Audio Technical Difficulties on Couples Table
Speaker 1Hello and welcome. My name is Tom and.
Speaker 2I'm Heather.
Speaker 1And you're sitting at the Couples Table, the.
Speaker 2Couples Table is a live stream podcast here on this channel. Join us for better or worse.
Speaker 1For richer or poorer.
Speaker 2In sickness and in hell On.
Speaker 1Thursday instead of Friday this week.
Speaker 2Yes, because tomorrow we will not be home.
Speaker 1The mic is pulling down on the thingies there.
Speaker 2That's why I wore black.
Speaker 1I had to wear a heavier shirt. Okay, so I'm going to check the audio real quick to see if we have audio.
Speaker 2This was put on the DJR mics at 1.02, so.
Speaker 1I'm not 100% sure that.
Speaker 2Do we have?
Speaker 1I don't know what Do we?
Speaker 2have audio. Are we on?
Speaker 1We have audio. I don't actually know if it's these mics, it might just be the camera's microphone.
Speaker 2Oh serious.
Speaker 1I'm not sure. I can't tell because I messed audio up like two minutes before we started the stream and I don't know.
Speaker 2So yeah, Well, someone will tell us.
Speaker 1It sounds too echoey to me, Reverby. Oh for it to be this yeah, so oh man, you're gonna go in there well, I just need to see what's happening with audio okay.
Speaker 2Well, this is gonna be a fun stream. While tom is over there behind the camera, we're just gonna jump in. Ernesto, hello and happy thursday. I wonder which mics you'll be using. Okay, so here's what happened. Right Yesterday, I went live for the YouTube huddle up and Tom was there and we used these mice. These are the DJI.
Speaker 1Mic 2.
Speaker 2Mic 2. And it was great, except I am running low on USB ports slots and basically I didn't have the slot that we needed. So Tom has an adapter and he was like okay, we're done with the stream, I will save this adapter and put it right here in a safe space so that we can use it for the couples table tomorrow. And he forgot where that safe space is.
Speaker 1Yeah, something's wrong and I don't know what. We might just have to both use your microphone.
Speaker 2Okay.
Speaker 1I'm not sure. I can't figure it out.
Speaker 2No, the DJI mic is picking up. I don't know.
Speaker 1Is it?
Speaker 2We hear and see you all.
Speaker 1I mean the way would be for me to go out here and talk and see if you can hear me.
Speaker 2Can you? Is this, it sounds very weird to me can you? Hear me am I not coming through? Am I? Is this the mic that I am talking into? I'm going to talk straight into this mic. Or am I being picked up by another mic somewhere else, which is weird because it says streamer x hdmi on ecamm. So I don't know what else it would be, but so you know.
Speaker 1Okay, yeah, it is using these.
Speaker 2It is.
Speaker 1It is, but it's weird. It doesn't sound as good as it should. So I don't know. But it is picking this up because it picked me up out in the hallway.
Speaker 2Well, if it sounds bad to the point where no, it's not unusable, it. Well, if it sounds bad to the point where no, it's not unusable, it just doesn't sound if you're listening to the audio only version. Sorry, sorry, all right. Well, let's catch up with the comments. Rustic casey mode on the house. Uh, jeremy hubble, this thumbnail is cool, tom, either looking guilty or dismissive. I actually use the same uh base of the thumbnail for my video I put out on my game.
Speaker 1I was like yeah, it looks familiar.
Speaker 2Which we will talk about in a second. The RealPelRoom is here checking in. Hello, hello Guild's here. Hi, homesickmac, call me Cubby Greetings. See you all five by five. I don't know what that is. Dj, dj, dj. Our mic is picking up. Heather is quiet. Heather's mic not picking up. Morty, tap the mic and let's see if it makes a terrible sound.
Speaker 1I can't see. The problem is the way the camera is processing audio. Today, tom's mic is working, not Heather's Tom.
Speaker 2on the Streamer X, did you lower the HDMI audio? No HomeSickMac says I'm hearing both of you perfectly, only Tom is louder.
Speaker 1I don't want to grab your microphone on the stream. I hate microphone issues on stream. I got to tell you. I'm so frustrated right now.
Speaker 2He's so uncomfortable.
Speaker 1I'm not having fun, no, just it's fine. It is not fine, though, because we have to talk for an hour and something is just weird. Oh, here we go, here we go, here we go, I might be able to fix it. Chunk, chunk, chunk, chunk. Thank you, dji, for making this very simple and I'm not being sarcastic. That might have sounded sarcastic.
Speaker 2It was not See. Because we're wireless, everyone can hear what you're still saying, even though you're behind the camera.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's weird because we had to run it through the camera. Now it's being run through the cameras, like audio processing, which is another layer of audio processing before it goes into another layer of audio processing, and the streamer X, before it goes into another layer of audio processing, and e-cam, and that's a lot of process. Every one of those is a chance for something to get messed up.
Speaker 2Sounds like you have another mic open besides the DJI mics. Um I mean, no, that's the thing is. That's the echo thing. Yeah, I don't know what the deal is. Well, we can keep it short. Yeah, I'm today so discombobulated.
Speaker 1I want to like restart this is the same people I know I just can't think straight it's fine live streaming.
Speaker 2Everybody can get a little tricky, uh, but aside from that, we will dial in this setup it changes eventually but just up the game on the receiver.
Speaker 1That will work unfortunately, it's not that simple in this setup no, it's not I mean, well, yeah, that would be the same as just boosting that there.
Speaker 2So it's yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1So the reason why that wouldn't work it's all because someone lost a freaking two dollar plastic adapter and you know it would fix everything.
Speaker 2The rcp. Is that true?
Speaker 1yeah, we wouldn't have any of these issues seriously yeah, because we could do plenty of audio. Yeah, no I don't want that huge thing on my desk the only time there's two people in here is one hour a week, so it's not worth it. It's not worth having a big thing that you don't want taking up desk space for one hour a week. It really isn't.
Speaker 1So, yeah, I mean, the big thing that we need to figure out is the Streamer X has multiple audio. It can take multiple audio things. I don't know how to get to do that at the same time. So it can do XLR, it can do wireless, it can do a headset. You have to like, select. Do you want one or the other?
Speaker 2I believe casey moto says the duo would work well, yeah, it's just, it's the roadcaster.
Speaker 1I believe I lost my train of thought. I'm just, I'm just done. Let's just talk about other stuff.
Fixing Audio Technical Issues
Speaker 2Oh, I'm sorry, it's been a very busy it's been a week, guys, let me tell you, yeah, uh, we're just trying to stay above water. Tomorrow we're not gonna be here and that's gonna be fun, but it's like a whole work day of not being here. And then tom had a last minute out of town trip, which I don't know if you're allowed to talk about, but I'm sure you will hear about it once he is there and it's very exciting and is probably relevant to everyone here who is watching.
Speaker 1It would solve some of our problems. Oh really, I mean it'd be way overkill, but yeah.
Speaker 2What are you looking?
Speaker 1at oh, there's something hanging, there's a wire hanging.
