Show Notes

Affirmative action has been a heavily debated topic since the Civil Rights Act passed in the 1960s. It is an emotional, loaded term for parents that are heavily invested in their kids’ education. The legislative battlegrounds on affirmative action this fall is in California, where voters will decide the outcome of Proposition 16.

We dive into affirmative action, the major misconceptions in understanding how it works, and the emotional triggers that come with the topic. We touch on why Chinese Americans have recently flipped their stance on affirmative action (hint: WeChat) and the immigration patterns that have contributed to a population heavily subscribed to the benefits of a meritocracy.

We are joined by guest Dr. Oiyan Poon, researcher and faculty affiliate at Colorado State University. Her research focuses on the racial politics of college access, affirmative action, and Asian Americans.
