No drinking for like two plus months now. I'm never going back. I feel stupid for waiting this long.

Speaker 1:

No way rogan's quit drinking. Let's count how many reasons he gives us for stopping no drinking anymore no drinking for like two plus months.

Speaker 2:

Now I'm never going back. I feel stupid for waiting this long because, like I would have these days like go to the club or do some shows, have a couple of cocktails with the boys, have a bunch, bunch of laughs. Do a podcast, have some whiskey, have some laughs, and then the next day like ugh.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I don't know about you, but I can relate to that so much Waking up just feeling like, oh, why did I even do that? What did I say? Who have I upset? Why did I drink so much? I could be feeling fresh right now. And here's a big one who's ever drank and then woken up and thought that was the best idea ever? No one, nobody wakes up the next morning after drinking thinking that was a good idea. But do you know how many people wake up the morning after not drinking thinking that was a good idea? Everybody.

Speaker 1:

And we often make this link between alcohol and socialising. We think that alcohol helps us socialise, yet when we really unpack it, does it actually help you socialise at all? Have you ever spoke to somebody who's had five cocktails? Because I certainly have. And guess what? It's the worst thing ever Listening to somebody slur their words, give me all these opinions on how the world should be ran, and I mean I'm sure you've heard it a thousand times, but when I drank, when I drank and I spoke to people, I didn't realise how stupid I sounded until I started listening to other people who had drank start talking to me.

Speaker 2:

And I'd be going through my workouts going oh you fucking moron, what have you done? If you're concentrating on improving your health and your fitness, why are you poisoning yourself?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, sabotaging yourself. The next point he brings up is how his workouts suck. So I don't know if you're into training, into exercise, but listen, I don't even know how he worked out when he was drunk. When I used to drink alcohol, I didn't even go to the gym. I'd skip workouts. I might go once or twice a week if I was lucky.

Speaker 1:

And he's saying that the actual quality of the workout sucked. You're kind of dragging yourself through it, aren't you? Now, since I stopped drinking alcohol just not to boast, but just to kind of give you an example of what can happen is I got into the best shape of my life. I went from this fat, lethargic, bloated individual into being able to squat 200 kilograms, deadlift 210 kilograms, bench press 130 kilograms. I couldn't do that stuff when I was drinking. And hey, listen, those numbers might not mean anything to you, but to me these were big goals that I had. But then he says that if you are concentrating on health and fitness, he basically says that you're just poisoning yourself and sabotaging yourself. And I mean, he's literally hit the nail on the head. You are literally poisoning yourself. And I'm so happy that he used that very colorful vocabulary pulling alcohol poison, because that's what it is. It's ethanol. It's a highly addictive, poisonous substance that does nothing for you. So I'm so glad he used that vocabulary, but that's what you're doing Now.

But you also start thinking, well, that's the only way to have fun. You have to have fun too. But no, it's not changing my fun. Fun is a prerequisite, like as a comedian, like you have to be having fun. Yeah, it's part of the fun of comedy is like enjoying it. I thought like maybe it would be less fun if I was sober. It's not. It's not any less fun sober, it's just as fun and it's just I feel better.

Speaker 1:

The fourth thing he said is that he had this idea that the only way to have fun was with alcohol, and that is a belief that a lot of people have Now. How this works is and because up until this point is, if you've drank alcohol for many years, anytime that you've had fun, like at a big social event, a wedding, a party or whatever we often make this false link that it was alcohol causing the fun. But this is all to do with reference experiences. Right, you could have gone through all of those things without drinking and had an equal amount of fun. But the problem is is that if you've drank for years, you never can relate not drinking to having fun, because most of your memories have had alcohol in them. So that's what he's saying, is he thought this, but then he moves on to the next point where he says that he's actually reframed this and now he has even more fun. See, fun and alcohol like.