Speaker 2I don't know what it was uh, so on the road central app you can control the audio inputs. It's clunky clunky to work with that's fun.
Speaker 1I'm gonna do a little exploring then while we chat okay.
Speaker 2Well, while that's happening, the problem is that we're on these two mics but you can't control them individually, because they are being recognized as one mic input.
Speaker 1I mean you can control them individually on the receiver there.
Speaker 2but oh, what do I know? The?
Speaker 1way the camera is I don't know crap about audio. It's the camera that has not been. Yeah, it was just not.
Speaker 2No Kombucha, not TwitchCon. We thought about going to TwitchCon.
Speaker 1I would like to go. I actually just didn't know it was even happening, right now and scheduling wise.
Speaker 2There's just no way that that was going to be possible they had it in vegas last year and that I was excited to go to, but then they moved it to san diego.
Speaker 1No are you do, you know what's happening oh, I wasn't sure if you knew it. I thought you're trying.
Speaker 2Oh yeah, no, I'm good okay, um, yeah, so they moved into san diego and so we are now going, not because it's in san diego, but I don't know, it's just a lot yeah you're gonna lock me out of my computer, bro, it's okay, we'll just cancel it oh, my god, it's gonna be so bad.
Speaker 2I was trying to install something. As we're live streaming, I have put on my uh password, my computer. I put in three times and I don't want to get locked out of my computer. So here's what I did also yesterday, which has kind of been adding to the to the things. Is I, uh, before the huddle up, I got the notification. That was like, oh, oh, the new OS is available and I was like, oh, I'm going to be good. So I installed it and it really messed things up today. So I loaded up Ecamm.
Speaker 2I don't know why this is affecting Ecamm, but like some of my scenes aren't loading properly, affecting Ecamm, but like some of my scenes aren't loading properly, um, my, I'm having this very weird issue which I can't even. I don't even know if I can describe this properly, but, um, I think everyone here knows, I think everyone here has done this, but we export single frames from our video editor to use as the thumbnail, to use as a thumbnail. So I use final cut pro. I export, um single frames and I was doing that and for some reason, when you open up the frame or the screenshot or the picture or whatever, it is like way darker than it actually is in final cut. Yeah, and that is after I updated the os, the os, and I have no idea what the heck. I don't know if the picture is actually darkened or if preview is just showing it to me.
Speaker 1I don't think the picture is, because if you upload it to Canva it's not, but in preview you can literally see it change from like bright to dark bright to dark.
Speaker 2It just changes the color. It's so weird. It's like as if somebody pushed like the auto darken.
Speaker 1It's almost like the os is trying to like make the pictures look better than they are, but like, please don't, because you want to see what things actually look like so you can edit something in a way that's going to look like what other people see yeah, I have no idea.
Speaker 2So so now it's like, you know, I I don't know. I don't know what I'm looking at because I don't know if it's like, if it's just my computer, or if this actually has photo ways. I don't know, and I don't want to have to, like, import everything to a third party app and then re-export just to confirm that it looks the way that it's such a hassle for something that was so simple. Yeah, like Jeremy says, I can't wait to see what they're about to announce.
Speaker 1Who's the oh?
Speaker 2um, yeah, it's. Uh, you will find out on tuesday, someday soon. Yeah, I don't know. Uh, hey, we're all fine with audio. I believe the main thing is you're here, we're chill with you.
Speaker 1The problem is, my brain gets fixated on things, and so I can't unfix it's like staring at like a broken thing right in the middle of the room.
Speaker 2Tom has the compulsion to fix it, yeah, and he cannot think about anything else until it is fixed yeah yes, I understand it's okay that's what it is so well I have a question for you, tom. Yeah, are we gonna get handles after this?
Speaker 1I have no idea. I'm gonna get a lot of love handles with the amount of handles you've been getting lately, but it would be my last. I won't be able to get one for a while.
Speaker 2I don't know, I don't know, uh, let's see. Well, gil says audio sounds better, so there you go I mean, I'm, I'm very the the really nice thing.
Speaker 1So here's the super cool thing is because we were stuck in this audio situation and someone lost the adapter. Uh, it was very cool that I was able to at all just clip the dji mic thing onto the camera, which had never had a mic clipped onto it ever, because it's a new camera and at least it works to some degree without me having to change anything. So that's cool. Um, now it's just trying to dial in the rest.
Speaker 2We will get there. This has been a journey.
Speaker 1We were going to do it before. The problem was this episode got bumped up, the week was busy and we didn't have time to like do it between now and then. So by next couple's table it should be ironed out.
Speaker 2We just didn't have the time you're not gonna be here next week, so we'll see I'm coming I'm only gone for two days uh, I see there's a beta firmware update for the rcp for virtual inputs.
Speaker 1Only for pc, though yes, they released that today, which is super cool, um, and it will come to mac, but it's basically what people have been asking for since, like, the roadcaster came out, which is you can assign, it can show up and be assigned as like audio output input sources for tons of different apps. So, on the roadcast you have all your faders, like one fader could be spotify, one could be discord one could be whatever.
Speaker 2Isn't that that the go g the?
Speaker 1go xlr yeah did that very well and was very similar, but they like went out of business or something so oh, they did yeah, they shut down I don't know why.
Speaker 2It was very weird people were so like mad about they had a huge fan base.
Speaker 1But I don't know why. It was very weird what people were so mad about. They had a huge fan base. But I don't know. I'm going to guess somewhere someone in the tech sphere may or may not have managed their business well, believe it or not. Crazy, I know. And maybe they didn't do well, but anyway, it's cool that the RODECaster is jumping in to do that. So there's a beta thing that came out today. It works on windows and the mac version, obviously, is coming soon. Yeah, cool. So that's a cool one.
Speaker 2That's a very cool one yeah and uh, what else is up?
Speaker 1so many things. I'm like I was like very happy prior to our audio things because you, you yeah what like you can't think about anything else, I could feel you like, still trying to.
Technical Difficulties & Channel Progress
Speaker 1I'm trying. I have like a splitting headache now, but this has been this month. So, on top of everything, this month has been the busiest month ever period, so I'm a little drained from it. Even good things are draining, yeah, but the thing I got, so I'm editing a video right now and I'm very happy with that. The video I filmed that I'm editing is.
Speaker 1There's a couple of things there. One is it's a video I've been waiting to film since january. Yes, I can finally film it, make it. I'm very excited about that. Yeah, that's just like a huge relief. And then the other thing is because I've been doing like 10 different projects at once right now. This was the last one of the current batch of like projects that I'm working on and I'm done filming, which means I can finally actually put my office back together, cause it has just been like you want to know why little things get lost. It's like just a complete war zone in there, like, like. It's like just a complete war zone in there, like, like it's just been chaos for ages. Now you can't even move in there anymore. Um, and now I'm done and I can actually like clean it up and put things back together, which I'm so excited for. I cannot wait for that um yeah, so that's good.
Speaker 2Yay, jeremy says doing a live at 3 pm today to show how to get virtual channels to work on the map oh sweet, that's awesome, that's, that's gonna be super helpful yeah, uh, let's see.
