At this point in Hannah’s cancer journey, we entered an idyllic period. She had completed all her radiation treatments and had taken 33 out of 42 scheduled doses of the chemo drug Temodar, before her platelet levels dropped dangerously low and her oncologist said she had had enough. We knew that there were more treatments to come, but for now, we were able to focus on fully living life.
During that period, I sent very few email updates to those who were following Hannah’s journey … In fact, the next one was not until May 6th … so that will be our next bonus episode of this podcast. And going forward, these bonus episodes will no longer be daily, but I’ll be sharing them as significant events occurred during that battle sixteen years ago. Thank you for walking this journey along with me through these episodes, and I’ll be back in touch with you soon!
Thank you for joining me for another bonus episode of the While We're Waiting podcast in this year-long series in which I share our family’s experiences as our teenage daughter Hannah battled glioblastoma brain cancer from February 2008 through February 2009. My desire is to process through the events of those twelve months with the perspective that 16 years has brought … and point people to hope in Jesus along the way.

After two months of balancing the twin burdens of daily chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the news that they had come to an end sooner than expected (even if only temporarily) was reason to rejoice! It was such a relief to think of getting back to some sense of normalcy in our family. Even sixteen years later, I clearly remember the relief we felt, knowing that our load had been lightened.

If you’re a regular listener to the podcast, you are probably aware that my husband Brad had a near-fatal incident with an ATV a few months ago right before Christmas. To mark this special 200th episode of the While We’re Waiting podcast, he joins me to discuss what happened that day, share a little bit about his recovery process, and talk about how God has used it to sharpen his purpose going forward. I’m pleased to share our conversation with you today …

At this point in treatment, we could not have foresesen how much of a battle Hannah would have maintaining her platelet levels. Low platelets caused ongoing issues for her the entire year she was sick. But at this time, we had no reason to believe this was anything other than a little speed bump that would quickly be resolved.

Verses about joy abound in the Bible, and I'd like to share ten of my favorites with you in today's bonus episode. As you listen, I want to draw your attention to how many of these verses have the word "joy" juxtaposed with grief, tears, trials, and affliction. Maybe I've drawn to verses like these because of my own experience, and that's why these are my favorites. Or maybe it's because that's how God so often seems to work ... allowing us to experience heartbreaking sorrow, but always following it up with a restoration of joy.

It was so important to Hannah to be able to take her end-of-course geometry exam on this date sixteen years ago! When she got home that day, she described feeling like her desk and her chair were tilted as she took the test, and she had to hold on tight to keep from sliding out. It wasn't a complaint on her part ... just an observation. It was hard for us to imagine how these radiation and chemo treatments were impacting her brain ... but her attitude remained positive and she never complained.

By April 21, 2008, Hannah had been undergoing radiation treatments five days a week and taking an oral chemotherapy drug daily since mid-March. The intensity of these ongoing treatments was finally beginning to take a toll, as you will hear from the email update I sent on this date sixteen years ago ...

Hannah was a very private person and gave us very few hints into what was going on in her mind during her cancer battle. These poems from her poetry anthology are such a treasure because they give us just a little bit of insight. And while my heart breaks over the declarations of survival in these poems, which she clearly ascribed to herself, I am comforted by the knowledge that she accomplished everything listed in the "Well Done" poem. God's purpose for her life has been fulfilled, and for that we are grateful.

Today's episode features a presentation on sibling loss from last fall's Our Hearts Are Home conference, led by my daughter Bethany Sullivan. My husband Brad and I also make an appearance in her presentation, and you’ll hear a very honest discussion between the three of us about things we did right and things we did wrong as we continue to parent her through her grief. It’s a live presentation in a church, so the audio is not quite as good as if it were recorded in a studio, but hopefully that won’t be too much of an issue for you. This is an episode you’ll want to listen to yourself first, then maybe share with your children to open up lines of communication about their own grief. I hope it is a blessing to you.

Do you remember being a child alone in your bedroom at night? I remember that I always had to sleep with my door open ... I felt so alone in the darkness if my door was shut. I think I found a lot of comfort in just hearing my parents' voices in the living room as I was drifting off to sleep. But what about those dark times in our lives when God seems absent ... when we just can't hear Him or feel His presence? Today's episode discusses this experience.

Weekly bloodwork was an essential part of monitoring Hannah's response to the radiation and chemotherapy she was undergoing. With only eight more radiation treatments and fifteen more doses of chemotherapy to go, she was "sailing through" according to the our nurse. However, we could see that these things were beginning to take a toll.

Hannah was a very private person, and always shunned the spotlight. At first, she didn't even want anyone to know that she had cancer, but understood that people needed to know so they could pray for her. She didn't want a CaringBridge site while she was battling cancer, but didn't mind me sending the emails which chronicled her journey. So it's interesting to me that her story has been shared to thousands of people through the While We're Waiting ministry. And I don't think she would mind a bit.

Early on after Hannah went to Heaven, I often heard other parents who had lost children talk about how much they worried about people forgetting about their children. And I remember thinking to myself that I would never be that way ... I certainly didn't want people to forget about Hannah, but for me personally, that was not a huge concern. I knew I wouldn't forget her, and at the time that's all that really mattered to me.
Well, now it's over fifteen years later, and I must admit that those kinds of thoughts do creep up on me from time to time. It's become a little more important to me that people remember not just that she lived, but the things that made her Hannah.
Thus, this episode listing Ten Things I'd Like People to Remember About Hannah ...

Several years ago, I spent a week sitting in school workshops. A large part of the presentation was on the "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" and one of the main topics had to do with paradigm shifts. As part of his introduction, the presenter posed a question to the group, "What is something that has happened in your life that led to a paradigm shift?" A few people shared stories of events in their lives that had led to significant change.
I didn't volunteer to share, but if I had, I would have said, "When my teenage daughter was diagnosed with cancer." And the whole paradigm shifted again when she went to Heaven a year later. Today's bonus episode lists some paradigm-shifting insights.

One of my favorite books when I was young was titled "Joni: An Unforgettable Story". It chronicled the life of Joni Eareckson Tada after she broke her neck in a diving accident at the age of 18 and became a paraplegic. Joni is now 74 years old, and has battled breast cancer, and endures chronic "jaw-splitting" pain. Yet she continues to serve God faithfully from her wheelchair. In today's episode, I discuss another brief excerpt from another one of her books which has been an encouragement to me as I ponder the mysteries of God's sovereignty.

How did Hannah transform from a world-class worrier to a fearless warrior? The only answer is through her faith in God. Her belief that her storm was fully under His control removed all her fear.
