get input from people in their lives about how many children they should have. And where they should live. Where on the map should you live? Where should you buy a house? What kind of community? People actually let I don't mean just college students, I'm talking about fully functional adults as well. Let other people decide these things for them. They struggle with finding something they're good at, but realize they're not passionate about it. They're essentially leaving their life to chance. We discussed that on previous podcasts before. Yeah, you're good at it, but are you passionate about it? That's the precursor to a wasted life, to an unfulfilled life. If you're not passionate about it, why are you investing so much into it? It's the equivalent to taking a big brown paper bag with a hole in the bottom of it and putting everything that's precious to you in it. What do you think is gonna happen? Another challenge that they have is that they're stuck on neutral. They got an MBA in asking questions and proving points and letting their voices be heard, but they got a GED in self-evaluation, a GED in doing research. And GED is not it's not it's not derogatory in the statement, but it's a level that is not as learned, not as evolved or experienced as the NBA. It's all about information. If you know that you're in one of these places, know that it's about mindset, it's why the behavior is not changing, it's about mindset. It's it's it's crazy to me, at least in my mind, to be on a life's path to obtain something that at the end you don't even really want that. If you don't get nothing else out of this podcast today, you want to be thinking about, okay, where are you in this whole scheme of what you got going on? All the investments you've made, all the connections in the networks that you're a part of, all the people that are speaking into your life. Maybe even the crab that's in the bucket with you. Where do you want to be? Do you see yourself as someone who is in need of regular octane? You just need 87 in your tank and you'll be alright, or do you recognize that you need a little something more? You need a little 91 in your tank. Are you at a place where you're comparing yourself to everybody around you? And that's how you determine what success looks like because of what you see around you. There's a passage in scripture that I love. It's in Matthew chapter 7, and it says that the path to destruction is wide, many people follow it, but the path that leads to life is narrow, very few find it. Hear me on that, guys. Hear what I'm saying on that. I'm not trying to teach you the Bible, I'm trying to get you to understand a certain principle. The path to destruction is broad, it's wide, it's large. Many people follow it. Apply that where you will, but many people follow it. The path that leads to life is narrow. Unique, authentic, genuine, humble, willing people. Very few find it. I hope you heard that because there was something important in there for you. Do you want what you're telling everybody else you want? Is the courses you're on right now reflective of that desire, of that goal? See, the battle's not your social media platform. It's not with the haters. It's all in your mind. Are you willing to overcome that mountain to get to what you are truly purposed to have in life? See, without a renewed mind, how do you expect the behaviors that to change? You got an unrenewed mind. You're gonna have behaviors that reflect that. You can't expect anything different. I'm not saying give up on having resolutions. I'm not saying give up on making changes in your life. But all you have is a wish and a plan, but you don't have any goals, and these things are not together, plans and goals, you can't expect to see any radical change, and you're gonna see what 80% from a couple of years ago are seeing. Your resolutions fall flat. They fail within a month. They fail because we treat the symptoms rather than address the source of the problem. Our refusal to move off of that unfruitful position and embrace a different approach is what's causing us to be unfruitful and unsuccessful in this life. That's what's causing that. So this year, maybe for the first time, maybe we can opt to change our minds, and perhaps our behaviors will follow. Just something to think about.