Speaker 1Well, I put out a video on my gaming channel for the first time in a year and Tom is in it.
Speaker 2So if you want to see us talk about video games for 20 minutes, go check out that video on Heather, just Play. But I'm very excited about it. Um, when we recorded the video, I we had the new camera, but we I forgot to change the 1080 4k thing in ecam, so it's in 1080 but, um, but it still looks so good and I'm actually I had so much fun editing this one, um, and it's like so nice to talk about something that isn't like content creation. It's like a nice outlet. So I'm really looking forward to getting back at the channel and everyone has been so nice. All these people have been like.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh, it's so good that you're back and blah, blah.
Speaker 1I'm like people were like so excited to to watch this video, click on it and the feedback you got's been awesome, which it didn't really click to me. That like, yeah, of course, this is the first video you put out on that channel in a long time. I guess you've been doing like community posts over there and then you did like the keyboard review which felt related, but that was on the on the tutorial channel. So like I guess in my mind it was like, oh, yeah, you've been active on that channel, but no, this was the first upload.
Speaker 2No, I got demonetized. I didn't even know you could get demonetized, but I was. I don't know what the window is six months, maybe that like if you are inactive on your YouTube channel for six months, you get demonetized for some reason. So which is fine, like you know, it's like 2000 subscribers or whatever. But uh, I have to like re meet the requirements.
Speaker 1So that's how long I've so it's not demonetized for content or anything. It's demonetized like the channel for inactivity.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, no strikes or anything like that. But it's like if, if you don't, I think at the very least you have to do a community post. But I just like completely walked away for that channel for a bit.
Speaker 1So, um, I'm glad you're back on that channel yeah, me too, I'm.
Speaker 2I'm just really excited about it. The feedback's been great. So yeah, uh, mr g, how shallow just the field do you have? When Heather leans in over the table, tom goes slightly out of focus. This is a problem. This is why I did manual focus for so long.
Speaker 1But then we were just both out of focus.
Speaker 2No, I don't know, it wasn't a problem before, but, like you know what it is, it's because we don't have mics.
Speaker 1Oh, to keep us in one spot.
Speaker 2Yeah, so obviously there are two of us and there's one camera, and so if any of us is, not in the plane, yeah um, but usually we use mics on mic stands and um, why? Why are you not using a mic?
Speaker 1it's because because I can't no, but why why? Because they have nowhere to connect a mic.
Speaker 2That's why.
Speaker 1Yeah.
Speaker 2We have no ports.
Speaker 1Well, it's not that there's no ports, it's that last week we tried combining USB and XLR.
Speaker 2Oh, that's what it was.
Speaker 1Yeah, that made an echo, and so it's like, yeah, it's trying to figure that whole thing out.
Speaker 2Yeah, so you had the idea of I use the Shure MV7, of possibly changing that to USB instead of XLR mv7, of possibly changing that to usb instead of xlr. That way you can use an usb mic and then hopefully the usb xlr combination.
Speaker 1I'm very sus about that the thing. That's why the streamer x. I'm like, okay, you can do multiple mics done and it just does everything. Just can't get those signals out at the same time because even if you're using xlr usb, it's all going through the same interface. Ah, um, which is what we want.
Speaker 2World, according to Briggs says I can't work if my office is a mess.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's very hard.
Speaker 2Yeah, for sure, but hopefully we're turning the corner. I think we're turning the corner.
Speaker 1That's the last. Well, okay, that's not the last piece, because there's an organizational piece, don't jinx it Well. Figuring out the audio, though, is like simple audio. Simple audio to just add in one more person on rare occasions is really the last production piece. And then it's organization.
Speaker 2Yeah, we have to redo the setup again One more time. I can't believe. I just it's funny how complicated it is.
Speaker 1It's. It was funny, Now it's not as funny anymore.
Speaker 2Oh well, I feel bad because the moving parts are in your head.
Speaker 1I think a big helpful thing, though, was you deciding to not do two computers, because then it's like, okay, let's's just we don't have all the pieces right now, but like now, we know what to focus on, what to put together, versus trying to make everything do everything yeah that's hard, that's really hard yeah, uh.
Speaker 2So what else is up?
Speaker 1oh, I don't know. My brain is fried now.
Speaker 2It's just a fried egg uh, well, um, yeah, we can keep this episode short this might be an unlisted episode afterwards uh well, you know, I think it's good that 150,000 subscribers later, and what? Eight years later, we're still figuring it out.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, it's confusing every time. I mean, there's things you know, like something goes, and also like.
Speaker 2The thing that I really like I just cut you off, I'm sorry is that it's just us. It's a mom-pop shop. We don't have a production team.
Speaker 1You don't have a random guy over there to move a thing around and do stuff.
Speaker 2And when things go wrong, we just have to deal.
Speaker 1Something goes wrong in every live stream to some degree.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1At least every one I've ever done. No, that's not true. Oh, I can't think of one where nothing has gone wrong.
Speaker 2I feel like the couples table we got it down.
Speaker 1We got it down. There's usually like some audio level issue or some. There's something but like. Sometimes it's small, sometimes it's larger and for the most part, I feel like I haven't been this frustrated in a live stream in maybe three years. So right now, in this moment not in this moment, but like trying to fix issues and frustrated, like flustered and frustrated. I've gotten a lot better with that. I think it's just because, like literally it's, you know, the stream is at one and I'm trying to plug in a microphone at 102 and it's like there's no, there's just no time to test practice anything and yeah
Speaker 2that's hard it's hard, but we're gonna deal with it. Uh yeah, so today is probably gonna be a um short episode.
Speaker 1That's fine I mean, here's the actual life. Lesson is yesterday. We're like okay, we have this crazy schedule this week. Do we even do an episode this week?
Speaker 1yeah and we said, yeah, we should, because the consistency is really important, although we were both kind of on the fence of like, should we not, because schedule is insane right now. Um, and we decided to for the sake of consistency. I think that was a bad decision. Oh, I don't think we should. I mean, I in the time I thought it was a good decision, but obviously probably not the right decision, and maybe that's a good lesson to learn yes, I was just having a conversation with another creator friend who was saying, who had the reminder and reminded me that you run the YouTube channel?
Speaker 2the YouTube channel does not run you and that is just a good reminder of like you're in charge. You can kind of check in and be like, yeah, is this something that needs to be done?
Speaker 1Sometimes it's hard to feel that way. That's an important reminder. But I mean, like the couples table is fun and you hang out and you talk, but it's like it throws off people, aren't you know? I've had people message me and they're like oh, like, I'm not going to watch today because Thursday you know like so it's like you don't want to, not you know it's tough, like what do you do?
Speaker 1how do you navigate that? Yeah, try different things at different times and see what works and what doesn't, I guess so the thing that we're doing tomorrow is actually really exciting.