Speaker 1:

This idea that we have less fun when we don't drink alcohol is a myth. And once you finally stop, that's when you start realising that it was never fun in the first place. There's nothing fun about what? Look, start realizing that it was never fun in the first place. There's nothing fun about what. Look, how is this having any fun at all? I mean, that's all you do when you drink alcohol, right? Is you drink something? There's nothing fun at all about that. But I think the only way that you can experience this is through stopping, and I think that's why he's kind of talking about this, because he said he stopped for like a month, so he's kind of getting these reference experiences. Now. This guy is clearly an extremely sociable person doing all sorts of stuff, and he's saying he's having more fun.

Speaker 2:

How cool is that and this is one of the things that I've always tried to tell all these comedians If you have more energy, you will have more energy on stage. If you have more energy, you could do more shows. You could do multiple shows a night and you don't get fatigued. It carries over into comedy.

Speaker 1:

The next thing he brings up is he just feels better. And I mean, who doesn't feel better after stopping drinking? Right, everybody feels better. You're not poisoning yourself anymore. Then he starts talking about energy levels and he starts explaining how, when he talks to comedians, you know if you're healthy and you're fit, you're able to do more. You're able to do more shows, which probably means more money, which probably means making people laugh more. And now he is also talking about fitness. In the video he's not just talking about stopping drinking entirely, he's talking about health in general, but I'm just so happy that alcohol came up in this conversation. But he's saying when you've got more energy, when you're healthy, when you're not drinking, you can do more stuff.

Speaker 2:

And, of course you can. Your body and your brain are inexorably connected. If your body functions better, your brain will function better. It's like it's not rocket science, it's real simple.

Speaker 1:

You know, I love the way he puts it. He said it's not rocket science, right? If your body's healthy and you're feeling good, of course you're going to do more, but what he was saying is that it carries over into comedy. That was his specific example. But it isn't just comedy. It's every area of your life your marriage, your business, just whatever it is. Everything gets better when you don't drink.

Speaker 2:

And if you drink, you will notice a big dip. If you have one cocktail, one cocktail will be a big dip in the amount of recovery you have and you won't even notice it. You'll be like, ah, I wasn't even drunk.

Speaker 1:

He notices that even if he has just one drink, he will notice a dip in his recovery. I'm not sure if he was talking about the data that he gets on his whoop band. It might be to do with HRV, I can't actually remember. But either way, he says that just one drink and he can feel the difference.

Speaker 3:

Well, if you're not trying to perform and do something, you won't notice it. A regular person at a regular job maybe you'll feel like a little sluggish, but it's when you start to like work out and perform and run and you're like looking at these times, or you're on the scale and you're like what the is going on yeah, crazy.

Speaker 1:

And what his guest said I think was the best part of this whole clip.

Speaker 1:

If you're trying to perform, if you're trying to work out, if you're trying to do things, big things, that's when you can notice it. And I don't think he was being judgmental. I mean, there's nothing wrong with being a regular person with a regular job. But I think what he was trying to get at is that if you do want to get to the next level in your life, if you do want to be a peak performer, if you do want to train hard and do well in business and do well in a career and raise an amazing family, then what the heck are you drinking alcohol for? Yeah, sure, listen. If you've got no goals, no ambition, no motivation, then you probably won't notice that much of a difference. But if you're somebody who needs to be on their A-game, that needs to be performing at a high level, then of course alcohol is going to slow you down. And I think that was personally my favourite point of the whole video and I'm so glad that he interjected at that point.

Speaker 2:

Well, most people are just used to feeling like garbage. Well, think about most people's diet, and if they just cleaned up their diet and then just cut out all the nonsense, you would feel so much better. But most people aren't doing that, so they're accustomed. They think this is what you're supposed to feel like this is life.

Speaker 1:

You know most people they just feel like garbage and they think that that's just how they're supposed to feel.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's like having water in your ear and you forget and then pops like oh I can hear now, right like they're walking through life with water in their ear and they think this is what it sounds like. But it's just, you're poisoning yourself.

Speaker 1:

But then I just love the metaphor that he finishes the video off with. It's like having water in your ear and then all of a sudden it's out and it's like this relief of like oh, I didn't even notice it, but it's got nothing to do with water in your ear.