Speaker 2Um, there's a local business actually it's our local chamber of commerce and um, they have a program which many other cities around the world have a similar program. It's just just called leadership, whatever the city name is, like Leadership LA or whatever. So we're doing the leadership program, equivalent of our area, and basically it's a like six to nine month program that basically gives you a behind the scenes orientation of your region. So everything from industry to business, to nonprofit, to education, to residential, all of that like how, how, the, how your area works. You get to tour like places that nobody else gets to see. You know, it's very like. It's like a special, reputable program that is done in many, many other cities around the world, and so that's what we're doing on Friday. Tomorrow is actually our kickoff for the first day in this program and we're really excited about it. I think we're the only content creators. Both of us were accepted. Half the applications were turned down.
Speaker 2So it's like I don't know, it's kind of exciting, but it's the whole day yeah and, uh, I don't remember the last time we were gone for the whole day, like together. Yeah, it doesn't happen much yeah, sorry, I cut you off.
Speaker 1I keep doing that today, uh I was gonna say yeah at first. I didn't know. I thought it was one of those things like you know, you pay your fee, oh you get accepted like amazing, um no, like turn like 50 percent except. And then once I realized that I was like oh no, and then I got really nervous yeah, I'm not really nervous.
Speaker 1Well because at first I was like, okay, I want to do this, but is it like a legit thing, or am I just kind of paying a lot of money to like pay a lot of money? Yeah and then it was like, oh, no, that's not the case. And I was like, wait, no, it's legit.
Speaker 2No, I really want it yeah so I'm excited because, uh, it is a lot of business people and I think for me it's, I think it's a good. I always get like re-inspired being around other entrepreneurs and because we're the only content creators, it's nice to just see how people in other industries run their business right like I think that's always like there's someone in our group who runs a tabletop gaming store yeah, how cool is that that's awesome.
Speaker 2I just want to like that is very awesome tell me your story and how do you do this? Like I'm, I'm excited to like share that whole journey, so I'm probably going to share that over on my Instagram, but that's what we're going to be doing tomorrow and it goes until June.
Speaker 1So not from tomorrow, once a month, yeah, we're not gone till June.
Camera Updates and Technical Challenges
Speaker 2Morty says have you been playing with your new camera at all, having it set up? No, with your new camera at all outside of having it set up? Uh, no, so I I thought about trying to like learn how to use it. But the problem is that it is like so set up for this setup. It's got the prompter on it. It's like the power. The power is a dummy battery. It's all like strapped in with like wire, cable holders, velcro and all of that.
Speaker 2So it's not, unfortunately, it's not easy for me to just like. Well, I think it'd be easy for you because you know what everything is, but yeah, it would be like, it would be like hard for me to take it off and like go with it. But I try to um play with my ZV-1, to try to like I don't know figure out if I can take better shots of my setup with that camera instead of the phone. I actually decided that the 4k on the phone looks better. I don't know, um, but yeah, so I haven haven't had a chance. I'm sure you would like to play, but your, your camera is objectively better, isn't it?
Speaker 1I mean, the guts are basically the same oh, the same yeah, so the, the form factor is just different. This is like my camera without having to be giant, which is nice, yeah. And there's some cool which I guess would actually be really fun for vlogging, like the, the, the ai thing that like tracks you a little bit, like moves. The camera doesn't move, but it can move the frame around you and follow you a little bit. Actually looks pretty decent. There's fun stuff like that oh, this does that yeah, this camera which is very, very cool.
Speaker 1Oh, and also morty.
Speaker 2There's a chance I might get to see you soon yes I have to email you I said did you talk to morty? Uh, jeremy, don't beat yourself up. Number one rule have fun. Otherwise, always the nine to five. There's always a nine to five. Yeah, uh, didn't we say that? Oh yeah, literally like two hours ago, we were like oh, this is why we don't do the nine to five, because we're gonna be away from oh, I think that's what you're talking about.
Speaker 1Yeah, we were like, oh no, what do we do? And I was like, wait, if we both had nine to five jobs, we'd be gone the same times all day every day because even when I was working, you were still working from home. So it was like I don't know, there's just, there's always like a someone at home base.
Speaker 2You know, yeah and yeah, the the that's nice yeah, it's very nice no, yeah, we're definitely, we're having fun, it's just, there's just a lot yeah, no, you can be overwhelmed with good things.
Speaker 1It's, it's, it's keeping track of things and it's yeah, it's just a lot. I don't know how to describe it I mean, it's better than nothing you know, yeah, I mean that's I. I know that's what I'm like. Okay, it's good. And the good news too is there's also. There is like a light at the end of the tunnel. It's not like, well, I guess this is their schedule forever. It's like okay, you're gonna have a very busy four to six weeks and then things can kind of go a little back to normal. Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2I am bummed, though, that I updated my OS.
Speaker 1See, that's the thing.
Speaker 2I never update the OS, I update the phone right away, see that's what made me do it, because you he updated his iOS and was so excited watching tutorials, blah blah, and I was like I never update the OS, ever until I have to. And then I saw you being really excited about it and I was like, well, maybe there's some exciting updates and I think my phone auto-updates. So I was like it's probably going to iPhone, mac, I don't know, and so I updated it and that was a mistake.
Speaker 1Yeah, the mobile stuff I have found is better the OS, especially when it's like you got final cut and ecam and all these things where it's like let's just make sure I'm gonna let other people test that out and then I'll join in like two or three months yeah, that's kind of that's what I said, so that's a lesson.
Speaker 1There's another lesson for you yeah, I mean, which is kind of dumb, because it should be working well by the time they release the update. But I guess there's only so much you can actually do yeah, apple is just a small little startup company.
Speaker 2They'll figure it out at some point uh yeah, so let's see what else is going on.
Speaker 1I'm gonna check in on how this video I released my gopro video on the day that dji happened to release oh yeah, so how do you feel about that? I had no idea. Dji released the Action 5, which is like their action camera, as the name implies, and so there's a huge embargo thing. And then it was just I happened to finally finish my GoPro video, which, freaking, took forever.
Speaker 2That was a beast of a video.
Speaker 1I really, really liked the way that it came out um and heather says that as somebody who's not interested in those cameras and watched all like 37 minutes, I watched the whole.
Speaker 2I mean I I try to watch all the tom's videos 37 minutes. I was like, oh, I might need a break right.
Speaker 1I paused it like three or four times, like take a break. Yeah, no, it was like it just flew by.
Speaker 2It was like you know, he has a way of explaining things and, like the way that you edited, this one was very I don't know, just passed by fast.
Speaker 1This was a tricky one. This was a. This was like a beast of a video to put together, and I like it.
Speaker 2It came out really well.
Speaker 1I was like, oh perfect, that'll come out on Thursday, which I thought worked well, because they announced the new GoPro like two weeks ago. It's officially like in stores next week. So I was like, oh perfect. Like the initial announcement hype has worn off, but people are still like, oh, I don't want to get it. I think it's, it's available, like. I've seen people with it. So I think some stores are already selling it, but it's not officially officially available till next week. I was like, oh perfect. So. And I was like, oh perfect, so before people just go to Best Buy or whatever and get it, they can watch the video and see Great. They just happen to be literally like at the same time as the embargo for the DJI thing. So it's literally like all the DJI things at my GoPro video, all the DJI things.
Speaker 2So it got a little bit buried by that or did it?
Speaker 1you know it looks like it did and and then I've had people like thinking that that was somehow a strategic thing. Like I scheduled this video like three days ago and I have no idea about any DJ embargo products so I assumed they were going to update their camera, because they update it annually and it's been a year, so that's why I knew that they know it's going to be the same day as that.
Speaker 2I don't think that's a bad thing no, I mean it's fine. It's totally fine, because I mean, would you have changed it?
Speaker 1probably not. I actually, if I could have it, would have loved to put the gopro video out last week, but I just couldn't get it done in time.
Speaker 2Yeah, and, and then I this is what I was thinking. You did so much this week.
Speaker 1I had filmed a bunch of like special footage and then formatted the memory card. So that was awesome. So I had to like refilm a bunch of GoPro footage, cause obviously you need footage from the GoPro in the GoPro review.
Speaker 2See, we still run into hiccups, oh yeah they're just all the but that.
Speaker 1See that, and that part of that is because I'm also working on like five projects at once and it's like jumping from this one to that one, to this. You know what?
Creativity and Virality in Content Creation
Speaker 2uh I remember when peter lingren came to visit you were like wow, I don't even know what it would be like to work on multiple videos at the same time peter's crazy.
Speaker 1Yeah, I don't have his skill. I I've done okay so far, but Peter, I watched him in person film three different videos at the same time.
Speaker 2Yeah, Just flawlessly.
Speaker 1Yeah With no like he didn't have, like his notes, doc or anything, he would just literally be like he'd be like, okay, I need the, I need like two shots of this lens and then it's over here. I need to do this talking head part over here and do this, it over here and do this. It's all in his head. He could be in one location and three different angles, three different videos. And then he he is meticulous at the end of every day of putting every file in every proper folder so that like you have everything there, nothing's mixed up. Yeah it was, uh, that was, that was just crazy.
Speaker 2That was really fun to watch uh, jeremy says, been working with sequoia for a couple months now. It works so far. Yeah, it wasn't like a new os, it was just like like an update no, it's a new os oh, shoot serious oh I didn't know.
Speaker 1It was like a full yeah, that's the october, or I guess in october the september see, I thought it was like a mini, just like.
Speaker 2Here's a. Patch 2.1, yeah, I thought it was a patch.
Speaker 1No, you're on the Sequoias Sequoia, mac OS Sequoia, oh yeah, sequoia 15.0.
Speaker 2I have no idea, okay, so obviously some things are a little.
Speaker 1Yeah, the preview thing is very weird because you can see it changing the colors of files.
Speaker 2It's almost like the way that it handles color data oh my God, my video shot up to 516.
Speaker 1Wow.
Speaker 2From 367.
Speaker 1Since we've been doing this.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1That's very cool.
Speaker 2I don't know.
Speaker 1Are you nervous? Now I'm a little bit nervous, that's a lot do you remember the first viral video that I made on yours?
Speaker 2yeah, no, the apple watch one oh, that was crazy yeah, every time you refreshed it was thousands yeah thousands, but see, that's the power of apple, yeah, which is why everyone died yeah, it has not gotten a view.
Speaker 1I mean, of course, why would it get a view? But yeah, it shot up to okay. At the time my channel was at barely over a thousand subscribers really yeah, most videos were getting there's only a year old, like it was 2018. Most of my videos would maybe cross 100 views oh my god, that's, adorable this one was getting like 10 to 20 000 views a day that was crazy.
Speaker 1I remember refreshing, and it was like oh my gosh, oh my gosh yeah, but then it literally it shot up to I think, 104 000 and I think it has been there ever since. It's just never moved. Um, which is also where I learned, I was like, okay, obviously it's not going to stay on this trajectory, it's going to peter off, speaking of peter. But then it that learned. I was like, okay, obviously it's not going to stay on this trajectory, it's going to peter off speaking of peter.
Speaker 2But then it that was where I was, like this is artificial Like YouTube was like done.
Speaker 1next video.
Speaker 2Yeah, like it didn't get a single view the next day.
Speaker 1Yeah, it went from 10,000 in a day to like 12. And I was like that's not really a publishing schedule because I put that video out. It's really funny because I was making another video I was working really hard on.
Speaker 2Yeah, it was two videos you were making that day.
Speaker 1I was pulling a Peter Lindgren there. No, I was yeah, because I was doing a day in the life video of me like being a teacher and doing all the things and then that video is like a 200 views yeah, and, but that was the one I like. Oh my gosh, I had the gopro in the car on the way.
Speaker 2I love that video.
Speaker 1Um, there's like special title effects and stuff, and then at the end of the day, it just so happened that, like the new apple watch, there's a series four got delivered. I had the original Apple Watch and I was like, oh so the video ends with me doing that and I was like you know, I'm very curious how much faster the new Apple Watch is than the original. So I think I want to do a video like that and that's like how the video ended. I didn't know I was going to make that video, from the idea of I should make a to the video being uploaded was less than two hours, because it's a very it's like top down shot, like here's how long it takes to do this on this watch, this watch, blah, blah, blah.
Speaker 1It's just like I thought it was simple, fun, interesting. And then I remember again at this point, videos could go days and maybe maybe hit 100 views maybe. And I remember waking up the next morning and it was at like 1,000 something and I was like I don't write, like this number just doesn't compute in this. I don't know this number in this area, like what does that mean? And then, like, swiped it again, it was like a different number. It's like what's happening? Like I thought there was like a virus or something like a defect and then it was like oh no, this video's just going crazy. I remember we went out to breakfast or something and it was just like oh my gosh, how crazy but yeah, it's all that to say.
Speaker 1The whole point of me telling that was it's very exciting, but then there is sort of like a nervous feeling oh yeah like you can feel eyeballs turning yeah, yes and they all turned away.
Speaker 2Well, see, that just goes to show. Like you know, the virality is like cool, but if you're not sticking around, Well, I mean that.
Speaker 1That's why then people will do videos on every update, every Apple model, every.
Speaker 2No, I get it.
Speaker 1Accessory every, everything.
Speaker 2Which is cool if you're into that.
Speaker 1If you're into it, but if you're not into it, you're into it, but if you're not into it, you're doing it just for that reason. I've known people for whom then it becomes a grind. We are back to nine to five, yeah yeah, a nine to five would just be better, because it's just like you're just making the same video over and, over and over again.
Speaker 2You don't even want to make it in the first place yeah, yeah it's weird so, uh, yeah, well, I haven't had a video go over 500 in so long well, I mean, you haven't uploaded on this channel in over a year yeah, you know, my canvas tutorials are vibing at the 80s which is great thankful, like you know, but it's weird to see. It's weird to see I think it's.
Speaker 1I've always felt that your gaming channel is something very special in terms of the community you built around it, and even say that in the video you upload, say or say a version of that, and I think that this is just proof of that, like how excited people can be after such a thing. Someone was even, like I was just thinking the other day that I missed you like I know, apropos of, nothing they were. They were having the thought of like apropos nothing, uh expat animator oh my gosh, I haven't seen you in a while.
Speaker 2How are you finally able to catch you live? Well, today is usually not the day we go live, but we're not.
Speaker 1We're not gonna be. You didn't miss much. At the beginning. Let me tell you.
Navigating Technical Challenges in Video Production
Speaker 2This is a rough stream, but you know what? Okay, one of the reasons why I like the couples table is because this is a chance for I want people to see what our version of being full-time content creators looks like, because I feel like there's a lot of know day in the life and vlogs and interviews of people who are a bajillion. You know subscribers and they have teams and they have this and that. Whatever and I I like that. You know create the thing that you want to exist in the world. I want us to show every single day. We work on this thing and it's not always easy and there's hiccups. Even how many years later, how many videos have we made? How many streams have we done? We're still figuring it out and it's like something that you constantly have to like learn the skill like you cannot.
Speaker 1You know like things change so much I just did the thing, maybe two weeks ago. I recorded a huge chunk of a video and the camera wasn't on what video was that? I don't remember.
Speaker 2It was when I had to just redo oh yeah, you, I was napping and tom was like. I did it twice.
Speaker 1I was like oh, which is like that's a mistake. That's a mistake I haven't made in years. I've learned my lesson, I have all my monitors to do it, but something just like.
Speaker 2You know like, are you okay Did?
Speaker 1you just fall. You fell Something just like.
Speaker 2So yesterday I recorded a Canvas tutorial which should be coming out later today, but I paused because I had to switch. I was doing a screen share and I had to switch programs and when you switch programs and the screen share in Ecamm is focused on one program, it shows your whole desktop and like zooms in and out weird.
Speaker 1Right.
Speaker 2So I had to like pause and then switch to the program and all that, and I was like, oh my God, did I un like, did I? Really like unpause, the pause or whatever. So I was still recording and I was, was and it was fine, um, but there's definitely times where I'm like, oh my god, did I I hit pause? Did I unpause? Am I still recording?
Speaker 1yeah I have to redo that whole thing I know the video I was recording this morning had four cameras plus audio audio from every camera. No, no, like a separate audio plus four cameras, no, two separate audio sources plus four cameras, and I'm trying to make sure everything is focused, exposed, trying to be similar in terms of color, trying to remember what is where.
Speaker 2It's so crazy how you enjoy that, because the idea of using four cameras gives me anxiety. I mean it depends Using four cameras gives me anxiety.
Speaker 1I mean, it depends the thing that I like filming videos with multiple cameras, like sometimes it's necessary, like if you're doing something where you need a top-down shot, you just have it. It's great. And sometimes just having the two talking head cameras is nice, because even if you don't have a lot of insert footage or B-roll or whatever, you can just switching between those is like cool visual appeal. Like just by adding a second camera you have your main angle, your secondary angle and then, if you like, push in on your main angle.
Speaker 2that's like three, three shots no one tells tom to do this, he just loves it. You just love doing it. You love making it complicated, but it looks great but?
Speaker 1but see, to me that's making it simple, because that means, in editing, before I've even filmed one piece of b-roll, I already have three camera angles to cut between for visual interest and for covering things up and all that kind of stuff. So it's yeah um, yes, and then you can, you know what anti-jump cut.
Speaker 2So I try to avoid jump cuts I'm not.
Speaker 1I'm not anti them like I have no problem when I see them.
Speaker 2I use jump cuts all the time, yeah but for your videos you don't want the jump cuts. And you know, sometimes I prove his videos and then he'll accidentally forget, like, like you left in a jump cut and I'm no, not, you me, I get thrown off. I'm like yeah, I try. You forgot something here.
Speaker 1I try to leave him in when there's a purpose or an effect, so like sometimes for like comedic or even just like sometimes I'll say like, oh, like this right here and I'll go grab like a camera lens out of my drawers in the back and so I don't mind leaving the jump cut where you see me kind of turn and then it jump cuts to me like turning back around with a thing, because it.
Speaker 1It kind of shows like oh, he went and got something yeah yeah storytelling I guess, I guess that is part of storytelling, yeah, but yeah, otherwise I try to avoid them or patch them over with, uh, you know, with b-roll or something which is just. I like that in my videos and it's. It is kind of a fun challenge to see how everything can kind of flow together and piece it together in kind of magical ways. Um, one magical ways. It is fun one thing, that that, uh, because you, only you have your one camera yeah one camera.
Speaker 1You have one camera. That's not what I meant. I meant, um, maybe it was over three years ago I started. Pretty much every video has a second camera. Yeah, um, and I switched that up maybe eight months ago a little more, because what I was doing was I was talking to the camera and I set camera, just sort of filming.
Speaker 2Your side angle yeah.
Speaker 1And the reason I did that was because that was for editing, because you you not only get those three shots main angle, push in plus side angle, but you also then um, you can kind of cut to that and cover up mistakes and things like like jump cuts. You can cover up jump cuts by cutting to the second angle?
Speaker 2yeah, because it looks like it is a jump cut, but you put the second angle, so it just looks like you cut to a different angle instead of a jump.
Speaker 1Yeah, and smooth it over. Um, and people are very divided on that. Some people love it, some people don't. I I see on other people's channels sometimes I love it, sometimes I don't. So it's very contextual stylist.
Speaker 2It's a stylist.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's just there's no right or wrong it's just a style choice I started doing it because I would see documentaries where they would have the person being interviewed. It would show them like a shot where you'd see them talking to the camera or whatever.
Speaker 2Yeah, yeah, I like that so I that's.
Speaker 1That was where I got the idea and then it helped with editing. Yeah, but some people get really mad, which maybe is specifically on youtube. They do not like it when you're not looking at the camera because it feels impersonal and it feels like, oh, I've had. That has been like a very divisive thing and so comment yeah, many, many, many times and so what is your reply?
Speaker 2many times, I mean.
Speaker 1my reply I've explained in videos is what I told you like. Well, this is an editing thing, like so it is a stylistic choice. I, I enjoy it and it also helps me with editing. But for whatever reason, like eight or nine months ago, I was doing a thing and then I started looking. I started looking, I looked at the other camera for a thing and I really liked how it looked and I was like, oh, that's nice. Oh, yeah.
Speaker 1And since then I was like I do kind of like when I am addressing each camera and you don't see me Like two different people in the room. Yeah, but I'm always talking to you.
Speaker 2the viewer Like it's always a direct yeah, but then you're just like looking over here.
Speaker 1It helps with different points, especially because one is wider and one is like more cropped in. So it's like you know, know, today I'm talking about the gopro hero 10. I just want you to know, gopro sent the hero 10, but it's not a sponsored video like it's. You can kind of do that, that sort of thing, and so since then I haven't had just the side shot anymore, but it makes filming and editing much harder, because now I'm very conscious of when you're cutting.
Speaker 1Yeah, so it's almost like I have to catch a mistake or catch a thing and then consciously go like this part is going to be to this video or this camera and this part to this one. So it actually does that. It proves my point of it was great for editing, because it just saves you if you don't want jump cuts, yeah, but you like how this looks better I do like how it looks better, but it does not.
Speaker 2Now it doesn't save what I did. I didn't even notice that, but now that you've mentioned it, yeah, I haven't seen this side of your head.
Speaker 1So now? Now it's just back to B-roll. If I need to cover something, I'll just put a B-roll.
Speaker 2The road to health rewind what did I miss at the beginning? You activated my fomo, oh just audio issues, it's just tech issues, nothing, I mean. We, I have to say we're at the top of the hour and I I felt us almost give up in the middle I was, I was gonna call it.
Speaker 1I was like, let's just go get ice cream. Like I want to go drown my sorrows in a medium dish of brownie dough right now we did it, though.
Speaker 2Good job see.
Speaker 1Sometimes you just gotta push through, okay well, it's nice when you also have supportive people who are like chill, it's cool yeah, there wasn't it.
Speaker 2I can't even imagine so I was like this stream sucks um. Let's see jeremy says interesting youtube throwing up commercials on mobile for mobile, but not desktop for stream.
Speaker 1Are you watching on both at the same time? I like it. I like it. Gil says.
Speaker 2I forgot to hit record on a client's video, the other day. Luckily I wasn't too far in.
Speaker 1I've had that feeling where you just kind of glance over and something's not, it either stopped or never started, or the feeling you're like all right, I'm done, I'm going gonna stop recording. And then you hear it.
Speaker 2You hear it start recording. That's the worst. That is the freaking worst like what's that now?
Speaker 1oh my god, my heart like because you know what I have done before luckily, not often is what I was doing the two cameras. I've accidentally done that with my main camera, but not the second one okay and no, but I can't, because it's the side of my freaking head and and I'm like, oh my God, I have a 45 gigabyte file of the side of my head and I have nothing for me looking at the camera.
Speaker 2Let's see, I love using a second camera to hide jump cuts. There we go. Jeremy says I'm grilling chicken for gumbo, so need be mobile, that sounds awesome. Yeah, that sounds delicious.
Speaker 1I don't know what life you're living, but it sounds like a great life have we even had gumbo. No.
Speaker 2I don't think we've had gumbo together.
YouTube Memberships vs Patreon Integration
Speaker 1No, I don't know when the last time I would have had gumbo is.
Speaker 2I feel like your mom ordered gumbo at that German restaurant that we used to go to.
Speaker 1Oh yeah, because I was like oh, it's like a thing it's a real thing.
Speaker 2Yeah, she ordered a jumbo gumbo anyway. I I just I want to remember we pushed through and we did it yeah did you have fun?
Speaker 1it did so you got there yeah, it just look how cute he is you know it takes a while to like I know the stress hormones need to go away.
Speaker 2I I know I can feel the discombobulation and I was like, oh, literally, physically, you have to wait for all that stress To drain out Before you can like Be at peace.
Speaker 1Yeah, it's like you want to, but you're like I.
Speaker 2Yeah, and I was like, I'm like subjects that kind of copy.
Speaker 1So I was like ice cream. Can we just like? Can I have my big red? Button to just like eject, oh man oh look, real pale room went to handles for the first time this week.
Speaker 2Coffee with heath, omg yeah, oh, my god those handles influencers I can't even tell you how I mean. Look, I can't tell you how many people we have sent to Handles Like so many.
Speaker 1Yeah, Handles, we got affiliate, we got promo code.
Speaker 2Worldwide. Okay, well, I don't know if they're not in the US, but definitely, like in other states, people have gone to Handles.
Speaker 1Yeah, people have sent you like messages of them in Handles.
Speaker 2It's good, I don't know.
Speaker 1It. It's good, I don't know.
Speaker 2It's really fun because they have such a big menu. It's fun to see what people order coffee with heath sounds. That sounds good yeah, gil, I have a buddy who has a sony recording chime as a tech sound and oh god, that is what a nightmare.
Speaker 1Oh my god, oh that sound can you imagine if his phone is like on during recording. Oh, I just homesick masters.
Speaker 2I love this. Guys enjoy the ice cream. Yeah well, are we doing it? The problem? Here's the problem. We had ice cream yesterday oh goodness so it's. It's not a once a week situation, it's a twice. Yeah, so I should probably go get my a1c checked pretty soon. The spruce lodge hey guys, did you see the new elgato stand coming out? Also your thoughts on the new road update? I did so.
Speaker 1Tom bought a I'm actually gonna go grab it, because I can't, because I'm wireless there you go.
Speaker 2We didn't have a gear of the week segment we didn't have a gear of the week segment today because it was just too crazy. He bought a new monitoring monitor. It's a monitor that you use to monitor.
Speaker 1It's just a computer display. This was $50. It's a little 15 inch HDMI monitor.
Speaker 2Yes, and you use it to like view your camera.
Speaker 1You can connect it to your camera, you can connect it to your computer. Um, you can actually your atem if you want to see, like all the multi-cam and everything, yeah, but the problem is that it doesn't have a stand, so he 3d printed this one and it's been great.
Speaker 2But I just saw, uh, elgato, like they put out a instagram post of an ipad on that desk stand and it was just like the ipad was just like. You know, there's like two clips and it was just in midair and I was like, oh, you should totally.
Speaker 1Yeah, it looks almost like the rode ds2 stand that I use for my mic a lot, but instead of a mic mount it's got like a clamp. I don't know how wide the clamp goes, but Elgato did send a message. They were like, oh, something about desk, something about a desk stand sending desk stand. And I was like so, and I did get a notification that something got delivered to our PO box yesterday.
Speaker 1So I think there might be one sitting there which would be perfect, because I would love to be able to. This stand's good, but it's just a little lightweight and I would love to be able to. Yeah, I wish this had a like a tripod mount, that's, you know, 50 bucks, but the screen itself I can't believe it's 50 bucks.
Speaker 2It's like it's so cool, um so I'm pretty sure you're gonna be using that the desk stand if this fits in it.
Speaker 1Yeah, because this is very lightweight, so it shouldn't like topple over. So anyway, thoughts on that. It super cool. Elgato is just kicking all the butts.
Speaker 2I know they are. I mean, I told them I posted on their thing. I was like you guys are killing it. They did their like roundup or whatever. Um, oh, actually that's what I wanted to talk about today. Video I don't know when recently, of everything they've been working on the past month and they are coming out with communities.
Speaker 1So, um, the equivalent of a like discord, mighty networks thing some kind of built in to youtube which is like crazy, like patreon, we're not just you can. You can make posts, but your viewers can make posts, add photos, do polls.
Speaker 2That is huge. I think that's like I don't know. I think it's a it's funny. I think it's a great thing for creators. I feel bad for community platforms because I think.
Speaker 1I mean YouTube is looking. What are people leaving our platform for? Put that on our platform instead which is good and bad.
Speaker 2I've always been the proponent of like don't put all your eggs in one basket, but I also know the ease on the viewer's end when everything is just all in one place.
Speaker 1Well, and the Because here's. I mean we could. Well, we're at the.
Speaker 2Well, we can save for next, we can make it. Yeah, let's say we can make up for the couple minutes of no content at the beginning just jump to this part yeah, but I I've been struggling with that, as like with patreon and youtube yes, yeah, we I mean, we've been talking about it a lot tom has memberships, paid memberships, on both patreon and they're the same same, same price People in here are parts of that.
Speaker 1I have preferred Patreon because it's separate. They do take less of a cut, but more because it's separate. And when Patreon, when it comes to actually creating posts on Patreon, like if you do a video post, it's higher quality than a YouTube video. If you want to do a text post, you can format it the same way you would format like a blog. You can actually, you know, indent, italicize, hyperlink, add in photos, all that kind of stuff. Um, which YouTube community posts are garbage.
Speaker 2It's just a wall of text.
Speaker 1You can kind of put some space. I mean, yeah, it's limited, it's limited, it's really bad, it's like really bad, um, and sometimes even that text doesn't carry over into the actual post. But my bigger thing was, just like YouTube memberships get thrown into your one Google AdSense account, so all the eggs are in one basket. But it's impossible for me to ignore the fact that, after having both up for four years now virtually no one goes to patreon and I very much appreciate, appreciate the people who do and I feel like but it's, it's every day someone signs up on youtube.
Speaker 2The problem with patreon is the same. It's the same problem as like thinkific, where there's a marketplace built in. So I feel like the people who actively use Patreon are patrons of multiple creators and every time they get the like hey, you're getting charged for 10 creators, they're going to evaluate, like I should probably knock one of these off. And so you know, I feel like it's a lot. It's a big leap for new people who aren't, who don't use Patreon, to become a new patron. And then the people who actively use it are constantly evaluating whether they are going to remain a patron or not yeah, I mean obviously, if you're doing not youtube, so if you're doing like a podcast, whatever, um it makes sense then patreon is the way to way to go and I really like patreon and I like a lot of the stuff that they've added.
Speaker 1but it's like it's becoming we were already having the discussion Like I was talking to you about, like, at a certain point I feel like I'm trying to push a boulder uphill, when I could just jump in a flowing river and go with the flow.
Speaker 2Exactly that's what I, that's what I told Tom. I was like you know, I think, instead of trying to do both knock off Patreon and then double down on YouTube memberships and I bet it would be a lot more successful.
Speaker 1Well, that was before YouTube made this announcement.
YouTube Courses vs Memberships Discussed
Speaker 2Yeah, so it's not globally available yet, but it's rolling out and, like I don't know, it was a three minute video that talked about all the things that are releasing, so it's like you know 30 seconds of their whole video, but, um, it looked really cool like it looked. I mean it's definitely a new feature. Uh, charlotte drew says youtube communities and courses. Yeah, they're doing courses.
Speaker 1Yeah, I mean youtube's kind of killing it and it's all free.
Speaker 2It's insane because like to host your courses, kajabi, boom, boom. How much are you paying? Then Mighty Networks for your communities how much are you paying? Like you know, it's like paid memberships Patreon, how much are you paying? So then, when you look at it as like YouTube does take a bigger cut but like is it a bigger cut? You're not paying a subscription.
Speaker 1Yeah, it costs me $1,000 a year to host my courses. That's a lot of money.
Speaker 2That's a lot of money.
Speaker 1Yeah, someone, multiple people, are paying for that when they buy your course yeah, it takes, you know, the first, whatever it is, the first five courses I sell every year have to pay break even yeah um uh, do either of you have the access to the course feature yet?
Speaker 2well, let me ask you this are you planning to put your courses there?
Speaker 1I, I definitely want to check it out and either make something, depending on how it works, either make something for it or make it another way to get access to my courses. But yeah, because the thing like going back to the other discussion of the thing with youtube channel memberships posting to your members currently, because that community thing isn't there yet kind of sucks. But if you want to share members only videos, members only live streams, that kind of stuff, it's so well integrated. Or do a live stream with members only chat, it's incredible, obviously it's well integrated. But if you're running, uh, youtube and that, so like I can't do a members only live stream because then people on patreon can't watch it, so I have to do an unlisted live stream and share the link to both places. I can't do members-only chat because then people on Patreon can't participate and that's the problem, because you're in two places.
Speaker 2Yeah Right, so if you were either, or like if you were only on Patreon, it'd be one thing which I was thinking of.
Speaker 1The opposite. I was like I'm going to shut down YouTube channel members and just double down on.
Speaker 2Patreon. How many people, so many people.
Speaker 1YouTube has three times the numbers of Patreon. I'd say double down on that yeah. Yeah, and that was before YouTube announced all this. So I feel like at a certain point, I just have to go this is what it is With the flow. Go with the flow, exactly.
Speaker 2Well, we are at the top of the hour and it sounds like we have a lot more to talk about. We will expound on this discussion. What are you looking at?
Speaker 1I was seeing Morty's got a run and I was saying don't like, don't get too tired on your run. And then I was thinking because so the thing with both our Apple Watches because we have the Series 8 Apple Watch, they have blood oxygen monitoring, which is disabled. Now is eight Apple Watch, they have blood oxygen monitoring, which is disabled. Now, like Apple doesn't sell watches in the US that have it because there was a lawsuit with some other company that had the patent or something. So it's kind of a cool feature that you can have, but you don't get in new ones and I ordered a new watch. So I'm like, oh, I lose blood oxygen tomorrow. So I was looking at my blood oxygen level because in the health app on the phone you can track it. I promise this is related.
Speaker 2Where are we going, babe?
Speaker 1And I was like, oh, okay, like typically it's between you know like 96 and 100% or whatever, like it should be. But I was like, oh, let me look at the whole year, like what is my range over the past year? And my lowest was 84, which, like your blood oxygen, really shouldn't go below 90 ever, like that's bad. You want to know when it was.
Speaker 2When you had COVID.
Speaker 1No, it was the turkey trot. Which the turkey trot two years ago on Thanksgiving is what I did get COVID. And then this past year I mean, it's so much fun, I had a great time. This past year is when I hurt my hip, which is barely recovered now. November to september, um, and it was also apparently I was getting no oxygen to my brain either or in my blood, which is maybe why I got it.
Speaker 1We're not doing it this year it's crazy because, like I play I play back-to-back hockey games many times nowhere close to that 90s you're not a runner, and that's okay it just shows, it really goes to show. I am not a runner at all, I have not built for it. So anymore morty thought you made me think of that oh, I see, there's how we got there.
Speaker 2Okay, cool, so next week we'll be back on friday. I believe I shouldn't it should be good.
Speaker 1Nothing else but uh couple's table in the calendar yeah, okay.
Speaker 2So, uh, we'll be back on friday and I think we should talk more about all these youtube updates.
Speaker 1Yeah, we should probably have some other big news too to share and recap and talk about.
Speaker 2Yes, there's a lot, so stay tuned for friday.
Speaker 1Uh, we hope you have a wonderful friday tomorrow and a great weekend and a great weekend and a great weekend safe, happy, healthy weekend week all the things thanks for your patience at the beginning of the stream and yes, and your encouragement, your kindness.
